Sporting events continue to crop up in our calendar and the last week has been no different;

Congratulations to our netballers who recently competed in the NSW Combined Catholic College gala day @

Penrith. Especial congratulations to the Senior Team who won their division!! Well Done!!

Our senior rugby league side also completed an arduous season at Kogarah Jubilee in the City v Country final

of the GIO trophy. Whilst they were beaten on the day they acquitted themselves as excellent ambassadors of

the College and have had a great year.

Please keep the Coupland and Incollingo families in your thoughts and prayers as Jarrod Coupland [Year 7] and

Samuel’s [Year 9] grandfather passed away over the weekend as did the grandfather of Joshua Incollingo

[Year 11].

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Year 12 EXIT Survey 2015

With Year 12 about to complete their schooling here at the College we are keen to find out what our seniors think of

their time here at school. To that end we have employed a company to put together a comprehensive digital online

survey, termed an Exit Survey for the Year 12s to complete. This survey will seek student feedback on a wide range

of school activities including academic matters, pastoral care, extra-curricular matters and the religious life of the

College. The results and feedback will help us better serve future groups of seniors as they undertake the rigours of

the HSC years

Page 4: AQUINAS CATHOLIC COLLEGE MENAI · 2015-08-26 · AQUINAS CATHOLIC COLLEGE MENAI 24th August, 2015 Vol.23.No.24 Term 3 has provided many learning opportunities as well co and extracurricular

The survey is administered by an external consultant who will provide us with both our own results/findings/data

and data comparing Aquinas to other schools using the survey.

We plan to administer the survey before the end of term and a personal email to the school account will be sent to all

Year 12 on Tuesday 25/8/15 asking them to undertake the survey which takes around 15 minutes, which can be done

at school or away from school. We are asking for 100% completion rate and look forward to reporting on the stu-

dents’ feedback early in term four. Stay tuned!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AT AQUINAS

Jesus said "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow

me.” (Matt 16:24) There have been a few moments in past weeks that have indicated that our students have taken this to heart. I

have been moved by stories of heroics on the netball court and football field by students wearing the Aquinas Crest.

The Senior Netball Team were victorious at the Combined Catholic Colleges Carnival throughout the week. Early in the day

Claire Serwa (Year 12) suffered what should have been a tournament ending ankle injury. It would have been easy for Claire to

take to the sidelines but she fought through the pain to stand by her team. She played the rest of the tournament. She put others

first.

At the same time across town the Rugby League team was attempting to add

the GIO State Trophy to the City Trophy they won a few weeks ago. The City

Trophy saw the boys triumphant after being significantly behind. They didn’t

give up. They played for each other. A similar story was unfolding and a

comeback was in the air. Early in the second half with the game in the balance

three players were significantly injured. Matt Azar was hit in one tackle where

he was turned in more directions than a cinnamon twist. Michael Bonnici was

hit by what some are describing as the best tackle they have ever seen at any

level of the game. He was hit so hard that broken ribs and a punctured lung

could have been possible. Moments later Josh Bradstock arose from a tackle

with what should have been a game ending ankle injury. Not one of these

three came off. Despite their injuries they did not give up. For them the team

was more important. They put others first.

The week concluded with Year 12 having the opportunity to partake in a

sleep-out in support of St. Vincent de Paul’s winter appeal. The College Hall

was full of Year 12 students putting others first. Our Year 12’s have shone on the sporting field and in the social justice arena.

While not every student in Year 12 can get a position in our sporting teams and not every student could make the winter sleep-

out every student is part of the most important team. Year 12 now need to take on the HSC as a team. A good team trains hard,

puts in plenty of practice, picks up teammates when they fall behind and looks out for each other. Each player knows what they

need to do so that the team succeeds. The full time whistle on this game is close. Finish strong, work hard, do your job! It’s not

just for you…

LEARNING AND CURRICULUM MATTERS This Week’s Assessments

YEAR 12 ‘Where to From Here…’

Last Thursday, during the pastoral period, I spoke to Year 12 about how they could work both independently and together to

maximise their marks between now and the HSC examinations that begin on Monday October 12th.

