1 INTRODUCTIONTheAAProfessionalPracticeandPracticalExperienceExamination(ARB/RIBAPart3)isrecognisedbytheArchitectsRegistrationBoard,'ARB',andtheRoyalInstituteofBritishArchitects,'RIBA',asthefinalqualifyingexaminationforobtainingregisteredstatusintheUKandprofessionalmembershiprespectively.
Theseminarcourseandexaminationareprovidedtwiceannually.ThecourseisofferedtothoseintendingtotaketheexaminationandtothosewhoarequalifiedandwishtomaintainorenhancetheirknowledgeofcurrentprofessionalpracticeissuesasContinuingProfessionalDevelopment.Theexaminationisopentoeligiblestudents.ItisnotofferedtothosewhohavequalifiedandregisteredasarchitectsintheEU,ChannelIslandsortheIsleofMan.
ThePart3courseandexaminationisledandorganisedbytheAAProgrammeDirectorPart3supportedbytheAAProfessionalStudiesCoordinator.TheexaminationispreparedbytheProgrammeDirectorinliaisonwiththeAABoardofPart3ExaminersappointedbytheAA,whichcomprisesProfessionalExaminersandaChiefExaminerwhoalsoactsasExternalExaminer.
TheProgrammeDirectorPart3isalsotheAA'sProfessionalStudiesAdvisor,responsibleforthecoordination,organisation,supervisionandmonitoringofStage1(post-Part1/YearOut),Stage2(post-Part2)practicaltraining,andofpost-Part2practicaltrainingbeingundertakenaspartofthePart3course.PSAsupervisionofpracticaltrainingexperienceisalsoavailabletostudentswhohaveobtainedtheirPart1orPart2qualificationsatotherrecognisedinstitutionsorschoolsofarchitecture.
2 PURPOSETheExaminationisintendedtoestablishwhetheracandidateiscompetenttopracticeArchitectureintheUnitedKingdom.ThedefinitionofcompetenceissetoutbymeetingtheminimumstandardsprovidedintheARB/RIBAProfessionalCriteriaforPart3.CandidateswishingtosittheProfessionalPracticeExaminationinArchitecture(Part3)arerequiredtohavesuccessfullycompletedarecognisedqualificationatPart1andPart2level,ortheirequivalentrecognisedexaminations.Inaddition,candidatesarerequiredtohavecompletedtherelevantprofessionalpracticeexperiencebeforeundertakingtheExamination.
Eachcandidate'sexperienceoflearninganddevelopmentinprofessionalpracticewilldiffer,dependinguponthetypeofproject,typeandlocationofpracticeandmanagementprocessesundertaken,andthepreparationfortheexaminationmustthereforebeapproachedinastructuredway.
ThecandidateshouldmanagetherelationshipbetweenprofessionalexperienceandacademicstudytoprovidecoverageoftheProfessionalCriteria,presentingacriticallyreflectivebodyofworkthatcomplieswiththerequirementsoftheprofessionalstudiesadviserorcourseprovider.TomeettheProfessionalCriteria,thecandidate'sexperienceshouldincludeevidenceofcommercialawareness,self-management,professionalcompetenceandintegrity.Asuccessfulcandidateshouldalsobeabletodemonstrateauthorship,knowledge,effectivecommunicationsskills,andreasoningandunderstandinginrelationtoallissueswithintheProfessionalCriteria.

3 ELIGIBILITYThosewhointendtotakethePart3courseasCPDarenotrequiredtomeetthefollowingeligibilityproceduresorrequirements.StudentswhointendtotakethePart3examinationmust:

HavesatisfactorilycompletedtheInitialAssessmentbytheAAProgrammeDirectorcomprising:

• EvidenceofARB/RIBAPart1pass,orpassatequivalentandrecognisedexamination
• EvidenceofARB/RIBAPart2passorpassatequivalentandrecognisedexamination
• HaverecordedandauthenticatedtheirworkexperiencetodateofsubmissionofInitialAssessmentintheRIBAPEDRformator,forthosemeetingtherequirementsoftheRIBAashavingatleast6years'appropriateexperienceoutside5years'academicstudyandhavingachievedagreaterlevelofresponsibility,theCertificateofProfessionalExperiencebutsubjecttotheagreementofitsuseinadvancebytheAAProgrammeDirector.

