    Answers & Explanations

    Theme 3: Peopling (PEO)

Tecumseh was alarmed at the increase in conflict as U.S. citizens migrated west and set up new settlements in the Ohio River

Valley. He warns the tribes that they will face loss of land as the whites continue to desire to establish farms and homes onIndian lands.

The 1830 Indian Removal Act began the process of moving all the Indians east of the Mississippi River to federal lands in the

West. In what became a brutal and deadly campaign, thousands of Indians died on the march west in what became known as

    the Trail of Tears.

The Chinese Exclusion Act, the Know-Nothing Party, and the Zoot Suit riots are all examples of anti-immigrant attitudes in the

United States. The bracero  program was hailed for its role in bringing Mexican agricultural workers to the Southwest and

    helping meet increasing labor demands.

The tremendous labor demand for the construction of the transcontinental railroad led Congress to approve the Burlingame

    Treaty, which encouraged Chinese immigration.

The settlement houses that were established in American cities were designed to assist the new immigrants in their

acculturation to the United States. In addition to job training and English classes, the immigrants received a variety of social

    service assistance.

Immigration laws were modified in the 1920s to establish quotas for immigrants entering the United States. This favored

nations, such as those from western and northern Europe, which already had a significant number of individuals emigrating to

the United States. It made it more difficult for individuals to immigrate from southern and eastern Europe.

The increased demand for labor that accompanied the growth of industry in the last quarter of the 19th century led to the New

Immigration of 1880-1930, in which immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe came to the U.S. in unprecedented

    numbers.

The anti-immigrant nativism attitudes that have been expressed at various times in American history have a common thread of

resentment and discrimination. The Social Gospel attempted to apply the teachings of Jesus to assist the urban poor, including

    immigrants.

De las Casas was highly critical of the Spanish conquistadors and colonial officials who treated the Indians of the Western

Hemisphere in a horribly brutal fashion.

The encomienda  system was established by the Spaniards as they conquered Indian groups in the Americas. Conquistadors

and others were rewarded with control over a section of land and the Indians on it. This situation that was little better than

slavery, though officially the Indians were to be paid for working.
