APRU is an association of university presidents from around the Pacific Rim established in 1997 by the presidents of

• Caltech (Thomas Everhart) • UC Berkeley (Chang-Lien Tien) • UCLA (Charles Young) • University of Southern California (Steven B Sample)

Who we are

APRU is the international organisation of leading research universities for the Asia- Pacific region

Origins

• 45 leading research universities

• 140,000 faculty members and two million students

• 16 APEC economies, including the world’s three largest

• Dynamic and diverse- 2.8 billion people and 50% of global GDP

Vision Seeing the rapid economic integration of the region and the formation of APEC, their vision was to establish a premier alliance of research universities focused on the advancement of the region. They established it as an advisory body to international organisations, governments and business on the development of science and innovation as well as on the broader development of higher education.

Location Initially headquartered at USC in Los Angeles, the APRU Secretariat is now hosted on the campus of the National University of Singapore, near the APEC Secretariat.

Chairman’s Message

“It is a tremendous honor to serve as chair of APRU during one of the most promising chapters in higher education. As the president of the University of Southern California, I am proud to lead an institution that has long recognized and embraced the tremendous potential and impact of the Pacific Rim. As the world’s center of commerce and culture continues to shift to this remarkable region, members of APRU continue to build bridges of advancement and understanding. At every level – from student to professor, researcher to clinician, and administrator to elected official – the tiles of our institutions form a transformative mosaic of ideas and innovation. Today, economies are looking increasingly to their research universities as a wellspring of solutions to pressing issues. On a global scale, the world is looking more and more to the universities of APRU for leadership in public health, disease prevention, disaster management, sustainability, and climate change. We are uniquely positioned as a laboratory of learning and creating new knowledge to address these issues and others, now and in the future. APRU is also a vital crucible in forging the next generation of leaders to sustain the vigor of the Pacific Rim and confront the challenges that lie ahead. With your involvement, the Century of the Pacific can leave an enduring legacy that crosses continents and generations. “
