The footprints began with Sr Dympna Kinsella OP and her pio- neers from Ireland stepping ashore in Cape Town on 7 September 1863. They were answering two calls – a call to mission as educators from Bishop Thomas Grimley, and the Dominican call to preach the good news of Jesus Christ of compassion, forgiveness and joy. The sisters answered the calls in a spirit that can be characterised as creative and holistic, sagacious and courageous, in turn enriching the lives of all they touched in the classroom and in community, planting the seeds of learning, values and principles for life, supported by the Catholic ethos for scaffolding and nurtured by the embrace of Gospel life. Their partnership with the local church was prodigious. Together they were seen as a community rowing the same boat together as they pushed out into the deep, from education to social justice. During the turmoil of the late 1980s and early 1990s, mark- ing the death throes of apartheid, the unwritten mobilising mantra of struggle solidarity seemed to be: “We all are in it together.” The Cabra footprint can be found in the schools and convents they estab- lished from the centre of the old city to neighbouring suburbs, begin- ning with St Mary’s Convent and St Mary’s School in 1863. Primary schools and high schools were built that more or less followed the railway line, the curve of the mountains and the shoreline from Woodstock and Rondebosch through Wynberg and St James to Simon’s Town. They moved in new directions to Matroosfontein, Stellenbosch and Nyanga, which became a site of township struggle. They went where they were called to serve a need. The Cabra journey ran on through the years to become an integral part of some watershed moments in the histo- ry of South Africa that required cour- age in the classroom and courage in the streets. We teach children,” the sisters pro- claimed. Sr Margaret Kelly OP, a former Southern African Region vicar and secretary to Justice and Peace at the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference, recalls 1976 when the sis- ters, supported by the bishops, stood up against the system and breached the seemingly impenetrable walls of apartheid. “For well over 100 years from their arrival in Cape Town the Cabra Dominican sisters were held in high regard as model citizens, polite ladies and professional leaders in education in all sectors of society,” Sr Margaret notes. “In the 1970s and 1980s this image was challenged as they actively opposed apartheid. In 1976 Springfield Convent quietly accepted a few coloured pupils who had applied for admission to the school. When the sky did not fall in many more black and coloured students were accepted into Springfield and all the other Dominican and Catholic schools throughout South Africa in January 1977. The press had a field day. “It took great courage to withstand the threats of closure issued by the government. At the level of leader- ship, Sr Marian O’Sullivan OP was part of the team from the SACBC that negotiated with the government for many years before the matter was resolved. At the local level Springfield and other Catholic schools worked to help the students adapt to the new situation and to ensure that they could take part in all events: in exami- nations, sports and all inter-schools events normally reserved for whites.” The Springfield experience can be described as a defining moment when the practice of “whites only”, a cor- nerstone of racial prejudice, was being destroyed to make way for a just and democratic South Africa in 1994 The Cabras are also remembered for their contribution to a special ministry in education, serving as empowering messengers of the Gospel call for eph- phetha – touching ears and mouths that are closed, that they may be opened to hear and proclaim the word of God. The sisters have worked their own miracles in speech and hearing at The Grimley in Hout Bay and St Dominic’s at Wynberg. In more recent years Cabra foot- prints have moved on beyond the classroom to respond to the needs of the times – to be a supportive presence in community life. They can be found in a diversity of pastoral ministries: in prayer and contemplation, retreats and spiritual direction; in ministries of care; in ongoing justice and peace work; in sensitising communities to the integrity of creation. The Cabra footprints also carry with them that enduring and indomi- table Dominican spirit which has contributed greatly to transforming the hearts and minds of generations of people, especially the young, at the foot of Africa, under the Southern Cross. To all the Cabra sisters, living and gone, for what you have done and are doing in the vineyard, for cultivating a crop of green and gold, thank you, thank you, and again thank you.

HEART

Thank you for a fine quarterly paper! It is so good to hear of various events in the archdiocese and to have a meaningful story as well. The report on the Archbishop's Building Fund (from your printed list of parishes) must be very disappointing to the archbishop; the response appears to be so weak. One must question that necessary bond of brotherly love and unity in the Church, and this must necessarily affect people like myself.

But my chief concern is the abuse of the Holy Eucharist, as is so often ref lected in letters I read in the Southern Cross. I myself, besides many others I am sure, have experi-enced some very disturbing episodes

hey everyone! I cannot believe that I am writing an

update for the archdiocesan News agaIN! It really does seem like the other day that we were all together at the Cathedral for the Youth Day Mass, and September and October seemed so very far away.

Now the Youth Leadership Weekend is a distant memory and Youth Ministry Day is also behind us!

The Youth Leadership Weekend was a great suc-cess. There were a total of 36 people on the course from 10 different parishes (top, right).

The course was held at the Hawequas Scout Ranch just outside Wellington. The scenery and situa-tion were beautiful – but the lack of hot water for most of the weekend was not quite so beautiful!

The weekend was jam-packed with activities ranging from the talks on leadership theory (right)…

Youth ministry day (pics below) was also a great success, hosted as usual by Lansdowne parish, with 28 parishes represented. Mass was celebrated by the archbishop, which was followed by a light lunch. after lunch there were activities and workshops for the liturgical dancers, altar server co-ordinators and youth leaders, as well as some games for the younger ones.

Youth Chaplaincy

We are also very excited to once again be hosting a youth ministry con-ference in Cape Town in February, with international speakers from Life Teen in the USA. Registration is now open at www.sacyltc.yolasite.com/ and I encourage every parish to try and send at least one representative to this training conference

of people using their hands in receiv-ing the sacred host. I feel the laity have not been formally instructed as to the why and the how! I heard a visiting priest remind the people that it was never a dogmatic teaching from the Vatican that everybody was to use their hands in future! I also believed, then, that it was an instruction. Now I know better.

