AquaGenieSKIMMER/FEEDER

AquaGenie removes floating debris fromsurface water much faster than ordinary skim-mers. In addition, it provides a constant con-trolled supply of chlorine to pool waterautomatically.

AquaGenie catches fine dirt, leaves, pollen, floating germ-laden scum before it becomessuspended in the pool water or settles to the bot-tom. (Ten times as much water must be runthrough filter to remove suspended dirt as toremove dirt caught while still on the surface.)

INSTALLAnON

When the adjustable collar-feeder isinstalled, it will be necessary to connect the freeend of the 3116” tubing (Item #9) to the base ofthe feeder tray. The fixed end of the 3/16” tubingis attached to the pressure chamber, and shouldnot be removed to make this connection.

When installed on pool, adjustable collar-feeder (Item #2 in accompanying pictorial chart)should be temporarily wedged up to the highestlevel so that the top is flush with the edge of thecoping by using the extension collar provided ifnecessary. Before pouring concrete aroundAquaGenie, be sure to wrap a piece of poly-ethylene around the collar to prevent concretefrom bonding to the plastic.

OPERATION

The AquaGenie feeder is operated by waterbeing returned by the filter to the pool. This cleanwater is directed down and out through a nozzleslot in the orifice plate. The sheet-like jet of watercreated by this action causes counter currentswhich increase the effectiveness of theAquaGenie’s skimming action. Pressure built upin the pressure chamber (behind the orifice plate)diverts some of this water through the tubing intothe feeder tray. In the feeder tray a supply ofchlorine is being constantly dissolved. Chlorine-laden water now pours over the tray’s V-notchinto the main sump of the AquaGenie, where itdisinfects the water being drawn into the skim-mer. Chemically treated water is then sent to the

filter for removal of solids and is returned to thepool.

If you desire to return the filtered water tothe pool through an auxiliary return fitting, orthrough a jet nozzle installed on optional stairs,it’s important to maintain water flow toAquaGenie. If the pool is equipped with such anauxiliary return, there should be a valve on the ,return line to the AquaGenie, and another valveon the line to the auxiliary return fitting. Whenusing the auxiliary return line, don’t close thevalve on the AquaGenie return line. Keep it“cracked open” enough to continue a flow ofwater to the AquaGenie. Enough back pressurewill develop to keep the feeder operating. As longas water is leaving the feeder tray over the V-notch, it is being chlorinated and returned to thecirculatory system. For full benefit of Aqua-Genie’s automatic skimming and chlorinating, donot use auxiliary returns unnecessarily. KeepAquaGenie operating normally, with full flow ascontinuously as possible.

AquaGenie CANISTER

Carefully read directions and cautions onAquaGenie canisters.

Insert canister in feeder tray with canistercap being near the outside wall of the feedertray.

To prevent the possibility of a highly con-centrated chlorine solution remaining in thefeeder, or entering the pool, the feeder tray willreceive no water from pressure chamber, and willautomatically drain if the filter pump is shutdown, or if there is a power failure.

Never put any mater/a/ in the feeder trayother than AquaGenie canisters and Trichlorotablets. Contact with other brands of chlorinetablets may cause a violent reaction or ex-plosion.

MAINTENANCE

Always maintain water level of pool up tothe water level marks on the AquaGenie faceplate (see Sketch #l). Flow should be over theweir.

A/ways br/ng water level up to marks assoon as possible.

1. Clean baskets before vacuuming. Backwashfilter before and during procedure, if condi-tion of filter bed hampers flow.

2. Screw a plastic insert fitting in the vacuumadapter plate (5). fill vat-hose with water, attach hose to fitting and drop adapter plateover basket (or simply insert vat-hose in

adapter plate). The adapter plate is taperedto seal against seat in AquaGenie’s mainsump.

3. Debris vacuumed off the bottom will becaught in the basket. Some material (hairand grass, for example) may pass throughto the pump strainer. Finer material will becaught in the filter.

LOCATIONS OF AquaGenie

AquaGenie should be located near the cen-ter of a long side of the pool. Vary the location toorient the AquaGenie’s mouth towards theprevailing winds as with ordinary skimmer. Theaction of AquaGenie will be effective as long as itis installed at least eight (8) feet from either end.Choosing the correct location is important, but isnot as critical as with ordinary skimmers. PIPE ADAPTERS

Insert pipe adapters into the pressure throatport and the bottom port of the AquaGenie. Usethe proper sealant (Permatex #51 Pipe JointCompound or equal) for threaded connectionsand PVC cement for rigid pipe connections.

