Writing and Speaking skills: TECHNIQUE SWAG BAG
1. Substitution. Write/say what you know how to say NOT what you want to say. e.g. The question says ‘where did you go last year on holiday?’ Oh dear – you went to Greece. Ah ha! but you know how to say Francia
2. Recycling. Learn the useful structures that you can re-use in lots of topics. e.g. se puede + infinitive = we must. Can be used for: e.g.
holidays – you can visit the Eiffel Tower. School – you can wear uniform
Work – you can arrive on time Restaurants – you can try a desert
Family – you cannot argue with our family Healthy living – you can eat vegetables
e.g. quiero + infinitive = I want Can be used for: e.g.
holidays – I want to visit NY School – I want to study Biology
Work – I want to be a doctor Restaurants – I want to eat snails
Family – I want to visit my grandma Healthy living – I want to eat more fruit
Reading and Listening skills: TECHNIQUE SWAG BAG
1. Cognates/near cognates. This is easy. If it looks like a word in English, it probably is. E.g. rápido, tímido, hospital, comenzar. Watch out for a few ‘false friends’ e.g. simpatico = kind , sensible = sensitive
2. Context. Look around the word. E.g. Me quedé en un hotel de 5 estrellas
What could estrellas mean ? It’s about hotels. It says a 5 …. Hotel. Of course, it must mean star. A 5 star hotel.
Obvious really
3. Words within a word. If you see a long word, look in it for clues to find a word you already know. E.g. paraguas
agua = water, para = for = for water = umbrella
4. Grammar rules. Use grammar rules you know to work out meaning E.g.…dor in Spanish turns a verb into a noun e.g hacedor (hacer= to make, so hacedor is a maker)
e.g. …mente in Spanish is ……ly in English so rápidamente = quickly
e.g. ….ción in Spanish is ….tion in English so polución = pollution
e.g. ….dad in Spanish is …..ty in English so sociedad = society
Listening and Speaking specific skills:
Know your sound/spelling links. Spanish is easier than English because it actually follows its rules. E.g. J - rojo – red (J sounds a bit like an 'h' in English doesn't it, but a bit harder?) LL - amarillo – yellow (LL is like a 'y' sound in English.) Z - azul – blue (Think of the 'th' in thanks.) RR - pelirrojo - auburn (hair) (You have to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your teeth and rrrrrrrroll your Rs there Ñ - castaño - brown (hair) The 'squiggle' – proper name= tilde - on top of it makes it sound like 'ny'. H - hermano – brother just like in the word 'hour', you don't pronounce the H in Spanish. The letter C has a hard sound in CUATRO but when it comes before an E or I it makes the same sound as Z – remember, like the 'th' in 'the'. C - cuatro – four C(i) - cien – hundred C(i) - cinco – five C(e) - doce - twelve 1. Listen for gist. Sometimes you don’t have to know exactly what is happening to get the right answer. Just
generally what it is about. E.g. its about friendship
2. Listen for key info. e.g. you can ignore all the bits you don’t understand. You might just be listening out for a time, a day of the week or a price.
