On Sunday, April 28, Gethsemane will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ELCA was formed when former
Lutheran bodies, the American Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church in America,
and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches merged to form the largest
Lutheran denomination in America. The constituting convention of the ELCA took
place in Columbus, OH April 30 - May 3, 1987 after several years of discussion and
negotiations. Since Gethsemane was one of the only AELC churches in the area,
many of our members were a vital part of those discussions and the final
convention. The ELCA was officially formed on January 1, 1988. On Sunday, April
28, our own Violet Meek who was a part of the discussions, negotiations, and
assembly will preach and will lead the education hour with input from others who
were involved.

Experience Easter
Through Holy Week and Easter, we go through the
cycle that we go through every year: Jesus eats with
friends, Jesus is arrested and killed, Jesus is dead,
Jesus rises from the tomb. Easter is the culmination of
these days, the exciting conclusion to the story. It’s a
great event. But we know next year, we will do the
story all over again the same way. Back to the
beginning, again and again.
It’s important to know that we share the last week in
Jesus and Easter, not just because they are events that
deserve commemorating like Independence Day or
President’s Day. Holy Week and Easter are what we
experience as human beings in this world.
We live and make relationships, we suffer and feel
pain, and we die. Not just our eventual, final death,
but all the smaller disappointments and endings and
devastations that we experience on the way: the
death of loved ones, the ending of a long time dream,
financial hardships. And then we all actually do die in
the end. All of those things are just realities of life.
Everyone in all sorts of religions can agree on that
observation.
But here’s where Christians have a unique spin on the
whole life thing: we believe that after all those things,
God makes new things happen. We believe that little
deaths (and big deaths) are not the end. Are never the
end. Rebirth, new life, resurrection. We believe in the
miracles that God can do in us and through us even
after death, small and large.
So this Easter season, I hope that you don’t just come
to Easter Sunday Worship to remember an event in
the past. I pray that you experience the promise of
hope and love and forgiveness in your life today and
every day.
Easter Blessings,
Rev. June Wilkins
Gethsemane joins B.R.E.A.D
In the March meeting, our Congregation Council voted
to become a member of B.R.E.A.D., the Columbus area
justice organization. The mission of B.R.E.A.D is “to
draw upon the strength of people of faith to act on
issues of justice and fairness in the Greater Columbus
area.“
Each year, through a process of house meeting, voting
and consensus building B.R.E.A.D agrees on an issue to
research and work towards resolving. For 2013, the
congregations of B.R.E.A.D chose to focus on
discrimination against immigrants in our city.
Our Gethsemane B.R.E.A.D team includes Darlene
Norman, David Norman, Wendy Luedke and Lee Ann
Perrin. The congregation is invited to join in on the
Rally on April 8th at Tifereth Israel Synagogue at
6:30pm. And the Nehemiah Action on May 6th at the
Celeste Center at 6:15. B.R.E.A.D relies on the
attendance of the member churches and the strength
of numbers to influence politicians and leaders to
make good and just decisions. If you have any
questions about any of these events, you can ask one
of our team members.

Bag It
Leader – Joanne Leussing,
Environmental Stewardship Ministry Team
Plastic seems to be indispensable to everyone's life.
But it is made from non-renewable oil, a lot of oil, and
seldom used more than once. The film Bag It focuses
on the downside of plastic in a humorous and com-
pelling manner. It forces us to see that plastic trash is
everywhere: clogging waterways, forming immense
trash piles in the oceans, and killing marine life.
Landfills are overloaded with this stuff that takes years
to break down. Chemicals in plastic appear to be
affecting people's health. Scientists are interviewed as
the film puts the whole picture together. Can we live
without plastic? The main character gives it a good-
natured try. Come to see the film and be a part of our
Earth Day discussion on caring for God's creation.

On Our Way Rejoicing:
The ELCA Comes to Columbus
Leader – Rev. Violet Meek
How did the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
come into being? Where? Why? Who? What was it
supposed to be? All questions appropriate to a 25th
Anniversary. They are especially appropriate here at
Gethsemane because our congregation was right in
the thick of the action right here in Columbus when
the ELCA Constituting Convention came to town. On
that day, twenty-five years ago, three separate
Lutheran church bodies came together out of the
conviction that we could better serve God’s kingdom
and God’s people together than we could separately.
The road to unity was bumpy and messy. There were
speeches, demonstrations, high drama, and
sometimes the sound of heavenly laughter. Many of
us were there; some of us were actually the planners.
All of us were the pray-ers. Remember the dream as
we plan for the future.
Violet Meek, now a Gethsemane member, was an LCA
representative to the Ohio Transition Team, Chair of
the Southern Ohio Synod Transition Team, and Co-
Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee for the
constituting convention.

