    LIVE PLANTS

Once the water conditions and pH levels have

been corrected, live plants canbe addedto theaquarium. Remember to empty some waterfrom the aquarium before adding anything to it.

REMEMBER LIVE PLANTS NEED TO BE

FED! An aquarium safe plant fertiliser shouldbe used.

    LIGHTING

No more than 8 hours of light each day anddefinitelyno natural light. Longer lighttimes willaccelerate algae growth in the aquarium andhas no benefit to plants or fish.

Specialist light tubes are available throughretailers for saltwater and planted aquariums.

We recommend replacingthe lightglobe onceevery twelve months based on the light beingon 8 hours a day as the spectrum of lightchanges over time.

    FILTER MEDIA

    Biological Filtration (Ceramic Noodles)

Biological filtration is a process where toxicnitrogen compounds such as ammonia andnitrite (Fish waste)are removedfromthesystem

via a breakdown process carried out by nitrify-ing bacteria. (Nitrobacter and Nitrosomas). These nitrifying bacteria need substrate with ahigh surface areato adhere to suchas CeramicNoodles.

When starting a new systemit is important toremember that bacteria takes time to developand grow.

Youcanspeedupthe process byseedingthesystem with commercially available bacterialcultures / filter supplement.

2YHU time this media can block up or breakdown so it is important to monitor it. Seek

advice from your Aquarium dealer if either ofthese problems arise.

    Mechanical/Chemical Filtration (Carbon

    Cartridge)

This is the removal of dissolved organic andinorganic substances through adsorption on aporous substrate orbydirectchemical removal.Dissolved organic compounds are what turnsthe water a yellow-brown colour or causesfoaming at the surface of the aquarium andshould be removed.

    5HPRYHFDUERQLIWUHDWLQJILVKIRUPHGLFDWLRQ

Replace every 6 8 weeks as the carbonsabsorption capacity will have depleted.

Rinse well before placing in the aquarium. (Intap water).

    Mechanical/Biological Filtration (Filter

    Sponge)

This is the process whereby suspended solidsor particulate matter are removed from thewater.

It is important to remove suspended solids notonly to improve clarity of the water but also to:

    Avoidsmotheringthegillswithsolidssuch thatfish cannot breathe.

Decrease riskofdiseaseoutbreaks - there arehigh numbers of bacteria associated withsuspended organic solids.

Protect the biological filter material fromrapidly becoming clogged.

Can also act as a biological filter mediumbyproviding sufficientsurface area to host benefi-

    cial bacteria.
