PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE
1st Sunday of Lent, Year C, March 10, 2019
Lent is time of Mercy
We have already begun our Lenten journey. During the 40 days, the church invites her children to embrace the three Cardinal works of spiritual life: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that involves abstinence from food and/or drink which helps to make the bodily appetites subject and not master of the individual. We hear people say that they will give up something during Lent. Some give up chocolate, TV shows, computer games, drinking, etc. These are great but not enough. The purpose of our fasting must be to be free to serve God more. Thus, fasting must lead us to repentance and renewal of spirit so as to run away from sin and do good. Fasting is complemented by the other two pillars of Lent which are prayer and almsgiving.
Jesus was tested in today’s gospel. He had just ended forty days of fasting and he was hungry. He needed food but not at all cost. For Jesus, one does not live to eat but one eats to live and the best food that gives life is the word of God. Jesus recognized the tricks of the devil who makes unwholesome things appear good from the outside. He did not allow the attractions and pleasures of the world to distract him from obedience to His Father. He did not fall into the temptation of abusing the power he has. Unlike the old Israel, Jesus was very committed and faithful to God even when he was tempted. As followers of Christ, we will also be tested and tempted. Let us follow the example of the Master in using the Word of God to our advantage. The Christian who dwells on the word of God and meditate on it will conquer the devil just as Jesus did.
Lent is a time to cultivate the mercy of God and communicate with the God of love. That is what we do when we pray. In prayer, we communicate with the God of love. Perhaps we will be drawn more to reading the Bible, praying the rosary, participating in the Stations of the Cross and attending Mass more frequently this Lent. Our fasting and prayer also lead to sharing with others what we have and particularly assist the weak and the poor. That is why almsgiving is the third pillar of Lent. Our practice of generosity could be tested at times. We cannot possibly assist everyone who comes to us for help. But that should not be an excuse, not the help. There are times we wonder if the one asking for help is genuine. I invite you to the following program this Lent to boost your spiritual life:
Bible Study for Lent: During Sundays of Lent (9:00am-10:30am) and Mondays (9:30am-11am) there will be a bible study for Lent from Edward Sri and Friends “No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion.”Stations of the Cross – Every Friday of Lent in the church at 6pm in Spanish and at 7pm in English.Fish Fry – Every Friday of Lent from 5pm our Knights will be selling their traditional fish fry.Penance Service – Our Lenten penance service in conjunction with St. Martha and St. John of the Cross will be held on Thurs-day, March 28th at our church from 6:30pm to 9pm. There will be about 15 priests to hear confessions in English and Spanish.Parish Mission – We will hold our 3-day parish missions from Monday, April 1 to Wednesday, April 3 in the church at 7pm daily. Fr. Bob Weiss, a Passionist priest stationed in Louisville, KY will be conducting the mission. Fr. Bob conducted our parish mission in 2017 and we are glad to welcome him back to our parish.
Archdiocesan-wide Evening Prayer “The Way of the Cross”: On Friday, March 15, Cardinal DiNardo has asked all parishes to hold a special evening of prayer entitled "The Way of the Cross: An Evening of Prayer for Healing and Purification of the Church." Cardinal DiNardo desires to be united in prayer with all priests and the faithful of the Archdiocese that evening. He will lead the Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m. in the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, and all pastors are asked to do the same in their respective parishes in unison so that the entire Archdiocese might be one in prayer. The public witness of the Church at prayer is powerful. It serves to unite us more closely with the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ, and it enables the Church to begin rep-aration for the sins of its ministers against God's most vulnerable ones. I will lead this special Way of the Cross in our parish at 7:00pm on Friday, March 15, please join me and pray for the healing of the church.
Pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Greece: Join me on an inspiring and holy pilgrimage following the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ, and St. Paul the great Apostle from October 31 – November 12, 2019. The first part will take us to Holy Land, places where Jesus was born, lived, preached, died, and resurrected – Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, Jordan, Jerusalem and many more. The second half will take us on cruise through the Greek Islands where St. Paul visited including Corinth, Ephesus, Crete, Pat-mos, and more. I look forward to you joining me on this pilgrimage. Brochures with information are available in the narthex after Mass or in the parish office during the week.

We return on Tuesday, March 19 to continue with Big Idea Four. How are we called to become missionary disciples of Christ? The topic is The Church’s Call. Hearing the Word of God at Mass should lead us to live as Jesus’ disciples. When Jesus commanded His disciples to go out to all the world and spread The Good News, He meant for His Church to continue to grow until He comes again. This is very exciting! We are all called to share the Word of God.
Breaking Open the Word for Families for The First Sunday of Lent By Ginger Herrington
Reading 1: Deuteronomy 26:4-10 We cried to the Lord and He heard our cry. Call upon the Lord when you are oppressed or needy, emotionally, financially, or spiritually. He delivers us from all evil, for which we pray in the Lord’s Prayer – it is both a request and an affirmation. We believe that God hears us, loves us, and helps us – not always in the way we anticipate or prefer. See the Lord’s Hand in your life and gratefully acknowledge His saving mercy. He had given us every good gift and He is pleased when we use those gifts to help others or to bring glory to God. Our Big Idea 4 topics address responding to God’s Call. The Lord will reward each of us according to our deeds. Bring your best to the Lord and bow down in His Presence.
Reading 2: From the First Letter of Paul to the Romans 10:8-13 The Word is near you – in your mouth and in your heart. Everyone who calls upon the Lord will be saved. This is not as simple as it sounds. You must believe in your heart that Jesus is our Savior and act in conformity with your faith. Those who call upon the name of the Lord act as He does: with love. Practice the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy; come to Mass; frequent the sacraments; read the Word of God; and pray daily. When God looks at you, He will see His Image, and when you call upon Him, He will respond speedily. No one who believes in Him shall be put to shame, for we shall be like Him.
Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, was led into the desert. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is an ecstatic, enlighten-ing experience – and then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert, a difficult, desolate place. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta lived this reality, the feeling of barrenness, deprivation, and distance from God, even though she clearly was filled with the Holy Spirit. No one could love as mercifully and absolutely as she did without being immersed in God’s Spirit. Let us conform our inner selves to the image of our Maker: let us love. Trust in Him even when you’re not having that mountaintop experience; trust Him when you are in the desert, beset by temptation. Every time we choose to love, we choose to be like our Father. Worship the Lord and serve Him alone.
Lent has begun! Hopefully you’ve been working on building up a virtue and abstaining from a vice. You are invited to come to the Stations of the Cross in the church every Friday in Lent: 6 PM in Spanish or 7 PM in English. All Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence: eat no meat or other indulgent foods on Fridays from March 6 through April 20, 2019. Catholics over the age of 14 are obliged to abstinence (eating no meat or other indulgent foods). Scan this QR code with your smartphone. Archdiocesan wide Evening Prayer “The Way of the Cross”
On Friday, March 15, Cardinal DiNardo has asked all parishes to hold a special evening of prayer enti-tled "The Way of the Cross: An Evening of Prayer for Healing and Purification of the Church." Cardinal DiNardo desires to be united in prayer with all priests and the faithful of the Archdiocese that evening. It serves to unite us more closely with the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ, and it enables the Church to begin reparation for the sins of its minis-ters against God's most vulnerable ones.
Join us for this special Lenten prayer at 7:00pm in St. MM church as we pray for our church in need of healing.

MENSAJE DEL PÁRROCO
Page 13 | March 10, 2019
