Registration ErrorAn error has been found with a Purebred horse that has been registered with the incorrect prefix. As required under the NZAHBS Rules, the registration certificate has been recalled to enable the NZAHBS Council to correctly name the horse as “DTA Sanadik’s Sensation (IIU)”.

Suspension LiftedCouncil advise that the issues surrounding the suspension of Eman (Esstashan (DE) x Kalima (DE)) have been resolved and the stallion is now registered with the NZAHBS.

Show Gradings 2014/2015 AA - National Arabian Championships (AAHC)A - South Island Championships (Canterbury AHC)A - North Island Championships (Auckland AHC)A - Canterbury A&P ShowA - Taranaki Arabian Premier Show (Taranaki AHC)

Show Rules Due to time constraints a full review of the current “NZAHBS Rules for Judging and Showing Arabian Horses” was not able to be completed in time for the start of the 2014/2015 show season and has been deferred to next season. The increase in whip length for halter classes as recommended to the 2014 AGM to bring in line with the AHSA and RAS has been implemented for the 2015/2015 season as follows:“Whip Length: Whip used in halter classes must not exceed 145cm from handle to end of the tail. For ridden/performance classes, whips must not exceed 76cm.”

Tauranga A&P ShowAre offering an Arabian Section (inhand and ridden) at their show to be held on 17 January 2015. Anyone willing to help prior to, or on show day is asked to contact Sue McDonald, tel: 07 544 3172 or email: [email protected].

Annual General Meeting 2015 The 2015 AGM will be hosted by the Taranaki Arabian Horse Club. Date and details TBC.

Rules & RegulationsA considerable amount of time has been spent on updating the Regulations at the last two Council meetings. The updated 2014 Regulations will be available to download off the website once the final changes have been approved by Council. There are still a few items under discussion which will be updated once finalised. The following changes have been made to Artificial Insemination (AI) Permit requirements (updated forms will be available soon): • AI Permits for mares and stallions that are both

resident and registered in New Zealand will no longer be required. They will be treated the same way as if by natural service – ie the insemination date will be recorded on the form and the stallion owner will need to provide a signed service certificate to the mare owner.

• AI Permits will only be required if semen is being imported from a stallion registered and resident in another WAHO registry country to be used with a NZ registered mare.

• The annual Stallion Return will be updated and include space to record number of straws of semen stored.

ArabianzFeedback received from members about the printed August Arabianz magazine was very positive. Council put in place a proposed plan for the electronic and A5 printed Arabianz magazine for the coming year (refer to page 7). An A4 printed Year Book will be produced annually post-AGM and will include coverage of Showing and Endurance (North Island, South Island & Nationals), Annual Award recipients, stallions etc. The proposed hard copy printing can only go ahead if the costs are covered by advertisers.

Stud DirectoryThe Stud Directory will continue as an electronic directory. Update forms will be sent annually to all members with the December mailout.

Arabian Judges SeminarCouncil will announce after the December meeting which weekends during Winter 2015 will be set aside for seminars to update existing and educate those potential judges that have expressed interest in becoming Arabian Judges. Further details will be released once finalised.

Next Council Meeting Will be held on 3 December 2014 in Christchurch. If you wish to have any matters raised at this meeting, please ensure that they are submitted to the Office at least 14 days out from the meeting.

Endurance has come under the spot light after just 23 percent of the field completed the 160km ride at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in France.

It's left New Zealand's chef d'equipe Tony Parsons more than just a little disillusioned and disappointed. None of the Kiwi five completed the ride. Conditions were horrendous, with one horse dying and a number of injuries incurred.

But Parsons is adamant his crew were well prepared for the ride. “I think we were in a pretty good place when we arrived at the venue,” he said. “This is not like a cross country where you can go and walk the course. We were told very clearly at all the chef d'equipe meetings that the state of the track was good, despite the weather.” While just two small sections of the third loop were meant to be affected by surface water, it turned out that a large percentage of the course was mud. “If the ground jury/technical delegate had made it clear on the going and conditions, and had adjusted the riding time earlier, people would have approached it differently,” Parsons said. As it was, the time was adjusted after two loops when half the field were already out. “The damage was done by then,” he said. Parsons had heard that gold medal winning team Spain were lodging a complaint about the event. “If you have anything under 35 percent completing, there are questions about the conditions or the riding ability on the day – this just isn't what the sport is about,’’ he said. “There have been a lot of changes (to endurance) made at international level, with plenty of discussion and rule changes, but I feel we are no further ahead. I am disappointed and disillusioned about where the sport is at.”

