Inside ICS Volume 4, Issue 8 April/May 2011 Monk Day by Sherri Williams The teachers agree that this was one of the best Monk Days ever. The students enjoyed each activity and were very serious about keeping their vow of silence all morning long. We opened and closed the day with singing, Scripture reading and prayer. We learned that the art of pretzel making was created by monks in 610 AD. They were to be in the shape of the arms of children folded in prayer. Our Scriptorium was a very serious place of intense concentration. Candle making was a highlight (pun intended) with a variety of shapes from short and stubby to long and thin. Finally we made a “transparent stained glass ornament” but learned much about the art and architecture of the church in the process. Thanks to all our Monk Day volunteers: David Slagle, Beth Moreman, Christen Warner, Cindy Bowers, Susan Pence, and Angie Tatum! We could not do all we do without parent participation!!! Evening, and morning, and at noon will I pray, and cry aloud; and He shall hear my voice. Esprit de CorpsEach year at Esprit we are amazed and awed by the talent God has bestowed upon His children. This year we sawquilts, paintings, photographs, castles, lego creations, clay figures, knitting, and many other displays of creativity andtalent. Then, to top it all off, we had an evening of fun, laughter and desserts at our annual Café and Variety Show.Below are some pictures that show just a taste of what we enjoyed. Thanks are due to our Esprit Chair, Lynn Leonard, and her talented team, including Eveie deWitt, Visual Arts; Susan Pence, Visual Arts; Kelli Sasser, Visual Arts; BeckyHoover, Variety Show; Jeanie Carr, Variety Show; Jeanne Freeman, 8th Grade Bake Sale; Joell Rickman, Café Decor;Shannon Vogt, Café and Culinary Arts. And a special thanks to all of those who participated, whether they be students, family or friends!

Is it a painting or a photo? Only Jim Choate knows for sure!

Parents get to enjoy home baked goodies at the 8th Gradebake sale during parent meeting.

John Lyons shows his painting talent with “Flowers”done in oil.

The 2nd Grade class did a collage of paintings based on the hymn“All Things Bright and Beautiful.”

The 6th grade Tybee trip was a big hit! It was a great timeto be educated, talk freely with your friends, and have funbeing yourself. We arrived at the school around 6:00 a.m.,loaded our vans and set off for our four hour car ride.

After we arrived we dove right in to our lessons. In our SurfSleuth lesson, we practiced fishing with a big net. Somestudents even swallowed a few fish! In our Reptile and In-vertebrates lessons, we got to see, touch, and sometimeshold real animals. In our Maritime Forest studies we got toidentify different plants and trees in the forest with flashcards containing information, but we had to be careful notto step in ant hills! In our Marsh Ecology lesson, we got to touch live animals, go to the marsh, and eat sea pickles(salty plants that get their food from the salty earth). We got to touch crabs and starfish, and we got to fish for stuffoff a dock. They also taught us about the tides. In the Beach Ecology lesson we got to go down to the beach and takeoff our shoes, and we took notes about beach animals and shells. We got to hold a cannon jellyfish. One night we hada Night Walk on the beach where we learned about the senses that grow stronger when we can’t see as well. The nextday we went on a school-led walk to the beach where we buried each other in the sand and played in the waves. We

roasted marshmallows over a bonfire onenight and we got to go to the canteen(concession stand) during our free time.We had free time between each of ourclasses for 15-20 minutes. During thattime we had to get ready for the upcom-ing class and we also got to play around. There was a volleyball court, a basketballcourt, and a tether ball court.

The leaders were all very nice. The gnatswere really the only bad part of the trip.Overall, the trip was a great success! Wethank the chaperones and teachers forkeeping things so organized on the trip.

Watch out for the jelly Ethan!

Did Leif or didn’t Leif—eat the fish, that is.

They look like they’re having a great time.

Intown Students Compete for World Title!by Laurie Schunk

Matthew Tatum (7th Grade) and Graham Schunk (8th Grade)are traveling to the University of Maryland this Memorial Dayweekend to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competitionthat challenges student teams to demonstrate their ingenuity bycompleting a challenge. Matthew and Graham are part of aseven-member team that chose the “Extreme Mousemobile”challenge, one of five presented as part of this year’s competi-tion. In this challenge, teams design, build and run vehicles thatuse mousetraps as their only source of energy. These vehicles arerequired to complete six tasks, such as raising a flag, hitting atarget, and making a delivery, as part of an eight-minute, origi-nal performance. Backdrops, costumes, and props, all designed and made by the team, are also part of the scripted presentation.

Dubbed the “Avondale Scouts,” Graham and Matthew’s team began their work last fall. After much trial and errorwith their mechanical designs, script changes (including the addition of a trumpet!) and hours of rehearsal, the boysscored wins at Region and State. They now qualify to compete in the World Finals. None of the boys have ever partici-pated in Odyssey before this year, which makes their success an exciting surprise. Matthew and Graham are lookingforward to their trip to Maryland and the chance to see how far this “odyssey” will take them!

Ancient Greek TheaterBy Juliana Bell

With a packed house in the Youth Loft, the 4th grade brought to life the tale of the legendary King Midas of Phrygia, who was supposedly the richest man to ever live.

Closely resembling Ancient Greek Theater, each student dressed in all black, and wore a mask that reflected the per-sonality of their character throughout the play. Although the masks covered the facial expressions of the actors andactresses, the 4th graders did an excellent job of telling the story with their words and verbal expression.

Several weeks were spent preparing for the play. Masks were created for every character, lines were memorized, and re-hearsals took place in the last few weeks preceding the play. Every class took on one part of the three-part play, andwhat a wonderful job they did in transporting their audience back to Ancient Greece!
