Themed Archinature: Architects’ Summit on Collaborative Action and Leadership (ASCAL), the Summit logo is inspired by “Nature’s compass. “As a UAP navigational tool, both professionals and professional organization are driven and directed towards a common goal of sustainable development.

Similarly, each of the four leaves represent the four areas of UAP. But the leaves not only define the jurisdiction of each area; they categorize the natural resources, which are necessary tools and treasures in community building and development.

In turn, the United Architects of the Philippines advocates and is committed to efficient and effective architectural services, supported by collaborative action under one leadership.

My warmest greetings to the United Architects of the Philippines, as you hold the Architects’ Summit for Collaborative Action and Leadership, themed “Archinature: Architects in the Service of the Natural Environment.”

Through the years, your institution has tapped a vital resource – the inherent creativity and ingenuity of the Filipino – even as you have contributed to a constantly changing landscape. Your field shoulders unique responsibilities to our citizenry, our heritage, and our nation’s balanced adaptation to the advances of globalized contemporary culture. However, with the increasing demands of our economy placing an enormous strain on our environment, we must also strike a balance between our development agenda and a responsible stewardship of our natural resources. As such, it heartens us to know that you have gathered in light of this objective, and we wish our nation’s premier architects much success.

May this Congress renew your commitment to your vocation, that you will emerge from this gathering remaining mindful of your duty to preserve and foster our culture, to look toward the future, and above all, to serve the citizenry to your utmost ability. In turn, our administration continues to work tirelessly on a government that empowers our enterprises and leads them to the fruition of the nation’s social goals.

Warmest greetings to the United Architects of the Philippines as you hold the Architects’ Summit for Collaborative Action and Leadership.

I Admire your initiative to effect positive change in our country through education of the youth and collaborative action with government and non-government organizations.

The changes in the world’s climate have pushed governments across the globe to reassess and realign their policies in order to mitigate natural disasters.

Thus, I support your group’s advocacy of Archinature, where hopefully, our country will be developed according to the needs and considerations of ecology and also of our cultural heritage.

I am praying for the success of your summit, and subsequent actions stemming from it.

The Department of Tourism warmly welcomes the participants of the Architects’ Summit for Collaborative Action and Leadership to the island paradise of Boracay, Philippines. We congratulate the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) for holding such a summit to discuss the latest trends, and the practice of the field of architecture, for our architects to stay in the forefront of the profession.

With the new brand campaign, “It’s more fun in the Philippines,” we enjoin every Filipino to participate in word-of-mouth marketing thru social media or through other ways possible. That the Philippines is a fun-filled destination of 7,107 islands, teeming with pristine beaches, delectable food, and warm people, but also steep with rich history and culture, through our churches and structures that date back even to the Spanish and American times.

There lies a big role to play for our Filipino architects, in our grand design to develop more lasting and eco-friendly structures in our communities, not only in the urban areas, but also in the countryside, to help drive more tourists to our country.

It is not just in preserving and protecting our country’s rich history, heritage and culture that you can directly help us, but also in the partnerships and collaborations we build hereon in well-thought of designs and creation of structures that bank on simplicity, functionality and sustainability.

Together, we must work to package the Philippines not only as a place where people can have lots of fun, but also as an investment haven and second home.

Mabuhay ang Arkitektong Pilipino!

MAN

DO N. ALLI

Our warmest greetings to you all!I, as PRBoA Acting Chair and the two (2) Members of the PRBoA, namely Architect (Ar)

Angeline T. Chua Chiaco and Ar Marietta B. Segovia, congratulate the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), the PRBoA’s duly accredited integrated and accredited professional organization of architects (IAPOA) under Sec. 40 of Republic Act No. 9266, otherwise known as the Architecture Act of 2004, on the occasion of its 02-04 February 2012 Architects’ Summit on Collaborative Action and Leadership at the La Carmela de Boracay Beach Resort, under the theme “ARCHINATURE”. These warm greetings go to all the UAP Members, led by the UAP National President (NP), Ar Ramon S. Mendoza, fuap and to UAP Immediate Past NP, Ar Ana Mangalino-Ling, fuap, apec ar (who were the 2010 NPs responsible for the UAP’s unprecedented 4th PRC Most Outstanding APO Award), to all the Summit organizers led by its Director, Ar Lora B. Rivera, fuap, to all the UAP Members in attendance, to the honored Guests, especially those from the ARCASIA, and to the loyal friends and supporters of the UAP.

