Knowledge-based Society

Archaeology, History, heritage studies, anthropology are already the favorite theme of television channels like Discovery, National geography, History and so on.

The need to understand the past will be much more

deeper in the emerging knowledge-based society.

ICT technology will help in furthering this understanding.

What do Archaeologists do?• Archaeologists do much more than excavation. • They teach, analyze artifacts and sites, publish the

results of their research, curate museum galleries, and also produce documentaries.

• They engage in surveys, monitoring, testing, data recovery, archival research, and preservation efforts.

• They undertake qualitative analysis and also apply mathematical and statistical concepts.

Archaeology is Interdisciplinary

• Example:– Near-infrared spectroscopic imaging in art conservation: investigation

of drawing constituents By Michael Attas et al. Journal of Cultural Heritage, April 2003.

Seven authors are from five disciplines - Institute for Bio-diagnostics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Geography, Art Gallery, Department of History

• Specialized interdisciplinary educational programs in Conservation Architecture, Bio-archaeology , and Geo-archaeology are already well accepted.