• CareerExperiencematrix,completedtodateofsubmissionofInitialAssessment

Candidatesshouldhaverecentlycompletedaminimumof24months'practicalexperience
underthedirectsupervisionofaprofessionalworkingintheconstructionindustry,whichshould
includeatleast12monthsworkingintheEEA,ChannelIslandsortheIsleofMan,underthe
directsupervisionofanarchitect.
'Recently'isdefinedas:atleast12ofthe24months'experienceshouldhavebeenundertakenin
thetwoyearsimmediatelybeforetakingthePart3exam.

4 CONDITIONSThefollowingconditionsapply:
1 ThosewhohaveachievedUKregistrationasanarchitectwiththeARBthroughotherroutesarenotpermittedentrytotheAAPart3examination
2 ThosewhoarequalifiedandregisteredasarchitectsintheEUarenotpermittedentrytotheAAPart3examination
3 CandidateswhohavegainedtheiracademicqualificationsoutsidetheUKmustfirstapplytotheARBtoestablishandconfirmtheirexemptionfromthePart1andPart2Examinations.ThewrittenconfirmationofthisbytheARBisrequiredaspartofthestudent'sInitialAssessmentsubmission
4 TherecognitionofProfessionalQualificationssetoutinEUdirectivesprovidethatthecountryorcountriesofacademicstudyarerelevantinrespectofastudent'sabilitytoqualifyintheEUandalsototheopportunityorrequirementfortakingthePart3examinationintheUK.RefertotheARBforclarification.
5 TheARBdoesnotcurrentlyrestrictthesequenceinwhichstudentsachievePart1,Part2andPart3.However,theAAdoesnotpermitentrytothePart3courseandexaminationtostudentswhohavenotachievedpassesatbothParts1and2orattheirequivalentandrecognisedexaminations
6 BeforetheirfirstattemptattheAAPart3examination,studentsarerequiredtohaveattendedthePart3course.
7 TheregistrationperiodforPart3courseandexaminationis4years.
8 StudentswhohavepreviouslyattendedthePart3coursemayattenduptothreeseminarsinasubsequentcoursewithoutadditionalcharge.
9 Studentsarenotrequiredtoattendthecourseandattempttheexaminationinthesamecycle.
10 RegistrationonthePart3courseincludesPSAsupervisionofpracticaltrainingduringtheperiodofregistration
11 OldformatpaperRIBA/ASSALogbooksareonlyacceptableforexperiencegainedbefore2004.
12 ThemaximumnumberofattemptattheAAPart3examinationthatacandidatemaymakeisthree.Inaddition,exceptionalcircumstancesmaydeterminethatthemaximumnumberofattemptswillbereduced.
13 StudentswhohaveamedicalorotherconditionordisabilitytheywishtobetakenintoaccountmustadvisethePart3ProgrammeDirectorinwritingatthetimeofregistrationandprovidesupportingformalassessmentdocumentationproducedbyanappropriatelyqualifiedmedicalpractitionerorotherauthority.ProspectivestudentsshouldbeawarethatthephysicalcharacteristicsoftheSchool'sprincipalpremisesinprotectedbuildingscurrentlyimposesomelimitations.
14 ApplicantsforthePart3SeminarCourseand/orPart3examinationarerequiredtojointheAAasmembers.