I would have wanted to join You but the PRBoA must still attend to the release of the results of the licensure examination for architects (LEA) held 27 and 29 January 2012 in Manila. I shall also be away on a father-and-son camping trip this weekend with my youngest son. I would have gladly joined the beach soccer event, having played the beautiful game with the Italians and other nationals for about 10 years.

While the PRBoA is sure that many of the concerned UAP members are well aware of what has transpired with the Court of Appeals (CA) recently, it is still the PRBoA’s express wish that many areas of cooperation between the PRBoA and UAP shall continue to flourish and that these are kept evolving and moving forward in order to help attain our shared primary goal of the full implementation and enforcement of R.A. No. 9266, a valid and subsisting special and later law, its 2004 implementing rules and regulations (IRR), the pertinent PRBoA Resolutions and other derivative regulations, all of which are in full effect, and are supposedly not affected by the CA decision, which was on an entirely separate matter i.e. mere executive issuances pertaining to P.D. No. 1096 (the 1977 NBCP).

It is also the added wish of the PRBoA that it is able to receive the full, unqualified and continuing support of all registered and licensed Architects (RLAs) on the current and future PRBoA initiatives which directly impact the architectural profession and the practice of the nearly 28,000 Philippine-registered architects (RAs) situated all over the world (almost 7,000 or 25% of which were registered by the incumbent PRBoA). The PRBoA continues to hope that the value of the services of the RLAs may be fully and unequivocably appreciated on a progressive and continuing basis, by the Philippine market for professional architectural services and by the Philippine Government itself (at all its levels).

Again, the PRBoA extends its felicitations to and wishes of continuing success for the UAP and All of its Members in their worthy endeavors, their guests and loved ones, and to all of You in attendance during this Summit!

May the Lord bless and guide us all and the resurgent Philippine architecture profession as well! May You all have safe journeys to and from the Summit.

On behalf of the provincial government and the people of Aklan, my warmest congratulations and welcome to the United Architects of the Philippines as they converge at the La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel for the event, “Archinature: architects in the Service of the natural environment,” February 3-4, 2012.

Architects are frontliners in our nation building efforts particularly in infrastructure development, the primary showcase of a country’s progress. And architectural creations are not only statements of our professional competence; they are also reflections of our culture.

May I, therefore, commend the United Architects of the Philippines for consistently and collectively endeavoring to improve their members’ professional competence.

Their unity and continuing quest for professional advancement takes greater significance from the fact that the Philippines has limited resources and the maximization of the use of these resources in infrastructure is a must.

On behalf of the United Architects of the Philippines, it is with extreme pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings and my best wishes to all the participants, organizers and sponsors of the ARCHITECTS’ SUMMIT ON COLLABORATIVE ACTION AND LEADERSHIP to be held on February 3-4, 2012 at La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel Station 2, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan, Philippines.

Inspired by the theme “Archi-Nature”, the event attempts to draw designers’ attention to the nature – reconnect to the earth, through the built environment. As the famous architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright once said “study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you”, nature provides us with an amazing array of solutions for many complex problems that we face today, and architecture can benefit from this kind of approach. At times what may seem as “simple” in nature can translate to better design solutions that are more efficient, sustainable and healthy. Yes, nature is inspirational but it is also a part of our world which we can study more deeply – extracting creative solutions that we can apply today.