There is little doubt that this prac-tice, now widespread, is open to a great deal of abuse. I have witnessed people take the host to their benches. I have seen a number of people actu-ally lick the host from their hands; I have seen youth chewing gum and smilingly approach the Sacrament. Another hurtful reaction is with the crowds moving up to the altar one by one, the lack of reverence; there is no

sense of adoration, of divine presence, of a worshipping community. I may be wrong, I may be seeing what really is not there, but it is surely a matter for the Holy Father and for our bishops.

E.Y. Roussouw

The end of the Year of Faith is almost upon us. I have been impressed with the way in which so many of our

parishes embraced Pope-emeritus Benedict's call for this year of re-vitalization and renewal of our faith. The par-ticipation in diocesan events and in pilgrimages organised by parishes has been hearten-ing and we now anticipate the Feast of Christ the King when we will celebrate the the clos-ing of the Year of Faith at the archdiocesan Mass. Of course we will all continue to nurture and develop this great gift of faith that has been given to us.

We can do that especially by having a sense of diakonia, that is, service. as followers of Christ we are called to humble service of our neighbour, to serve the poor and afflicted. This is the strong message of the Scriptures and one which Pope Francis is emphasising in his papacy.

In the archdiocese we are dedicating the coming year as the Year of the Deacon. This is to commemorate the restora-tion of the permanent diaconate by the Second Vatican Council fifty years ago. as we celebrate the permanent diaconate – and give thanks for the permanent deacons of our own archdio-cese who have and continue to serve god's people in Word and Sacrament – we accept the challenge of the gospel and of which Pope Francis reminds us,

to become better servants and express our faith in service of the poor.

There are many ways in which we can do that and many organisations that we can join or assist to achieve that end. We can always make financial contributions or donations in kind to Catholic organisations such as CWD (and to support the buckets of love campaign), to St Vincent de Paul, the pris-on ministry or the apostleship of the Sea to name a few. There are many other organisations that do excellent and essential work. But it is not just about money or donations: in fact, that can be the easy way. We should also look at how we can participate, how we can sacrifice some of our time and use the talents we have. our service must be in solidarity with those we serve and not done in a condescending way as a superior to an inferior, simply because we are giving service as Christians, as brothers and sisters in the family of god.

We thank our deacons for the witness they continue to give to us. The reason for the establishment of these helpers of the apostles was to care for the widows of the hellenist Christians (Act 6:1-7). They continue to give love and care for so many parishioners. Let us focus in a special way this coming year in praying for and saying thank you to our dea-cons.

ARCHDIOCESAN NEWSOctober-December 2013 3

Alfredo van der SchyffMy name is Alfredo van der Schyff and I was born on 28 March 1987. I am from a place called Seawinds in Cape Town and belong to the parish of St Anne’s, Steenberg. I am from a family of four, having two elder brothers and a younger sister.

My call to the priesthood is somewhat strange, but at the same time fascinating. The nurturing of my faith and the begin-nings of my “call” started with my parents when I was still small. My parents made sure that we attended Sunday Mass every week. As a young boy, Holy Mass made absolutely no sense to me, it bored me half to death, and the priest constantly waffled on and on about things I did not know or understand.

however, as time and the years pro-gressed and as I grew in reason and stat-ure, this man known as “Father” and “the priest” began to fascinate me. everything he did was weird but welcoming, all at the same time. he lived alone, had no wife and children, and constantly wore black clothes. He wasn’t very rich and he didn’t have any qualities that made him shine in any specific way. Yet at the same time people were drawn to him – they were compelled by some urge to constantly speak to him, to tell him their darkest secrets, and share their greatest hopes and joys. He was there when their chil-dren were born, when they received the eucharist for the first time, and when the bishop sealed them with the Holy Spirit; he was there when they gave themselves to each other in marriage; and he was there when they died and went home to their heavenly Father.

At the age of 16, this man sparked something in me I never thought would have surfaced, not because of who he was, but because of how and for whom he lived. he lived in word and deed that which he served, namely he was Christ Jesus to his people. When I saw him I saw the Christ that was in the gospels, the one who loved the poor, forgave sinners, healed the sick and raised the dead.

This for me as a rebellious teen was strange, because I had many ideas of what I wanted to be: from a pastry chef, to a doctor, to a microbiologist. But as I prayed and spoke to my parish priest, it became increasingly clear that the priesthood was in fact where god was calling me to.

I eventually made the announcement to my mother. She just looked at me and laughed, and said “You, a priest?!” I understood her reaction because I wasn’t exactly a very well-behaved son. I was naughty and stubborn, just for starters. As time progressed she realized I was

Mathekodwa MqombotiMy name is Mathekodwa Christian Mqomboti. I was born in the eastern Cape in a small town called Tsomo, being the fourth of five children. at the age of ten we moved to Cape Town to live with our mother who was working in Cape Town at that time. I went to Mzamomtsha Primary School in Driftsand, Mfuleni and completed my schooling at Langa high School. I was born a Methodist, following my father’s religion, and when I came to Cape Town my mother invited me to join her for Mass. From that moment on I fell in love with the Church, especially the priesthood and the eucharist. For me, this is when my vocation to the priesthood began. I did not understand fully what it meant but I knew deep in my heart that god was calling me to this, and I wanted it too. I then told my mother that I wanted to be a Catholic priest, and so my journey began.