However, Parsons was pleased with how the New Zealand riders rode. “They rode to the ideas we had,’’ he said. “I suppose you could argue that endurance is about riding the course, but if they had slowed down, they would have been outside the riding time.” The team had also worked well together. “A huge amount of resources has gone into this, and to come here and get a ride like that leaves me questioning whether we would do it again,” Parsons concluded.

Georgia Smith (Mangaweka)Horse: Glenmore VixenGrooms: Jenny Champion and Murray SmithResult: vetted out lame end of loop one

While the disappointment of being vetted out at the end of the first loop is a bitter pill to swallow, 18-year-old Georgia Smith was philosophical about her first experience at the world champs. “For me to make the team, and being the youngest rider, meant a lot,” she said. “A lot of hard work went into it all ... getting out at the first loop sucks!” However, the whole team experience had

by Diana Dobson (reprinted with kind permission of The Bulletin)

been amazing. “We'll take her home now and want to keep her for breeding,” she said of Vixen. The decision at the end of loop one came as a shock. “I thought we were ok when we presented, but then were called to represent,” the teen said. “She looked fine but they said she was lame. I was just gutted ... I didn't expect it at all.” The combination had represented at the initial trot up too. “It was a tough first loop,” she said.

Smith and her mother Andrea were among the first on the scene at an accident 13.6km into the loop which saw Costa Rican rider Claudia Romero Chacon and her horse Dorado hit a tree. The horse died instantly and the rider was trapped beneath the horse. It clearly shook Georgia, who with Andrea, had to ride for help. “She came careering past us out of control and yelling for help, and then we came around the corner and there they were,” Smith said. “That first loop was a whole lot tougher than I thought it would be. It was either really slippery or we were on tarseal. Vixen was keen and wanting to go. She handled all the other horses really well.”

Braden Cameron (Wellington)Horse: Karamea Krusader Grooms: Henrikus Swart, Mark Tylee, Wayne CameronResult: vetted out on metabolics, end of second loop after a represent

Braden Cameron is even hungrier to compete successfully at top level after a very tough World Equestrian Games. “I was very surprised at the condition of the track,” said Cameron, whose parents Wayne and Valerie Cameron were on hand to see their son compete. “It is the worst track I have ever ridden on – the depth of the mud on loop two made it so much harder for the horses.”

Krusader was 100 percent sound at the end of the second loop but was asked to represent when his heart rate didn't drop after trotting before the vet. “The going was just so tough going and he was so keen to run,” Cameron said. A groom at the 2010 WEG in Kentucky, Cameron said the start had been crazy with horses and riders flying by and taking big risks. “That fired him up and it was all a bit of an eye opener for us both I think,” he said.

As disappointed as he was, it was still a great experience.“It was great to be exposed to an event of this level and I will take a lot away with me,’’ Cameron said. “It was a great team but not a good result. There are certain things you just can't control. Seeing all these great horses was amazing, and I feel I have learnt so much – from the travel to looking after our horses, what went well and what we can work on.”

Susie Latta (Otago)Horse: TkiwaGrooms: Helen Graham, Logan Latta & Pauline KingResult: vetted out lame at the end of second loop after losing a shoe

In nearly 3000km of endurance riding, Susie Latta and Tkiwa had never been vetted out ... until the World Equestrian Games in France. “I can't believe we had to come to France to do it,” she said. “As a team we deserved better – we all worked so hard, but I guess it just wasn't to be.” However, she's very proud of what they have achieved, and hugely relieved her horse is heading home with her. “After seeing that accident out there, I am just happy she is here. Sometimes you make wrong choices, but not today, luck just wasn't on my side,” she said.

Latta said the team “nailed” the start of the epic ride, finding a small corner of the packed arena, keeping themselves safe and out of trouble. They were quickly separated after the start, and Latta ended up riding most of her race with Alison Higgins on Northwinds Apollo (owned by Chris King). “In that first loop, if you weren't scrambling up hills, you were in bogs – I just didn't think it would be that bad,’’ she said. “Tkiwa is a good stock horse, but I would never choose to ride her over some of what we rode on today.”

Andrea Smith (Mangaweka)Horse: Glenmore TariqGrooms: Brigitte Smith & Sue ReidResult: fell during loop three, breaking three ribs and was prevented from going further

Andrea Smith wonders whether she will ever do another endurance ride. Hopes were high that Smith and Glenmore Tariq (Max) would do really well at WEG, but instead she is nursing three broken ribs and wondering 'what if?’