Therefore, what can we learn from the Summit? Nature can teach us about systems, materials, processes, structures and aesthetics, just to name a few. By delving more deeply into how nature solves problems that we experience today, we can extract timely solutions and find new directions for our built environments. As architects, we can benefit from this concept “Archi-Nature” to make buildings better by pushing for more natural, integrated, efficient and healthy solutions. We also need to take a look at the role aesthetics plays in nature – with the way function and form so synergistically merge. Perhaps this is a way for buildings to harmonize with nature in renewed ways – making built environments more environmentally sound and healthy for occupants.

Dubbed as the “travelling summit”, the event therefore is necessary to allow participants to appreciate the role of architect as the artistic intermediary charged with creating a responsive, responsible architecture, and to forge collaborations with other professionals in order to bring about the right solutions.

In closing, we do not promise to give you the best two days of your life in Boracay. Rather, we aspire to give you two days that will be an enduring part of your life not only for the memory of the Architects’ Summit but also because of present administration’s desire to truly redefine service to members.

I would like to congratulate the organizers of the Architects Summit on Collaborative Action and Leadership for having successfully launched this undertaking despite the many other activities of the UAP as an organization. This summit is very timely to encourage all architects to discuss how each and everyone may participate in the over-all development of the country in relation to the now unpredictable and fast changing situation of our environment. It is everybody’s concern and responsibility to do their share to avert the environmental crisis as seen in most parts of the country. What was considered safe places are no longer safe and it is mainly due to the poor planning not only of government policy makers but of the private sector as well.

We, as architects and as the lead professional organization responsible for the planning and design of the built environment must take a collaborative and concerted action towards the safety of our communities particularly the most vulnerable sectors. I therefore exhort all of you to get involved and be part of the solution, be pro-active in your own communities, give it your best shot, do not be discouraged by the seemingly endless debate and argument on who should be the lead, but be a part of the unified whole towards a better and safe tomorrow for us and our children and future generations.

This summit is just one of the venues to put or collective thoughts and actions together, but ultimately, our best course of action can be done wherever we maybe whether in government, in the private sector, in business or in the academe. It is where you as the professional can make a difference. Therefore, let the game change begin.

Mabuhay ang ating bansa at Mabuhay ang Arkitektong Pilipino!

Greetings!

UAP Area B would like to welcome all delegates to the 1st-ever Architects’ Summit on Collaborative Action and Leadership (ASCAL) which will be held in Boracay.

This event’s theme, “archinature: architects in the Service of the natural environment” is, I think well-thought of, not only by aligning it to what the beautiful island of Boracay could offer but more importantly, since it is also very appropriate to our goal of providing Service-Oriented Architecture. With the green being the new black, service to our Mother Nature should be first and foremost in our design considerations and our ultimate battlecry in our fight to preserve what is left of it for the use of the next generations.

Looking through the program prepared by the Organizing Committee, I believe we are guaranteed not only to learn in this summit, but more importantly, to enjoy the beautiful beaches of the island. Be it for the talks or for the fellowship, we should all be looking forward to a fun-filled summit. We are also expecting some delegates from some chapters abroad, since some have already sent me emails from two of the U.S. chapters on their intention to attend the summit. Like us, they are also expecting to experience the most memorable UAP event of their lives.

MY FELLOW CO-WORKERS IN UAP!

On behalf of the United Architects of the Philippines, it is with extreme pleasure that I convey my sincere greetings and my best wishes to all the participants, organizers and sponsors of the ARCHITECTS’ SUMMIT ON COLLABORATIVE ACTION AND LEADERSHIP to be held on February 3-4, 2012 at La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel Station 2, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan, Philippines.

