Sure Steps to Spiritual Life

Absence of VanityVanity is the quality or state of being vain or elated with a high opinion of one’s own accomplishments or achievements. It is empty pride inspired by an overwhelming conceit of one’s personal attainments. What you have learnt is only a handful. What you have not learnt is an oceanful. False learning makes one proud and self-conceited.

Moral and spiritual pride are more dangerous than the ordinary pride of wealthandpower.Alsotheyaremoredifficulttobeeradicated.Aspirantsshould be ever vigilant and cautious. They should always keep up the spirit ofserviceandhumanity.Donotboastofyourbirth, position, qualificationsand spiritual attainments. Remember the evanescent nature of all things phenomenal. Praise others. See good in all. Treat even the lowliest creatures as your equal.

Service in ActionSwami Sivananda Saraswati

In order to attain success in yoga, practice is necessary. Have no patience with theoretical spirituality. By contemplating in a closed room for years, you may not advance more than a few steps. One cannot reach perfection or freedom from the effects of karma merely by renouncing action. The effects of past actions can only be washed away by fresh virtuous actions in the present, that is, by karma yoga and seva, or selfless service. There is no other way of purifying

oneself. There is no other method of getting rid of unwanted impressions and desires.

No meditation and samadhi are possible without preliminary training in karma yoga. Yoga is not hidden in caves or sequestered forests. It is not to be found in mountain herbs. God is not a coward that he needs to run away from towns, cities and villages. He is all-pervading. Yoga does not force you to flee from your worldly career to solitary places. It does not ask you to hide in a Himalayan cave to attain supreme peace. It tells you to resist unrighteousness, develop uplifting virtues and try to attain self-realisation in and through the world.

The doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi is, "Do all actions without the expectation of fruit." To work without attachment is doubtless a difficult and uphill task. But it becomes easy and pleasant for one who cultivates patience and determination. Do you expect anything from your small child if you do him some service? In a similar manner you have to work for others also without expecting anything. You have to expand your heart and think that this whole world is your own self.

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 4 Mar/Apr 2014

In the beginning this may give you a little pain because you have never done it before, but when you have tasted a bit of the bliss of karma yoga, you can never leave it. The force of karma yoga will induce you to work more and more, with greater zeal and enthusiasm. You will begin to feel that this whole world is a manifestation of divinity. You will gain immense inner strength. Your heart will be filled with sympathy, mercy and pure love.

In the beginning your actions may be selfish. But if you work hard in the field of karma yoga for two years, five actions may be unselfish and ninety-five selfish. Scrutinise your motives, purify them and struggle hard. After some years of hard, incessant struggle, fifty actions will become unselfish. A good time will come when all your actions, one hundred percent, will be purely unselfish. The time will not be very far if you keep the ideal before you daily and struggle hard to reach it, and if you are sincere and earnest in your purpose.

You will have to become a karma yogi if you want to experience final beatitude. Everybody will come to this state, if not now, maybe after several hundreds of births. But the question is, why not now? Cut short the cycle and enjoy supreme bliss right now in this very second, in this very birth. This is wisdom.

Ignorant people say that one cannot work without any motive. It is a great pity that they have not understood the essence and truth of karma yoga. Their minds are clouded and saturated with fantastic desires and selfishness. They cannot grasp the underlying truth of karma yoga. They judge others

Page 7: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 5 Mar/Apr 2014

from their own standpoint. Their minds and brains have been so hardened that they cannot vibrate properly to understand what a motiveless action is.

When the thought of doing good becomes part and parcel of one’s very being, then one will not entertain the least motive. One will take immense delight in serving others, in doing good to others. There is a peculiar joy and bliss in the practice of vigorous karma yoga. The karma yogi gets inner spiritual strength and power by performing selfless and motiveless actions.

If you find it difficult to work without any motive, have one strong motive for freedom when you work. This will not bind you. This will destroy all the other lower selfish motives and will eventually die by itself, just as the stick used in burning a dead body burns the dead body and is itself consumed in the end. The joy of a developed karma yogi is really unbounded. Words cannot adequately describe his exalted state and inward happiness.

Look at the stupendous and magnanimous work turned out by Lord Buddha, Sri Shankara and other such karma yogis. Their names are still remembered. The whole world worships them with reverence. Can you attribute an iota of selfish motive to their actions? They lived for rendering service to others.

Nature dispenses the fruit of actions according to the motive. If the motive is pure, you will get divine grace and purity of mind. If the motive is impure, if you expect fruit for your actions, you will have to return to this world to reap those fruits. You will have to take birth again and continue to perform virtuous and vicious actions through the force of attraction and repulsion. You will be entrapped in the never-ending wheel of birth and death.

What is the object in karma yoga or seva? By doing service, you purify your heart. Egoism, hatred, jealousy and the idea of superiority vanish.