While the going was horrendous, Max is a solid, strong horse who ploughs around on the hills at the Smith's farm. “He is as tough as, so it suited him,” she said. But riding was a challenge, Smith saying, the ground was impossible to read, and hidden beneath the bog were tree roots and big rocks. At 107km, Smith said Max was just eating the ground, drawing his way slowly through the field. When they came in at the end of loop three they were in 10th place – the leader had a big lead, but the bulk of those ahead of her were at a similar six hour mark. “He ate and drank really well and was set up to just pull his way up through the field,” she said. But 10km before that loop end, Max had stumbled and Smith, despite her best efforts, hit the track. “I hopped back on and passed another rider, but knew there was some damage. I wanted to get taped up and carry on,” she said. But the medics had other ideas and insisted she headed to hospital for a CT scan and blood test.

“I wish I hadn't gone looking for tape!’’ she said. “I didn't want an assessment, just tape so I could keep going. I know I could have ... I may have needed help to get on and off, but I would have ridden.”

To add insult to injury, stewards at the compulsory represent at the end of loop three vetted him out. “My strappers say they never even watched him trot out – the steward checked it was rider 121 and that was it,” she said. The result has probably cost the Smiths a whole lot of money. Their plan was always to sell Max in France. “He has never looked better, but not finishing the ride meant we didn't get as much as we had hoped for him,” Smith said. Max was sold the day after the ride to the UAE, but will stay in France for the time being. “He is better suited to European conditions than the desert.” Smith is confident the horse still has years of competition in him. “He's never been extended, so who knows what he is really capable of,” she said.

A deflated Smith said she is not sure if she will ever ride endurance again. “It was Russian roulette out there – it took a lot of the skill out and turned it to luck,” she said. However, it had been very special having her whole family there – Georgia riding, and husband Murray and daughter Brigitte grooming, and the support the team had received from Christophe Bogrand and his crew had been amazing.

Alison Higgins (Nelson)Horse: Northwinds Apollo (owned by Chris King)Grooms: Chris King, Phillip Higgins & Megan CannanResult: stopped after not completing loop four within the required time

“I can't believe we came all this way to get dished up a track like that,” said Alison Higgins, who was New Zealand's last competitor left in the ride. “We had our backs against the wall from the start. It was just a nightmare.”

With one other WEG campaign under her belt, Higgins said she came into the France event well prepared. “I wasn't scared at all and it wasn't daunting,” she said. She rode the first two loops with Latta and said it was “absolutely fantastic to be riding as a team”. But the conditions played havoc with everyone. “That heavy ground zapped the life clean out of the horses... we had trained for the twisting, turning and change of directions, but not for knee deep bog,” she said. Loop two had been bog or tarseal.

Higgins knew at the last check point on loop four that she wasn't going to be able to complete the event. “I had something like 20 minutes to ride 7-1/2 kilometres – it just wasn't going to happen. I was gutted,” she said. But she has huge belief in her horse, and is grateful to owner Chris King for giving her the ride. “He is a world class horse. He is short coupled and smaller and built to handle the twisting and turning. He and I left 110 percent out on that course ... we had absolutely nothing left,” she said. They will continue to compete again together in New Zealand, but Higgins is not sure she is keen to be part of another WEG team. “I would need a hell of a lot more intel on the track before I would commit,’’ she said. “The next one is in Canada, so it is a shorter journey ... and I do have more unfinished business, so we will have to see, I guess.”