People who have played a pivotal role in my life are my mother, Thandeka Ntsume Mqomboti; my first parish priest, Fr Desmond Curran who helped me to discover my vocation more fully, and who was my inspiration; my catechism teachers, who introduced me to the faith; and Archbishop Lawrence Henry, who believed in me and accepted me to study for priesthood for the archdiocese of Cape Town. I began my studies at St Francis Xavier Diocesan Seminary in 2009 at the age of 19, and continued at St John Vianney National Seminary.

Most of all it was God who called me to this life, and each and every minute of my life he gives me the grace to continue. I thank god for all my life experiences, and believe in my heart of hearts that the same god who has begun this work in me will bring it to completion. Being in the seminary, of course, does not guarantee the gift of priesthood or ordination. Being

Shaun Addinallattending a holy Cross convent school in my primary school years provided me with a good introduction to learning the Catholic way of life by regular prayer and Mass attendance. The sisters were wonderful teachers. We had a weekly school Mass on a Tuesday morning and one of my first memories was clearly remembering the priest (the late Fr Michael Ward) raising his hands in prayer – and I thought to myself – I also want to do that.

While still in the convent school, my father, being in the air Force, was transferred to Potchefstroom where I did the majority of my schooling. The idea of possibly wanting to become a priest popped its head up again when I was in Standard 9 (grade 11). But at the same time, I had also started play-ing and doing well at bowls as well as being informed that my parents were moving back to Cape Town. There was too much going on for me to give this anymore thought.

after matric, I was conscripted to do two years of National Service in the South African Medical Services. Towards the end of my National Service, during the latter part of 1989, I applied for a position at Old Mutual and ended up working 16 years for them, in the Financial Asset Management division. During my time at Old Mutual, I was fortunate enough to be given a bursary to study Business administration and Industrial Psychology, which I completed in 1993. But I was still searching as to what god wanted me to do. There was still a sense of uneasiness in my life.

In 2004, I decided to take part in a discernment programme offered by the archdiocese of Cape Town. It is at least a one-year programme where like-minded men meet every second Saturday morning to talk about various issues and concepts in the church, how it affects them, their spiritual life and whether there is a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. I plucked up the courage to apply to enter the seminary and was accepted to start in 2005. However, at the same time, I was offered a wonderful position as a Training & Development manager for an international financial institution, which meant that I would be given opportuni-ties to travel internationally to attend and teach programmes. I had indeed hit a crossroads in my life. after considerable prayer, I made an appointment to see archbishop henry to discuss the matter with him. he was so understanding and wise. I will never forget his words to me, “Shaun, there is no race to become a priest. Take the job opportunity and, if you have a true calling, you will be back in my office.”

So, I accepted the corporate offer and enjoyed the travelling. I also realised just how much I enjoyed being with people, and in particular, teaching and guiding them in their development.

In 1996, I received my SA Protea colours for bowls and represented South Africa at various international championships and tournaments until 2010, where I was blessed and fortunate to have won a gold medal for South

Theo AprilMy name is Theo Angelo April, the second of four children, and I grew up in Elsie's River. I am on my journey towards the priesthood, presently stud-ying philosophy for the archdiocese of Cape Town.

My own vocation story helps me to reflect deeply on what I consider to be a call from the Lord. To answer the Lord's call brings with it many chal-lenges, and one is never comfortable with answering the Lord or accepting the offer that god puts before you.

answering a call to follow Jesus and accepting him as the only love of your life comes with many challenges indeed. I remember when I realised that I want-ed to become a priest it came as a big surprise, because of the unworthiness one feels to move to a supernatural life, here and now.

a call to the priesthood is not easy. It should not be understood as a career, but as a call from the master of the vineyard himself, Jesus Christ.

Before starting seminary formation I had a stable career in the corpo-rate world, so financially I felt secure. however, since leaving school there had been an ongoing yearning to discover what it is that I wanted out of life. even though I had a career and many friends, and experienced comfort and security, nothing was, and still is, more securing than to be with the Lord.

These are four of our six seminarians. We thank God that they have responded generously to the Lord's call to labour in his vineyard.

Our Vocation Stories

serious, and encouraged me to follow my heart if this is what I believed and where I hoped to find true happiness.

I thus joined the discernment pro-gramme with Fr John Bartmann, then vocations director of the archdiocese of Cape Town, together with a group of other eager young men. he took us through a process of understanding who the priest was and where the call comes from, and what will be expected of us as future priests. he encouraged us, but made us aware of the many difficul-ties and realities the priest faces in the modern world.

I applied and was accepted to study for the priesthood by archbishop Lawrence henry, who to this day encourages me to persevere in my goal. he reminds me constantly that there will be difficulties in life and on the journey towards the priesthood, but that I should bear in mind he whom I am following – Christ Jesus who suffered for me – and that I should know that there will always be a good Friday before the joy and glory of Easter.

at present I have been in formation and training towards the priesthood for six years of a nine year programme. I have completed four years of philosophy and at present I am in second year theology. With God’s grace and help I am still jour-neying towards the goal of the priesthood of Jesus Christ.

in the seminary is a journey of self discov-ery and also a discerning of God’s will for one’s life. Pray for me as I also promise to pray for you in this great journey of life, as we move closer to our ultimate end which is the eternal bliss with our heavenly Father.

This experience of life has prompted me many times to ask the question,”What is the purpose of me being here (studying for the priest-hood)?” The answer to this has come in a three-fold way, i.e., the scriptures; the preaching of priests who have indeed been, and still are, remarkable role models; and the people of God – my own community from where I was called – in elsie's river.

however, it was not easy to answer god's call or to accept the invitation that the Lord offered me – it took me ten years to answer the Lord on his invitation. But the call of Jesus towards me was not a once-off call, but an ongo-ing one. The older I become, the more this becomes a reality.

