Your guide to Induction Week Monday 20 September - Friday 24 September 2021

Welcome to Newcastle University, and to the School of History, Classics & Archaeology. We have put together this timetable to ease your very first week in what can be a rather unfamiliar environment. Induction week is designed so that you have a chance to familiarise yourself with the School, and so you can get to know the staff and your fellow students. Please make sure you attend all relevant sessions. Induction starts on Monday where you will have a chance to meet your personal tutor, a member of staff in your subject area who will serve as a first port of call for you for advice and support on academic and pastoral related matters, who will explain the university's pastoral system in more detail. Monday 20 September

Between 10.30am – 2.00pm Tutor Meeting

You will find out who your personal tutor is by email ahead of Induction Week, this will include the

time and location of the meeting.

All meetings will take place between 10.30am and 2.00pm on the Monday of induction week; copy of

the schedule will also be posted on your Induction Canvas pages:

Tuesday 21 September

9.15am - 6.00pm Fieldtrip - Jarrow Hall Anglo-Saxon Farm

The day starts at 9.15am and finishes at 6.00pm. You will need to bring rough clothes and a packed lunch

(or lunch money).

You will spend the day with your student mentor and the other Stage 1 students in your mentoring group,

and will have a chance to practice a range of traditional skills and crafts including making pottery, fire and

flint tools. This will be a relaxed and fun day and a good way to make new friends and to get to know some

of your new lecturers.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

All students need to make their way to Bede Metro station for 9.15am where they will meet guides to take

them to Jarrow Hall Anglo-Saxon Farm, Church Bank, Jarrow, South Tyneside, NE32 3DY.

You can view a metro map, and plan your journey via the Nexus website.

This trip is compulsory but please complete the online form available at:

Wednesday 22 September

11.00am - 12.00pm Peer Mentor Session

Armstrong Building, Room 2.16 (Map Ref 22)

All new undergraduate students are assigned a peer mentor upon arrival at the University. The goal of

peer mentoring is to enable all students to make a smooth transition to feeling at home and settled into

the University community through access to the advice and support of a more experienced peer.

This session will give you the opportunity to met your mentor and have an informal chat with your Peer

Mentor group. Details of the groups and their locations will be posted on your Induction Canvas pages:

10.00am - 1.00pm Stage 1 Module Fair

Want to take modules in other subjects?

In Stage One, you have the option to take 20 credits in subjects other than those offered by the school

of History, Classics and Archaeology. If you are interested in doing so, please visit the, this will give

you an opportunity to find out more information about the modules available within the Faculty and to

speak to members of staff who teach them.

The module fairs will be held via Zoom, the details of how this works and the links themselves will be

published for Induction Week on your Canvas Induction pages.

Thursday 23 September

WELCOME RECEPTION

5.00 - 8.00pm

Armstrong Building, Kings Hall (Map Ref 22)

An Important part of student life is to make friends and become part of a community. With this in

mind, you are warmly invited to attend a reception where you can meet other students and staff in

an informal social setting.

The reception is for all V400 (Archaeology), VV14 (Ancient History and Archaeology) and VV41

(History and Archaeology) students.

Wine, soft drinks and nibbles will be served.

Everything is free of charge.
