benefit of its employee and of the towns along its tine The collection grew quite slowly but the work excited so much interest that Mr St John brought the matter to the atten- tion of Mr Andrew Carnegie whose phi- lanthropic gifts have done much in aid of libraries in the South The matter was given Instant attention by the steel king who inclosed his check to Mr St John for 1000 in aid of the scheme which he pronounced entirely original on the part of a railway com- pany and most praiseworthy He re- quested occasional reports of the progress of the work Mr St Johns scheme is to send the libraries from town to town putting them in each place under the care of an assistant industrial agent of the line and free access may be had to the library by the townspeople the books oelng re from Fort Monroe on their long journey to Manila The troops will take none of their heavy guns with them but will go overland In light marching order to San Francisco where on the 18th they will board The cases grew out of the failure of C W Hillers and wife who agreed to purchase from J Taylor Thorn ton the elegant Belle Grove estate to meet their payments They paid 5uO cash took possession and refused to vacate when the deferred payments were not met Mr J T Thornton and his brother Grayson Thornton on February I went to Belle Grove and notified the Hillers that they must give the property During the conversation Mrs Hillers sprang at J T Thornton and slapped his face Thornton caught her by the wrists and held her while she kicked his shins While this was going on young Hillers and Grayson Thornton had a tight When quiet was restored the Hillers agreed to leave They did so two days later They however swore out four or five warrants against the Thorntons for assault c and when the cases came up before Jus- tices the Thorntons were heavily fined They appealed to the Coumy Court where the decisions of the Justices were set aside and all the warrants dismissed The case Cumberland Md April J S Eckford of Portsmouth Va about sixty five years old shot himself through the head on the street here today He was removed to the jail and tonight there are hopes of his recovery Eckford is a professor of music and a piano tuner He dresses well and wears- a flowing white beard He stood nearly two hours this morning with his hat oft at the place he shot himself While stand- Ing in front of Mr Swartzweklers house Prof Eckford called to the latter to go and stand by a tree nearby Mr Swart welder wanted to know why he shouid do so Eckford replied 1 want you to witness something I am going to kill myself At the same time he drew a re- volver Dr Richard Gerstcll who came along heard part of the conversation and said For Gods sake man dont do anything like that and at the same time proceeded to move toward the aged man as If to disarm him Eckford told him at once to stand back or he would kill him Dr Gerstell with drew and then Eckford fired and fell to the pavement Eckford was carried to the jail bleeding but not unconscious Eckford was resting well tonight his pulse and temperature being normal and his condition rational He was smoking a pipe and now and then would repeat that he was a Virginia gentleman Four physicians consulted and decided to trephine the skull In the morning at the Western Maryland Hospital where he will be removed in order to find the bullet After the shooting Eckford positively re- fused to give particulars concerning him- self His satchel and trunk were search- ed at his boardinghouse and In the lat ter were found lute linen piano tuners tools Knights of Pythias buttons and other articles On top of the clothes was a note which read as follows The reasons for my killing myself are nobodys business From a customary cu- riosity people meddle and inquire into things that concern them not Let the law take its course I am solely and only responsible for being dead I recognize- no God for there is none The circulating library for the benefit of itsemployee and of the towns along its tineThe collection grew quite slowly but thework excited so much interest that MrSt John brought the matter to the atten-tion of Mr Andrew Carnegie whose phi-lanthropic gifts have done much in aid oflibraries in the South

The matter was given Instant attentionby the steel king who inclosed his checkto Mr St John for 1000 in aid of thescheme which he pronounced entirelyoriginal on the part of a railway com-pany and most praiseworthy He re-

quested occasional reports of the progressof the work

Mr St Johns scheme is to send thelibraries from town to town puttingthem in each place under the care of anassistant industrial agent of the lineand free access may be had to the libraryby the townspeople the books oelng retainel ten days The plan has excitedwidespread interest

HHlersThornton cases which have beenfiguring in the courts of King GeorgeCounty for some time have finally cometo a close The cases grew out of thefailure of C W Hillers and wife whoagreed to purchase from J Taylor Thornton the elegant Belle Grove estate tomeet their payments They paid 5uO cashtook possession and refused to vacatewhen the deferred payments were notmet Mr J T Thornton and his brotherGrayson Thornton on February I wentto Belle Grove and notified the Hillersthat they must give the property

During the conversation Mrs Hillerssprang at J T Thornton and slapped hisface Thornton caught her by the wristsand held her while she kicked his shinsWhile this was going on young Hillersand Grayson Thornton had a tight Whenquiet was restored the Hillers agreed toleave They did so two days later Theyhowever swore out four or five warrantsagainst the Thorntons for assault cand when the cases came up before Jus-tices the Thorntons were heavily fined

They appealed to the Coumy Courtwhere the decisions of the Justices wereset aside and all the warrants dismissedThe case attracted wide attention andable counsel was employed on both sides

Eckford is a professor of music and apiano tuner He dresses well and wears-a flowing white beard He stood nearlytwo hours this morning with his hat oftat the place he shot himself While stand-Ing in front of Mr Swartzweklers houseProf Eckford called to the latter to goand stand by a tree nearby Mr Swartwelder wanted to know why he shouiddo so Eckford replied 1 want you towitness something I am going to killmyself At the same time he drew a re-

volver Dr Richard Gerstcll who camealong heard part of the conversationand said For Gods sake man dont doanything like that and at the sametime proceeded to move toward the agedman as If to disarm him

Eckford told him at once to stand backor he would kill him Dr Gerstell withdrew and then Eckford fired and fell to

the pavement Eckford was carried tothe jail bleeding but not unconscious

Eckford was resting well tonight hispulse and temperature being normal andhis condition rational He was smoking apipe and now and then would repeat thathe was a Virginia gentleman Fourphysicians consulted and decided totrephine the skull In the morning at theWestern Maryland Hospital where he willbe removed in order to find the bulletAfter the shooting Eckford positively re-

Superintendent of the Lynchburg ColoredOrphan Asylum is in trouble again andhas been summoned before the PoliceCourt to answer a charge of disorderlyconduct Yesterday he met Bishop Randolph at the Union depot and denouncedthe Bishops course in sustaining thefindings of the ecclesiastical court whichresulted in Jaeger being compelled tosever his relations with the diocese ofSouthern Virginia Dr Jaeger shook hisfinger at the Bishop applying harsh epi-thets A warrant was sworn out for Msarrest The case wilt come up In the Police Court on the 17th instant
