Aloha and E Komo Mai! (Welcome) Welcome to SCCM 2007, the 15th American Physical Society Topical Conference on the Shock Compression of Physical Matter. For this 15th SCCM conference, we have chosen the serene Fairmont Orchid Hotel on the Big Island of Hawai`i as the venue. The field of shock compression is vibrant on both sides of the Pacific. Hawai`i, as a gateway to the Pacific, is the ideal conference venue for scientific exchange on both sides of the Pacific. We have put together an exciting and diverse program that represents the multidisciplinary nature of shock compression. In recent years, there have been great developments in quasi-isentropic compression that takes us off the principal Hugoniot. This opens up a whole new area of phase space and possibilities but has a very different set of challenges that need to be overcome. For this conference, a special session was created to showcase these developments and challenges to the community. In a different vein, a session is devoted to medical uses of shock compression. This represents a very different use of shock compression than the established applications. For this year, we have six parallel sessions of contributed talks and two poster sessions presenting the latest developments in the field. Finally, this beautiful setting, on the Big Island of Hawai`i, will provide a magnificent backdrop for the important social and scientific exchanges between old friends and new ones. On behalf of the Organizing Committee and, our local host, the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, “E Komo Mai” (Welcome) to Hawai`i and the APS Topical Group. Malama Pono, Ricky Chau Jeff Nguyen Neil C. Holmes
