Objective English Model Paper 1

Read the following passage and answer the questions 1 to 5      White cement is the basic raw material for producing cement tiles and cement paint, which are used extensively in building construction. The main consumers of white

Page 3: Aptitude Model With Top 25 Questions

cement are, therefore, cement tile and cement paint manufacturing units. These consumers, mostly in the small-scale sector, are today facing a major crisis because of a momentous increase in the price of white cement during a short period. The present annual licensed production capacity of white and gray cement in the country is approximately 3.5 lakh tones. The normal demand is 2-2.5 lakh tones. This means that there is idle capacity to the tune of one-lakh tones or more. The price rise is, therefore, not a phenomenon arising out of inadequate production capacity but evidently because of artificial scarcity created by the manufacturers in their self-centeredness       The main reason for the continuing spurt in cement price is its decontrol. As it is, there is stiff competition in the cement paint and tile manufacturing business. Any further price revision at this stage is bound to have a severe adverse impact on the market conditions. The Government should take adequate steps to ensure that suitable controls are brought in else it should allow import of cement. 1. Objective English Model Paper With Answers

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions 1 to 2

Construction in India is as old its civilization. However, Indian construction underwent a sea change with the induction of British technology in to the country. The post independence period also provided a fillip with massive projects coming up all over following the launching of the five-year plans. Perforce, the contractors acquired expertise in many challenging fields of construction activity.

One result of the book was that the Indian contractors embarked on construction projects abroad. The oil boom in the Middle East provided further momentum to India’s efforts in project exports.

This had beneficial for the Indian economy. Some of these spin-offs were substantial while others were marginal. First, Indian contractors were exposed to new technology and equipments. Secondly, project exports offered scope for large-scale employment of skilled, unskilled and managerial personnel.      An indication to this effect is the outflow of contract migrant workers to the major

Page 17: Aptitude Model With Top 25 Questions

construction centers. The annual outflow from India went up from 33.9 thousand in 1977 to 1.72 lakhs in 1979 and to 2.68 lakhs in 1981. There has been a decline in the migration rate since then. The number of migrant workers in 1987 was 1.22 lakhs. Thirdly, earnings from project exports eased the country’s foreign exchange problems. According to Exim Bank, an estimated 30 percent of the project value was repatriated into the country, which means over  Rs.2, 000 crore.

Finally, India also exported construction-building materials as part of the project export efforts. The precise data is not available. However, the Exim Bank, estimates it a 6 percent of the project value. The low volume of material content in the project export is due to higher price of materials, insistence of the client on local material and transport problems. The project exports fail into two distinct phases” The first phase coincided with the oil boom and the second with the post boom period. The boom phase lasted till 1982. During this period, India’s construction project exports exceeded Rs.5, 000 crore. This works out to projects worth Rs.1, 000 crore annually. The performance in the second phase shows a declining trend. The average volume of work has come down to Rs.150 crore since 1982. There were 54 project exporters operating abroad during the first phase and 45 in 1989.

1). According to the passage, during which year did the export of construction projects reach its peak?     1)1979  2)1982  3)1987  4)1977 2). What was the immediate outcome, according to the passage, of the expansion of construction projects in India?     1 )Indian contractors were exposed to new technology.     2)Indian contractors made huge profits.     3)India’s self-sufficiency in construction     4)Exporting construction projects. 3). According to the passage, what was the approximate percentage increase in migrants from India for overseas construction projects from 1979 to 1981?     1) 60  2) 40  3) 80  4) 140

Ironically enough, the very “Success” of operation Flood which is to make the cities flush with milk, has proved its undoing. Farmers in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka,

Page 18: Aptitude Model With Top 25 Questions

Tamil Nadu and Kerala are now faced with a surplus of supplies for which there are no takers. Indeed, some experts in the Union agriculture ministry are even going so far as to suggest that the country should export to neighboring countries Bangladesh, for example, which imports milk and dairy products. Does this mean that the needs of the consumers at home are met? Far from it. The fact that a dairy technology mission was created to improve the nutritional status of the rural poor speaks for itself. The protagonists of Operation Flood argue that the per capita consumption of milk has gone up from 108 g in 1967 to 158 g in 1987 and an expected 196 g in 1995, when the third phase of the programme comes to an end. But it is clear that consumption has been limited to the cities and that too to the relatively better off households.      Four out of every ten citizens in larger cities officially estimated to be living in slums are unable to afford sufficient milk for all their needs. What the much – aunted “surplus” thus amounts to therefore, is a saturation of the market comprising the other half. Even in Bombay, the most affluent metropolis, housewives find it difficult to meet their milk bills because it is priced the highest in the country.       The inadequate of take of milk is thus related to its price. The anomaly should be sufficient to prompt a through revaluation of Operation Flood, which is based on improving technology in the dairy industry to increase yield though at higher costs. Somewhat like the Green Revolution in cereals, the “white revolution” has its share of critics who argue that instead of concentrating on increasing the supply of milk in a few pockets (though the co operatives are inherently preferable to private suppliers), the authorities ought to spread the benefits of imp[roved dairying throughout the countryside. Like the Green Revolution which demands capital – intensive inputs and energy. Operation Flood requires genetically superior cattle, which in turn have to be provided with fodder, now in extremely short supply all over the country. What is more, schemes such as Operation Flood only sharpen the urban-rural divide, instead of narrowing it, which should surely be the objective of any development scheme.  6. What is the expectation regarding milk consumption in 1995?    1)It will be the same as in 1987    2)It will be about twice as much as in 1967    3)It will be about three times as much as in 1987    4)None of these 7.
