Abstract Hunza has a complex history of NGOs active in the valley since 1960, invested in projects of different types and scale. These organizations helped the local community in enhancing possibilities of livelihood. And subsequent to the construction of the Karakoram highway (KKH) the area became easily accessible for tourists. And the valley transformed into an active tourist area. It’s been half a century since locals are hosting the tourists, and they have lost most of their subjective activities while they were engaged in hosting for a long period of time. This is a result of proposed solutions and policies by NGOs which were not truly understood by locals to achieve the desired impact. All the tourist oriented businesses have lost their meaning without their inhabitants/users (tourists). As the situations changed after 9/11. At some levels the initiatives of preservation of culture, locals are missing out a quality life and legging behind in this modern era. And the reality is that, inhabitants are losing their individuality and existence. They are like artifacts kept for display in a museum. The locals are now realizing the fact that there is a world beyond preservation of culture and tradition. They have a keen urge to have a pace with the modern world.

• Use of stone • Mud plaster • Wooden framing system • Wooden roof with earth cover • Low height celling for cold climate • Open veranda on roof for summers

• Wood is becoming costly with the growth in population in the village. The rates of transportation of stone to the village from mountain site is getting higher day by day. The community has started using concreate and steel as an alternative for being cheap and easy to make. The labor is also easily available for concreate and steel construction. We need a better solution like rammed earth technique to stop the community from destroying the village by using these materials which are not sustainable and environmental friendly.