Brown Bag Bible Bash Resumes
The group resumes again the Wednesday following
Easter, April 3, at 12:00 noon.
Straying from the usual path for a few weeks the
group will use material primarily from the Lutheran
Study Bible, pages 19-27 and 1521-1552.
The topics are:
Apr. 3 – An Introduction to the Bible – what is it and
what is in it?
Apr. 10 – Martin Luther on the Bible – how he read it
– law and Gospel – is it the word of God? –
understanding and interpreting the scriptures.
Apr. 17 – The Small Catechism, a simple guide for the
Book of Faith, and, Lutheran insights that open the
Bible – five key principles.
Apr. 24 – What should we expect when we read the
Bible?, and, the Bible and God’s Mission – looking at
the Bible from the view of the people in it.
May 1 – We resume our normal study of a book of the
Bible – to be determined by the class.
Come join us is the library, add your insights OR just
soak up the discussion. We enjoy this!!
Tidbits from our children and
youth . . .
The Sunday School kids were able to assemble 66
birthday bags for the children served by the Homeless
Family Foundation in downtown Columbus. Every
child deserves a birthday treat! Thank you for helping
our children be a part of another child’s special day.
Thank you to Kelly Fleming for coordinating this
project.
The children have been exploring the “40 days” stories
of the Bible during Lent - David and Goliath, Noah
(including a visit from “Mrs. Noah”, aka Joyce Geary),
Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness.
Easter morning at 9am, they will ‘unbury’ the
A******* banner that they buried in February.
Wonder what they might find . . .
Our youth, middle and high school, invite the
congregation to join them for breakfast on Easter
Sunday. Food (egg casserole, scalloped apples,
muffins) will be served from 8-9am in the Great Hall.
No cost; donations will help fund youth activities,
including the 2015 National Youth Gathering in
Detroit.
Our confirmands will serve at the LSS Food Pantry on
Saturday April 6. They bring a special ray of hope to
those they serve. The class will also worship with our
Swahili community on Sunday, May 5. Perhaps learn a
few Swahili words??

Week of the Young Child
April 14—20
The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual
celebration sponsored by the National Association for
the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The
purpose of the Week of the Young Child™ is to focus
public attention on the needs of young children and
their families and to recognize the early childhood
programs and services that meet those needs. Play &
Learn will celebrate this week by doing special things
for the children each day of that week including
having a family lunch, spring concert, and center-wide
pajama party and also giving the children cards, small
gifts, and special surprises.
Playground Work & Renovations
– Can you help us?
We plan to have a playground work day(s) in April.
This year we plan to till the playgrounds, spread new
mulch, remove/replace certain pieces of equipment,
sand and paint the metal climber on the front
playground, remove/replace sand in the sandbox on
the front playground, mend/replace sections of the
fencing, and make other necessary repairs. If you are
able to come and bring your garden tiller, wheel-
barrow, rake, shovel, etc. and help with the renova-
tions, we would surely appreciate it. Thanks so
much!!!!
Campbells Labels - Keep clipping those Campbells
labels/points. They add up and help us to purchase
classroom supplies and equipment.
Prayerful Support - Play and Learn appreciates your
continued prayers for the staff, children, and
families.

Stuff
the
Truck
for LSS!
On Saturday, April 27, Mary Woodward of Lutheran
Social Services will be at Gethsemane to help us, other
congregations, and our neighborhood to “Stuff the
Truck”! We will be “Stuffing the Truck” with all sorts
of items to help Lutheran Social Services help those
people that are suffering from disasters like torna-
does, fires, and floods. She will be accepting furniture,
collectables, baby and children’s items, large and
small appliances, knick knacks, working electronics,
towels, bedding … just about any household item that
is in clean and working condition (no clothing, grown-
up books or used mattresses or box springs please.)
We need lots of Gethsemane volunteers for this
event: people to move heavy items, move light items,
people to direct visitors, give out receipts, distribute
information about Gethsemane, and also help with
lunch and water for volunteers. We need the whole
congregation in other words! Sign up in the narthex to
help. This project is funded by West Franklin County
Chapter of Thrivent Financial.
Gethsemane's Quilting Project
Receives Thrivent Funding
We are excited to learn that once again our Lutheran
World Relief quilting project has received $1600 from
the West Franklin County Chapter of Thrivent
Financial. This grant allows us to purchase the fabric
for quilt backs as well as the batting and thread. The
quilt tops are mostly made from donated fabrics but
are supplemented with purchased fabric if needed.
The funding gives us the opportunity to create as
many quilts as we can to serve others in need around
the world. What a wonderful way to use our talents
and time! Thank you Thrivent!
Some interesting facts about LWR quilts -- 412,710
quilts were shipped to parts around the world in 2012.
23 countries were served with quilt shipments.
Tanzania received 80,685 of those quilts, more than
any other country.
FROM THE LWR QUILT WEBSITE -
Why Quilts? Why Now? LWR Mission Quilts are
valuable tools in Lutheran World Relief’s work to end
poverty, injustice and human suffering. Making LWR
Mission Quilts provides an opportunity for Lutherans
in the U.S. to answer God’s call to love and serve our
neighbors in need. To those that receive them, they are
a tangible symbol of God’s love and compassion. And
to our partners, they provide an opportunity to reach
out to communities with important information and
services. For those and many more reasons, LWR
Mission Quilts are our most requested items. LWR
strives to provide as many Quilts as possible to our
partners but our supply is limited. That’s why in 2013,
we’re challenging Lutherans to come together to send
500,000 LWR Mission Quilts — an increase of
approximately 25 percent or 100,000 Quilts over
previous years — around the world to people in need
through the 2013 LWR Quilt Campaign.