5 STRUCTUREThecourseandexaminationareprovidedtwiceannually:inSpringandinAutumn.TheAutumncourseisprovidedoveratwo-weekperiod,followedbytheexamination;theSpringcourseisprovidedonSaturdaysoveraperiodof11weeks,followedbytheexamination.
Withtheexceptionofthedocumentsthatrequiretobesubmittedaspartoftheexamination,allsubmissionsaremadeindigitalformat.StudentsarenotrequiredtopresentPEDRorotherrecordsforreviewinperson.TutorialsupportbytheProgrammeDirectorisavailablebyemail,orbyphoneorinpersonbyappointment,andstudentsarefreetodiscussanyaspectoftheirexperience,thecourseortheexamination.
Studentsarenotrequiredtotakethecourseandtheexaminationinthesamesession:manystudentsfinditextremelyhelpfultofamiliarisethemselveswiththesyllabusthroughattendingthecourseandthenprepareforandtaketheexaminationatasubsequentsession.Studentswhohaveattendedthecourseinonesessionmayattenduptothreeseminarsinasubsequentcoursewithoutadditionalcharge.
6 SEQUENCEStudentsapplyingforadmissiontothecourseandexaminationarefirstrequiredtocompleteanapplicationforanInitialAssessment:thiscomprisesasetofdocumentsthatenablestheProgrammeDirectortoreviewthestudent'seligibility,qualificationsandexperience.DetailsoftherequirementsfortheInitialAssessmentapplicationareprovidedbelow.
TheInitialAssessmentdoesnotformpartoftheexamination,butadmissiontotheexaminationisdependantonpassingoftheInitialAssessment.StudentsintendingtotaketheexaminationarestronglyrecommendedtopasstheInitialAssessmentbeforeattendingthecourse.
TheresultoftheInitialAssessmentiseither'pass'or'fail';theprogrammeDirector/PSAwillprovidefeedbacktounsuccessfulstudents.StudentsmayattempttheInitialAssessmentonupto3occasionsintotal,andarerequiredtopaytheapplicationfeeoneachattempt.
Asplacesfortheexaminationarelimited,studentsmustregistertheirintentiontotaketheexaminationbyregisteringtotakePart3examwiththeProfessionalStudiesCoordinatornolaterthan2weeksbeforetheissueofPaper1oftheexamination.Candidatesshouldalsonotethat,whilereasonableeffortswillbemadetoaccommodatethenumbersofcandidates,thereisnoguaranteeofbeingabletoregisterforanyspecificsessionoftheAAPart3exam.

3 RecordsofPracticalTraining

1 ProfessionalExperienceandDevelopmentRecord,'PEDR':
• ThemajorityofstudentspreparetheirrecordsintheRIBAPEDRformat.
• PEDRrecordsmustbefullycompleteduptothedateofthesubmissionforInitialAssessment:signedanddatedbythestudent,andreviewed,signedanddatedbythestudent'semploymentmentor,andreviewed,signedanddatedbytherelevantPSAbeforesubmission.
2 CertificateofProfessionalExperience,'CPE'
SubjecttoagreementofitsuseinadvancebytheAAProgrammeDirectorPart3,recordsofpracticalexperiencemayberecordedintheRIBAorAACertificateofProfessionalExperienceformat,fullycompleteduptothedateofthesubmissionoftheInitialAssessment.
3 TheAAappliesthefollowinginrespectofPSAservices:
1 TheAAPSAwillreviewandsignoffthePEDRrecordsofstudentscompletedduringtheirperiodofregistrationattheAA;however,PEDRsheetsthatarenotsubmittedinaccordancewiththerequiredtimeperiodsevenifwithintheregistrationperiodmaynotbesignedunlessanreasonacceptabletotheAAPSAisprovidedinwritingbythestudent.
2 TheAAPSAwillnotsignPEDRrecordsforanystudentwhoisnotcurrentlyregisteredwiththeAAincludingAAPart2graduates.

