But no list can compare to the relationships our family has built with you and your support and encouragement during some very difficult times in our own lives. It was our intention to serve you, not to fall in love with you or this community. Now we find leaving to be a most difficult task. You have gotten under our skin and around our hearts, and leaving pains our family a great deal. Each day since I received the first phone call about my new responsibilities as Minister to Pfeiffer University and Pastor of the Village Church of Misenheimer, God has given us some clear sign in one way or another that He has these new plans for our family. The worst thing about being a Methodist is…

It’s official. It’s something we experience every 4 years or so. We are losing Dana, Pat, Aaron, and Ashley. Lately the district superintendent and the bishop have been leaving Methodist pastors at churches longer than the traditional 4 years. We have been very fortu-nate to have had Dana for 6 years. I confess it – I was hoping for three more years. It seemed logical for him to stay until Aaron had graduated from high school. I thought we

were in the clear for this year, until Dana came into my office with a solemn look on his face on April 22nd.

By now you know all of the details. As much as I will miss him, I know that Dana will be perfect for his new job. He will be great with the college students. He and Pat will feel at home at Pfeiffer University. He will help those college students make some of the most important decisions in their lives. Dana will be where he is needed and where God wants him to be.

But what will we do? This is graduation season, and as I thought about those graduation speeches that begin with “You are standing at an important crossroads in your life,” I thought about our church. Archdale United Method-ist Church is standing at an important crossroads, too. Dana told me that he really felt like God wanted him to move to Pfeiffer. He did not want to move. His family did not want to move, and there have been many tears shed over it; however, Dana has to do what he thinks God wants him to do. The good news is if God is moving Dana, He WILL look after our church and send us the right person to be our pastor.

I have met our new pastor, Stuart Noell. He is the kind of person that you like immediately. He is very excited to be coming to AUMC. Will he be a Dana? Of course not. Just as Dana was not Mary John, who was not Jeff, who was not Joel, who was not Keith. who was not Ralph. Every pastor is different. However, if we give Stuart a chance, he will be just what we need. We have to believe that. It is a part of being a Methodist.

John Wesley believed that a preacher should start a church and move on. He did not want us to grow lazy and too comfortable with a preacher. He knew that the people were the church, and they had the responsibility to keep the church going and growing. Every time we get a new pastor, we have a new chance to clean out our “waste bas-kets” and start again. This is a sad time for our church, but it also should be an exciting time.

Edward and Carolyn Lawrence’s favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." AUMC has prospered under Dana’s time with us, but the Lord has other plans for us and for Dana. Look at the verse again. God has plans for us to continue to grow and be the hands and feet of Christ, to give hope and a future to our community and world. God needs US to be the church, to cooperate in every way with our new pastor, and to continue our promise to support AUMC with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service.

We are standing at the crossroads of our church’s life. Which direction will we go?

I’ll see you in church.

Keep the faith. Cheryl

Congratulations to Amy O’Connell, daughter of Henry & Kathy Stuart. Amy has been recognized by the Mayor’s of Raleigh and Apex for her volunteer work with Carolina Donor Services. She will coordinate a statewide walk on behalf of the Polycystic Kidney Foundation. Rusty Smith, son of Norma &

Isaiah 9:6

I hope I’m the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!I hope I’m the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!I hope I’m the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!I hope I’m the first to wish you a Merry Christmas!

Yes, I know we’re very early in the season...and no, I’m not trying to rush the seasons! BUT, there is something I would like for us to do that will help us get ready for the

busy Christmas Season before the busy Christmas Season gets here!

So, here’s what I would like for us to do: put together a collection of Christmas thoughts, (e.g., original poems, songs, prayers, stories...perhaps even some special memories) that would be appropriate to

share with other members of our church family.

What we will have when we are finished is a little booklet with a selection or reading for each day of Advent, written by and for the people of AUMC. AND, WE’LL BE SO PROUD OF OURSELVES!

