In the preface to the 2011 volume of the Annual Review of Entomology, Editorial Committee member Dr. Ted Schultz notes, “Information overload is a general problem for society that extends well beyond science. Very clever people continue to invent very clever systems for organizing and interpreting information, spanning the spectrum from ‘unfiltered’ to ‘authoritative.’” As information providers, librarians can help scholars filter the wealth of available information by suggesting critical review articles. A critical review article draws together the significant primary research in a field, and provides a systematic, intelligent synthesis from the perspective of an expert in that field. Essentially, these experts give readers permission to not read everything. Instead, researchers shortcut the wider pool of literature and proceed to the most important and relevant citations and references. Writing a critical review article for Annual Reviews is no small task. In fact, reviews tend to be personal contributions to the field outside of funded projects and require a significant investment from authors. As Dr. Susan T. Fiske, Editor and Author for the Annual Review of Psychology, writes in the preface to Volume 52 of the Annual Review of Psychology, “Invitations to write an Annual Review chapter typically elicit some mix of thrill, dread, pleasure, indecision, burden, intimidation, and challenge—not unlike commencing one’s PhD or undertaking a skydive.” Authors are charged with writing a review that is accessible and interesting to a broad audience of researchers, teachers, and students of all levels. Coupled with expert viewpoints, Annual Reviews enhances these critical review articles by providing value-added content and new technologies to each, including the following: Key words, glossary and acronyms lists, summary points Live links to all references, including citations and cross-references Videos and time-based media Extensive use of color and enhanced graphics Mobile technology for access on or off campus Information overload is not a new problem, and technology and culture continue to complicate the issues.

Coupled with expert viewpoints, Annual Reviews enhances these critical review articles by providing value-added content and new technologies to each, including the following:

•Key words, glossary and acronyms lists, summary points

•Live links to all references, including citations and cross-references

•Videos and time-based media

•Extensive use of color and enhanced graphics

•Mobile technology for access on or off campus

Information overload is not a new problem, and technology and culture continue to complicate the issues. We hope you’ve gained a better appreciation for how critical review articles can be valuable to your patrons in addressing the challenge of understanding massive amounts of content.