3 Inexceptionalcircumstances,andinaccordancewiththeRIBA'sregulations,theAAPSAmaysignoffthePEDRsheetsofstudentsrecordingexperiencethatwasundertakenbeforeregistrationattheAA.
4 TheAAPSAwillnotrevieworsignoffthePEDRsheetswhichcover,orshouldhavecovered,aperiodwherethestudentwasregisteredatanotherinstitution;inthesecircumstances,studentswillneedtoobtaintheirpreviousinstitutionstoobtaintherelevantPSA'ssignoff.
5 TheAAwillconsiderapplicationsfortheuseoftheCPEonlyifstudentsmeettherequirementsoftheRIBAashavingatleast6years'appropriateexperienceoutside5years'academicstudyandhavingachievedagreaterlevelofresponsibility.
6 CPErecordsarenormallycompletedretrospectively;itiscriticalthateachCPErecordisfullycompleted,signedanddatedbythestudent,andthatthefullcontactdetailandsignatureofthestudent'semployerattherelevantpracticeisprovided.CPEswhichdonotcontainthisinformationwillnotbeaccepted.
EvenifstudentshavecompletedtheminimumrequiredperiodofpracticaltrainingbythedateofthesubmissionforInitialAssessment,theyshouldcontinuetocompletetheirrecordsuntiltheytaketheexamination.Thiswillallowthemtopresentthemostrecentandarguablymostrelevantexperience,andalsotomeettheARBandRIBArequirementsinrespectofcurrencyofexperience.
ARB/RIBAregulationspermitnon-architectstoactassignatories.Theymusthoweverberecognisedassuitablyqualifiedconstructionindustryprofessionalsandshouldhaveexperienceofarchitecturalpractice.TheAA'scompliancewithvisaregulationsmayrestrictaffectedstudentstoobtainingpracticalexperienceexclusivelyunderthedirectsupervisionofaregisteredarchitect,andstudentsarerequiredtoclarifythiswiththeProgrammeDirectorandtheAA.
Candidateswhoareprincipalsoftheirpractices,orareotherwisenotemployedbyapractice,mustobtainthePart3ProgrammeDirector'sadviceonacceptablerecordingofpracticalexperience,andmustnotethattheAAstrictlyappliestheARBandRIBA'sregulationsinrespectofrequiringexperiencetobeunderthedirectsupervisionofaprofessionalworkingintheconstructionindustryoranarchitect.
4 CareerAppraisalessay:criticalreviewofpersonalprofessionaldevelopmentAlsoassessedatexaminationifpracticaltrainingrecordsareinCPEformat.
Thisisa2000wordessayandshouldbepreparedassuch.Thesummarybelowisindicativeofthetopicstheessayshouldcover,butisnotarigidprescription.Dependingonthecharacteristicsofcareerdevelopmenttodate,candidatesmaywishtogivemoreemphasistoparticularissuesandaspectsoftheirprofessionaldevelopment.

Unlessotherwiseagreed,candidateswhodonothaveEnglishasafirstlanguagemustsubmitevidenceofEnglishlanguagecompetence.TheminimumstandardisIELTS6.5.Scannedimagesoftheoriginalcertificatesmustbesubmitted.

TobeprovidedwiththeInitialAssessmentapplication.ConfidentialinformationusedbytheAAforinternaladministrationpurposesand,ifapplicable,inconnectionwithcommunicationswithUKVisasandImmigration.
2 Studentsvisastatus
StudentssubjecttoUKvisaregulationsmustdeclaretheirstatusasartoftheapplicationforInitialAssessmentontheregistrationform.Candidate’sidentityinformationmaybedisclosedtotheUKVIasevidenceoftheAA’scompliancewithcandidatemonitoringarrangementsandsponsorshipconditions.
3 Notificationofdisabilityandprovisionofsupportingevidence
StudentswhohaveamedicalorotherconditionordisabilitytheywishtobetakenintoaccountmustadvisetheProgrammeDirectorinwritingatthetimeofregistrationandprovidesupportingformalassessmentdocumentationproducedbyanappropriatelyqualifiedmedicalpractitionerorotherauthority.ProspectivestudentsshouldbeawarethatthephysicalcharacteristicsoftheSchool'sprincipalpremisesinprotectedbuildingscurrentlyimposesomelimitations.

