City hall, by Enric Miralles

Spanish temparament and Dutch SobernessDuration: circa 1.5 hrs

Utrecht’s town hall has an age-long history. Te administration o the city o Utrecht has been seated at this

location or over 650 years. In the course o time, ten medieval buildings and city castles were intercon-nected and still orm the core o the premises. Te result was an overly compact and impenetrable labyrinthwith many diferent oor levels.

In 1997 the local government commissioned Spanish architect Enric Miralles (1955 – 2000) to design abuilding that was open, transparent and inviting. Te aim was to combine the existing monumental parts, which were to be renovated, with a new wing.

Miralles combined modern architectural ideas with the historical elements in a very personal way. Te mainentrance was moved; it now is located in the external wall that or centuries had been the back o the prem-ises. In the process, this relocation resulted in the ormation o a new square. Te architect’s signature is

equally visible in the interior. He designed, or example, the lamps and benches that can be ound through-out the premises, and also the urniture in the council chamber. Te historical structure o the intercon-nected medieval buildings has been made visible in various ways.

University Museum, Utrecht

Te rst item o the University Museum that grabs your attention is the glass box in the ront açade. Aglassed-in corridor runs the length o the building, giving an immense eeling o space.

Entering the museum garden, the Old Hortus, the greenhouses leap immediately to the eye. Also the 18th

century orangeries and botanic laboratory are interesting buildings reminding o the early years o the OldHortus. A ormer orangery is now a garden-ronted caé.

Te museum is a building in super modernistic style, with unctional elements. Super modernism origi-nates with a minimalistic design and the use o materials like glass, concrete and steel. Te museum unctiondetermines the orm o the building: using glass makes the Old Hortus visible rom the street as well and thebox construction is excessively suited to t up expositions. In 1997 Dutch architect Koen van Velsen won theprestigious Rietveldprijs and Archinormprijs or the sublime box-in-a-box concept.

inner city, the so-called museum quarter. By combining unds rom the EU with the input o inhabitants, entrepreneurs, museums, cultural organisations and private investors, the local government has cast a newlight on the cultural heritage o this area. University Library innercity, by Groseld van der Velde Architects

Tis new library shows about eight kilometres o books. Te library is established in the ormer working-palace o Lodewijk Napo-leon. Te whole building contains six national monuments.

Whereas the old houses were inaccessible, the new building makes this old palace now accessible or everyone. Te entrance andthe Grande Galerie are now the beating heart o this complex and are an important meeting point or visitors and students.

Groseld van der Velde, architect o the new building, has deliberately chosen or a clear materialisation and colours, composing anunity in the building. Moreover you’ll nd a special attention or details, on behal o the monumental atmosphere.

ext rom architect’s web side:

Te ormer palace o Louis Bonaparte built in 1807, situated on the Dri in the historic city centre o Utrecht, has undergone atotal redesign over recent years. Te rst and most prominent part o the Universiteitsbibliotheek Binnenstad (University Library City Centre) and the main entrance to the ‘Dri cluster’ on the Dri are now complete. Te library accommodates an 8.5 kilome-tre collection and 350 study desks and carrels. Over the coming years, work on the adjoining section will go ahead with the sameintensity and ambition until the UB Binnenstad takes nal shape. Te whole complex contains six buildings with listed status thatserved primarily as book stores and archives. Te buildings were architecturally very dated and neglected. As a result o numerousalterations made over the years, the original structure and character o the buildings had been lost. As the architects, Groseld van

der Velde is responsible or the design, which has been produced in close consultation with DHV (detailed drawings and projectmanagement).

Te design was based on the concept o creating a natural meeting place or education and research, or employees and students, and or the university and the city in the heart o the Dri Cluster. A place where students and books take centre stage. Te core

values or the identity and perception o the complex include accessible, transparent, inviting, representative and restul. In ad-dition to providing a unctional and pragmatic solution or the programme o requirements, the design accentuates the intrinsicqualities and spatial layout o the diferent buildings, each o which has its own strengths and complements the others. Te materi-als, details and colour scheme have been specically chosen to draw the buildings together to create a unied whole. Particularattention has also been paid to integrating the complex installation techniques and the design o the interior components, such asstudy desks and carrels, search terminals, the library counter and ttings specically developed or this project. Most o the study areas are situated at the ront o the library and the collection is at right angles to the ront o the building in an open arrangement.Tis makes the building light and transparent and encourages interaction. It creates a studious, attractive work environment where

students can walk in and around the collection at their leisure and where there is space to meet or inormal contact.

Te heart o the complex is the entrance to the library that has a new layout and design that naturally complements the existingbuilding, enhancing the traditional eatures while creating a new, modern presence or the Universiteitsbibliotheek Binnenstad.

Media Plaza, by 123DV Architecture

Te Jaarbeurs is one o the biggest trade air sites in the Netherlands and is located in the centre o Utrecht. Te architects 123DVrom Rotterdam were responsible or the design and urnishing o all rooms. Te themes o »Ice« and »Fire« give the Media Plaza ahighly individual identity, with the themes applied to all the rooms by the use o colours, lighting, materials and orm. Te uniqueaspect o this project is that the lighting equipment enables each room to be immersed in a diferent colour environment, allowingits atmosphere and ambience to be individualised by the use o lighting efects. Te colours were selected on the basis o colour psy-chology theory. Tonet supplied a range o diferent chairs or this project. Te Media Plaza oundation was established in 1997 by the Netherlands government and other bodies with the aim o stimulating innovation. Media Plaza organises innovative interactiveseminars, congresses, workshops, master classes and round tables.

ext rom architect’s webside:

ConceptTe slogan o Media Plaza is `innovation leads to inspiration´. Tis is reected in the design. We envisioned an environment thatstimulates creativity. An environment where people can create their own atmosphere and mood or meetings and presentations.

Session roomsTe session rooms are equipped with a span ceiling that contains an RGB light, which can adapt any color. Te oor, walls andurniture are completely white. Tis way the entire space adapts the color o the lighting. Customers can create their own ambiance

o a `corporate colored´ environment.

Main conerence roomTis large conerence room is equipped with a transparent (EFE air cushion) roo including retractable screens. Tereore, theappearance o the room can easily change rom a dimmed presentation room into a space lled with daylight. Inspired by ancientamphitheaters, it´s possible to have meetings under the `open sky´. A central multi projection and camera unit allows interactiveprojections on all our walls. Diferent presentation layouts are possible like a podium, multi presentation or catwalk layout.

FoyerIn contrast with the conerence and session rooms, which are designed in white and aluminum, the oyer is designed in dark in-tense colors, black, red and orange. Te choice o materials and colors is based on the theme `re and ice´. o intensiy the expe-rience o the space, materials were chosen which look hard but eel so. Te walls are clad in orange skai leather. Te oor has ablack rubber nish.

Te glass doors o the main conerence room have a oil on them which makes them change color as you pass by. Te exterior o the walls which enclose the main conerence room are clad in 7000 stainless steel tiles and are designed as a huge chandelier.