Essentially, students are no longer competing with each other for rank positions and one of the most effective ways for them to

improve their results and their chance of HSC success is to share resources and study notes with other students in their cohort. It

is by improving the results of all Aquinas students that each individual has the best opportunity to improve their internal result

through the process of moderation that is applied after students sit the HSC.

Another vital element to improved results is the practice of completing past papers and submitting them to the class teacher for

marking. Teachers spent a great deal of time providing examination feedback and any student who did not achieve 100% in

their recent Trial HSC examinations should take the opportunity to re-work and submit their responses after taking on board the

feedback that was provided.

The College will support student efforts to prepare for the coming examinations by opening the Resource Centre from 9am-1pm

each week day of the Term 3 holidays and by providing various subject specific holiday seminars. The remaining Friday

afternoons of this term will see several subjects holding compulsory tutorials and the traditional subject seminars will be held in

Week 1 of Term 4 and continue throughout the HSC for subjects with later examinations.

YEAR 11 Preliminary Examination Preparation Resource Centre

Year 11 students are encouraged to join Year 12 in the Resource Centre for Tuesday night study sessions while preparing for

their Preliminary Course examinations.

Year 9 2016 Electives Information Evening

Current Year 8 students and their parents are reminded that there is a compulsory Information Evening regarding the selection

of Elective Courses for 2016 from 7pm until 8pm in the John Paul ll Hall on Wednesday 26 th August. The evening will include

a subject market where students can ask specific questions of the teachers and see a selection of the work from each subject.

Year 12 Winter Sleepout

What a great night we had on Friday night at the Sleepout! The weather was reasonably warm, the soup and sausages were hot

and the students were AMAZING!

Big thanks to all that supported the event. 79 Year 12

students attended with blankets and sleeping bags to show

solidarity with the poor and homeless. We played sport,

cards, twister, guitars and just generally had fun hanging

out before reminiscing with some old videos of past camps

and then settling down for our “Back to the Future” movie

marathon. The students were wonderfully behaved and

even went to sleep…eventually!

We had three members of the local chapter of

St Vincent De Paul come along and show their support.

We appreciate all the work done by Mr Keith Corbett

and his team for Vinnies.

Thank you to Mrs Kizi who donated 100 sausages from

her husband’s butcher shop in Rockdale Plaza. Thanks

to Mr Knight who set up the BBQ and urn for the

evening.

‘Enlivened by the Spirit’ 9

SCIENCE WEEK AT AQUINAS Science Week at Aquinas was an exciting week for students and teachers alike. In line with the theme of the United

Nations International Year of Light, daily prayers had a light theme, a common theme in religion and of course as an

important energy source, also an important scientific concept. Pastoral classes were challenged each morning by science

trivia questions and competition was keen for the prize of a bag of red frogs. Winners of these daily competitions were:

7 White, 8 White, 9 Blue, 9 Red, 9 White, 11 Silver and 12 Purple.

80 students from Years 7 – 12 also competed in a Paper Plane event. Competition was fierce with students divided into

race numbers - 5 in each race, with the winner of each race competing in the final race. There were about 5 races in each

competition with roughly 5 students in each race. The final winners in each category were:

* Anika Swords (7B) - winner of 7 and 8 group

* Luke Coogan (9W) - winner of 9 and 10 group

* Aidan O'Hara (11P) - winner of 11 and 12 group.

A photo of these students will be added to the Science Wall of Fame.

12 individual students in Years 8 and 9 spent the week finalising their entries for the STANSW Young Scientist

competition. This competition, involving students from across NSW, requires students to complete a scientific

investigation, their student research project, which is then submitted for judging by a large team of teachers. Up to 800

entries are expected in this competition which will culminate in an award ceremony later in the year. These students may

also be able to submit their investigation to the University of Wollongong competition also.

770 students from Years 7 to 10 are also competing online in the Science World Series Championships. Aquinas has

managed to maintain its position of 19th in the World and students have been logged on in their free time, showing that

the competition is both interesting and engaging. Students have been lucky enough to experience this same learning

platform within their classrooms also. The online format provides some background content with a video or diagram to

enhance understanding and then asks the students a series of questions to gauge their level of understanding. The point

scoring format means that students are motivated to work through the answers to gain more points than their friends.