Page 8: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Humility, pure love, sympathy, tolerance, and mercy are developed. The sense of separateness is annihilated. You get a broad outlook of life. Eventually, knowledge of the Self is attained.

Real spiritual progress starts with selfless service. Sustained practice of seva prepares the mind for the reception of light and knowledge. Every good deed is a grain of seed for eternal life. If you can remove selfishness from your nature, half of your spiritual sadhana is over. Therefore, do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, to all the people you can, in every place you can, at all the times you can, with all the zeal, strength, love and interest you can, as long as ever you can. Your nature must be to do good. Doing good and bringing happiness to others brings goodness and happiness to you. A special power comes from the divine source to those who have a pure and steady love of humanity. The more you spend your energy in elevating and serving others, the more divine energy will flow into you.

The path of karma yoga, which eventually leads to attainment of the infinite bliss of the Self, cannot be futile. Every action brings about an immediate purification of the heart. You do not lose anything in karma yoga. Even if you do a little service to the country, society or to suffering individuals, it has its own advantages and benefits. It prepares the antah karana, inner instrument, for the reception of knowledge of atman. The samskaras or

impressions of these good actions become embedded in your subconscious mind and their force will propel you to do some more good actions. Think how best you can utilise your energy, your intellect, your education, your wealth, your strength or anything you possess, for the betterment of others. When you die, only your actions, good and bad, will follow you. You live in vain if you do not have a generous heart.

Be a little more patient, a little more forgiving, a little more charitable, a little more loving, and a little more devoted to service. Bring solace where there is affliction, strength when there is weakness, light where there is darkness, hope where there is despair. Understand the suffering of others and be ever ready to help them. The spirit of service must deeply enter into your very bones, cells, tissues and nerves. The reward is invaluable. Practice and feel the cosmic expansion and infinite ananda. Tall tales and idle gossip will not do. Develop enthusiasm. Be fiery in the spirit of service.

One who ignores his own pleasures and comforts and always tries to help others is really an advanced student in the path of spirituality. He carries the master key to unlock the realms of spiritual bliss. Selfless service will reveal to you the identity of humanity. It will take you to the door of intuition. Identify yourself with all, love all, and constantly remind yourself of your essential divine nature. One can conquer the whole world through love, humility and service. Feel that you are one with the whole universe. The whole world is bound to work with one who feels one with the world.

NecessityofSelflessServiceSwami Satyananda Saraswati

Work which you do free of charge is called nishkam seva. Why is selfless service necessary? It is necessary to clean the rajo and tamo guna of the mind. It is necessary for self-transformation. Nishkam seva, selfless work, is like detergent. Nishkam seva doesn't just mean work, you should have a feeling for it in your heart. You are living in India. If you visit forty odd houses, what you will come across is scarcity, death, suffering, poverty, darkness and dejection. There is nothing else. As an exception you may come across a house where it is different, but for millions of people the state of affairs is abysmal. They have no shelter, no food, no place to cook, no toilet, not even water to drink.

What have you done for such people? You are wasting your time if you just grapple and wrestle with your own mind twenty-four hours a day. You box with it, you give it the slip. In your combat with

Swami Satyananda – the embodiment of selfless service

Page 11: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

the mind sometimes you fall, sometimes the mind falls, but nobody can attain a decisive victory. Sometimes you win, sometimes the mind wins. The head and the tail win equally, half and half, and the wrestling ends in quits. In the evening you are fagged out. You begin to moan with a headache and take a tranquillizer or open a bottle. Some opt to go to a temple for respite. Some choose to go to a discotheque to refresh themselves. Some decide on a session of yoga nidra and play a tape.

Nobody thinks of going to the house of a poor man and lighting a lamp. Nobody thinks of visiting the have-nots. If a child is born in a poor family, at least go and give the child a crib. When a child is born in your own family you immediately think of a crib and there are elaborate preparations in anticipation. But when there is a newborn in someone else's family all you do is give good wishes and greetings. If you give good wishes and greetings to someone who is born today, that will not help to give him a crib. Give him a warm sweater, some tonic for the mother and some money. Go to his house. This is a practical sadhana I am giving you.

The mind is a minute fraction of the unfathomable Brahman. Nobody should misbehave with it. The mind has a vulnerability, a weakness. If you think of the misery and misfortune of others, the mind melts, it sloughs off its hard crust. Suppose you have 20,000 rupees and the thought comes to your mind, ‘let me help the poor with this money’. If you actually do something to help the poor, that day your mind will be very pleased, very peaceful. You will feel so peaceful that

Page 12: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 10 Mar/Apr 2014

you will not be able to express it in words. If you want to befriend your mind, listen to me. Treat the whole world as your family and reach out to as many people as you can.

