10MESSAGE FROM THE ZURICH GENERAL DIRECTOR
Our fifth season performing in the Cobb
Energy Centre comes to a close with
this production of Mozart’s highly regarded
Don Giovanni. The genius of Mozart’s music,
and his brilliant combination of comedy and
tragedy, make this opera an ideal introduction
for opera first-timers.
Attracting new opera lovers was top of mind
when I planned our recently announced
2012-13 season. The upcoming season
features two opera classics and the Atlanta
Opera premiere of a hilarious Rossini bel
canto comedy. With Bizet’s sizzling Carmen,
Verdi’s poignant La traviata and Rossini’s
madcap adventure The Italian Girl in
Algiers, it’s a season to savor the extraordinary
drama, enjoy the glorious music and escape
into the vivid and delightful world of opera.
Be sure to visit the table in the lobby today to
renew or purchase a new subscription for this
spectacular season.
For 2012-13, we also unveil a donor benefits
program called MyOpera, a completely new
approach to issuing donor benefits in the
world of the performing arts; continue our
community engagement initiatives, including
the hugely successful 24-Hour Opera
Project and High School Opera Institute;
and present the 2012 Atlanta Opera Ball: A
Night in Seville, a fundraiser supporting and
sustaining the exceptional artistic quality of
The Atlanta Opera.
With each opera production, community
engagement activity or special event, we strive
to provide a memorable opera experience that
reflects the highest quality in musical and
theatrical standards.
We express our deepest gratitude to our
Annual Fund donors for ongoing support of
these efforts. All gifts, regardless of size, are
vitally important to The Atlanta Opera as we
continue our tradition of excellence. If you
enjoy the Don Giovanni performance, I hope
you will consider making a gift to the Opera’s
Annual Fund.
We would like to offer special thanks to
Jane S. Willson and to the Estate of Ms.
Barbara D. Stewart for providing sponsorship
support for this production.
Enjoy Don Giovanni, and please share your
opera experience with family and friends!

ACT I
Leporello, Don Giovanni’s servant, stands
on guard outside the home of Donna
Anna while Don Giovanni, disguised, is
inside attempting to seduce her. As Leporello
waits, he complains about his job. Suddenly,
Don Giovanni comes running out of the
palace. He averts his face from Donna Anna,
not allowing his identity to be revealed.
Donna Anna’s father, the Commendatore,
challenges Don Giovanni to a duel while
Donna Anna runs to find Don Ottavio.
Knowing that he could easily defeat the much
older Commendatore, Don Giovanni refuses
to fight him. The Commendatore persists.
Don Giovanni kills the Commendatore. Don
Giovanni and his servant flee the scene. When
Donna Anna returns with Don Ottavio and
finds her father dead, the two swear to get
vengeance on Don Giovanni.
SYNOpSIS
Leporello accuses Don Giovanni of living the
life of a rogue. Don Giovanni silences him,
denying him the right to speak freely ever
again. Up to his old tricks, Don Giovanni
confesses he has a new love. Leporello wants
the name for the catalogue book where he lists
his master’s conquests — over two thousand
throughout many lands! Donna Elvira,
an ex-lover of Don Giovanni arrives. Don
Giovanni tries to seduce her, she recognizes
him and accuses him of his crime — loving
and leaving. She, too, wants revenge. He
escapes, leaving Leporello to handle the
situation. Leporello tries to comfort her
by showing her the list of the women Don
Giovanni has seduced.
Later, Don Giovanni comes across a party
of villagers celebrating the engagement of
the young and beautiful Zerlina to a fellow
named Masetto. Smitten with Zerlina, Don

Giovanni invites her to his castle. Don
Giovanni promises to marry her, proclaiming
she is too good for the peasant Masetto.
Having watched this scene, Donna Elvira
rushes out of her house to stop Zerlina and
Don Giovanni. She takes Zerlina away and
tells her the truth about Don Giovanni.
Donna Anna and Don Ottavio encounter
Don Giovanni and do not suspect that he is
the Commendatore’s murderer. Donna Elvira
tries to tell the others who Don Giovanni
is — a seducer and betrayer. Don Giovanni
refutes her accusations and explains to Donna
Anna and Don Ottavio that Donna Elvira
is mad. Donna Anna suddenly recognizes
Don Giovanni’s voice as that of her attacker.
Distraught, she tells Don Ottavio of the
attempted rape. Don Ottavio now will
devote himself to discovering the truth for his
beloved Donna Anna.
Leporello again considers quitting but changes
his mind when Don Giovanni congratulates
him on the progress that he reports. Once
again, Leporello saves Don Giovanni from
ruin by getting Donna Elvira out of the way
for the moment.
Masetto accuses Zerlina again of betraying
him with Don Giovanni. Zerlina protests her
innocence. Just as Masetto begins to believe
her, they hear Don Giovanni approaching.
Zerlina wants Masetto to run, arousing his
suspicions again. Masetto hides in a corner
to eavesdrop on Don Giovanni and Zerlina.
Don Giovanni enters the garden and looks for
Zerlina who is hiding from him. He finds her
and tries to take her into the bushes where
Masetto is hiding! Don Giovanni’s attempt
to seduce Zerlina is temporarily stopped by
Masetto. Don Giovanni invites Masetto and
Zerlina into his castle for the masked ball.
Donna Elvira, Don Ottavio, and Donna
Anna arrive at Don Giovanni’s castle masked.
They intend to expose Don Giovanni to
everyone. Don Giovanni dances with Zerlina.
The party is a debauchery. Masetto is forced
to dance with Leporello while Don Giovanni
maneuvers Zerlina into another room.