On Thursday Year 8 attended a presentation by Ruben Meerman, The Surfing Scientist. The presentation involves stories

and videos about current science issues and also involves lots of demonstrations. Imaging an experiment where a red

balloon is placed inside a green balloon and both balloons are inflated. The red balloon is then tied off and the green

balloon is inflated a bit more. Using a laser Ruben was then able to burst just the inner red balloon. Lasers used in this

way are a potential cancer treatment. Interestingly lasers, which were developed as a result of the space program, have

revolutionised surgical procedures and look like doing the same with cancer treatments. Ruben’s message to students

was that there is a lot of work to be done in this area of science alone and that the career opportunities in Science are

many and varied.

On Thursday the Science staff hosted a morning tea for all the Aquinas staff. This was a wonderful celebration of Science

Week and I am grateful for the help of Mrs Julie Wells and Mrs Mary-Anne Lee our lab assistants who provided the

decorations and set up all the food, enough for an army. Thank you also to Ms Lauren Petrie who prepared an awesome

Periodic Table cake. Thank you also to all the Science teachers for their individual contributions to both the morning tea

and the events outlined above.

Four Myths about why your kids aren’t studying science for the HSC

The Science Teachers’ Association of NSW is the peak body in NSW for the provision of professional learning to science

teachers. As the President of this association I am often asked to make comments on various science and education related

topics. The responses given by STANSW are not solely my own but are a compilation of the ideas of our Executive Council.

Recently we were approached to provide a spokesperson to provide comments on why the numbers of students studying

science in senior years is decreasing. Mrs Margaret Shepherd, the Southern Region Science Advisor and STANSW Treasurer,

was our spokesperson on this occasion and her comments are included in the Sydney Morning Herald article “Four Myths

about why your kids aren’t studying science for the HSC”, can be read at the following link: http://www.smh.com.au/

national/education/four-myths-about-why-your-kids-arent-studying-science-for-the-hsc-20150805-gisnr5.html.

The article presents the views of a number of science educators and provides a balanced view of potential reasons and poses

some suggestions about changes in processes that could see numbers increase.

The main driver behind the decrease in numbers studying science seems to be a change in University entry requirements.

Students who want to study science related courses at University do not need to have studied science at the HSC. They are

able to study a 6 week bridging course – not always an easy task and made harder if you need to do a bridging course in

Chemistry, Physics and Biology before you start your university course. And what about their chances of success once they

commence the course? There is strong evidence showing that, in first year Chemistry for example, students who completed

Chemistry and 2 unit Maths at the HSC are likely to pass first year Chemistry. Not studying Chemistry and 2 unit Maths at

the HSC is thus going to make the task a lot more difficult.

Australia's Chief Scientist, Professor Ian Chubb, has written that the "perceived difficulty of these [STEM] subjects needs to

be matched by appropriate rewards" for those considering university entry. In other words, students who complete science

subjects at the HSC should be rewarded for doing so, not just for the Band 6 students, but for the greater majority of the

students. Some Universities have started this by recognising those students who have studied science at HSC with extra bonus

points towards their ATAR for a Science degree.

Our recent Science week activities show that students are interested in science and the large numbers of students who spend

their time using electronic devices – not possible without scientific innovation – shows the impact that one small aspect of

science has on our lives and yet, with the almost infinite variety of career prospects that a science career has to offer, so few

students still don’t see studying science as an option. Scientists will find the cure for cancers and the work involved in this

will provide opportunities for a large number of researchers and that is only one problem that needs to be solved. There are

hundreds more. And the opportunities are unlimited.

Immersion Program to Timor-Leste, 2015

In Term 4, four students from our College and myself will be joining other students and teachers from St Patrick’s College,

Sutherland and St John Bosco College, Engadine on a 10 day Immersion Program to Timor-Leste. The Year 11 students

selected to participate in the program this year are Cassandra Bruce, Emily McKay, Imogen Stacy and Madison Vangi.