Taking up the Lord’s invitation brings with it many challenges, some of which can shake you to the core of your being. I mention just a few. The first is that when you enter the seminary you live with other men who are journeying this road with you. You learn to build a sense of fraternity with them as all of you are journeying to something common – the priesthood. But even this can bring challenges because of our different backgrounds. academics, too, is highly demanding and this has made me to look at all my parish priests with much respect and admiration, and indeed urges me on to continue on this journey.

Lastly, to any young man who is thinking about the priesthood, I wish to encourage you not to be afraid. Instead, take up the Lord on his offer on your life and think of the people who are thirsty for the Lord. It is through them that you will hear those profound words of the Lord, “I thirst." (John 19:28). Be inspired, listen to the inner promptings of the Holy Spirit, and let God guide you on your journey in life.

The vocation stories of our other two seminarians will be featured in forthcoming editions of the Archdiocesan News

africa at the Commonwealth games, held in Delhi, India.

having ticked that goal off, I did some more introspection as to “where to now?” Although I enjoyed many parts of the corporate life, it just never seemed totally right for me. I always believed I was called to do something else, something more.

So in 2011, I participated once again in the archdiocesan discernment pro-gramme, which also incorporated spending 40 hours of community service in St Joseph’s Home for sick and disabled children in Montana. What a humbling experience that proved to be!

Later that year, I applied yet again to enter the seminary and was accepted. after a great deal of prayer and discern-ment, I left my job in the corporate world and entered St Francis Xavier Seminary in Athlone in February 2012.

although painfully challenging at times, the seminary was important for me in discovering more about myself, about my Church and about my relationship with god. It also allowed me to experi-ence different cultures and, thereby, to enjoy the vitality of the Church in South Africa. My formators proved to be great people of faith, understanding and wisdom.

I recently completed my six-month pastoral assignment in the parish of atlantis. although many of the pastoral experiences remain challenging, they are often drowned in the joy and hon-our to serve God’s people. I believe that this is all needed as part of my formation and to provide me with the right skills, knowledge and attitude to be a good priest. Many of the experiences that I currently face have helped me discern even more the Lord’s call to priesthood. This, of course, is through no achieve-ment or holiness of my own but rather through the Lord’s gift of vocation to the priesthood.

I left for Rome in September 2013 to embark on four years of theology stud-ies at the Pontifical Beda College.

Please pray for me.

Theology Today

Mgr Andrew Borello

I want to continue reflecting on what it means to live our lives fully. In our understanding as believers, it means living our lives in Jesus and on his terms – living a life that is moral, a life of prayer and the worship of god, a life of love and service of all and a life which gives witness to the person of Jesus present and acting in our lives. In this way, our life and our living is an authentic response to who Jesus is and all that he has done for us – a life guided by the Spirit into the truth that sets us free to be fully alive.

When we look at the world in which we live, it is very easy see why we are in such a mess and what is wrong with the world. essentially we have lost our sense of god and the need to live lives that are a real response to who god is. In large measure we have come to believe that we do not need god and we can do it on our own. Prayer and worship are no longer needed, love and service of others are determined by whether there is any benefit to ourselves – after all we are now the centre of our universe – and morality is guided by what others do and how they behave. Such reality is nothing more than situation ethics. There is an intrinsic sense of doing the right thing, but who determines what that is? There is no longer an objective morality, but that which individuals determine as right for them.

even if we acknowledge that there is a god and want to have some connection to him, we want God to fit in with our lives and agendas. This leaves us with a very confused religious identity where morality becomes arbitrary, sometimes determined by god, but as easily by ourselves. Instead of having a common religious

identity, there emerges a plethora of identities, witnessed both in the vast numbers of churches and in the many individual “religious” persons with no affiliation to any religious body. This produces religious anarchy and chaos.

once again, we as members of the Church, need to take a hard look at ourselves and our lives and to question whether we are living an authentic life in Christ and according to the teachings of the Church, or if we have allowed ourselves to compromise all of this by placing ourselves above Christ and the Church. I believe that very few of us are authentically living our religion, which means that we are not really living our lives to the full. In order for us to look at ourselves, the issues that I have raised should help us to face ourselves (if we are honest and want to do this) – morality, prayer and worship, love and service of others and effective witness. another way of facing ourselves would be to ask ourselves: “who is Jesus Christ and who are we as his body, the Church?”

I believe that such honest self examination is essential to our Christian wellbeing, for it allows for a continuing repentance and conversion into Jesus Christ, with an emerging life as individual believers and Church that is authentic, because it is increasingly about Jesus and less and less about ourselves and our confused ideas. This comes to be a life driven by the Spirit who leads us into the truth, who is the way to life and life in its fullness in Jesus, who is Lord and Saviour. There is little room for complacency or a Christianity of comfort and personal happiness – this is not the fullness of life or life lived to the full.

St Luke’s, Factreton is alive, kicking and dancing under the spiritual guid-ance of Fr David Anderson.

On 12 July 2013 St Luke’s hosted a “Black and White” Dance with a cheese and wine in the Kensington Civic Centre. The dance was a roaring success, well supported, and many thanks go to the dedicated hard work of the entire fundraising team and parishioners who sold tickets. The dance was such a success that tickets were in demand and patrons who had enjoyed it wanted to purchase tickets for the 2014 dance, which will be hosted again in June/July 2014 – watch this space!

The next big fundraiser is a bus trip to Hawston Fish Festival. Tickets are R150 per person. Contact Cliffie Harris or Helen Willenberg.

The Ecclesia Team of St Luke’s (we have nine groups of between nine and 14 participants per group) hosted their launch for the “Season of Faith” with Sign Up Sunday at the 9am Mass on 1 September 2013. The praise and worship band from Ss John & Paul, Belhar once again offered their services in lifting our spiritual singing, with St Luke’s liturgical dancers bringing the Word to life with their dance.