Live for othersI have fulfilled my karma, my destiny. I have done everything within my capacity that had to be done. There is nothing more left to do. A canister with the capacity to hold 20 kilos of ghee can only contain 20 kilos of ghee, no more. If you try to fill it up with more ghee, it will spill over. I am in the same state now. You evolve yourself according to your own personality. While evolving yourself, however, remember this – a man's life is for others. A man who lives only for himself is not a human or even an animal. Have you ever seen a hen eating another hen? You live for yourself, earn for yourself and enjoy your earnings for yourself. This is not the sign of a human being.

Man has bound himself with the chord of selfishness. Whether or not you can do something about it is a different matter. I understand your limitations, but consider, when the bridge to Lanka was being built for Lord Rama's army, didn't the squirrel make a humble contribution? She would pick up a little sand and drop it on the bridge under construction. The bridge could not have been built with the sand she brought, but look at her bhakti, devotion and dedication to the Lord's work. That is the most important thing.

The intensity of feeling within you is all that matters. You may not be a millionaire or a billionaire, but you can still serve by some means other than money. You can serve through physical work, bhakti, genuine emotion, compassion. Suppose you are a poet, a story writer or an artist working with the media. You can inspire people, you can set them thinking altruistically. Suppose you are a leader, the head of a panchayat. You set the rules for

Page 13: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

the village, so tell the people that they should not live for themselves but for others.

Wheat and other food crops sprout for others. Look around and you will see that everything lives, thrives and grows for others. It is only man who lives selfishly for himself. He earns only for his own children and keeps clinging to them selfishly. Does a pumpkin say, “I am only for cobblers! I am only for brahmins!”? Does it ever say that it won't go to a brahmin or that only a Muslim can cut it up? No! Whoever lives for others is dedicated to others. One who is selfless is selfless towards one and all. One who is charitable is charitable towards one and all. One who is a well-wisher is a well-wisher to all, not only to Muslims, brahmins, shudras, kshatriyas, vaishyas or widows, he lives for one and all without exception.

Feel the pain of othersMy Guru believed that those who think well of others have tender hearts. One who thinks ill of others cannot have a soft heart. One who thinks ill of others has a hard heart which needs to be pounded. Prakriti breaks hard-core hearts. Your heart should be so soft, so tender, so sensitive, that it should immediately respond to the cries of agony and pain from others. You should be able to feel the pain of

Satsang outside Tribhuvan at Rikhiapeeth, 2006

other people, to feel the tragedy in another's life. Before you are able to experience Brahman or the Lord, to see the light or experience enlightenment, you must be able to feel the pain and agony of another person. If you can't feel or respond to another's agony mentally, it means you cannot attain peace, you cannot see the light. Such a compassionate and sensitive heart which feels and responds to another's pain attains knowledge effortlessly. The more distant and unaffected you are from the suffering and distress of others, the further Brahman will be from you. God, Shiva, Rama, Devi, all will be beyond your reach.

You should be tender and sensitive towards the misery of others. Your hearts should immediately respond; compassion should flow from you. Your heart should go out to all agonized people. You should experience other people's sorrow and suffering as your own. Only such tender hearts can feel and experience the paramatma. Those who are unmoved and insensitive to the feelings of others are unworthy to be called human. They are animals. They share the four instincts of food, sleep, sex and fear with the animals and their lives rotate around them. People eat and sleep, animals also eat and sleep. People procreate and so do animals, people get frightened and so do animals. What is the difference between people and animals?

The best philosophyWe humans confine our feelings within our family bonds. There is a strong sense of discrimination and differentiation in us, like 'mine' and 'yours'. We have a strong feeling that 'this is mine' and 'that is yours'. The sum and substance of spiritual life, the best teaching of Vedanta is atmabhava. The word atmabhava means complete sympathy for others like me. It means to feel the pain and distress of others as if it were your own, to feel the poverty, sickness and calamities of others as your own. This is the best philosophy of Vedanta.

To learn, you have to first empty yourself. Even if you knoweverything, you have to think that ‘I don’t know anything’.

– Swami Satyasangananda Saraswati

The Path of ServiceSwami Niranjanananda Saraswati

When it comes to service, whom do we serve? Not our neighbour who lives next door in a house or a flat. We serve the have-nots, the downtrodden, the weak and the poor, not because society views them as poor, weak and helpless, but because they are part of the human family. If there are three children in your family and the eldest is healthy and strong, the youngest is bright and brilliant, and the middle one is lame, blind, weak and sick, which one will you care for the most? Not the strong one or the bright and brilliant one. The one who is weak and sick will be the recipient of your care.

Similarly, in our society, it is the duty of those people who have, to help those who are categorised as have-nots. Not only that, it is the have-nots who are the architects of society. We, the intellectuals, the degree holders, the city dwellers, enjoy the fruits of the labour of people who have nothing. You may be rich, you may have a medical degree or an engineering degree, but your home and all the things that decorate it have been made by those who are not intellectuals

or degree holders. Without them we would not be able to survive, we would have no beautiful objects to appreciate. A doctor could not have constructed the Taj Mahal. An architect can only design a house, he cannot lay it brick by brick.