9 THECOURSE9.1 SEMINARSERIES
TheAAseminarseriesprovidesinformationonthetopicscoveredbytheARB/RIBAProfessionalCriteriaatPart3.Itshouldnotberegardedasafoundationprogramme.ItisalsoprovidedasaCPDprogrammeforqualifiedarchitectsorconstructionprofessionals.InSpring,thecourseisrunasa‘SaturdaySchool’onSaturdaysbetweenmid-Januaryandmid-March.InAutumn,itisruninlateSeptemberasa2-weekblockcourse.
Note:Thecoursemaynotfollowthissequence.SEMINAR1-AnintroductiontotheCourseandExaminationAhalf-daybriefingseminarbythePart3ProgrammeDirectorthatgivescandidatesaninsightintotheexamprocessandexaminationpreparationtechniques.Also,anopportunitytomeetothersonthecourse.
SEMINAR2-StandardFormsofBuildingContractAtwo-dayseminarthatexaminesthestandardformsofbuildingcontractingreatdetailandalsoaddresseshowothercontractformsincommonuserelate.Thisisanessentialreference,particularlyasitincorporateslatestrevisionsandinterpretationsrelatingtothecontract.
SEMINAR3-ProfessionalRiskAvoidanceAhalf-dayseminarfocusedonproblemsofgreatestimpactintheprofessionalofficeincludingfrequentcausesofclaimsagainstarchitectsandhowthesemaybeavoided.
SEMINAR4-TownPlanningAone-dayseminarthatprovidesanintroductiontothecurrentplanningsystem,planningpolicyframeworkandtherequirementsandproceduresforplanningpermission,planningapplicationandappeals,andthespecialcontrolsapplicabletohistoricbuildingsandconservationareas.
SEMINAR5-LegislationAffectingBuildingsAone-dayseminarwhichlooksindetailatthecurrentlegislation,includingthatrelatingtotheBuildingRegulationsandPartyWallthatarchitectsmustconsider,andhowitisadministered.
SEMINAR6-PracticeandProjectManagementAtwo-dayseminarthatexaminesthecomplexareasofpracticeandprojectmanagement.Topicsconsideredincludethecontextforarchitecturalpractice,principlesofmanagementindesignandconstruction,practicemanagement,projectadministrationanddisputeresolution.Theseminartopicsareillustratedasappropriatebyavarietyofpracticalexamplesandinvolvecandidatesintheconsiderationofprofessionalandethicalsituations.

9.2 THECONTRACTGAMEThistwo-dayinteractiveworkshopisdesignedasastand-aloneprogrammethatstudentscantakeasanadd-ontothemaincourseorseparately.Itisanideal'top-up'forthosejustabouttosittheexam.Thisrole-playingcoursetakesplaceduringaweekendinthemiddleoftheSeminarprogramme.

TheJCTStandardBuildingContractisutilisedasreferenceanditisnecessaryforteamplayerstohavemadeastudyofthedocumentbeforehand.Eachofthe36scenariosmustbeansweredfullyandanswersareintheformofcontractcorrespondenceortheuseofforms.Itisalsoaraceagainsttime,andagainsttheotherteams.Bothguidanceandoppositionareprovidedbythecontrollerswhotakeontherolesofthepartieswithwhomtheplayerscorrespond.

13.3 PRACTICALTRAININGANDEXPERIENCEANDSUPERVISIONPURPOSE
Workpracticeandpracticaltrainingarefundamentalelementsinthedevelopmentofprofessionalcompetence.ThisisrecognisedintheruleslaiddownbytheRIBAforrecordingworkpracticeinthePEDRandinexaminationsinarchitecturalpractice.ScrutinyandappraisalofthetotalityofstudentsworkexperienceisacentralfeatureoftheExam.WhileacandidatemustgainaminimumperiodofworkpracticetobeeligibletosittheExamination,itisnotthedurationbutthequalityanddiversityoflearningfromworkthatisofmajorsignificancetotheExaminers.
PRACTICALTRAININGREQUIREMENTS:readinconjunctionwithsection7
Candidatesmusthaveexperiencedandrecordedaminimumoftwoyearsfulltimesupervisedpracticaltrainingofwhich:
Eachperiodofemploymentmakinguptheminimumforcomplianceisnormallynolessthan3monthsinduration
Candidatesarerequiredtocomplete24monthsofrecordedandauthenticatedpracticaltrainingandworkpracticeexperience.
UnderARBRule13b,thereisgreaterflexibilityoverthetypeandlocationofpracticalexperiencethatacandidatecanrecord.Eligiblecandidatesmusthave"… recentlycompleteda
minimumof24months'practicalexperienceunderthedirectsupervisionofaprofessional
workingintheconstructionindustrywhichshouldincludeatleast12monthsworkinginthe
EEA,ChannelIslandsortheIsleofMan,underthedirectsupervisionofanarchitect."
TheexperienceneednotbeintheUK,nordoesitneedtobepostPart2.AtleastoneyearshouldbeintheEEA,theChannelIslandsortheIsleofMan,underthedirectsupervisionofanarchitect.Inreality,andbecausetheAArequirespart3candidatestohavepassedARB/RIBAParts1and2beforebeingpermittedentrytothePart3CourseandExamination,eachcandidatewillhavehadatleast12months'experiencepost-Part2.
Atleast12ofthe24months'experienceshouldhavebeenundertakeninthetwoyearsimmediatelybeforetakingthePart3exam.
Incandidateguidance,thebenefitofgainingUKexperienceincontractadministrationinaperiodclosetothePart3examinationisstressed.
Ifpartofthisexperienceisinself-employment,theymuststillshowthattherehasbeensupervisionbyaUKARBregisteredarchitect.
IfpartofthisexperienceisoutsidetheUK,theymustshowthattheirsupervisorisfullyregisteredlocally.
ForcandidateswhohaveattendedaUKschoolofarchitecture,theymustsubmittheirexperienceinthePEDRformatandcomplywiththerecordingguidelineslaiddownbytheRIBA.
SubjecttoagreementinadvancebythePart3ProgrammeDirector,candidateswithatleast6years'relevantpracticalexperienceinadditionto5year'sacademicstudy,mayrecordtheirexperienceinthePEDRformatoralternativelyintheRIBAorAACertificateofProfessional