Two of our Ecclesia youth, Travis Cornelius and a new convert Eliza Van der Westhuizen, shared how Ecclesia has strengthened their faith and how proud they were to be Catholic. They encouraged parishioners who had not joined to sign up. To give parishion-ers a foretaste of the new series, we played the Introduction of the DVD by Monsignor Barney McAleer.

The Ecclesia team then let off 300

St Luke's alive, kicking, and dancing

balloons in the church as part of their evangelisation campaign.

As Ecclesia co-ordinator, I explained that the balloon was a representation of ourselves:

The air inside the balloon repre-sented God’s breath of life in us; each balloon had a special scripture mes-sage inside (the Spirit living in us) and on the outside it read “Jesus loves You” (this is how we should be showing God’s love on the outside and sharing it with others); the balloon also repre-sented a gift (which each parishioner received). In order to receive that gift we had to pop the balloon (in the same way God gives each and every one of us special gifts which we need to discover, and use them for the glory of God). The balloons' movement in the air represented how we could be sharing our faith stories and good news with someone

Parishioners were then handed a laminated copy of the Creed after Mass and were encouraged to say it every day as a prayer and to learn it by heart. All parishioners were then invited to share a cup of coffee and to support our Youth Ecclesia who had their turn in making and selling Bacon and Egg Rolls as part of our church’s monthly fundraising.

For the next six weeks of the “Season of Faith” series the Ecclesia team decided that they would ask parishioners to bring along and share the following with the needy in their parish and be doers of the Word: Week 1 – fresh vegetables and fruit for the first day of Spring; Week 2 – any tinned foods; Week 3 – sugar,

rice, packets of soup; Week 4 – pasta, f lour, cereals; Week 5 – jam, peanut butter, fish paste, etc.; Week 6 – tea, coffee, etc. Parishioners responded generously to this call!

Since the inception of the Ecclesia program in our parish, there is more socializing after Mass, the nameless parishioner who used to run off as soon as Father gave the final blessing now has a name, and stays behind to hug and ask you how you are and how God is working in your life. A big thank you to all the facilitators who are so dedicated to the program, and to Fr David and Deacon White for their encouragement and spir-itual guidance. A special thank you to the Pastoral Development Team for developing this series for all of us – we pray that more parishioners will come on board to experience and discuss our faith, and have that deeper relationship with Jesus, and be filled with God's love and joy.

ARCHDIOCESAN NEWSOctober-December 2013 7

A short story by Fr Ralph de Hahn

kindly return all copies – unsold or the cash – to the Chancery, CT as soon as possible. There is no third edition. Sincere thanks to all our helpers. Fr R.

amira was born in an obscure village on the plains between the cities of ramla and ashdod, not too far from Bethlehem; to the east lay the Dead Sea, to the north-east flowed the Jordan. Born of very poor parents it was always her burning desire to visit David’s city. She had learned that it was there that Jacob had buried Rachel; and it was there that Ruth had lived when she married Boaz. But, above all, it was the city of her hero King David.

When both her parents died within one month amira made the decision to move with her new-born baby to Bethlehem. her little girl was named Beula, and the mother was hoping to find a reliable physician in the great city since the roman registration was on the go. The highways were busy with slow-moving traffic and merchants of every shape and size.

Interestingly, word was circulat-ing that strange travellers known as star-gazers or foreign astrologers had visited King herod in search of some kind of king. everyone knew that the cruel herod was the king of the Jews, yet nasty rumours and speculations buzzed all round the region.

amira felt the urge to visit this high-ly-honoured city, more so because her baby most definitely needed medical attention. But then came some shattering news from passing merchants: King herod was fiercely enraged and ordered the massacre of all babies two years and under – for what reason nobody knew, only the king himself.

amira was stunned, halted her journey, and prayed that the calm would return to Bethlehem. After 10 days, with news that the peace had returned, mother and child took to the road.

It was most fortunate that a hebrew caravan of more than fifteen members of all ages drew alongside her. “I have a very sick baby” she cried out, “Can you please, please help me?” The parade halted and an aged traveller stepped down to greet Amira “My name is Chavvah, how is your little one?” The kindly lady took the baby into her strong arms.

“You climb up here and I will pass on your baby… I can see this child is very sick.” once settled, amira received Beula wrapped in a tiny blanket; however, Chavvah continued examining the little one, and finally remarked “She is very sick indeed… I will apply some herbs and warm oil… it will help her sleep. Look, she is shivering. You must see a physician as early as possible. I fear for her life, this little one.”

and the caravan moved on and entered David’s city deep into the night. But they had to move on. Chavvah hugged the mother and kissed the baby farewell, and so journeyed on to their destination, leaving amira and Beula alone on the streets.

Suddenly she felt alone and help-less. Terror seized her heart. There were people around but they had other interests and certainly enjoying the merry atmosphere of the night. Nobody cared. Nobody knew there was a dying baby in her arms.

Terrified and feeling her helpless-ness, Amira cried out loudly “Does nobody care? My baby is sick and dying. I need help, I need a place, a physician!”

The cry was heard. From out of the tavern appeared a mature woman, possibly in her fifties, who was finally identified as the innkeeper’s wife. “I am here. Please stop yelling. I am here to help.”

THE CRIB

“My baby needs a warm bed. She is very sick and needs a doctor. Can you help, please?”