In the past architecture has been dominated by the concept of the nest, that is, an artificial dwelling intended to isolate us from the natural environment around us. But today cave architecture has evolve to encourage new habits and lifestyles that respect the natural environment, because, just as man is part of a bigger system, architecture must live in harmony with its surroundings

Truly, by taking a look around, architects can find inspiration everywhere in nature. Nature is like a catalogue of products, and all of those have benefited from years of research and development. And given that level of investment, it makes sense to carefully study and use it. Being aware of that, architects and designers are increasingly looking to nature for inspiration as many famous names have done in the past: Frank Lloyd Wright preached the beauty of vernacular materials and insisted that buildings grow naturally from their surroundings, Francisco Mañosa’s explored the use of indigenous materials infused with current technological trends to being a new dimension to design.

As contemporary buildings and architecture now face a whole myriad of problems that need solutions, it may be in nature that architects can find some answers. The quest to learn from nature in this way is what this first-ever Architects’ Summit called “Archi-Nature” focuses about, and how architecture can benefit from this kind of approach.

I firmly believe that through this Architects’ Summit, we can find a lot of solutions from nature. Nature can teach us about systems, materials, processes, structures and aesthetics. By delving more deeply into how nature solves problems, we can extract timely solutions and find new directions for our built environments. “Archi-Nature” might be the path toward our greener future.

Therefore, on behalf of the UAP National Administration, I convey my deepest gratitude to the men and women of the Architects’ Summit organizing committee who toiled hard for the success of these events, our generous suppliers and friends in the industry, and all the architect-delegates from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao who gave their time, talent and treasure in making these momentous event possible.

Greetings!

GREEN is a word that best exemplifies nature while development is to Architecture! In line with this, as the world is bitten by the urgency of saving Mother Earth from imminent global warming, we in our own little way could contribute to this pursuit for generations to come. As evident to the disasters and negative effects that plague the planet, there is never a good time to be aware of the effects man do for development with neglect to the very natural resources that would ironically protect us from these natural disasters. We as architects should step up! Everything starts with a PLAN, so simply, Let us PLAN for our PLANet!

This year, as we commune with nature at one of the best settings available in our country, the theme “Archinature” is in every way applicable for this momentous event! The most distinguished and hardworking members of our organization are to troop to beautiful island of Boracay for the SUMMIT to join the bandwagon in saving Mother Earth while moving forward to the inevitable advancement.

I personally would like to commend the ever reliable Organizing Committee of the 2012 ASCALS headed by two of my personal reliable friends in the person of Arch. Lora Rivera and Arch Roger Ong ,the rest of the committee from both Manila and Area C for the tireless engagement in strenuous hours of regular meeting and detail tweaks just to ensure a very memorable and impact driven summit, our major sponsor, particularly Jaime See who regularly supports all endeavors, the UAP secretariat for heeding on the needs of all and lastly, our beloved National President who never sleeps (literally) on his job ensuring that tweaked details are magnified so that no stones are left unturned. This summit promises a very enjoyable commune with Nature as we nurture and care for it alongside going full blast to the Information Technology age!

Warmest Greetings to all!

On February 3-4, 2012, Architects from the four areas (A-D) will be converging in Boracay Island for the first staging of the ASCAL - the Architect’s Summit for Collaborative Action and Leadership with the theme “Archinature: architects in the Service of the natural environment”. This will be at the La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel in Station 2.

This convergence of professionals is not only to impart and share with each other the knowledge, expertise, wisdom, education and idealism to empower each participant to face the new dimensional problems besetting our environment but it is also a unity gathering to celebrate a congregational fellowship of all the UAP members!

Let us savor all the offerings and amenities of the island even as we are bombarded with intellectual precepts on ecological tourism, ecosystem-based architecture and planning, natural heritage and patrimony during the staging of the summit. After all, this was meant to be an educational-recreational pursuit of personal development.

The realm of leisure as we enjoy it in its natural setting will acquiesce each delegate on the importance of keeping and sustaining our natural environment as we prod on to interject within our milieu the modern modalities in art, architecture and planning.

Let us all cherish, enjoy and partake of all the events during the summit! Let us also be vigilant in keeping the area as pristine as it should be!

Mabuhay and welcome to the Architects’ Summit for Collaborative Action in the idyllic beaches of Boracay!

