Fire hazards caused by arc faults in electrical installations

Each year in Europe, 2 million fires occur in Europe, mainly in residential and commercial buildings costing billions of property damages and numerous deaths. 33% of these fires are caused by electrical faults in electrical installations.

Circuit Breakers and Earth Leakage detection protects from fire but NOT always…Arc faults in damaged cables or loose connections are some-times intermittent peak currents of low intensity, not detected by traditional Miniature Circuit Breakers or Residual Current Devices, but sufficient enough to create carbon built-up, up to 1000°c local heat and ignite fires.

What causes Arc Faults?Arc faults are small electrical arcs generated by loose connec-tions, isolation defects in high impedance circuits due to aging or damaged load circuits.

What is an Arc Fault Detection Device (AFDD)?

An Arc Fault device detects series, parallel or ground arc fault on an early stage, before a fire can occur and disconnect the final circuit with the associated circuit breaker, ground leakage device or breaker.

The diagrams below explain the different level of protections you can expect from MCBs, RCBOs (2P) and AFFDs

This type of arc fault occur on a broken conductor of the final circuit, with a low current level above or equal 5A.

This type of arc fault occur on a damaged final circuit (pierced cable by nails or clamp), with an arc between two conductors: phase to phase or phase to neutral or ground. The current level is high and not limited by the load and is above or equal 75A.

Applications of Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDD)

AFDD (Arc Fault Detection Device) is governed by the European installation standard IEC 60364-4-42 which recommends its installation in Europe in locations indicated on table left.

Germany, under its low voltage electrical installations standard DIN VDE 0100-420, has made the implementation of AFDD mandatory in locations indicated on table left starting January 2018.

Historically, GE was already manufacturing similar protection with Its equivalent in North America, the AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter), available on the market since 1995 and mandatory in residential installations such as bedrooms since 2002).

GE Global Warranty

Complete Solution for all your local installation regulationsAF series are designed to comply with European installation standard IEC 60634-4-42 and Arc Fault Detection Device standard IEC/EN 62602 – More-over, AF devices come in top or bottom power version and Left or Right Neutral position to meet all local regulations and covered under GE‘s global warranty

Arc Fault Detection DevicesGE’s answer to the need for reliable, safe, compact and easy add-on protection devices against fire caused by arc faults in electrical installations.

Reliable. Flexible. Safe. The AF-series features in one add-on module a complete detection against fire caused by arc faults in final circuits. Installed in series with Unibis MCBs and RCBOs (2P), AF-series offer a compact and flexible alternative for new or retrofit electrical installations, meeting local electrical standards with only a few devices.

AF Series combine the following functions:• Parallel or series arc faults detection in damaged cables or

loose connections• Overheating protection of electronic components in loads

due to slow overvoltage.• Circuit opening without the need of external handle• Combined with Unibis MCBs, RCBOs (2P), ceRCBOs(1) and a

maximum rated current of 40A / 230VAC in 1 Pole/Neutral or 2 Poles circuits in full coordination under short-circuit conditions up to a rated breaking capacity (Icn) of 10,000 A.

• Top or Bottom incoming supply, Neutral right or left to meetlocal electrical installation rules.

• Manual test/reset & periodic automatic test• Self-testing function• LED status indicator – test/reset button• DIN-rail mounting and Pozidrive retained screws

FlexibleAdd-on AF devices give you the freedom to chose the most appropriate protection for your final circuits in the most compact way for your new or existing installation.

• Only 6 models needed to make all your combinations and comply with local electrical installation regulations

• Top, bottom power entry or neutral right or left positions• DIN-rail mount for quick installation• LED hazard indication for quick trouble shooting (Include RCBOs

(2P) offer additional indicator to identify ground fault tripping)• Common busbars to quickly connect AF to MCBs, RCBOs (2P),

ceRCBOs• Common Unibis auxiliary alarm contacts

GE’s compact solution gives you significant space and inventory material cost reduction and flexibility for future add-ons.

Designed for all possible combinationsGE’s AF - Arc Fault Detection Devices are well suited for the following applications:

• Premises with sleeping accommodations.• Fire-propagating structures, i.e. high-rise buildings• Branch circuits with high loads, such as machines,

dryers, dishwashers• Woodworking, paper and textile industries• Storage areas with combustible materials• Wood buildings and Barns• Airports• Railway, Subway stations• National monuments, museums• Public buildings• Laboratories• Data centers• Daycare centers• Retirement homes• Barrier-free apartments