“Now you calm yourself; I am here to help you and your baby” the stranger spoke with a calm steady voice

“My name is Karniela. There is no room in the tavern tonight, but come with me, come follow me.”

amira felt some relief as she fol-lowed the lady to the back yard of the tavern. There before her was the cattle shed, a stable for the house animals. “Come, lay your child in that manger bed.”

and saying this, Karniela took the baby from the mother and softly laid her on the straw bed. and finding all types of clothing and broken blankets, smothered the child with its warmth. “You must spend the night here. It is so late. I can tell your baby is very sick. Tomorrow we will find a healer. Let me go and ask my husband for a bucket of clean hot water and some nourishment for both of you.”

and off went Karniela leaving amira and little Beula in the company of the house animals. all that was pos-sible was quietly accomplished and the only sound in that stable was the prayer flowing from a mother’s broken heart:

“o god of abraham, god of Jacob, god of mercy, have pity on my little baby and hear the plea of a sorrowing mother and spare my little one. Spare her, I beg of you!”

So, this was Bethlehem, the city of her dreams! a sorrowing mother, a broken heart, a dying baby and only a manger bed. The hour came when extreme fatigue and tears brought relief in sleep.

The dawn crept in slowly and silent-ly. one by one the animals began to announce their need for a morning feed.

amira awoke with a start. her eyes switched immediately to the crib. ahorrible dream had come to an end, or was it a dream? There, lying on top of the mangled blankets was baby Beula kicking, smiling and make happy noises… alive and excited! There was no explanation for this incredible change. No physician, no medicines, no sign of suffering!

What ecstatic joy when Karniela entered the scene with fresh towels and food. her face lit up with sheer delight and displayed total surprise as she cried “Praise be the god of Jacob!” But for explanations, there were none. however, Karniela did relate a happening some weeks before. another tiny baby was laid in this very same manger bed.

Meg O’Brien of the Catholic Bookshop, Cape Town expressed her view that “to sell over 2000 copies of a book with nothing but poetry, in only a few months, is close to a miracle.” And she is right!

The book “ON POETIC WINGS” has been hailed as “inspiring, and a fresh look at the beauty of our Catholic faith”. Selling at only R50 a copy, it has been widely distributed over the archdiocese, and far beyond its borders. Both editions are sold out, and despite the demand from differ-ent quarters, there is little chance for a third edition.

On Poetic Wings is a collection of poems on various aspects of our Catholic faith, written and published by Fr Ralph de Hahn in response to Pope Francis who recently highlighted the need for a fresh approach to evan-gelization. With the announcement of the Year of Faith, Fr de Hahn, now a retired priest over the past ten years, saw an opportunity to answer the urgent appeal of Archbishop Stephen Brislin to raise funds in order to pro-vide churches in disadvantaged areas in the archdiocese. So far, the book has raised more than R80,000 while the heavy cost of printing was covered by the poet himself and offered as a gift to the Church.

From his huge collection of poems produced over fifty years, he set about arranging those which treated the major Catholic themes, namely the Eucharist, the Incarnation, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Crucifixion, Creation and a number of personal insights. Fr de Hahn expresses his profound gratitude to Meg O’Brien and Keith Tamlin for their guidance and also to Michael Shackleton and Stephen Docherty for their encour-agement.

This was a daunting task for a

Retired priest and the Year of Faith

retired priest of 85, however he was encouraged by the two awards present-ed to him in 2006, namely winning first prize in poetry from the Poetry Institute of Africa, and also the gold medal international award for his ‘devo-tion to the poor of the missions’ from Rotary.

The priest insists “I did not do it alone. No way!! It was all from above. Very often when I re-read the poems I realize that I didn’t write that… certainly not me!”

Fr de Hahn, besides his love for poetry, is the author of original short stories and there is a strong demand that he should publish these too. But that, he fears, will call for a lot of time and money! As a priest with a missionary vision, he feels he serves a Universal Church, not a parish or a diocese, but rather a world com-munity thirsting for truth, love and justice.

He would love to find the church rich in its poverty, humble with such amazing power, and prepared to abol-ish the idea of a ‘poor parish’ and a ‘rich parish’. This, he says, will of course demand the gift of real faith, generous sharing and a deep trust in God’s providence.

The good news is that the book has provided a tool to many for evange-lization and we hear it has delighted and inspired many of other denomi-nations. Fr de Hahn has expressed his immense joy in receiving a letter of thanks from the archbishop himself.

Fr Ralph paying a visit to the children of St Joseph's Home, Montana in July 2013

In Ngome, kZN, over a ten year period, Mary appeared to Sr Renaldo May with these messages: “Call me Mary, Tabernacle of the Most High”. Pray and surround the altar with hosts, praying in order to hold back the hand of God. Priest and religious convert.” “Let a shrine be built where several streams meet. There my graces will flow and many prayers will be answered.”

We, the friends of Ngome, Cape Town extend this opportunity for more to join us on a pilgrimage to this most beautiful place of rest, getting away from the noise and hassle around us – no TV, no cell phones, no music – just you, Mary and God.

The Spred (Special Religious Development) Annual Mass of Thanksgiving was hosted (for the first time) by Sr Margaret and the commu-nity of Nazareth House on Saturday 21 September 2013.

It was attended by many of the parish groups who have Spred groups in their respective parishes – helping provide a catechesis for those with ‘special needs’.

The Mass was concelebrated by Fathers Mark Foster and Justin Chimba. Because it was held at Nazareth House, many of the children from the home were able to attend.

A bring and share was enjoyed by all after the Mass.

For further enquiries about ‘special needs’ catechesis, contact Treasure Landsman on 021 462 2417 or email:[email protected]

On Saturday 7 September St Anne’s, Steenberg held an Ecclesia social for the Constantiaberg deanery. Mass was celebrated at 5:30pm by parish priest Fr Paul Raile Dotaomai MSFS. This was followed by drinks and snacks in the parish hall. The social was a time for Ecclesia disciples to meet each other and share their experiences of the past sea-sons. The blessings of Ecclesia have been immeasurable to facilitators and disciples alike and it was evident by speaking to other parishioners that this sentiment was shared in their parishes as well. Ecclesia has not only created groups where people are able to learn and share their faith but also building communities of family and friends within the parishes.