Apply a small amount of Permatex to oneside of one of the large gaskets to hold tem-porarily while assembling. Place the adhesiveside of the gasket on the face plate, aligning theholes. (see sketch #3)

Before positioning the face plate assembly, make two small vertical slits in the vinyl liner asindicated on sketch #4. The purpose of theseslits is to permit easier removal of the vinyl frombehind the horizontal bar of the face plate afterinstallation of AquaGenie.

Carefully position the face plate/gasket as-sembly on the vinyl liner, covering the face of theAquaGenie. Pierce the liner through the top twoholes of the face plate prior to inserting screws.Screw two Phillips head Hi-Lo screws into theseholes using only a #3 Phillips screwdriver. Anyother size screwdriver will destroy the screwhead and prevent making a leak-proof seal.

DO NOT completely tighten these twoscrews at this time. Allow the heads to projectabout l/8” from the countersink in the face plate.

SKETCH #8Face Plate

Now pierce the remaining holes through theface plate, and tighten screws to within l/8” ofcountersink.

Relieve tension on the vinyl liner ins/de theface plate by making crosswise slits in the vinylas shown in sketch #5. At this point you maytighten all screws completely.

(Uneven pressure may distort the face plateand cause uneven seating of gasket seal.) Ex-cessive torque may break the corrosion-resistantscrews.

Do not assemble the orifice plate yet. Thiswill be done after all piping is competed andflushed.

SKETCH #4In Vinyl Liner

After the face plate has been installed, carefully cut out the vinyl liner using a sharpknife. Cut the top edge and the two sides of theskimmer opening, and the top, bottom and twosides of the orifice opening. Grasp the triangularpiece of vinyl remaining at the bottom of theskimmer opening to remove it. The vinyl from be-hind the horizontal bar will be removed at thistime. (see sketch #8)

PIPING

Use as few elbows as possible in the pipingof the entire recirculation system. Each elbowreduces the efficiency of the AquaGenie in par-ticular and the entire filtration system in general.Be sure to double clamp the return line when itconnects to the adapter in the pressure throat.Follow piping layout as closely as possible. BLOCKING UP

It is recommended to support theAquaGenie with a piece of l-112” pvc pipe in theproper receptable, located in the bottom of theunit, and support on a level concrete block. Donot disturb the AquaGenie while providing thissupport. Shim until the pier bears the weight ofthe AquaGenie.

ASSEMBLY OF ORIFICE PLATE

Apply a small amount of Permatex to theback of the orifice plate. Place a small gasket onthe top, as marked, being certain all holes arealigned, and all edges are aligned. Before mount-ing the orifice plate to the AquaGenie, make surethat when assembled, the nozzle slot slopesdownward. (see sketch #8)

Nozzle slot muspositioned to dischargewater DOWNWARDS towardPool floor.

SKETCH #8

Secure the assembly using six Hi-Loscrews. Again, use only a #3 Phillips screwdriver. Tighten the screws evenly in the ordershown on Sketch #9. Develop your final screwpressure by following this sequence 3 or 4 times, similar to the technique of tightening an enginehead. The orifice plate is not designed to fit flushwith the face plate. The amount of protrusion willvary with the type of pool wall (foam, steel, orwood). Do not over tighten! A torque of 20”-1 lb.maximum is permitted. Excessive torque maybreak the corrosion-resistant screws.

BACKFILL

All backfill around the feeder must be freedraining coarse sand or fine gravel. It should bevery carefully tamped into place with an imple-ment such as a shovel handle in layers to givemaximum support.

STEEL PANEL POOLSWITH FACTORY CUT OUT

Apply a small amount of proper sealant(Dow Corning or General Electric food gradesilastic or equal) to one of the large gaskets andplace it on the face of the AquaGenie body. Makesure the mounting holes align.

Now align the holes in the above assemblywith the holes in the panel and mount with four#lO x 314 long slotted pan head screws. (seesketch #lO)

Stretch vinyl liner and fill pool to within 2” ofthe bottom of the AquaGenie. Follow instructionfor installation in “INSTALLING FACE PLATE.”

Foam wall panels are designed withembossed area for AquaGenie mounting loca-tion. Drill holes (3/8” dia.) at each inside cornerof large embossed area. Make cutout by follow-ing the inside edge of embossed surface. If usinga jig saw, it will be possible to cut bottom andboth vertical sides from the back of panel. Oncethis is accomplished, mark a horizontal line onface of panel 13/l 8” down from top for remainingcut. Using a 3/32” drill bit, drill lead holes atdepressions (8 total) on debossed surface formounting fasteners. Holes should not be drilledall the way through but a maximum of 112” deep.Place AquaGenie in cutout and mount from backwith (8) #IO x 3/4 hex washer head type ABscrews. (see sketch #I 1 & #12)

When installing AquaGenie on wood wall or“HYDRA” foam panels it will be necessary to useenclosed spacers to prevent unit from extendingthrough the panel too far.