In the next few weeks, I will be visiting our Sunday School classes to see which of the days of Advent you would like to be responsible for. At that time, I will also provide Scripture readings to guide you as

you think about (and pray about) what you would like to say.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A WRITER TO DO THIS. YOU ONLY NEED TO LOVE. I PROMISE THAT THE CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS...THE CHRIST OF THE CROSS… THE CHRIST OF RESUR-RECTION LIFE...WILL PROVIDE ALL THAT YOU NEED..ALL THAT YOU’LL EVER NEED.

Disciple Street has a different beat this summer! Our themes for the summer are: June - Friendship, July-Choices, and August - Money and Time. Come meet the Bible

and find out how to use it to make everyday choices.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all of our leaders who have served on Disciple Street this year! Your gift to our children is priceless and the seeds you plant for Christ will multiply

MISSION TRIP 2009 Hedgesville, WV

July 12th-18th we are heading out to Hedgesville, WV! We have surpassed our goal of $7,000 and you, our church family have made that possible! We will go to work on the homes of people in a very rural and impoverished area of our country. We may be roofing, painting or other physical things for these families. More than anything we do, we want to be the hands and feet of Christ! How we build will not be as important as how much we should Christ through sitting and listening to someone’s story, playing ball with a child or binging a smile to someone

who has given up. You, our church will be with us. How you may ask?

1. We ask that you sign up on the prayer poster now on our mission board just inside the education building.

Say that on a specific day you will be in prayer for our team and those we meet. 2. We ask that each person going who

has a prayer partner lift them individually and send them off with a card or something that reminds them through the

week that you are with them.

We go to serve in His name! Your Summer Mission Team

Time Changes Things (Continued from Cover) Just as a reminder and to clarify a few things; United Methodist Clergy keep a covenant with each other that includes an understanding that when we move, we move. It is a sign of disrespect and a disservice to our successor for us to continually return to the community and church where we have served. When a former pastor constantly returns to a former church and community, church members tend not to develop strong positive relationships with the new pastor. Out of respect for each other, and to maintain our own personal integrity, it is important for us to do all we can to assist those who follow us by staying out of their way.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU CANNOT VISIT OR CONTACT US! To the contrary, we welcome your calls, e-mails and visits. Our family will be pleased and delighted to have ongoing contact with you. We have maintained important friendships from every congregation that we have served over 25 years. But we can only respond to your contact with us. I am very pleased to know that Stuart Noell, my colleague in ministry will be following me here. I trust that you will do your usual excellent job at making Stuart, his wife Lou Ann and their five year old daughter Emily feel welcome. You can drop them a line at 1020 12th Street PlNE, Hickory, NC 28601 or [email protected]. OUR LAST SUNDAY will be Sunday June 28th. On that Sunday we will have only one worship service at 10:45 AM that will take place in the Fellowship Hall. In preparation for our move, we will be packing our belongings June 15-17 and any help that you can offer will be welcome. Our plan is to vacate the parsonage for the week of June 19-27 so that it can be properly prepared for the incoming parsonage family. The Noells will be moving in the week of June 29th. Our families covet your prayers and support during this transition. Dana

Christmas In July!!

Hard to believe that it’s time to think about Christmas, but in order to collect, organize and ship our shoe boxes, we must begin early to ensure that the children we send them to receive them at Christmas time.

Starting in July, we will begin to collect and put together Christmas Shoe Boxes for the Children in Armenia. The collection date for the completed boxes is October.

What you will need to make and donate a box: A plastic (6/quart) box with a lid. A note of greeting and encouragement. Enclose $5 for the transportation cost of each box. (Make checks to: WNCC Treasurer and mark for AGAPE-Xmas Boxes).

Choose the age level and sex of the child the box will be prepared for (i.e., 5 year old boy). Each Sunday School Class will receive a list of items to purchase for the boxes.

If you have any questions, please contact Gayle Rearwin, Chairperson of World Missions at 861-4296 or email Gayle at [email protected] More information will be included in upcoming bulletins as well as the July newsletter.

Let’s help all the children!
