Features and Applications

Designed to Suit the Most Important Application...Yours.

Ideally suited for feeding large, lumpy, abrasive and heavymaterials during wet, sticky or frozen operations, MetsoWorld-Class apron feeders work well across a wide variety ofapplications:

• Feeding to and withdrawing from primary crushers

• Loading/unloading trucks and railcars

• Removing frozen materials from storage

• Feeding jaw crushers and belt conveyors

• High-abrasion applications frequently found in reclaimcircuits

Metso World-Class apron feeders should not be mistakenfor “pan or belt feeders” that are typically used in light dutyoperations not requiring the benefits of a true crawler trac-tor-type feeder. The World-Class feeder is offered in variousmodels, and in an infinite range of lengths to meet mostany tonnage requirements. The design is based on parts forthe world’s most popular crawler tractor. Because the partsare interchangeable, the volume of parts kept in stock maybe reduced. Also, parts are readily available at a relativelylow cost.

1 Metso World-Class feeders are commonly installed undersurge bins, silos, and hoppers that require equipment that isdependable. These feeders are installed in the cementindustry to meter wet, sticky material.

2 Custom apron feeder feeding a mill requiring an enclosure towithstand a vacuum-tight seal.

3 Metso standard apron feeders are engineered as a robustdesign and manufactured with attention to details andquality.

4 Metso also designs and manufactures custom apron feedersfor special applications worldwide. Shown here is a specialfeeder with lump breaker, two bed depth gates, and heavy-duty chain drag conveyor - for use in the nickel ore industry.

Head Drive ShaftThe head shaft bearing and sprock-ets are mounted on a heavy-duty,machine drive shaft. Shaft sizes aremanufactured from hot-rolled orforged steel and range from 5.5”(140mm) to 17” (430 mm) diameter, de-pending on power requirements.

Anti-Friction BearingsThe head shaft is mounted on large, double-row, self-aligning spherical roller bearings. These bearings areselected to provide extremely long life to minimizemaintenance requirements and downtime. Allshaft bearings have been designed for a mini-mum of 100,000 hours of B-10 life. Bearings aregrease-lubricated and grease reservoirs are in-cluded in the design of the bearing housingand end caps. The bearings are in cast steelbearing housings and fitted with either stan-dard labyrinth seals for normal environ-ments, or dual flushable (taconite duty)seals for use in extreme conditions. Posi-tive positioning of the head shaft bearingsis ensured by stop blocks welded to themain frame.

Drive SprocketsThe sprockets, which drive the chain, arebolted to the hub with high tension steelbolts. The sprockets are segmented, cast man-ganese alloy steel, machined and jig-driven forproper mounting alignment. The segments are re-versible and designed for easy re-moval. A half tooth design with anodd number of teeth are used to al-low contact with the chain duringevery second revolution, thus dou-bling the life of the sprockets.

Tail Traction WheelA “shaftless tail traction wheel” as-sembly is standard on all MetsoWorld-Class Apron Feeders. This feature does not utilize ashaft or pillow block bearings. The tail wheels are “sealedfor life”and do not require regular lubrication. The hardenedrim face of the tail wheel makes contact with the bottomsurface of the tractor chain and not the pin bushing, andthus does not prematurely wear the chain.

Carrying and Return RollersMetso World-Class apron feeders are equipped with stan-dard tractor-type carrying and return rollers to support thedeck during operation. Both types of rollers are designedand manufactured for long wear and maintenance-freeservice. They also feature lifetime lubricated, fully-sealedbearings.

Carrying rollers are heat-treated, forged alloy steeland have a hardened, ground shaft that is fitted with a cen-ter thrust shoulder. They are closely spaced down the lengthof the feeder to ensure ample support and smooth travel of

the deck during operation.

Return rollers support the deck on its return travel. The rollers are mounted in a fabricated steel bracket whichis bolted to the web of the main support beam. They areequipped with bearings and are lifetime lubricated. The re-turn roller assembly can be easily removed through a holein the web of the frame beam.

Pans (Flights)A variety of pan designs are offered to match differentworking conditions. Metso Minerals will help you choosethe optimum pan for your particular application.

Manganese Pans are used for maximum resistance to highimpact loading and for abrasive operations. The pans arecast from high quality austenitic manganese steel with stiff-ened underside for additional strength. A longitudinal cen-ter rib provides close tolerance to impact rail(s) under the

deck, thereby preventing excessive deflections. During con-tinuous impact applications, manganese pans can be workhardened to achieve a hardness of over 500 Brinell.

Fabricated/Formed Steel Pans are used in applicationswhere extreme impact is not a factor. On widths that utilizean impact rail, an abrasive-resistant wear plate is furnishedon the underside of the pan. Fabricated flights are offeredon models AF4, AF5, and AF10.

All pans are bolted directly to the chain, eliminating theneed for special attachment to the links. High-tensile gradebolts and hardware are used to secure the pans to the links.

Pans feature an overlapping design and provide the tight-est possible seal and leak resistance on the top carry sideand as the pans articulate around the terminal ends.

Flights are protected at the loading point by an impact rail

View looking at drive/discharge end. under the pans.

Cast Alloy Steel Pans are also of-fered for special applications.

Impact RailImpact rails are used to prevent per-manent deformation of the pansduring severe impact loading, yetprovide ample clearance to prevent

pans from dragging. Two impact rails are typically used onfeeders 60” (1524 mm) and wider that have direct impact-ing. (Note: no impact rails furnished with 24”and 30”widths).

Heavy-Duty ChainCrawler tractor type chain is used on all models of Metsoapron feeders. This chain features hardened links, pins

and bushings, all made from heat-treated alloy steel. The chain links are drop-forged for greater weight-carrying capacity and strength. Chain seals prevententry of abrasive foreign materials and prolong chainlife. Two types of chains are used. AF4, 5, 8, and 10 se-ries feeders feature standard sealed crawler tractorchain. Model 12, 14, 16, and 18 feeders use sealed andlubricated S.A.L.T. chain. Final chain type will be de-termined by Metso Minerals for each application.(S.A.L.T. chain is also available as an option for modelsAF5, 8, and 10.) In either case, the chain bushing isshouldered into the outer link to provide the tight-est possible seal between the bushing and the pin.

Therefore, abrasives cannot get in to cause internalwear of the pins and bushings. The possibility of damage

and costly downtime is reduced.

Chain Take-UpChain take-up and adjustment is ac-complished by a threaded rod ex-tended from each side of thetake-up frame. This provides for con-venient, positive adjustment andhelps maintain tail take-up tensions.Hydraulic type take-up can be pro-vided if desired.

Heavy-Duty FrameRobust heavy-duty welded construction frame consists ofmain frame beams and cross members which provide rigidsupport for carry rollers. This outside roller channel can besectioned and bolted to the open beams if necessary.

• Lifting lugs are standard on all Metso feeders

• Frame can be bolted construction to allow for installationin existing facilities

• Metso standard paint provided on all models.
