  • Awarding Ceremony of the International Isover Architectural Contest

for Students, 24 May 2006, Sighisoara

    III

  • The architectural contest for students was born in 2003 in Belgrade. In 2005 it already became international, involving 6 countries from the Balkan region. In December 2005 on official ceremony the project was awarded with the prestigious award for PR and communication of Saint-Gobain Corporation the “Star of communication”. The idea of stimulating young people think about thermal and sound comfort, exchange ideas and gather knowledge about contemporary insulation solutions was highly appreciated.

    HISTORY

ASSIGNMENT Saint-Gobain Isover Romania hosted the 2006 Architectural contest for students with participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia&Slovakia. The task was reconstruction of existing industrial building in Bucharest into a dance club. Along with the transformation of the exterior to a modern and attractive public building the students had to solve some specific thermal and sound insulation problems.

The heat loss through the whole building envelope should not exceed 0, 20 W/m2Ê.

Neighbour buildings - a hospital, a school and several residential buildings had to be protected from the high sound level, reaching occasionally up to 100 dB in disco clubs through proper sound insulation of the building envelope. On the other hand interior dance hall had to be provided with efficient sound absorption solutions in order to guarantee pleasant sound comfort, technically expressedby the reverberation time period.

The final stage took place in Sighisoara in central part of Romania from 22nd to 24th May 2006.

The town was first mentioned in 1191 by the chronicler Krauss. By 1280 it was known by the Latin name of Castrum Sex, and by 1298 by the Saxon name of Schespurch resp. Schaesbrich. By 1337 Sighisoara had become a royal center for the kings, who awarded the settlement urban status in 1367 as the Civitas de Segusvar. Central Sighisoara has preserved in an exemplary way the features of a small medieval fortified city. It has been listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

    PLACE

    IV

  • The best projects from the national contest stage of participating countries were presented. The jury consisting of professors from the five Architectural Universities, Isover Managers and Romanian experts had the difficult task to assess the works. Main criteria were the architectural impact, functionality and harmony with surrounding buildings; knowledge and correct application of ISOVER products for implementing thermal and sound insulation requirements of the assignment.

Slovakian architectural school earned great success winning the first 3 places. An outstanding Romanian project deserved a second “silver” award. Three additional mentions were given for projects from Bulgaria, Serbia and Macedonia.

Today it is possible to build houses (residential and non-residential) which need no conventional heating or cooling system. The building is heated by passive means such as solar radiation through the windows and the internal sources (people and house hold compliances). This is a big challenge and responsibility and demands phantasm and the ambition of the young generation. That’s why Saint-Gobain Isover organizes an architectural contest for students every year. We gratefully thank every student and the ambitious professors that made this contest and dialogue possible. This little brochure is meant to be a souvenir in respect of the great work of the young people who proved that energy efficiency and creative architecture goes hand in hand. We wish all students a great success in real live and let us thank you again for great participation.
