Well readers its Movember.

Ive not shaved since Nov 1st and now have a handsome display of facial hair. Im taking part in theMovember Marathon to raise money for 4 deserving charities in the Limerick area.(my Winter base)

This annual event has a target this year of 20,000.

The big shave off takes place on Dec 2nd.

Ar chuala t plane inniu ? Nor chuala . (Did you hear a plane todayI did not). This will mean noearly post and no papers yet. We have to wait until the ferry comes

Since a couple of days it is calm; there is hardly any wind at all and the mainland is completely

isolated. A low fog is hanging over the Atlantic while a monotonous drizzle is falling down for days

now, without any stopping at all. It is not cold, on the contrary, the air feels very soft, but looking

through the window I find it hard to leave the lovely warm place of the fire, just now, and to go

outside. Everything looks so bleak, dark and dull It is Tjitske, my dog, which is the very reason Igrab myself together, get on my raingear again and as go brch linn (off we go)

Strength

I choose to take the low road. As soon as I have hit the road I am happy I actually did hitTheatmosphere is amazing; a vague sort of layer is put on the island but despite of that, everything which

is nearby gets its focus; the saturated stonewalls polishing their individual blocks of stone in a

brightly colour of bronze. I am struck by the intense liveliness of the material. The composition of

the blocks carefully laid down on one another reveal the many and many years of history

Love and Caring

Coming up I hear a heavy but dull noise at the background, far down below; in their movement the

waves are confronted by the rocks. The only way out is to reveal themselves in a gracious movement

of spray. Absolutely thrilled by what I am in, just now, I stand still, indulged in prayer. A moment

later I become aware of a cow, from the highest terrace, staring at me.

Looking at it today, it is hard to believe Although the sky was still cloudy early in the morning

when I was coming up towardsDn Chonchir, the big fort, it felt already like opening up. Thequarter moon with Jupiter still to be seen on its right sight, was sometimes peeping through theclouds. A few birds, sitting together in comfort on the electric wire were singing their song already.

All signs for a lovely day lying ahead of us. The phrasetanlgobre(itisaclearandfineday) usedwhen meeting on the road onInis Mein, on a day like this,willprobably be heard many a time today.

It was only last week we celebrated the festival of Halloween which also marks the turning point of

the seasons. One turns ones back to the summer which is over now and faces the season of winter

which is coming towards us. In between there is a little break or a gap. For a while there is an

atmosphere now in which the border between the physical and the other world has become more or

less transparent, like a curtain out of lace, one could say. It is probably this break in between that

makes it easier now to come into contact with the other world. During pagan times it was just the

festival of Halloween which marked this situation. With ChristianityLSamhna( All SaintsDay)andLnaMarbh(All SoulsDay) have been added.

During this period of celebration last week, the weather was very bad. Heavy showers, sometimeseven with hail alternated by strong winds as well.

However it was in this stretch of time that two dearly beloved islanders, only a couple of days after

each other, passed the border of the other world. After the funerals were over weather changed into

peace again.

Meaning that the smallest of the Irish Aran islands, and the closest to theCliffs of Moheron which it

provides a spectacular point of view, casts a spell on some visitors, and surely it did on the on the one

writing here.

I disembarked from theferry, after half an hour crossing from Doolin, and I felt I arrived home, I

immediately felt that I belonged. And I felt that the island belonged to me. How else can you explain

the fact that just hours from stepping on the pier I regarded the one-day tourists as a nuisance and

cherished the moment when I saw the last ferry departing: then the island was all to ourselves.

Those were the moments I enjoyed it the most, after dinner, when the sun was about to go down

onInis Meainand you could almost touch the peace in the air. On the first evening, with a deep bluemoonlit sky, after a short but heavy rain, I discovered a small, secluded, beach, which immediately

became my beach. And I spent a lovely time there, just thinking and listening to the soothing soundof the ocean.

And on the island everybody says hello when you pass by, everybody stops whatever they are doing

if you look like asking something, so to answer, and everybody makes some conversation, in shops,

pubs, bars, on the road, wherever. And theres always a cup of tea and a scone. During the afternoon.

In the evening its a pint of Guinness you drink together with the regulars in one of the two pubs onthe island, where you dont feel lonely even if you are alone. Its a contagious friendliness the oneyou breathe on the island.

And then, when you see somebody more than a couple of times, then you are best friends and start

talking about everything, from the weather to the ocean, from politics to gossip, from your life to my

life.

Inis Orris an Island to taste and savour and enjoy slowly and on your own.

You can rent a bicycle but the small dirt roads are always up and down and riding can be strenuous,

and, most of all, with a bike you cannot follow the big red dots, and it would be a crying shame not

to.

When you arrive in front of the ocean, the tracks and the fields finish and the rocks begin.

And on the rocks there are the big red dots, which you follow and feel confident, with a purpose and

a path, an explorer bound to discover a brand new world, for you, but an ancient and timeless one for

itself, full of beauty and peace.

I walked almost every path on this small Island, which is bigger than you expect and imagine, and

richer and more varied, and I looked at the ocean and took it in, and breathed its energy and force, so

to draw on it once back to my real home.

Inis Orr is made for walking, along the roads and the tracks lined by hundreds of dry stone walls

dividing small fields where peaceful cows, some horses and a few sheep graze, tracks that wind

through an ever changing landscape where it is so easy to feel lost, but you just need to look around

and find some familiar landmark: the lighthouse, the ship-wreck, the cliffs on mainland, the long

coast exposed to the ocean, the secluded beach, the reassuring profile ofInis Mein looking west

towards open ocean, and therefore find back your place on the Island, and in the world and withinyourself.

Sunset

This is an Island of sea and limestone, of blue and gray, of some wild flowers and no trees. An island

with short and intense showers, and long sunny days, surrounded by the ocean that seems so peaceful

and mild when you stare at it perched on the rocks, but which can be not so tranquil when you cross

it on the ferry to Rossaveal.

Or maybe its the island that doesnt want you to leave, that doesnt want to break the spell.

Maybe the island wanted to keep me there. And I wanted to stay.

Another summer has passed already since there was the first contact about the possibility of

composing a documentary aboutlife year roundon Inis Mein. At the same time similar contactswere made on Cape Clear, a small island off the coast of Cork.

In the past there have been made several documentaries, at least about Inis Mein. This time though

the emphasis is put on the people who having been living here now only since a short time. Why did

they come and how do they look upon life on Inis Mein.

During the year, starting Midsummer last year until June this year, a film crew based in Dublin camedown for a few days each month. Next to interviews with the persons who had been asked

beforehand they were filmed during the undertaking of their activities at the time.

With these two documentaries one has tried to work out resemblance as well as differences in livinglife between the two islands.