Boracay is indeed a haven of natural resources that have been battling with commerce! A perfect reminder for us Architects that we have a great responsibility to defend nature and the environment. This is the best time to put our initiatives into action!

With these principles in mind, and the recent calamities in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Dumaguete and the rest of the areas in the Philippines especially Mindanao, badly hit by Sendong.

LET US PLANT TREES AND SAVE THE EXiSTING ONES

LET US CLEAR THE WATERWAYS,

LET US PRESERVE WHAT WE HAVE NOW

Greetings from ARCASIA, the Architects Regional Council Asia!

We are very happy to visit the Phillipines and to take part in a history-making gathering of the United Architects of the Philippines in the “Architects Summit on Collaborative Action and Leadership”.

The setting is perfect, the program is timely and the participants are energetic to tackle the issues. The issues centers around “Ecology”. Are we to protect our natural environment at all costs, or are we to co-exist and to use the rich but limited resources for the benefit of the people? Are we to develop the natural environment for the progress of the community? All of these issues are complex and we must collaborate with the experts and the government officials to arrive at a consensus, which will eventually map the course of a national policy.

Profession of Architect is becoming ever-more essential in this complex and challenging endeavor. We know and appreciate nature and we are the experts in creating harmonious environment, both urban and regional.

Members of ARCASIA look forward to receiving a report from the Architects’ Summit of the UAP, on the suggestions for solutions, which all member institutes and their architects can share for the dissemination of knowledge throughout our region.

Congratulations, to the launching of this important event on the beautiful island of Boracay!

UT NUI TANDANAND

Vice President Zone B

I wish to congratulate United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) for organizing this very important event, Architects’ Summit for Collaborative Action and Leadership with the theme “archinature: architects in the Service of the natural environment”.

In recent years, the world, and especially our Asia-Pacific Region have been effected by major natural disasters due to climate change caused by global warming. Developers, Planners, and Architects have contributed to this destruction and depletion of our environment as well. Inappropriate Development is one of the major factors that have harmed our sensitive eco system.

UAP has taken the initiative to raise awareness of how Architects, Planners, and Developers can sensitively design, built, and still manage to work with our environment. By highlighting issues and discussing important topics, Architects, Planners as well as Government Officials will understand the necessity of achieving this important ecological balance.

I extend my appreciation to UAP for taking the lead role to guide Design Professionals, members of Government and academe through this very important symposium. Once again congratulations and may the Architects Summit for Collaborative Action and Leadership achieve great success.

Greetings!

Congratulations to the United Architects of the Philippines, the Integrated and Accredited Professional Organization of Architects (UAP-IAPOA) and to the Accredited Professional Organization for successfully organizing this summit which will develop delegates and leaders to be at the forefront of architecture with the upcoming trends and designing with the natural environment.

This summit shall also confirm the architects’ sensitivity and concern to the social responsibility in relation to people and the environment.

The Architects Regional Council Asia’s (ARCASIA) presence and launching of the “Committee on Social Responsibility” in the Philippines shows the commitment of the Filipino architects in their efforts to make a difference in the respect of people and environment welfare.

I wish for you a productive summit and may you gain more than enough knowledge in building a future for architecture and design.

Mabuhay!

Messages

It is with great honor and privilege that I extend my sincerest gratitude to the delegates and allies of the United Architects of the Philippines as we hold our first-ever ARCHITECTS’ SUMMIT ON COLLABORATIVE ACTION AND LEADERSHIP (dubbed as Architects’ Summit) to be held on February 3-4, 2012 at La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel Station 2, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan, Philippines.

The natural environment still manages to fill us with a sense of awe and amazement. Despite the amount of scientific knowledge mankind has gathered, nature still holds great mysteries that we may never be able to unravel. This complexity has continually daunted man. In frustration, we try to control nature by enforcing order. As a result, we have distanced ourselves from the earth, even though our survival is completely dependent on it. We are now trying to regain our close connection to nature.