STUD NEWS

Delight Arab Horse StudKAHUNA TIKI (US)'s owner Tanya Stevenson approached us a few months ago about taking Tiki on lease - so it was agreed we would stand him at Stud on our new property near Taumarunui and he arrived here back in July (photo 1). Thank you sooo much for your confidence in us Tanya, and hopefully we can give Tiki more opportunity to sire some lovely foals, especially since he is now 21 years. We've been very impressed at his lovely nature and feel he has a lot to offer with his world class racing pedigree, good size and scope, and wonderful temperament. Tiki has certainly had an interesting life, being bred in the USA (his grandsire Kontiki and other very close relatives are listed in the Racing Hall of Fame in USA), campaigned by the Royal Family in UAE and then imported to NZ in 2005 - he is quite a special boy. Several of his progeny are now excelling out in Open company, and in Endurance, Ashley Cole's Kahuna Moon has been very successful. Ashley is rapt with her new foal which is a full brother to 'Moon' and now 2-3 weeks old. We intend putting our Ngapa Joussif mares to Tiki and look forward to some very nice foals next season. There are also several outside purebred mares due to visit him soon. The two very last foals by Ranaarb (AU) are now yearlings and they are both quite stunning - I think he left some of his best till last! We are very happy with the scopey grey filly (Delights Ranaaria pending) out of Delights Oracle (photo 3), and a very smart chestnut colt who will be kept entire (Delights Ranaarb pending out of Delights Estelle (photo 2). This season we have two very nice colt foals by Delights DJ Zarif - both stamped with his refinement and lovely clean straight legs. We have an elegant chestnut with 4 stockings out of Rowallan Classic Sireen (AU) and a very sweet grey from Rowallan Crystabell (AU). I'm sure these two would do well in endurance later with all the proven endurance blood on both sides.

The move to our new farm went well and we're enjoying life in this lovely part of the country, not sure why Taumarunui sometimes gets some bad press as we've found everyone to be really friendly and helpful, there are lots of horse riding groups, and we are enjoying the lack of wind in this area. It’s really good to be back on a large hill country drystock farm again, although the farm was quite run down so we have lots of projects to keep us busy. I think we've made quite good progress in the 8 months we've been here, with a large covered yard built, big shed with stables, lockup, smoko room, round yard, lots of new fencing and yards already completed. Hopefully Stu will start riding again soon, and maybe even get to an endurance ride!!

Masada Park ArabiansMasada Park Arabians held our Open Day on the 21st of September. A total of around 70 people enjoyed visiting the stud and viewing the horses. This year’s Open Day was quite a relaxed affair compared to the former ones we have had. Instead of showing the horses off individually to music we just had a walk around every paddock with people getting up close and personal with the horses. People from all walks of life came from pony club families to people just interested in anything to do with Arabian history.

The stallions Dione ERA (AU) (photo 2) and Masada Park Million Dollar Baby (photo 1) put on shows of rearing on command and showing off their powerhouse movement for everyone. The mares waiting to foal were of interest to everyone and the family connections also had people seeing the breeding programme of Masada Park. An option was put on an unborn foal from Masada Park Movie Star (IIU) (photo 3) and the client’s mare for sale was sold as well as bookings to the stallions.

Our wonderful feed company McMillans provided us with feed samples, hats, hay bags and brochures for the day and "The Brew", Masada Park’s preferred mudfever cream also provided test-pots and sale pots for the day. Everyone enjoyed the food and refreshments also.

I urge every stud to hold Open Days, the amount of people that come, and not only Arabian people, is an excellent way to promote our beautiful breed to the unconverted.

On another note McMillans Equine Feed company are using a photo taken by Demelza Hoogeveen of Masada Park Movie Star (IIU) and myself for their national advertising campaign in Horse & Pony and Show Circuit magazines and their feed brochures. This is very exciting not only for Masada Park but for our Arabian breed as a whole. Instead of the usual show jumper, standardbred or sporthorse in their adverts, there will be a fairytale Arabian mare for everyone to look at. Promotion at its best!

REQUIREMENTS

5The self-carbonated Application for Registration forms will be discontinued as they do not comply with the current registration regulations. Updated Purebred & Derivative registration forms are being created and will be available to download from the NZAHBS website soon. In the meantime – please continue to use the self-carbonated forms as follows: • The Stallion Owner must complete and sign the Service Certificate.• The Mare Owner (breeder) must complete and sign the Dam Owner’s

Certificate, Mare Return & Markings.• A qualified Veterinary Surgeon must sign off on the identity of the foal

– there is no box for this on the self-carbonated form – please have them sign above the horse diagrams.

• Please ensure that all whorls are noted on the application form with an ‘X’.

Please contact the office if you have any questions regarding registrationsor require an extension of time due to extenuating circumstances.

6 7Current Purebred Registration fees: Geldings $59.50, Fillies $197.50 (includes DNA typing fee), Colts $472.50 (includes DNA typing fee).

8 If you have a Colt that you are undecided whether to geld or not an extension can be given until 1 November at which time he must be registered as a Colt or Gelding and the relevant fee paid.

A registered colt is eligible for a gelding refund on production of a gelding certificate if he is gelded before 2 years of age, has not covered any mares & is still owned by the breeder.