ACT II
Leporello still wants to leave his master.
He agrees to stay after Don Giovanni buys
him off. Don Giovanni then unveils a new
love interest — Donna Elvira’s maid. He
orders Leporello to change cloaks with him.
Donna Elvira appears on the balcony. Feeling
sympathy for Don Giovanni (Leporello in
disguise), she descends from the balcony.
Leporello is amazed at how easy it is to entice
her. Don Giovanni tells Leporello to hide his
face, woo her, and take her away. Meanwhile,
Don Giovanni moves on to romancing
the maid. Don Giovanni is interrupted by
Masetto and some peasants who are looking
for Don Giovanni but don’t recognize him in
his disguise. Don Giovanni sends them away.
Zerlina and Masetto enter the courtyard
where Leporello, to his chagrin, is pretending
to romance Donna Elvira. All believe
Leporello is Don Giovanni and start to gang
up on him. Leporello finally must reveal who
he really is. Donna Elvira is again hurt by this
most recent betrayal.
Leporello meets Don Giovanni in the
graveyard where he is hiding. Leporello arrives
and tells Don Giovanni that he was almost
killed. Don Giovanni replies that it would
have been an honor. Don Giovanni tells
Leporello of his latest adventure with the maid.
The conversation between Don Giovanni
and Leporello is interrupted by a frightening
laugh from the statue of the Commendatore.
Leporello reads with much fear the inscription
on the statue’s base: “Here I await the vengeance
on the impious man who killed me.” Acting
unshaken, Don Giovanni asks Leporello to
invite the statue to dinner. The statue accepts
the invitation.
At Don Giovanni’s castle, Donna Elvira begs
Don Giovanni to give up his debauched life.
He refuses. As she leaves, the statue arrives to
join Don Giovanni for dinner. Don Giovanni
hears Donna Elvira scream and orders
Leporello to see what caused it. Leporello, too,
is scared by this mysterious figure. He begs
Don Giovanni to stay away. Don Giovanni
opens the door and is amazed to see the statue.
The statue offers Don Giovanni repentance.
Don Giovanni refuses. The statue accepts
his offer to dine together. The statue shakes
hands with Don Giovanni and in so doing
drags him to hell. Donna Anna, Donna Elvira,
Don Ottavio, and Zerlina later look for Don
Giovanni. Leporello explains what happened.
Don Ottavio asks Donna Anna for her hand.
She agrees, but after one more year of mourning.
Donna Elvira states that she will retire to a
convent. Zerlina and Masetto go home for
dinner. Leporello must find a new master. n

Don Giovanni’s Legend Lives On
BY FAITh DAWSON
Don Giovanni is the villain audiences love
to hate. Or do they? Often described as
a rake or a libertine, those labels don’t really do
him justice.
After all, he’s best known as a relentless skirt-
chaser, but then he adds murder to his list of
misdeeds – and is not too troubled by it. And
so it goes with the arrogant nobleman.
Don Giovanni is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s
musical retelling of the Spanish Don Juan
legend. By 1787, when the opera made its
debut as “Il dissoluto punito” or “The Rake
Punished,” the character was already a fixture
in literature and folklore as Seville’s most
famous sex offender.
Don’t be too quick to judge, though.
Giovanni may be a miscreant by today’s
standards, but in the 17th century (and into
following centuries) his behavior was more,
well, acceptable.
“It is not always his intention to harm. He
is, however, extremely selfish,” says Atlanta
Opera Music Director Arthur Fagen. “For
many years he was considered the epitome of
the ‘rogue romantic’ or ‘rogue seducer.’”
“We find him fascinating because he gets
away with it,” says Stage Director Richard
Kagey. Meaning, nobody is particularly
pulling for Giovanni, but he’s fun to watch.
(Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera
may be pulling for him. Remember “Don
Juan Triumphant?”)
The plot: A womanizer of legendary
proportions, Giovanni sets his lecherous eye
on Donna Anna, who’s engaged to someone
else. But when Giovanni corners her, Anna’s
father interrupts Giovanni’s advances – and
ends up dead on the back streets of Seville.