So, it is the poor who are the architects of society. Without them the middle and upper classes would be unable to survive. There would be chaos. Yet it is those people whom we ignore, whom we reject. We say that they are poor, that they don't know how to live or have anything to wear. This is a very basic misconception that we all carry in our minds.

Who maintains our gardens? Who maintains our towns and cities? Who constructs our houses? Who makes the beautiful sculptures with which we decorate our homes? Who makes all the other paraphernalia and equipment and keeps nothing for themselves? Who works in the fields and farms to make sure that we have food to eat everyday? We don't give them anything to eat. We try to educate them and by doing so we make them weak, because education gives birth to a thousand more ambitions in their lives.

We have all been to Rikhia. Just imagine if the people there were to go to university and obtain their Masters of Business Administration. What would happen to them? They would have many ambitions that they would be unable to fulfil. Then there

would be chaos, pain, depression and suicide. There would be absolute and total social anarchy. But if we can take care of them, by making sure that their basic needs are fulfilled, that there is no absence of basic facilities in their lives, they can become better architects of human society.

Service to ensure the survival of humanityWe, the so-called intellectuals and administrators of society, simply enjoy the fruits of their labour; we

Page 17: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 15 Mar/Apr 2014

don't contribute anything to the betterment of human civilization. The poor know more about the natural arts and sciences than we do. Service to them is service to the architects of humanity. They may be poor from a social viewpoint; they may come in the category of have-nots according to the social ladder and systems that we have created. But we have created all these ladders to feed our own egos, so that we can always be on top and feel proud of it, so that we can say we belong to the elite group. But we

forget one point, that without the poor we would not have the skills to survive.

It is for this reason that Paramahansaji has shown the path of service. He knows that the affluent in society are never going to take care of the poor. He has said this many times. Even this year, he instructed the sannyasins that when the time comes, when they have exhausted their own desires, samskaras and karmas, they should move out of the ashrams, cities and towns and go to remote areas where they can help people to just survive. He gave this clear guideline to all the sannyasins who came to Sita Kalyanam, who are the acharyas of different traditions.

Paramahansaji has always maintained that if fires are raging outside your house and you are sitting in an air-conditioned room, you can't say that the air-conditioned room will not be affected by the fires that are coming closer and closer. One day they will burn your air-conditioned home as well. History has many examples. The architects of society are not going to keep quiet. They want somebody to provide them with the basic necessities of life. Governments cannot provide them with social security. It is all right to provide social security for small numbers of people, but how can you provide social security to a population of 900 million?

Page 18: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

So, even the social and political concepts of society are going to undergo changes in the future, just as has happened in the past. Prior to democracy there was a monarchy. The monarchy had its own problems and democracy has its own problems. Prior to the monarchy there were other systems: autocratic, semi-autocratic, semi-democratic. Society is always experimenting to find the right balance. Socialism, communism and democracy all emerged from autocratic forms of government, and even they are changing all the time.

Learning to understand the needs of othersNo government or political ideology is the right one. The only ideology that can be considered as appropriate for the time is one which provides a basic form of subsistence, which can teach the basic norms of survival to each member of human society. If this cannot be done, the world cannot be saved. There will be wars, there will be destruction and a

great portion of humanity may be wiped out. Humanity will never know an era of peace until we are able to look after others. This is not only a thought. A continuous effort has to be made to

improve the way we serve others, and Paramahansaji is giving us this

opportunity to understand other people's needs.

So, these are the two dimensions of Paramahansaji's teachings – through yoga, water the roots of life, the soul, so the tree that is supported by the roots becomes strong, green, flowery and fruity, and through seva, ensure the continuity of human civilization.

Guru SevaSwami Satyasangananda Saraswati

Guru seva has often been defined as serving the Guru selflessly in an effort to purify the mind of its gross desires. Although this interpretation conveys some idea of the relevance of Guru seva in spiritual life, it is incomplete. The underlying importance and effect of Guru seva is far more scientific, as it deals directly with the energy flows in your body.

Existence is energy, the movement of energy in so many ways and so many forms. Energy is never

static, it is in constant motion. If this energy is not allowed to flow harmoniously, it will create conflict. If its path is obstructed, it will cause tension. If it is not balanced, channelled and directed properly, it will dissipate and wear you out. Within you there exists a fountain of energy bursting to express itself. It is a part of this energy which causes you to think, to act, to feel, to do. But there is a dormant potential of energy which begins to manifest itself during the course of your natural evolution. This energy is called the higher energy, and represents your total potential.

