A Raisin in the Sun Final Assessment
Directions: Make sure to FULLY READ the instructions for each prompt, then select which
prompt to complete. Remember, you will turn this sheet in with your test. You can use it to
make notes but do not pre-write your entire assignment. You will write your prompt
response in class on Tuesday, February 21st.
NOTE: I expect to see at least a page of writing on your final assignment. I will be able to tell
if you have given the minimum amount of effort. More than the minimum is expected for an
excellent grade .
1. Character Analysis Essay:
In a well-developed five paragraph essay, choose one of the dynamic characters inA
Raisin in the Sun and analyze their development throughout the play. Who is the
character and what are some of their key traits? What is the characters dream in the
beginning, and how does it change by the end of the play? Use specific examples from
the text and cite the page number. Remember what you learned from your research
paper: use transitions, introduce quotes, paraphrase or summarize if something is toolong, and make sure to fully explain quotes before moving on.
2. Poetry Analysis and Poetry Writing:
Re-read A Dream Deferred (on page xi of yourA Raisin in the Sun book). Take two
paragraphs to analyze the use ofsimile in the poem. Make sure to explain how the
characters and their dreams are like a raisin in the sun. How do they change by the
end of the play? How does the last line - Or does it explode? - connect to the ending of
the play? Once you have written your two paragraph analysis, write a poem thatuses
simile to close the end of the play. This poem should be at least ten lines in length.
3. Creative Writing:
Create a scene that would occur ten years after the end of the play showing what has
happened to Walter, Ruth, Beneatha, Mama, and Travis. You can portray the familys
future life in either a positive or negative way, as long as the portrayal connects to the
events ofAct 3 in some way. It can be written in the format of a play or a narrative, but it
should contain examples of dialogue.
4. Personal Connection:
Many of you told stories of your own familys conflict during a quick write. Expand upon
the story of you and your family. Compare and contrast your family with that of the
Youngers (Walter, Ruth, Mama, Beneatha, and Travis). Does your family fight like they
do in the beginning, or has adversity made you stronger? Compare your struggles with
what they go through. If you have experienced poverty, family turmoil, or prejudice, tell
me your story. Show how you connect with a particular character or event in the play.
This is one of the easier prompts, so if you choose this one, I expect you to wow
me!