Our co-ordinator Linda Johns and facilitators have been planning this event for months and it all came together with great team work. We would like to thank everyone who assisted, especially to all parishioners in the deanery who attended. St Anne’s has had three suc-cessful seasons of Ecclesia and is looking forward to Ecclesia: Year of Faith.

The Constantiaberg deanery comprises Bergvliet, Constantia, Grassy Park, Hout Bay, Plumstead, Retreat, Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont Steenberg and Wynberg parishes.

‘Use Constitution and ethics to fix SA’s problems’The election of Pope Francis has

heralded in many things. Not the least has been a renewed inter-est in the Society of Jesus and the spirituality which underpins the Jesuits. For many people the spirituality of the church has been confined to the realms of priests and the spiritual orders. however, there has been a significant shift in the last number of years, and increasingly ‘ordinary’ people have been exploring the rich tradition of the Church. The pope’s election may not have started the trend, but it has certainly given it some momentum.

Margaret Blackie, a respected spiritual director, writer and aca-demic recently released her book ‘Rooted in Love’ looking at Ignatian spirituality in everyday life. The launch was held on 19 September at St Michael’s Catholic Church, rondebosch and was addressed by the Rev. Sarah Rowland Jones. rev. Jones noted that the book is ‘utterly rooted in the difficult realities of life’. This, she noted, is what makes it unique because in a world where so many tomes extol perfection – which is impossible to achieve – ‘rooted in Love reminds us that it is in our humanity that god loves us and meets us and desires to walk with us’.

It is with this in mind that the author looks at a variety of issues, from who god is, to discernment and decision-making; what does liv-ing by grace mean and reaching the goal of holy indifference. all these are explored in a way which looks at the challenges of Christian life,

Rooted in Love

and at the same time challenges the reader to go beyond the superficial and deepen their own understand-ing.

rev. Jones noted that: “this is not a book for those who want the life of faith to be simple and straightfor-ward, a matter of clear rights and wrongs, with one-size-fits-all rules to follow. This is a book for those who have grasped, or are wanting to dare to grasp, that life should be lived as an exciting adventure, into which we are invited by the god who creates each of us a unique and beloved individual with our own specific vocations to explore, uncover, and pursue – so that we might become more fully our flour-ishing, unique, true selves”.

Those who fought for a democratic South Africa “got what we were fight-ing for”, and now the democratic structures must be used to fight cor-ruption and inequality, according to retired Constitutional Court judge Albie Sachs.

Addressing a round table discussion on leadership of service, hosted by the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office, Mr Sachs said:

“We’ve got the constitution that we fought so many years for. It alone won’t solve issues of inequality and corruption, but the structures it pro-vides will.”

Mr Sachs was in exile in Mozambique where he served the constitutional committee and the national executive committee of the African National Congress. After the movement’s unbanning, he played an active role in the negotiations which led to South Africa becoming a constitutional democracy.

In his address, he recalled his work with Oliver Tambo, president of the ANC in exile during the 1980s. “OR [Tambo] had the greatest influence on my life, yet he is barely known outside of this country; only as an airport,” Mr Sachs told the group of civil soci-ety leaders. He said Nelson Mandela played a “fantastic” role in the coun-try’s democracy, but “he didn’t create the movement, he didn’t create the values, he didn’t create the culture”.

“All the qualities that people admire in Nelson Mandela were in Albert Luthuli [ANC president from 1952-67]. They were in Oliver Tambo [1967-91]. When it’s three people in a row, it’s not a coincidence; it’s a culture.”

Trevor Manuel, minister in the pres-idency, said he had a “problem with the beatification of Nelson Mandela”. Mr Manuel was also speaking at the Catholic event.

He said there was a difference between leadership and authority of office. “Leadership is behavioural and it happens whether one is in office or not.”

Mr Manuel called for coherence of intention and action. He said a public representative needed to have inner core values. The minister pointed out that ethics and law are not the same thing. Referring to the Gauteng free-way improvement scheme, he said in the context of the constitution, one cannot just make decisions because it would eventually undermine the democracy of the constitution.

In light of eTolling, the minister said the government had taken the decision to not tax everyone but only those who choose to use their private vehicles on the roads. It was an issue of ethics, he said.

“We have to ask constantly whether steps have been taken to ensure they are in line with our ethics. It’s a matter of checks and balances—with ethics on the one hand and law on the other.”

The round table also included a presentation by award-winning jour-nalist Zubeida Jaffer.

Speaking on leadership and service, Ms Jaffer said South Africa had a long history of service, faith and education. “We have a strong sense of right and wrong, a strong conscience. Why, if

we have it in our blood are we seeing so many straying off that path?”

Ms Jaffer said for many it was an attitude of “it’s the way of the world”. This, she said, is corroding our future.

The journalist said that South Africans have not transitioned from a war-time attitude into peace-time attitude. “We only know how to march and protest. We don’t know how to be during peace-time.”

She said this is an area where faith-based organisations can make a dif-based organisations can make a dif-based organisations can make a difference. “Interfaith organisations must be in the business of hope. We need to learn to transform ourselves before transforming the country. Interfaith communities can help achieve this.”

Mr Sachs said it was sad that South Africans don’t fully recognise how great the country is. “It’s good that we take so many things for granted, but at the same time it’s sad.”

He concluded: “Leaders come and go; we should not worry about the personalities we see, but the institu-tions – those are important.

