Ahakam Alaedh Assignment #

Description:

we were told to observe this photo which was done by Malevich and his own story behind this photo was to de-sign a buliding out of these elements, so our duty was to observe these elements and then will be making a model out based on this photo.

MODEL 1

My concept was I observed an L shape which stood out in Malvech’s picture and I linked this shape into my design in that it also repre-sented the L shape movement of the knight piece in the game of chess.

MODEL 2

!is model was the second model and a continuation of the chess movement idea ap-plied to the "rst one. !e pil-lars stand for the other pawns in the chess board and serve as support for the 3 levels of the structure.

Description:

We were supposed to choose three adjectives that apply to us, and mine were warm, complex and aggressive. !en "nd a photo that inspired us and the photo had to deal with that adjectives as well. !en will draw a lot of drawing in order to expand our ideas inorder to come up with a bunch of models in the end will make a model based on that photo and the adject-

!is model represents a staduim and I used the three adjectives that I have chosen which, were complex, aggressive, and warm. !en, I lined them all into my design. !e triangles show some aggressiveness. !e half sercular shapes are show-ing some complexity through the desgin in terms of the way they are presented. I meant to make the structure smooth in order to follow my last adjec-tive which is warm.

!is model was my second model and it really stands to the concept the

most

!is one stands for my mind! and I used the three adjectives as well. For in-stance the triangle stand for the aggressive part.

I did this model based on a book

that I was given by my father, which was about a war and this model stands for a bat-

tle"eld, but I also lined my adjectives into my structure.

!is model is the sec-ond model and it also stands to a battle"eld. I made to saides and each side has its own

troops and each troops control their own area. !e river below gives a warm feeling, so who-ever wins and will oc-

THE FINAL PROJECT (PART) 1

!e "nal project was devided into two di#erent ap-proaches, the sectioning approach and the folding model. We were told to make three models for the "rst part which is called “!e sectioning approach.” By doing that, I, as a student architect, I learned a lot about the site in terms of the use of materials, predicting weather to perform better. I was confused in the be-ginning because I thought I was only assigned to come up with a new disign rather than a concept.Honestly I did not understand the task in the be-ginning because I had no idea what a sectioning ap-proach was. But now I believe that my performance has improved throughout the semester with the skills that I acquired from my Instructor. 4

FINAL PROJECT (PART 2)

!e second approach was called the folding model. In fact I faced the same issue that I faced in the "rst step which was misundersting the task itself. But then, I did a lot of research about the folding model and what it should look like in the "eld of architure. !en I did another three models when I understood the con-cept of the second step. Lastly, when I was done from the second part of the "nal design which was to make three folding models, I was not really satis"ed with my desgin. But then I promised myself that I would do the last approach as good as I can and would put full e#ort on it.

FINAL PROJECT (PART 3)

For the last step of the !nal project, each student was supposed to end up with nine models and then we would be devided in two or three teams, and each team would choose the best design out of the nine each student did. Our team was consisted of six members in the start and later on, two of them dropped this semeter. So we ended up with only four students. My team chose me to be the team designer and the team manager. Honeslty, when they decided to give me that position, I was aware of the responsiblities that were awaiting me, as I tried my best to encourage them to work as team and get the work done before the the deadline. I personally believe that I have achieved my goal that was to come up with the best model out of the 9 models, chosen for the !nal. And that exactly what happened. Our group chose my design and we did all we could to construct the project on the site. I am very proud of the group that I worked with, and I believe that we all performed well.

Narrative and site selection ratio-nale “our group decided to choose this section of the wall because we were all drawn to the six panels with faces. We wanted to create a place not only for seating but also for one that has a story behind it. Within this structure, people are able to encounter three di!erent spaces. Starting with the most per-sonal space, the seat for only one person is designed with an open ceiling to inspire day dreaming. We chose one of the most relaxed and calm faces to frame. "e second space is for 2 people to inhabit, and it inspires conversation between people. "e last space is the largest seating for 4 people, and it inspires the sense of community”.

2 (Site design Analysis )

“Something unique about the spot we chose is the fact that there are six enormous panels in the middle of our selection, but there were only attached holes on the outside of the panels. !is means that for us to begin the design, we needed to create something that is mainly supported by the outer side of our panels. With that in mind, we decided to transform our original design”. !e main idea was to cover the faces out of MDF, but our group had a "nancial issue, so we found something a way cheaper and nice as well which, was the curtain sheets.

3 (Response and concepts )“!is selection may not have been the easiest because our group soon realized that the extremely wide space required a strong support system capable of housing people,

4( Design Concept and Approaches) “Two of our main goals were to provide seating anda private place to inspire conversation between people. In our three section design, there are contrast, a private vs public , an inwards vs outwards, and a day-dreaming vs conversation space. Each section is de-signed with seating for one person to re!ect on things and day dream, seating for two people to gather and converse , and seating for four people to promote social interaction.” 5( Rationale for material se-lection and construction method)

“While coming to the realization that our structureneeded to be strong and stand almost parallel to the wall. We came to a conclusion that we should create a strong skeleton, then make that skeleten more eye- catching and draw people in, we decided to try and create a similar style to Kengo Kuma. For the skin, we decided to make a "nancial decision and use recycled wood from wooden pallets”

7(Findings Discoveries and Insights ) First o!, we all understood that in order to "nish this structure, we were all going to need to come to work on the structure outside of class, and with busy schedules, all four of us were not going to be able to be there during those times. We also realized that time wasn’t on our side: it was not until out time was almost up that we realized we needed to all work faster and more e#ciently. $at is excalty what we did. One of our wakens was that our design at "rst was not very strong. We all had to an idea of what we are doing but not a clear vivid picture. We all had strong concepts , and no matter what we messed up on, we would solve the problem immediately: for ex-ample, we put our support system up and realized that our pieces that were attached to the wall were not straight. We then took them o! and re-did them. Every time we made a mistake we learned how to im-prove and make it better.

8( Critical questions )

How do we draw people in? We meant to add to many pieces of wood to the exterior of the desgin in order not to let people know what is going on unless they walk throughout the desgin. In fact the was one of our goals.

How are we going to cover the faces that wedon’t want to be seen? In the beginning we had a hard time covering the faces on the panels, because we were told not to harm the panles at all. With that said, we had to cover the faces very carefully by usuing a bunch of curtains. We found this material is the best out of the others, such as clay and MDF wood.

How are we going to support this structure ? In fact, in the start we had no idea how to deal with the site at all. In terms of what would the best materials be for our design and how would we be able to constract the structure to the concrete and to intract our design to the wall.

How to make sure that nothing is going to shake or wobble and be unstable? !at was the logic behind the adding pieces of the wood around the wall, and that was mainly to hold the wall from di"erent angles.

WHAT ALHAKAM ALAEDH LEARNED FROM THIS COURSE.

Firslty, I would like to thank Jurry our Instructor for having me in his class. Also I really apprecaite the e!ort he put on us. I personal-ly believe that my performance has improved throughout the semes-ter with the skills that I optained form Jurry. And now I became more aware of making models and coming up with a reason for everything I make in my desgin. Honeslty, now I leanred more about my major which is Architure in terms of mkaing desgins and be aware of the time and other stu! such, as doing some sketches and diagraming in order to give a clear vision to me as a student Architect and the audience as well. Architecture to me is an art, merged with science and technology, acquainted with history, nature, and the future. Also I really like this quote by (David Chipper"eld) I may not be the most interesting archi-tect, but I’m still out there and have maintained some position of integ-rity. #ere are no enough words to express how much these words mean to me, because I am really oppssed by this quote and it really applies to me as a student Architect.