When this energy awakens and builds up in you, it is as if the walls of a dam have broken and the total volume of water gushes into the ocean. If the path is clear, the force of the water will not do any serious damage. But if there are houses and factories and people, they will simply be destroyed by the outburst. In the same way, when the energy begins to manifest itself, it should

Page 21: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

always be allowed to flow harmoniously in order to avoid conflicts, tension and serious damage to yourself. If your energy can function harmoniously, then you will feel bliss, but if it is in conflict, if it is antagonistic to itself, then you feel miserable. All misery means that your energy is in conflict and all happiness means that your energy is in harmony.

We have to first of all accept that the awakening of this energy can manifest in any person at any time. However, this awakening is not a sudden process. It is gradual and in many stages. In fact, the reasons why you search for a Guru or visit an ashram are because the energy is already awakening in you. The superficial or more tangible reasons, such as illness, mental crises, despair, dejection, failure in marriage or other relationships, are just an excuse. They are the outward manifestations of this internal process that has begun inside you.

Even when you first come in contact with a Guru or any spiritual master, a similar happening takes place. There is a spontaneous transference, build-up and explosion of energy within you. You may not be aware that this is happening, but it is undoubtedly taking place. This contact with the Guru is so powerful that it can occur just by seeing his photograph or reading his book. You do not need to meet him personally in flesh and blood. You can even receive the energy psychically through dream or thought transmissions, without ever knowing it.

Regardless of how this energy begins to take shape and manifest, you will find a gradual metamorphosis and transformation of your personality. What is most surprising,

Shodashi 2009, sannyasins in Guru seva

Page 22: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 20 Mar/Apr 2014

however, is that this transformation is not always for the better or to your advantage, and therefore you are alarmed. If you are a person with deep-rooted guilts and complexes they will begin to manifest in you and you will develop neurosis and psychosis to many things, perhaps even to whatever attracted and appealed to you earlier. If you have suppressed a part of your personality which you did not like, it will again rear its ugly head.

Apart from your conscious thoughts, you also have a dimension of your personality which is related to subconscious and unconscious thoughts. Very often these thoughts remain unexpressed and unmanifested. You are not even aware of their existence. But when the energy begins to awaken, they begin to expose themselves, and if they are not pleasant or harmonious, they create conflict and tension in your life. You can manage the conscious, but with an explosion of the unconscious there is insecurity. You will not be able to

manage it.However, there are some

people who are able to cope with this situation better than others because to begin with they had been leading a more harmonious life and were more or less free of complexes, guilts and taboos. Therefore, their experiences are those of happiness, creativity, bliss and optimism, as opposed to those who had suppressions and guilt.

In order to understand what I am saying, you have to look at this in greater detail. You have to realise The joy of giving, Yajnashala 2007

Page 23: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 21 Mar/Apr 2014

that the energy generated in you assumes the form of your personality which is the most prominent. On account of suppressions, certain qualities of your personality become stronger and stronger over the years. When you have the awakening of any energy, naturally the energy is spontaneously drawn to that channel and expresses itself through that part of your personality.

At that stage, you are no longer in control. There is an upsurge within you, and you cannot be the controller or the one to pull the strings. It is no longer in your hands. The energy will manifest and take the form of whatever you have strongly suppressed, or the strongest characteristic of your psyche. If you have anger, guilt, frustration, jealousy, fear, insecurity and passions, your energy will begin to flow in that direction. But if you have a balanced personality, an equipoised attitude to life and its events, then the energy will manifest positively and become constructive rather than destructive.

I shall illustrate this with a simple example. Electrical energy is first generated at the powerhouse or generating station. It is then channelled or directed to your house. When it reaches your home, it is further broken up and directed to different outlets, the refrigerator, the television, the light bulbs, etc. Every outlet receives as much electrical energy as required. The television set would require more energy than the electric bulb and therefore there is a spontaneous transmission of more energy to that socket. You safeguard that socket with a stronger fuse and better plugs. If there is any obstruction in the flow of the electricity, the fuse will blow or the television set will break down.

Page 24: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 22 Mar/Apr 2014

In the same way, your body is a powerhouse which is continuously creating energy. This energy flows towards any outlet that is available and plugs into it. The stronger outlets draw the greater quantities of energy and the weaker ones have lesser energy. Therefore, this energy has to be directed and used constructively, otherwise it will create explosions in your personality.

This is the situation that exists as far as human

beings are concerned. This is why there is ugliness and misery. Happiness and beauty can come only when your life energy is relaxed, unsuppressed, uninhibited, integrated and has easy movement. Then every situation of life becomes joyous. Then neither husband, child, parents, nor job can be a source of pain and unhappiness. Then you achieve a total balance.

Otherwise, even amidst all the wealth, status and comfort you will feel restlessness, dissatisfaction and inner turmoil. You will feel physically worn out and mentally depressed. You will feel stifled in your environment and sense a desire to run away from the present situation and seek shelter elsewhere. Fears and anxieties will develop and you begin to feel an inability to cope with life.