Those are there forever.”Article courtesy of Claire Mathieson,

hall. Married couples from the vari-ous movements and from a number of parishes attended and participated in an eventful morning. Everyone was warmly welcomed and the Year of Faith prayer was prayed, followed by some

joyful singing.Couples introduced themselves to one

another and shared with each other their spouses qualities and what they appreciated most about their spouses.

Scripture reading and reflection was done by Fr Peter John Pearson and he left us all with much to think about.

The bring and share lunch was enjoyed by all, and the fellowship and enjoyment continued during the lunch break.

After lunch we all gathered and lit our Couple Candles from the Year of Faith Candle and one of the couples proclaimed God's word, followed by the renewing of our marriage vows and commitment prayer.

The day concluded with a monetary offering and blessing of all couples by Fr Peter Ziegler.

The offering was presented to Fr Ziegler for Archbishop Stephen Brislin's Year of Faith Initiative.

As Catholics and people of faith, are our political and economic beliefs and actions a ref lection of what we believe? Our world is threatened by war, terrorism, growing economic inequality, environmental catas-trophe, substance abuse, violence, corruption, and divisions between religions, nations, races, genders, and ethnic groups. The opportunities for helping people, curbing violence, bringing peace and sustaining crea-tion are endless.

Every individual is a link in God's plan. We must ask the question, through prayer, where and how God is calling me to action? Each of us is one small piece in God's master web, but without each of us the web is bro-ken. Non-violent action means tak-Non-violent action means tak-Non-violent action means taking planned action in a non-violent way to resolve issues of injustice and violence in our time.

Justice and Peace projects that are currently being run within our arch-diocese are:

As Spring arrived in Cape Town, the city’s informal set-tlements and squatter camps were still suffering from the cold and wet weather brought about by a particularly rainy season. Thus, our Crisis Relief and Prevention Programme assisted many victims by pro-viding crisis relief items such as blankets, heavy duty plastic sheeting and basins filled with basic supplies such as food, soap, toothpaste and so on.

Three days after the first rains, relief workers went into the Europa and Philippi squatter areas which were badly affected by f loods. “We found out that the water was

“Buckets of Love” is here againPreparations have kicked off again for CWD’s annual Buckets of Love campaign, which starts at the end of October and lasts until December. CWD looks forward to hosting the school children and volunteers who will be coming in to pack the buckets.

Each Bucket of Love contains 13 basic food items and is aimed at providing food supplies to vulnerable and disadvantaged people across greater Cape Town this Christmas. For a donation of R130 per bucket, people can give love in bucket-loads. For families who are grateful for a single meal a day, this is a godsend and a Christmas they will never forget.

Can we call on your support? Donations can be made online using the website www.bucket-soflove.org.za, or deposited directly into our bank account. Account details: Standard Bank; account name: CWD Grapevine; account no: 0708 689 13; branch code: 020909.

A very big thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign over the years.

On Friday 30 August the women staff members of Catholic Welfare and Development (CWD) enjoyed a lunch and entertainment at Nazareth House in Vredehoek in honour of National Women's Day. The

day started with Mass which was celebrated by Fr Jerome Aranes. As a way of honour-ing women, the CWD male staff acted as hosts. It was a fun-filled day with the women being serenaded by musician

Cecil Peters and trumpeter Peter Walters. The day ended with Malcolm Salida, direc-tor of CWD acknowledging staff for their long service and presenting them with service award certificates.

Celebrating our Women

Abongwe Qokela, one of CWD’s youth workers with the Youth Interfacing Programme (YIP) had a rare opportunity to attend the 14th World Youth Day celebrations in Sao Paolo, Brazil. This was her first expe-rience of travelling by airplane, of travelling outside of South Africa and of being among so many people from different countries.

The participants felt a shared identity. Abongwe recalled, “Although we participated in various activities, we mobilised as one group, sharing breakfast together and attending Mass in the morning.”

She said the pervasive sense of international unity seemed uppermost in everyone’s mind. Participants were eager to get to know one another and expressed a real curiosity about each other's countries of origin. It was also an occasion for expo-sure to the cultures of different

countries, especially the singing and dancing associated with African countries.

Abongwe also realised that the African and American Church had large youth components, unlike other continents where young worshippers constituted a very small portion.

She found that youth prob-

lems around the world are the same, although the intensity of the problems differ from coun-try to country and each is try-ing to find suitable ways to to deal with them. Abongwe’s trip was part of a cultural exchange programme funded by Dreikoenigsaktion (DKA), which supports CWD’s work.

Focusing not only on giv-ing basic goods to people, but on the cause of the problem, is in accordance with CWD’s aim to bring long-term aid to poverty-stricken communities. Therefore we continue to work closely with local stakehold-ers such as the City of Cape Town and local government, to assist vulnerable communities

months after arriving in Cape Town.

Tabi recalled: “Eight years ago I was a resident at the shelter with all my children. CWD made my life easy at a time of great need. My experience at the shelter was the best and I still feel this is my home. I got all the support and care I needed until I could stand on my own two

feet. My children went to school, received uniforms and stationery and had the opportunity to go to camps, like normal children. On top of that we were clothed and fed. CWD gave me the oppor-tunity to attend English literacy classes and after that I attended the hospitality course at CWD’s Jobstart Training Centre.”

For Tabi it marked the begin-ning of a new dream. She was appointed supervisor at the upmarket Arabella restaurant. Women sharing a moment of unity celebrating Africa Day

After two years she received support to start a small business which involved the smoking of fish.

Tabi has since bought a house in her home country. Her eldest son is at university and she is able to pay all her children’s school fees and care for her fam-ily. She encourages women to find strength within themselves – not to look back, leave the past where it belongs and focus on the future.