Timor-Leste is a small country in South East Asia, located about 640km northwest of Darwin, Australia. With a population of

over 1,131,000, 98% of people identify as Catholic. Close to half of the population lives in poverty, as many as 70 percent of

people face chronic food insecurity and unemployment hovers around the 50 percent mark.

The economy of East Timor is in ruins, after being neglected under Portuguese rule and deliberately sabotaged by occupation

troops during the war to independence from Indonesia. As a result, the country remains among one of the poorest in the world.

The program is a cross-cultural immersion and mission exposure program that provides participants with a unique opportunity

for experiential learning. Participants immerse themselves in the culture and life issues of people in the Developing World

context by engaging with ordinary people, key community and Church leaders.

The purpose of this Immersion program is to gain an insight into the realities of life for the people of Timor-Leste. The hope is

that through the experience, participants grow to see the world differently, deepen their spirituality and commit to their faith by

building a more just and peaceful world.

We will have the opportunity to visit NGO’s, orphanages and schools as well as explore the local communities and towns.

We look forward to the trip ahead and sharing our experiences with the school community on our return

Year 7 History Excursion

Year 7 were given the opportunity to have a hands on experience of History during an excursion to the Nicholson Museum at

Sydney University.

Throughout the day we saw some incredible artefacts from Ancient Egypt including two real Mummies and a human head that

was thousands of years old.

We learnt some pretty amazing stuff throughout the day. Some highlights included handling real artefacts, the Lego city of

Pompeii and the story of Troy. We also got to draw in the Graffiti Tunnel.

Overall, this experience was informative, exciting and definitely a new experience. We would hope to go again someday as it

has great resources for young minds.

NSWCCC NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last Tuesday our Representative Netball squad competed in

the annual NSW CCC Championships. The girls were full

of positive energy and ferocity as we made our way to

Penrith to compete against some of the most elite and

toughest netball players in NSW.

Our squad consisted of a Junior, Intermediate and Senior

team, competing in separate divisions and played a total of 7

games throughout the day.

The Junior team played fiercely, winning 5 of their 7

matches. The team consisted of Caitlin Norris, Monique

Corapovski, Lily Wells, Daisi Kirrage, Isabella Mayday,

Madeline Parker, Keeley Lennon, Halle Cambey, Shannon

Brown and Grace Edgar. The Junior girls were successfully

led and coached by Miss Lauren Petrie.

The Intermediate team played strong and

competitively, winning 4 of their 7 matches. The

team consisted of Alexandra Bolton, Brodie

Boyle, Jacqueline Brown, Brooklyn Coots,

Chelsea Cryer, Emma Donovan, Caitlyn Eshman,

Olivia Clark, Christina Nguyen, Georgia Turner

and Teagan Lang. The girls were led and coached

by Mrs Denise Martin and Mrs Simone D’Astoli.

The Senior team consisted of a group of highly

skilled and talented girls: Adrienne Bogard,

Claire Serwa, Louise Spratt, Alana Jehnic,

Alana Halliday, Kaitlin Prestidge, Sophie

Gleeson, Lauren Geaney, Britnee Tyers and

Sarah Knoke. They were led to victory by Mrs

Cathy Spratt and myself. With flawless play

and a genuine hunger to win, the girls

maintained their composure in some very

heated games where the competition was fierce.

The girls played at a high standard and won all

7 of their matches. The senior team were very

deserving Champions and have made myself

and the College extremely proud. It was a

fitting way to farewell our Year 12 girls who

have come so close to wining this event for the

past 5 years. Congratulations girls!

I would like to acknowledge our umpires who displayed professionalism and good sportsmanship throughout the day. They were

Amy Hildebrandt, Kayla Green and Laura Serwa, as well as our efficient team managers and photographers: Bella Baldachhino

and Tiarne Christofides.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the day and for your continuous support and encouragement of all players and staff.

I would also like to make special mention of Bradley Hunt and Ayden Vangi for providing the girls with a generous amount of

oranges, powerade, water and medical care on the day. The girls appreciated all your efforts.

Yours in Netball, Mrs Nicole Katrib