The problem lies not so much in generating the energy, but in the direction, channelling and expression of that energy. You are constantly creating new energies. That is what is meant by life, the ability to go on creating the life force. This is the paradox. You go on creating energy, and you don't know how to utilise it creatively. The moment this energy or force is not

A channel for Guru

Page 25: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

created you feel ill, but when it is created you again feel ill. The first illness is that of weakness, and the second illness is of energy that has become a burden to you. You are not able to harmonise it, to make it creative and balanced.

Therefore, in order to understand and eliminate our problems, we have to find a method to balance this energy, to channel it to the proper outlets and to allow it to express itself constructively. This is where the Guru and the practice of Guru seva play an important part in your life.

When you first come in contact with the Guru, there is a break-up and re-orientation of your energy cycle. You may not recognise the symptoms, but transformation has begun to take place. The energy is being broken up and restructured. Very often when you meet the Guru, you become emotional and depressed. You may become excessively elated and dance with joy or, on the other hand, you may feel absolutely negative.

The meeting with the Guru serves as a detonator. Everything that is in you comes surging to the surface. The experience that you have is an outcome of the structure of your psyche and is related to your samskaras and archetypes. Many times these samskaras and archetypes are not known to you, and therefore you are aghast at the feelings a meeting with the Guru brings out. I have seen the most die-hard and cynical people burst into tears and cry like children in front of the Guru. These people are amazed at their reactions, for it is totally against the idea they hold of themselves. They can't understand it. What actually is happening is that the awakening which carried you to the Guru is rejuvenated and reinforced by the contact with him. His presence activates and sparks off a reinforced awakening, and your inner personality is expressed. The Guru acts as a mirror, your spirit is reflected in that mirror, and unknowingly you see yourself.

Now with this first contact with the Guru, an inner metamorphosis begins to take place. Everything begins to change and for most people, life can never be the same again. More awakenings are bound to take place and more energy is bound to

Page 26: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 24 Mar/Apr 2014

be generated. It is for that you have to equip yourself, and it is at this point that Guru seva plays an important, decisive role.

When you do Guru seva at the Guru's ashram, in actual fact you are balancing the energy flows in your body and channelling them to areas of maximum advantage. The Guru is a symbol of selflessness. His goal is the upliftment and further evolution of human consciousness, a purely selfless goal. It is for the achievement of that end that he is amongst us today. And in his presence and by the purity of his motives, we are compelled to perform selfless acts. Moreover, the environment of an ashram is built on the solid foundation of selfless service. There is no place for those with vested interests. They simply will not survive in such an atmosphere and soon leave of their own accord.

So, when you visit the ashram, no matter what your problem is, no matter what difficulty you are undergoing, it is imperative that you plunge into Guru seva. This act of Guru seva balances the flow of energy in your body and directs energy to the higher centres in you. In time, the higher centres are activated and begin to function, and you find that you are becoming more creative, intuitive and in harmony with yourself. What had gone wrong in the first place was that your energy had awakened, but due to severe blocks in your personality and mental conditioning,

Flow of creative energy through Guru seva

Page 27: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

Aradhana Yoga of the heart 25 Mar/Apr 2014

its flow to the higher centres was obstructed and therefore expressed itself negatively.

However, when you come to the ashram and serve the Guru and work for him, you are unconsciously clearing the path and allowing the energy to proceed on to the higher and more potential centres. As you remain in the ashram and work hard, you find a total transformation in yourself. You feel better, you think with greater clarity and accuracy, in fact, you can once again look at life squarely. Then, when you return home, you are easily able to adapt to your surroundings once again, and you are aware of many things which had not occurred to you earlier.

The principle behind Guru seva is selfless work, work without attachment or interest in the rewards. The reason why this practice works so efficiently in balancing your energy is that, due to your selfless motives, your ego is not involved and you are able to bypass your conflicts and tensions without any direct confrontation. They may still be there, but they no longer affect you because your energy is being diverted elsewhere.

Guru seva has to be practised in the ashram. It cannot be done at your home. The environment of the ashram is conducive to the growth of higher awareness, and this allows your energy to flow unhindered. If you remain in your own environment, you will find it extremely difficult to balance the energies. It is not that the situation where you live is bad or unhealthy, it is just that at that particular time you are not able to cope. Any situation or event will spark off a negative reaction. With the people who are known to you intimately, you are seldom able to rise above hatred, jealousy, anger and other negative qualities. However, in the ashram it is

a different situation. Everyone there is trying to develop their internal strength, and you are inspired by the spirit of karma yoga that pervades the atmosphere. Moreover, the positive vibrations of so many spiritual people also help to balance your energy.

Gradually, in time this attitude towards Guru seva becomes a part of your personality. It becomes a part of your nature, and you do not have to make any effort at all. You approach all life's situations with the same ease and equanimity. The ups and downs of life do not shatter or overwhelm you. You can handle them. It is then that you can go back to your home and assume your role as a mother, daughter, husband or son.