Hence, it is fitting and proper that this Architects’ Summit is called to highlight the important role that architects play in creating living environments that co-habitat and promote healthy natural environments and create sustainable living environments that enhance our lives with good Earth relationship. Further, this summit will allow architects to experience first-hand a chosen place in order to understand the needs of that place, draft solutions to those problems and needs, and forge collaborations with other professionals in order to bring about the right solutions.

May this Architects’ Summit, therefore, impart the desired skills and competency as we look forward to more shining moments for Filipino architects. With the concerted efforts of the organizing committee, we can confidently meet the purpose of this summit with dedicated, competent, ethical and environmentally-responsible professional architects.

Mabuhay tayong lahat!

My warmest greetings to all the delegates of the United Architects of the Philippines!

This year, we are holding the first regional summit entitled “Architects’ Summit on Collaborative Action and Leadership.” (ASCAL) The venue is in Boracay Island located on the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. A summit being held in the middle of white beaches is a welcoming change of scenery for a once a year convergence of all Uap Area assemblies.

Our theme for this summit “archinature: architects in the Service of the natural environment” is indeed very timely and appropriate. As our natural environment still manages to fill us with a sense of awe and amazement, we architects despite the amount of information and knowledge we have, may never be able to resolve the immense mysteries nature still holds. It will be all our collaborative actions that would make a difference to all of us, to nature and to you.

Two days of this summit will give the participants the opportunity to connect with the ideas, the education and the people they need to be part of government’s efforts in regaining close connection with nature. It will be our chance to meet our colleagues and learn from the seminar sessions that feature topics from the three sub themes: Architects for Ecological Tourism, Ecosystems-based Architecture and Planning and Architects in the conservation of Natural Heritage and Patrimony. The summit is also packed with cultural night events, outdoor sports events and island tours, providing the delegates a time to relax and have fun experiencing the island’s culture and beaches. This will culminate and conclude with a fellowship night which shall show case one of best nightlife entertainment in the island. To coincide with the summit, Uap is also hosting the Architects Regional Council for Asia (Arcasia) Office Bearer’s Meeting from which fifteen representatives from different countries would be attending.

With the full support, cooperation and hard work extended by the members of the ASCAL Organizing Committee (from Manila and District C4), the Uap Secretariat and our ever hard working National President, we can only expect this summit to be another memorable and unforgettable event.

In behalf of the Organizing Committee, I welcome all delegates to this UAP summit.

Greetings!!

As District Director of UAP District C4, Panay Island (Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Aklan, Marikudo and Hamili Chapters ), we warmly welcome all delegates, guests, and our dear sponsors, as we humbly accept all the tasks and challenges in hosting this first ever Architect’s Summit for Collaborative Action and Leadership, to be held in our region, specifically in the world renowned island of Boracay, Malay, Aklan.

The holding of this Architect’s Summit will be a nationwide convergence of four Areas A, B, C and D, hence, we pray that all our experiences, resolutions and agreements shall be our tools in realizing a doable model that will showcase a contagious action worthy of the emulations of other professionals, local leaders and advocates of environment, not only within this island but also worldwide.

As we continue to strongly maintain the legacies of our founders, and happily blending our advocacies with an environment overrun by the demands of time, we the real architects, shall jointly transform this habitat into a beautiful island to live, work, play and learn.

Ang sigaw ng buong UAP, sa Boracay tayo mag Hapi-hapi!!

Tourism and understanding nature: Towards an ecosystem-based architecture and planning

Abstract: Tourism offers opportunities not only for economic growth, but also a chance to sustainably utilize the natural resources. However, there are environmental dynamics that should be appreciated by the stakeholders of tourism in order to ensure the natural resources (that form the base of the tourism products) and protect the investments.

By understanding what nature can do to get back at the wrong development of natural sites, we can design sites and facilities that will not only ensure commercial success over an ideal period, but also create an environment that becomes ideal for the natural processes to continue without putting human development in danger.