From then on, while Giovanni carries on
the business of ruining women’s virtue,
characters – including a grieving daughter,
a wronged noblewoman, and a couple of
jealous beaux – seek their revenge on him.
It takes a touch of the supernatural – a
statue lumbering out of a graveyard and into
Giovanni’s dining room – to drag him off to
hell, literally.
Both Arthur Fagen and Richard Kagey have
six to seven productions of Don Giovanni
to their credit. (According to the OPERA
America organization, Don Giovanni is
among the most-performed operas today.)
After so many productions, the essence of the
work emerges.
“You don’t need to do more than tell it well,”
Kagey says of this timeless story. “You don’t
need all the bells and whistles.”
Giovanni’s heartless enterprise plays out over
two acts of seria-buffa opera, with a thrilling
and nuanced score by Mozart and an often
cheeky libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte.
The dialogue (in Italian, with projected English
translations), often delivered in crisp but
impassioned recitative, underscores Giovanni’s
artful and cunning nature, which makes him
seem clever and creepy at the same time.
“He is one of those people who, when he is
making love to whomever he is making love,
he is completely committed to them,” Kagey
stresses. “It’s almost a compulsion.”
Italian bass Andrea Concetti, debuting with
The Atlanta Opera, has already tackled
the role of Giovanni’s beleaguered servant,
Leporello. Here hewill sing the title role.
Over the years, certain scenes have come
and gone, including the dual endings that
Mozart penned. The Atlanta Opera will end
the production with the traditional epilogue
(“Questo è il fin”), although in either version
Giovanni’s fate is sealed.
The vengeful statue may have had the last
laugh, but Giovanni’s legend lives on. Only
his trail of broken hearts finally comes to a
dead end. n

Q&A with Dennis HanthornBY elleN STurgIll
Next season, Atlanta audiences can
expect to “escape the ordinary” by
experiencing three of the most beloved
operas in the canon: Carmen, La traviata, and
The Italian Girl in Algiers. Zurich General
Director, Dennis Hanthorn explains why he
chose these operas and what audiences can
look forward to.
AriA: Why did you choose Carmen, La
traviata, and The Italian Girl in Algiers for
the 2012-13 season?
Dennis HAntHorn: Carmen is one of
the four all-time great operas – including Aida,
La bohème, and Don Giovanni – that people
want to see. It is incredibly popular and
contains music that people can hum along to.
Out of Verdi’s 28 operas, La traviata is one of
his most famous and most performed operas.
2013 is also the bicentennial year of his birth,
so it is exciting to commemorate Verdi’s life
with a production of one of his operas.
The Italian Girl in Algiers is one of Rossini’s
best-loved comic operas and will be a debut
production for The Atlanta Opera. It promises
to be a fun experience for the audience, as
well as a look into a fantastic 19th-century
bel canto work.
AriA: the theme for this season is “escape
the ordinary.” How does this theme speak to
the opera experience? Why do you think this
theme represents the three operas of the season,
and how does it relate to Atlanta audiences?
DH: Carmen is one of the most exciting,
entertaining, and passionate operas ever
written. There are so many characters that
audiences can relate to. They can place
themselves in Spain, and imagine what it
would be like to be a soldier or a gypsy. La
traviata, depicts the high society of Paris
before the French Revolution, which was a
very glamorous and elegant time in history.
We’ve decided to set our production
of The Italian Girl in Algiers in the 1930’s,
with Isabella as an aviator, which adds an
“Amelia Earhart-like” quality to this already
imaginative destination.
The pop-up book set also adds another element
of the fantastical. Italian Girl in Algiers is also
unique in the opera world because it turns the
table on the traditional “rescue opera.” In this
production, the woman is the hero.
For each of these operas, there is an
excitement in the unknown and exotic
locations, and we hope this will allow
Atlanta audiences to “Escape the Ordinary.”
We also hope that new audiences will “escape