Awakening of energy has to be handled properly and systematically. There is no point in becoming oversensitive and emotional or negative. Ashram life, simple living, proper diet, karma yoga and the Guru's positive energy are so important for you at that time. It is the only cure that can put you back on your feet. No pills, no psychiatrist, no doctor can help you the way a month, or maybe more, doing Guru seva at the ashram can help you.

Christmas at RikhiapeethChristmas was celebrated in the true Rikhia spirit of Serve, Love and Give. In remembrance of the birth of Jesus, who just like our beloved Sri Swamiji came to earth to uplift mankind with compassion and love, a sparkling program filled with song, dance, laughter and giving of prasad was offered on Christmas Eve. Christmas songs were sung in different languages as an offering of devotees and guests from around the world. Dancing batuks of Rikhiapeeth spread Christmas joy to all in a bouncy rock song and the kanyas shared inspiration and grace in a brand new Jingle Bell Rock dance. Of course Santa Claus came, and Christmas prasad was given to all, to the sound of a spirited Hallelujah kirtan.

On Christmas Day, prasad was given to five hundred villagers and three hundred school children of surrounding villages of Rikhia panchayat. Many ashram guests had the privilege to join in the distribution which was held at the Samadhi Sthal. The powerful Maha Rudri aradhana dedicated to our beloved Paramahansa Satyananda was performed by pandits from Varanasi as the distribution took place.

Rikhia is UniqueSatsang by Swami Satyasangananda Saraswati

Yoga Purnima Day 5, Patanjali Ashram World Yoga EnclaveRikhiapeeth is unique in many ways. First of all it is a village ashram. It is not situated in a metropolitan city, it is not even situated in a town or developed area. In fact this ashram is perhaps in one of the most remote and backward areas of India. You can’t get more backward than this. That is a unique feature of this ashram because most people think of having their ashrams in places which are easy to access or convenient for the functioning of the ashram.

Hardly anyone would think of having an ashram in a place that has none of the facilities of modern life. No roads to drive fancy cars on, no shops to buy fancy amenities, not even the possibility of getting any transport to take you back where you came from. That is a unique asset of this ashram because by bringing the ashram to this remote and backward area the entire place has evolved and been uplifted.

You will not find an ashram like Rikhiapeeth in any part of India or the rest of the world. It is modern yet has a traditional fragrance which advocates simple living and high thinking. Despite its modernity it blends in beautifully with the rural surroundings because it is not run by the sannyasins, but by the little children of Rikhia.

These illiterate children who are the have-nots of society, the rejects of society, nobody would even turn and give them a second glance, they conduct all the activities of Rikhia ashram with grace, dignity, confidence, elegance and poise. Are they not impressive? They run the show here. They are not the children of affluent parents. Their parents are all riksha and thela pullers, the labor

Page 36: ARADHANA Yoga of the heart doctrine of a selfless or nishkama karma yogi ... Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart Mar/Apr 2014. Aradhana Yoga of the heart . Aradhana Yoga of the

class. Sri Swamji called them the load bearers of society! You know load bearers? If they decide to stay at home there will be no one to pick up your garbage, clean your toilets, or do the hundred and one menial tasks that you people can never even think of doing.

Sometimes they may not even have food to eat, because theirs is a hand to mouth existence. Of course that's not the situation now, because of the ashram. But that was the Rikhia which Swamiji entered, when they had no food to eat, no clothes to wear. They never went to school, they did not even comb their hair, or brush their teeth or have a bath. They were so unkempt and dull. These are the same children you see today who have become a role model for children from affluent homes throughout the world.

You do not have to go anywhere to witness Guru’s grace. You just have to come to Rikhia. Although one should never seek proof of Guru’s grace. It is wrong and foolish to ask for proof of Guru’s grace because the grace is all around, you only have to have the eyes to see, that's all. If you don't have the eyes to see, that doesn't mean the grace is not there. A blind man cannot see the sun, no matter how hard he may try. But if you really want proof of Guru’s grace then you can find it at Rikhiapeeth. Purity and innocence is a most potent medium for Guru’s grace to manifest and although these children may come from impoverished homes, having no clothes to wear or food to eat, they have purity and innocence in abundance. Perhaps that is why one fine day Sri Swamiji walked into their lives and everything changed for them. The dark bleak future became one of hope and possibilities and now they can dare to dream.

On this auspicious day of Sri Swamijis birthday, the parents of these little children have been invited to receive a special gift, as they did in the past when Sri Swamiji was here. Ordinary people expect gifts on their birthday. If they don't get anything, they are disappointed. But the very special people, the extraordinary people, like Swami Satyananda never think about receiving, they only think about giving. That is what he advocated all his life and urged us to learn to give. In keeping with that tradition of Serve, Love and Give started by him at Rikhiapeeth, today everybody in Rikhia is getting a gift on behalf of Sri Swamiji.

