It is one of our significant community building days, a civic clean up and our only major fund raiser each year. Catholic schools have a long standing custom of families supporting the development of facilities that their children share in and Aquinas is no different. We are very fortunate at Menai to be able to learn and teach in a College that has such delightful facilities that the families and past students have helped shape over the last twenty three years. Our major capital works program is in full swing and the latest stage will soon be complete. By mid -term we will have occupied not only the new administration building but also the MacKillop Learning Common - a learning space that includes 12 new classrooms and a breakout space that has the equivalent floor space of three classrooms. On each of the two levels the rooms have the flexibility to open up into lager spaces that can cater for year groups or house meetings. 2014 Envirowalk 2014 Envirowalk parent volunteers To this end we are appealing to all students to raise as much money as they can to help defray the costs of our new buildings and amenities. We are aiming to raise in excess of $30 000 to contribute towards a project that will run into millions of dollars. Specifically we are using the funds for this year’s Envirowalk to purchase LED monitors and stands for each of the rooms in the Mackillop Learning Common. To date we have already finished remodelling student toilets near the Nagle Paved and adjacent to the La Salle Pavilion, renovating Rooms 1 – 4 into our new fitness centre and refurbishing Rooms 5 – 7 into more contemporary and useful learning spaces. It is often difficult to fund raise when there is not a highly visible outcome, the last twelve months building activity has seen to that and I encourage all of our families to support their children in fundraising with relatives and friends, donating prizes or with their presence on the actual day. A specific letter around this has been sent home and we are looking forward to a highly successful day on Tuesday August 18 th and raising money to provide an enhanced learning environment for our students and staff. Last Saturday was not only the Feast of St James, Apostle & and first Apostolic Martyr, it was also the first occasion that an Australian Archbishop has had to have his Pallium imposed upon him in his own Archdiocese. A Pallium is made from lamb’s wool and has its genesis in being worn by ancient Greek and Roman philosophers, it was subsequently adopted by the Church and has become a symbol of unity between the Pope and Archbishops the world over. Pope Francis hoped that by having this ceremony in the Archbishop’s home cathedral that it would give all of us the opportunity to be more involved in the life of the Universal Church. In his homily Archbishop Fisher emphasised the word root of pallium in terms of palliative and funeral pall and the idea of being wrapped around with care and the link that can be made with Christ the Good Shepherd. It was an amazing liturgy and thanks to three Year 11 students; Alison Cameron, Crystal Lister and Georgina Skinner who represented the College, along with other students from many of the Catholic Schools in Sydney at this historic event.

#laceitup 4 Homeless Kids #laceitup is raising awareness of youth homelessness in

Australia and raising vital funds for Youth Off The

Streets (YOTS). More than 47,000 young people under 25 are homeless,

making up 48% of the homeless population. You have the luxury of putting on a pair of shoes each day, homeless youth aren’t so lucky; instead they are forced to sleep

with their shoes on at night to keep warm and ready to run from harm. #laceitup is a simple moment in your daily routine – tying up your laces, and letting

it act as a symbol for the thousands of young people that battle cold streets every

day. Next week, the first week of August is Homeless Persons Week. Social Justice

Committee members will be selling #laceitup shoelaces for $5 a pair all week in

pastoral. On Friday 7th August students are encouraged to wear their laces in their

sports shoes and promote this initiative through social media with the #laceitup. Please support this great campaign for Fr Chris Riley’s Youth Off the Streets

Charity! For more information go to www.laceitup.com.au

40 years of the 40 Hour Famine Every year since 1975, thousands of people like you have made a stand against global

hunger. Together, world vision has raised approximately $200 million to transform millions

of lives!

There’s still much more to be done. But with each year, we are making a real difference.

This year members of the Social Justice Committee will be giving up either food,

technology, furniture or even talking to raise funds for World Vision.

The 40 hour famine will be held over the weekend of the 14-16th August. Participants fast

from 8pm Friday night until 12pm on Sunday. Aquinas will have a team page for donations.

Stay Tuned!

For more information go to http://www.40hourfamine.com.au/

Any questions about any of the initiatives above please see Mrs Monk. Please note there will be no meeting on 30

YEAR 7 SCIENCE TOY TESTING

Today, all of Year 7 have managed to create lots of different models for their assessment. The varieties of toys from Year 7 were assessed on how well they functioned and what energy transformations they included. Toys ranged from balloon-powered cars, a tumble-wing, spinning tops and even a make-shift pop gun. They were presented in front of their classes, and though there were faults in some models, overall all of Year 7 put on a wonderful show filled with originality and imagination.

Year 10 Southern Region Evangelisation Retreat

The Year 10 Southern Region Evangelisation Retreat was held over two days on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 July at the Tops

Conference Centre, Stanwell Tops. The activities were based on the theme “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy”.

Students participated in the retreat activities throughout Tuesday and Tuesday night, and continued with retreat activities on the

Wednesday, finishing with the celebration of the Eucharist and Lunch on Tuesday afternoon. The students represented Aquinas

Catholic College in an exceptional way. Aquinas also took out the title as CHAMPIONS for trivia on the first night! A special

thank you to Miss Petrie for coming along and sharing this experience with Year 10. Also thank you to Mr O’Connor for joining

us on the first evening.

Miss Kilzi

Youth Ministry Coordinator

Student reflections:

Olivia Clark

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Evangelisation Retreat as we were able to

join together to discuss and understand our faith as a group. A

memorable part of the retreat was when we won the trivia night with

the help of Mr O'Connor, Miss Kilzi and Miss Petrie.”

Hailey Cooper

“The Evangelisation Retreat was a great opportunity for us as a school and individuals to explore our faith within the Catholic

Church through prayer and fun activities.”