the ordinary” by trying an opera experience
for the first time. These operas are great
introductions for first-timers!
AriA: the Atlanta opera will be producing
The Italian Girl in Algiers for the first time.
Why has it taken more than 30 years for the
Atlanta opera to produce this rossini comedy?
DH: There certainly has been a large gap in
the history of Rossini repertoire that has been
produced here at the Opera. However, in my
eight seasons at The Atlanta Opera, we have
produced The Barber of Seville, Cinderella,
and now, Italian Girl.
I particularly love Rossini’s music, and there
are singers today who specialize in singing
Rossini very well. I am excited that we have
identified some of them for Italian Girl.
Atlanta audiences can expect a high level of
talent and delightful performances.
AriA: Describe the concept for The Italian
Girl in Algiers. How does setting the opera
in the 1930’s change the characterization?
DH: When changing or updating a production,
you still must remain true to the original
direction and characterization of the opera.
Isabella, Lindoro, and Mustafà (to name a few
characters) will retain their original qualities.
Yet the time and place will be different.
Changing the period of the piece adds a fresh
perspective to both performers and audiences
alike, and lends itself to the exotic feel we are
capturing with this 2012-13 season.
Audiences can also look forward to a highly
innovative set design. Instead of a standard
set, with pieces moving in and out, the stage
will have the feel of a pop-up children’s story,
which will bring a lot of whimsy and fantasy
to the opera.
During the Atlanta Opera’s Season Snapshot event, Zurich General Director Dennis Hanthorn announced The Italian Girl in Algiers as part of the 2012-2013 season.

36Q&A (continued)
AriA: each opera in the 2012-13 season
contains a very powerful and iconic female
role. What can Atlanta audiences expect
from Maria José Montiel as Carmen, Mary
Dunleavy as Violetta, and sandra Piques
eddy as isabella?
Atlanta audiences can expect a very authentic
portrayal of Carmen in Maria José Montiel.
Because of her native Spanish culture, her
interpretation is believable, and she is able
to bring a special flavor to the performance.
Maria is in high-demand, and performs in
Europe, as well as all over the U.S. We are
looking forward to having her sing on our
stage in her Atlanta Opera debut.
Mary Dunleavy has performed Violetta
many times around the world. This is one
of her signature roles. This production will
also be her debut with us. I’m just so pleased
and proud to bring her to Atlanta. She is a
tremendous actor and musician, and gives a
very exciting interpretation of Violetta. She
will thrill our audiences.
Sandra Piques Eddy sang the role of
Cherubino in our 2008 production of The
Marriage of Figaro, and we are pleased to
have her back. She is a consummate artist as
far as Rossini and classical repertoire goes.
She performs many styles of opera, but
thoroughly understands Rossini style and
technique. Sandra is also one of the great
mezzos of our day.
AriA: What are you most looking forward
to in the 2012-13 season?
DH: We are looking forward to broadening
our audience. I am excited to produce the
highest-quality opera possible, and know that
audiences will enjoy the performances! n

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
For more than 30 years, The Atlanta
Opera has been committed to
producing operas of the highest caliber and
presenting to audiences all over the metro
Atlanta area. Today, our commitment to
introducing and educating audiences to
the opera art form remains an integral part
of our organizational mission. Through
interactive performances and creative
programs we provide many opportunities
for both patrons and new audiences to
explore and experience opera.
While Don Giovanni marks the end of our
mainstage season we have many more exciting
events to look forward to over the spring and
summer months.
Our annual Opera Family Day will take place
on Saturday, May 12, at The Atlanta Opera
Center. This fun event offers families and
young children an opportunity to learn about
and celebrate opera. Activities will include
an interactive costume shop, crafts and stage
combat and makeup demonstrations as
well as one last chance to see Rabbit Tales,
our opera for children. Based on the Br’er
Rabbit stories and written and composed by
Atlanta-based artists, Rabbit Tales has strong
regional ties and completed a successful tour
to more than 36 schools in Georgia this year,
presenting a total of 62 performances in
schools and communities.
Students in our High School Opera Institute
have been working hard all year, honing
their craft as musicians. The program will
culminate with a showcase performance at
4 p.m., Sunday, June 10, at Morningside
Presbyterian Church. This performance is
free and open to the public. Now in its third
year, the Atlanta Opera High School Opera
Institute is a training program for students
in grades 10-12 who are looking to pursue a
career in music. Participating students work
with opera professionals throughout the year
in vocal coachings and diction and dramatic
master classes. Applications for the 2012-13
High School Opera Institute will be available
on our website June 1 through Aug. 24.
For teachers interested in exploring opera
in their classroom, our Music!Words!Opera!
training institute will take place at The Atlanta
Opera Center July 9-13. Music!Words!Opera!
is an arts-integrated curriculum for classroom
teachers of all grade levels and subject areas.
Participating educators will receive training
from OPERA America professionals as well as
access to Atlanta Opera benefits throughout
the year.