Sri Swamiji Birthday CelebrationsSatsang by Swami Niranjanananda SaraswatiYoga Purnima Day 5, Samadhi Sthal

Let me tell you that along with Sri Swamiji, Rikhiapeeth is also celebrating its 24th birthday. Yes, Rikhiapeeth has come of age. It is a 24-year-old now. This year is the 24th birthday of Rikhiapeeth as well, because it came up with the Sat Chandi Mahayajna. So it is befitting that along with Sri Swamiji we are also celebrating the birth of his creation Rikhiapeeth.

During this Sat Chandi Mahayajna and Yoga Purnima, Rikhiapeeth has established its song and a slogan. The song is “Serve, Love, Give”. And the slogan of Rikhiapeeth is “Give Bhakti a Chance”. So how do you like the song and the slogan? In 2015 we will commemorate the silver jubilee of Rikhiapeeth by showcasing the life of Swami Satyananda after he came to Rikhia

and present his teachings to all of you. Please watch out for the details of this sacred event and also be ready to join in the grand preparations.

On this occasion, on behalf of each and everyone, a heartfelt Namo Narayan to Swami Satsangi as well. Without her this wonderful creation of Sri Swamiji would not have been possible. She definitely deserves our thanks from many angles. Firstly, without any diversion, without any distortion, without any deviation, she has maintained herself true to the mandate of Sri Swamiji. That is something that each sannyasin and disciple must notice, register, imbibe, and try to live. Try to live as she has lived, with the focus of her goal in mind.

Secondly, she is the hero and mother of thousands of children, kanyas and batuks. Thirdly, she is a radiant inspiration to womankind all over the world. That is very rare, and human history is the witness to that. It is very rare for a woman to become an inspiration for humanity. Those who have been in the past, have lived a life of sacrifice, devotion, dedication and samarpan. They have lived the life with total awareness fused on their aradhya. Swami Satsangi is the modern example of all those virtues and qualities we have seen and read about in the history of woman saints who have been inspirers of humankind.

And lastly, because she is going to cut the cake so we can have the prasad of Sri Swamiji’s birthday! Happy Birthday Swamiji!!

Aradhana gift for Guru17th December 2013 – 11th January 2014

On Yoga Purnima, 17th December the auspicious birth of Paramahansa Satyananda was celebrated at Rikhiapeeth. Immediately following this from the 18th

December 2013 to 11th January 2014, Peethadhishwari of Rikhiapeeth Swami Satyasangananda Saraswati took a sankalpa to perform aradhanas at the Samadhi Sthal of Paramahansa Satyananda, as a birthday gift to Sri Swamiji.

From the 18th to 31st December the Maha Rudri Path was conducted. This is one of the most powerful, ancient and traditional forms of Shiva worship, with mantras eulogising the omnipotence and omnipresence of Shiva.

Performed by the proficient pandits from Varanasi, the Rudri Path was chanted 121 times, while abhishek of the Divya Lingam was performed. This path invoked the grace and blessings of Shiva whose divine presence is now even stronger at Rikhiapeeth since the inauguration of the new Shivalaya at the Samadhi Sthal.

The Purnahuti of the Maha Rudri Path was conducted on 31st December, along with distribution of yajna prasad to 500 villagers and 400 schoolchildren from villages surrounding Rikhia panchayat.

Also on this day, the three year sankalpa which began with daily Lalita Sahasranaam havan in 2011, and continued with the Ram Naam

Sahasranaam havan in 2012-2013, ended with special ceremonies.

On the 1st January 2014 the New Year was celebrated with the chanting of Hanuman Chalisa 108 times. Hanuman is the son of the God of the wind, and as the wind is constantly changing, this aradhana gave strength and hope to all New Year’s resolutions for betterment and transformation.

From the 3rd to 11th January a profound Sri Vidya Puja was conducted by Swami Satyasangananda and nine pandits from Varanasi in worship of Bhagavati Devi, the supreme Shakti that creates, sustains and destroys the entire universe. The chanting of one puruscharan of the Sri Suktam, an ancient text in praise of the divine mother, made this aradhana a beautiful tribute to Swami Satyananda who had always worshipped the divine mother with the utmost devotion and reverence here at his Tapobhumi.

The culminating Purnahuti on the 11th January which coincided with Swami Niranjanananda’s sannyas diwas was conducted with the worship and aarti of the Sri Yantra and Divya Lingam. This 25 day aradhana was concluded with a Rudri and Sri Suktam havan that consolidated the feeling of peace, plenty and prosperity that pervaded this entire aradhana.

All these worships were dedicated to Paramahansa Satyananda so that all of his sankalpas may be fulfilled. This provided a way to align and connect with Sri Swamiji’s vision for humanity which continues to flourish, grow and be lived here at Rikhiapeeth.
