PROJECT DESCRIPTION 2
I. PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS
- Design Concepto The intention of the design was to create a main public space that the
other parts of the program would revolve around. Since the site was located near surrounding park and entertainment areas, the macro of the design was to create a building that was the center of those functions and you could start at the building and make your way north to Memorial Park or southward towards the arts district. From the macro, the program of the building then becomes the micro in that it utilizes the program to create a lobby space that accommodates both the school and concert hall visitors.
- Project Issueso The main issue to be dealt with was that the front part of the site is in the
10-500 year flood plain. o The fact that one side of the site is on Montrose, traffic in and out of the
site would be a problem because of the density of traffic that goes through Montrose.
- Design Strategieso Some design strategies that I used was the placement of parking near the
existing apartment parking garage to be able to utilized the rest of the site as landscaping.
- Design Resolutionso To resolve the idea that for traffic, to drop people off at this theater
coming on Montrose would create a problem, I added a new thoroughfare, which puts distance between the new building and existing apartment, to bring that traffic off of Montrose.

Christopher Dao [MONTROSE SOCIETY OF MUSIC]
7 HISTORICAL TRADITIONS AND GLOBAL AWARENESS
Since the 1950s, the Montrose area has been home to a rich history of musical talents. From bars on Fourth Ward to Cezanne, these venues have hosted anyone from acoustic jazz artists to alternative acts.
In regards to the site, the site has been home to the first Sears-Roebuck store in Houston (1929) before it moved to its current location in Downtown. Then in the 1940s, it housed a temporary office building for Baylor College of Medicine before making yet another facelift in the 1950s to pave the way for Houston’s first storage business.
Currently, Montrose is part of a developing master plan that includes creating a more pedestrian-accessed street with the addition of a light rails that runs from Allen Parkway towards the fine arts district.
The proposed concert hall site will create a “mini” arts district on Montrose that mirrors the fine arts district in that it will create a central location that people will come to see artists as if they were paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

1983 MUSICAL PRECEDENCE
A dusty circus them

coming from
the strings of lights draped over the deepbooth seating.
Live bands play on the corner stage almost every night.
Frequently, famous bands such as U

12 SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES
The proposed building design down to the materials used suggests a sustainable building. The reason that the building is located where it is and the buildings placed in the current place is to create shaded areas around the amphitheater without the ability to minimize the use of shading devices. Since the building is set back far enough from W.Dallas, the use of trees to help shade the building also adds to minimize this.
Because this is in Houston, the amount of sunlight is always a possibility for solar collection. With the abundance of flat roof and use of the cool roof technology, there is the ability to put enough solar panels on the roof to power the concert hall. The windows that are being used are low-e glass so the energy that is loss from within isminimized through the windows.
With Buffalo Bayou to the north and the integration of a retention/detention pond within the site, I have decided to integrate gray water/rainwater collection systems into the design. The reason for this is that because this is a concert hall/music school, water is not constantly being used throughout the day and the peak hours of use would be during performances and between classes in addition to the traditionaluses of flushing toilets and drinking fountains. If we can collect the gray water from toilets and reuse it for all toilets, it is one less connection that would have to be runfrom the nearest City of Houston sewer system into the building. The rainwater collection system would the use of irrigating the surrounding landscape, existing and new.