Experience.AcombinationisalsoacceptableprovidethePart3ProgrammeDirector'sagreementinadvancehasbeenobtained.
Forcandidatesworkingparttimetheaboverulesalsoapplybutmustbeadjustedintermsofthefulltimeequivalenttimeperiod.e.g.10monthsat20hoursperweekisequivalentto5monthsat40hrsperweek.
Ifstudentsareself-employedorworkinginanorganisationwithoutasupervisingarchitecttheymusthavearegisteredarchitectwhoactsastheirmentorand,onaregularbasis,reviewstheirworkandgivesguidance.ThearrangementsforthismustbeagreedwiththePart3ProgrammeDirector.WhilethisrequirementstrictlyonlyappliestotheperiodofworkexperiencetheydesignateasmeetingARB/RIBApracticaltrainingcompliancerequirement,inreality,thisarrangementisprudentinanyeventifstudentsarepracticingalone.
Fromempiricalevidence,mostcandidateswhopassthePart3examhavehad3yearspracticaltrainingofwhich2yearsislikelytohavebeenintheUK.Thereasonsarevarious,howeverthesignificantfactorsappeartobethatitusuallytakessometimeinanofficebeforeastudentistrustedwiththelevelofresponsibilitytheyneedtocarryoutparticulartasks,particularlycontractadministration.Also,projectcyclescanoftenbelongandittakessometimebeforeastudentisabletotakeaprojectontositeandthroughthefullrangeofconstructionstages.
Counsellingforallcandidatesisbyappointment,normallybytelephone.Ifrequestedbythestudent,thePSAwillvisitthemintheirownoffice.CounsellingisavailableuntilthestartoftheExaminationanditisessentialthatallstudentsdiscusstheirplansfortakingtheExaminationwellinadvanceoftheexaminationdateinordertogivetimeforexaminationpreparation.5-6monthsisadvised.
13.4 OVERSEASSTUDENTSANDPRACTICALTRAININGTogainworkexperienceafterthecompletionoforexemptionfromPart2intheUK,candidateswhoarenotnationalsoftheEuropeanEconomicArea(EEA)orwhodonotholdthestatusof'UKresident'musthaveavalidpermittowork.
AllYearoutandPostPart2AAgraduatessubjecttoUKvisaregulationsmustberegisteredwiththeAAPSA.EveniftheyplantochangeschoolsforPart2or3,theirregistrationmustremainvaliduntiltheyregisterwiththeirnewschool.Forinternationalstudentsonavisa,theirpostPart2yearshouldbeintheUKotherwisetheirvisaconditionsmaybecompromised.
ForstudentswhoarefromoutsidetheEEAandsubjecttoUKVIvisaregulationsandwhoarenotAAgraduates,registrationontheAAProfessionalPracticeandPracticalExperienceCourseandExamination(ARB/RIBAPart3)doesnotinferthattheAAisabletoofferanyformofvisasponsorship.However,thisdoesnotaffecttheireligibilitytoattendtheseminarcourseorsitthePart3exambuttheywillmustarrangewiththeiremployerappropriatesponsorshipandvisaarrangementsandobtaintheAA'sagreementinadvanceinwriting.
StudentswhoexperiencedifficultywiththesearrangementsshoulddiscussthematterwiththeAAPart3ProgrammeDirectorandAAComplianceOfficer.
