Learning can take place in many different environments. Certain learning environments, or archetypes, have always existed.

The Apple Education Leadership Summits, alongside Dave D. Thornburg, author of Campfires in Cyberspace, have identified a group of learning spaces that students or learners can use to ensure that their educational goals are achieved. The idea is that a student’s experience throughout the day can be defined by his/her use of space.

These archetypes range from private, personal learning to public, collaborative learning spaces. In Thornburg’s book, he identifies the following archetypes:

Cave | Campfire | Watering Hole | Laboratory | Mountain Top

DLR Group has adapted the above archetypes to fit the business community. It is our belief that business and academia have a place together in education so these spaces create an interface to achieve that. Therefore, the following are essential for student learning and collaboration:

Vault | Huddle | Great Hall | Exchange | Podium

A small, quiet space used to focus and internalize our knowledge.Place where ideas take shape and visions are realized.

Vaults may take on several forms ranging from a seat at a table in a library to a small conference room or office.

EAn informational space centered around listening to a teacher. A place to congregate and hear from experts. As Robert Frost said, “We sit in the circle and suppose, while the truth sits in the center and knows.”

These spaces can take on several different scales, ranging from a large lecture hall down to an intimate classroom setting.

Podiums support the culmination of everything students gathered from the other four spaces - interaction from Huddle and Great Hall spaces, and all the information that was processed in the Vault and Exchange spaces.