VIOLET MEEK
209 W. Beechwold Blvd.
Columbus, OH 43214
614-262-4714
Violet said she is happily "returning home" to her Gethsemane family and to
again be sharing membership in the same church with husband Don Dell. She
retired as Dean at OSU - Lima campus, but "failed retirement" and was ordained by the ELCA on 9/11/2005. She
served a total of ten years as pastor at Emanuel Lutheran in the Lancaster area and is now trying retirement
again! Violet has lived in the Chicago area and in Milwaukee where she attended the same school Jeff Luedke
later attended and went to the same church as Wendy. She has a daughter working on Broadway in New York City
and a son working as a metalsmith in San Jose. Both are artists with MFA degrees. She and Don share Don's seven
grandchildren ages 3-18. They also are co-chairs of the Trinity Lutheran Seminary Foundation. Violet is a former
chair of the Seminary Board of Directors and is working on the 25th anniversary celebration of the ELCA scheduled
for April 28. She is also a member of the Board of Directors, Deaconess Community and sings in the Seminary's
community choir.
DONNA ROUSH

Donna lives close to Gethsemane on Broad Meadows. She likes the church
location, its smaller size and friendly, welcoming atmosphere. A former
Methodist, Donna is new to Lutheranism and is happy being here. She is
originally from Lancaster and has a sister in Powell and a brother in Logan. She retired after working in the claims
area in auto insurance. Now she provides pet therapy, not with a dog, but with her cat at a nursing home. Donna
has two pet cats who are sisters, Betty and Evie. She likes reading, especially religious materials and animal
stories.

Carole followed her daughter Pastor June Wilkins to Ohio after having moved
from New York - Brooklyn & Queens to Houston, Texas and then to San Jose,
California. Another daughter, Kathryn, lives in Texas and Carole has a grandson named Anthony. Carole worked in
medical billing for 20 years. She likes to read - especially mysteries and historical novels. The History channel on
TV brings many good programs including those on archeology. Perhaps her embroidery will fill the time as she
heals from recent foot surgery required in preparation for her second knee replacement probably this summer.
She admitted to being a good cook when I asked for her recipe for the wonderful soup she brought to a recent

Worthington, OH 43085
Scott – 614-517-6573
Celia – 614-314-6011
Celia and Scott Conlon are long time residents of the area but are new
members because they came to church with her mother Kathleen Vergamini, herself a relatively new member,
and were so pleased with the support and sympathy from Gethsemane's pastor and members at the death of her
father the end of 2012. Both Celia and Scott are graduates of Thomas Worthington High School as are sons
John who is nineteen and a freshman at OSU studying economics and 22-year-old Ryan, an OSU senior studying
Public Policy. Ryan and John also went to Colonial Hills Elementary and Kilbourne Middle School. The family
moved from a Rush Creek house to another house in Rush Creek - they are now in the "round house" for those
who know the area. Scott is an architect working for the OSU Facilities Planning Department. Celia works in
downtown Columbus for U.S. Bank in commercial lending making decisions whether or not to approve loans. Both
Scott and Celia like to read (historical fiction, biographies among others), hang out with their family, and travel,
especially being outdoors and hiking. They are heading off to hike and relax in the Smoky Mountains in North
Carolina soon. Scott is also active on the Rush Creek Architectural Review Board.
DON HUINER
8372 Cliffthorne Way
Columbus, OH 43235
614-885-1589
Many of you know Don Huiner, a long time member who is returning after
three years of being gone and is already happily singing again in the choir. Don
is a native of Chicago who joined in the early 1980s with his wife and daughter, who have both since passed away.
Though Don is retired from jobs in sales and not-for-profit fundraising, he has used his sales and caring skills as a
volunteer at Home Reach Hospice the past nine years as well as ten years as a volunteer with Lifeline of Ohio
promoting organ and tissue donation and speaking at many Health Fairs during the year. He says his involvement
is the result of daughter Erica's lung transplant and her caring and volunteering spirit. She has friends who are still
volunteering in her memory at the nursing home she and her mom volunteered/worked in many years ago.
JULIETH MACHA
1850 North Star Rd., #24
Columbus, OH 43212
614-316-4685
Julieth came to Gethsemane because she is a Lutheran and happy with the
church here. She came from Tanzania with her aunt in 2000 and has been a
citizen since 2008. She misses her family including her 18-year-old daughter
who lives in Tanzania with Julieth's sister. She came to have a better life leaving her job as an elementary school
teacher teaching English and many other subjects to many different classes every day. She works two jobs here -
as a housekeeper at Grant Medical Center and as a Home Care Giver. She says it's hard work for not enough
money but she likes living here.
