INTERNSHIP TRAINING AND REPORT 1 |
1.0 INTRODUCTION
In this module, we are required to take part in a full-time internship attachment with a minimum
requirement of eight weeks. With this module, we are able to involve in working in architectural /
construction practices which can help us to develop an understanding of the general rule of principle
and procedure of law and legislation such as Building by-laws.
In these nine weeks of internship training in DrTanLM Architect, I have been involved in
projects which include schematic design, permit application and contract documentation. The projects
that I have been assigned were High Commiseration of India in Kuala Lumpur (competition), Tar UC,
SS5A Frances Residence, Victor Lee Residence, T-Canopy and Marina Park Show Unit.
Besides that, I have also participated in the tender document process with Dr. Tan Loke Mun.
This process is highly private and confidential as each tenderer will submit their tender documents to
bid for the job. It was a good experience to be able to see how the real process works. In addition, I
have also learnt different ways of folding the tender drawings which will be sent to the authorities for
submissions.
I have also participated in submitting the CCC documents to the Majlis Perbandaran Kajang
(MPKJ) authority. It was a tedious work as we need prepare a lot of documents in order to get
approved by the authority. I have also gone to Res Trees in Country Heights, Kajang, for a site visit
for inspection.
This module was definitely a good head start for me to experience the real working life.

2.0 PROJECTS
2.1 High Commiseration of India in Kuala Lumpur (COMPETITION)
Figure 2.1.1: Perspective View of Proposed High Commiseration of India
DrTanLM Architect has participated in a competition to redevelop the chancery complex and
adjoining residences of Indian High Commission which is situated in Kuala Lumpur. It is a
redevelopment and construction of a New Chancery Complex consisting of Chancery Building, Indian
Cultural Centre and 16 Nos Non-RG Residences for India Based Officials of the High Commission of
India at Kuala Lumpur.
It was a golden opportunity to take part in this competition as I can work alongside with Dr.
Tan Loke Mun and his team. For the first week, I was in-charge of area programming. Then, I was
assigned to key in most of the sketches done by Dr. Tan Loke Mun himself into AutoCAD drawings. It
was indeed a long process in finalising the floor plans as there were many requirements in this
competition. I have also been assigned to draft two sections of the building and also prepare the
presentation drawings of the floor plans. Throughout this project, I have learnt to be more efficient
and organised in using AutoCAD as I was the main drafter for the floor plans. Time was very crucial
for me as everybody was in need for the floor plans to kick-start their parts. Besides that, preparing
the presentation drawings has improved my Photoshop skills.

2.2 Tar UC, Kuala Lumpur
In this project, I have been assigned to make a 3D model of a terrain by referring to the
contour lines from the Survey Plan given by the authority. I have also modelled a proposed road
entrance with the requirements set by Uniform Building By-Law. This has helped me to improve my
modelling skills in SketchUp and also a better understanding of how important the requirements are
before planning. In week 8, I have been assigned to amend the front elevation for an extension of
school hostel for the clients to see.

2.3 SS5A Frances Residence
Situated in SS5A, Petaling Jaya, this is a terrace house renovation project for Ms. Frances. I
was assigned to prepare Door Window Schedule and also amend the floor plans and specifications. I
have also changed the tagging of windows and doors. Later on, I have drafted a simple Drainage
System which I have learnt in Building Service in my previous semester. I have also proposed three
façade designs for this terrace house. It was a challenging task to design the façade as there were a
few restrictions given by the authority.

2.4 Victor Lee Residence
The task that I have received in this project is to amend the floor plans of the bungalow. I was
assigned to change the spaces following the client’s new requirement. Also, I have calculated area of
each space by using the “LIST” command in AutoCAD.

2.5 T-Canopy
In this project, I have been assigned to draft detailed drawings for glass panels as part of
tender drawings for submission. This has helped me to understand more about the joints and
connections between each glass panels and also between glass panel and solid wall.

2.6 Marina Park Show Unit
Marina Park Show Unit is a project situated in Johor. This project consists of two main
building which are a show gallery and a show unit. I have been assigned to prepare a Master List and
Door Window Schedule for documentation purposes. I have understood the schedule arrangement is
very crucial to improve the efficiency in working. As I was compiling the schedule, I have tallied the
floor plan and detailed drawings. I have also assigned to calculate the natural lighting and ventilation.
This is important for building plan submission to get the permit for the local authority.

3.0 CONCLUSION
It was truly an eye-opening experience to observe the working life of an architect and
draftsmen in the company. Working in DrTanLM Architect has definitely helped me to expand my
connections with the staff members in the company. It was also a pleasure to be able to gain a better
understanding of my future career. Besides that, this training has given me a positive understanding
of importance in adapting various projects at the same time. Although, it was an intensive nine
weeks of internship training, it was extremely valuable and it has definitely opened up my mind to
strive and pursue my career.
