MPAVILION @ DOCKLANDS PARK

Emerging landscape architecture firm MALA Studio has developed a masterplan to transform the eastern portion of Docklands Park into a thriving cultural hub. The successful relocation of Amanda Levete’s 2015 MPavilion to this new landscape marks the completion of Stage 1 of the masterplan.

MALA’s masterplan for Melbourne’s Docklands aims to rejuvenate the area by adding anddeveloping more open spaces to attract people and activity.

Over the past 15 years, Docklands has been revitalised from an abandoned industrialprecinct into a new residential, commercial and sporting hub.

The plan enhances and celebrates the new MPavilion precinct, creating a new venuefor events with connections to community buildings, multi-purpose courts, public art andexisting parklands. It also includes a new fitness park complete with outdoor exerciseequipment, various recreational spaces, hard and soft pedestrian paths and quiet gardennooks.

Working in liaison with Maben Group, SVC manufactured a range of precast concrete seat modules, later to be combined with timber elements to produce a range of hybrid seatingfor Docklands Park. The elegant, undulating benches find balance within the gentle greenlawns and gardens, providing the perfect shaded spot for a relaxing break away from thehustle and bustle of the city.

Stage 2 of the Docklands urban renewal project is well under way. SVC looks forward to theongoing collaboration with Maben Group for MALA studio and Places Victoria.

THE NEW HISTORY OF ACLAND ST

An alliance between the City of Port Phillip, Public Transport Victoria and Yarra Trams has resulted in an urban streetscape redevelopment that has transformed the look and feel of the popular Acland Street precinct in St Kilda, Melbourne, whilst also retaining the distinct historical and cultural values of the St Kilda area.

Entrusted with the significant task of conceptualising a new streetscape design that stayedtrue to the spirit and rich history of Acland Street and yet breathed new life into the much-loved shopping strip were BKK Architects and McGregor Coxall Landscape Architects.Although expectations were high, the opportunity for out-of-the-box creativity was welcomedby the design team.

Anston Architectural and Bamstone Bluestone were engaged to work closely with thedesign team to create custom paving and furniture products for the streetscape upgrade. Both paving and furniture needed to be aesthetically pleasing, extremely durable andcompliant with strict Council regulations for MPA, slip resistance and DDA compliance.

With looming deadlines and the obligation to minimise disruption caused to the bustlingshopping and eating hub, the success of the Acland Street Redevelopment depended uponcollaboration between multiple parties, all with competing interests: architects, government, engineers, council, manufacturers and installers.

The resulting streetscape is a reflection of the Council’s dedication to upholding theindividuality of St Kilda, with most of the design elements created from scratch to match thedesign brief.

Anston is honoured to have played a role in the new history of St Kilda.Street furniture & complementary paving

A great material for strength and durability, concretealso affords great design due to its vast capabilities withform and texture.

Over the last few years, concrete has steadily gainedtraction as a material of choice. Its honest, imperfectfinish only adds to its raw charm.

Precasting concrete allows many different shapes to becreated. With the right design and moulds, curvatureand texture in concrete is highly attainable.

The versatility of the material sees it working beautifullyin conjunction with other textures. Juxtaposed withtimber, metals or stone, it can be either a supportingelement or the star of the show.

Bollards are generally seen as stationary blocks with the sole purpose of providing a meansto separate vehicular and pedestrian traffic. However, they also present designers a greatopportunity to add aesthetic quality to a space.

A bollard can be used to provide subtle lighting, to double as seating, or to bring a certainform to complement its surroundings. In that sense, concrete is a perfect material to use forbollards, as it provides design flexibility in colours, finishes and forms, while also retaining thebollard’s primary function of vehicular restriction by the strength of the material.

Due to its excellent ability to withstand weather conditions, concreteis a prime material selection for small and large scale signage andmemorial elements.

With the flexibility afforded by precasting concrete, numerous shapes, textures and colours can be produced for a grandiose effect.

Embossed lettering, colours, surface textures and combination withdifferent materials are some of the various options designers canselect to make a neutral concrete sign stand out. This versatility hasseen concrete grow steadily in popularity, as the market gravitatestowards higher demand of this understated yet elegant material.

PLANTERS

A beautiful combination of live greenery and architecturally engineered stone

Concrete planters are a long-lasting container choice forgardens and urban landscaping. Unlike wood or plasticcontainers that will rot or become brittle over time, concreteplanters last for generations.

Aside from their main function of housing greenery, concreteplanters do a stellar job of providing security barriers topedestrian spaces. Due to their weight and structuraldensity, they are an imposing deterrent to drivers andare often placed streetside, or to create a boundary for apedestrian space.

Planters are made to order in various finishes and customcolours, textures and sizes.

LANDSCAPE FEATURES

The inclusion of intricate, well-designed elements adds a layer of complexity to the overarching concept of a landscape design.

The natural landscape is a thing of beauty on its own, but adding manmadefeatures in conjunction with clever positioning of organic elements can set a certainatmosphere, creating defined spaces with specific uses.

In catering to today’s residential and commercial markets, there is a demand forunique, bespoke architectural elements that make a statement in their surroundings.SVC and Anston are proud to have collaborated on some such projects to developand produce these inspiring pieces.

STAIR TREADS

The use of concrete for stair treads is a widely-appreciated choice due to the material’s strength, durability, aesthetic quality and relatively low maintenance requirements.

Architectural Concrete Stair Treadsare available for DIY installation witha compatible steel stair stringer. These stair systems are sturdy, durable and elegant in their minimaldesign. They can be used in bothinternal and external applications.

Additional features can be addedto the concrete stair tread, such astactile strips for better slip resistance.

Custom stair treads are available toorder with flexibility in selections forcolour, dimension, texture and finish.

KERBING &SLEEPERS

Thoughtful consideration of bordering and earth retention solutions can

set certain atmospheres within a landscape.

The introduction of kerb and borderingsolutions can smarten up the appearance

of roads, gardens, parks and naturestrips. The neat, straight lines of kerbs

and sleepers bring visual attention to thearea that is being bordered.

Additional to their functionality indrainage, separation, pavement

strengthening and debris and earthretention, kerbs and sleepers also

present opportunities for designers to addunique landscape design features.

A range of standard kerb unitsand sleepers are readily available.

Custom kerbing and sleeper units aremanufactured to order in a variety of

sizes, colours, finishes and specialsurface treatments.

GRAPHIC CONCRETE

The opportunity to add an image or pattern onto a concrete surface allows increased flexibility in design.

There are a number of techniques tointroduce added surface treatments intoprecast concrete elements, in order toproduce a striking visual aesthetic thatdiffers from the norm.

Graphic concrete is still fairly uncommonin the urban architectural landscape. It provides an opportunity to create aunique point of interest within a project, whether it be used in concrete pavers, furniture, cladding or bespoke pieces.

We can provide a range of existingpatterns, or work together with you toemboss your own pattern or image into achosen concrete surface.
