On February 8, 2019, the Fundamental Life Skills (FLS) students at Pacific Trails Middle School participated in the school's Homeroom Olympics. Each student was paired up with a buddy and participated in a variety of events. The events included basketball, football, and a relay race. All of the students participated in each event while being cheered on by peers from Pacific Trails. This was a wonderful event that brought both students with special needs, and typical peers, together. Everyone was all smiles and the encouragement from peers was overwhelming. Each student ended this wonderful event by running through a tunnel of their peers to receive a personalized medal. At Pacific Trails, FLS students participate in a variety of electives, including ASB, which hosted this special Homeroom Olympics. In addition, during homeroom, PTMS has a "Wolf Pals" group of students who connect with their FLS class. Over 20 "Wolf Pals" meet daily with the FLS students playing games, working on academics, engaging in social communication, and helping to support FLS students in other school-wide activities. TRANSITIONING TO HIGH SCHOOL: CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION VS DIPLOMAAs your chi ld is tr ansi tioning to High School we know there are a lot of questions. Big ones for parents of students w ith disabi l i t ies, may be, "Is my chi ld is on a pathway towards a Cer ti f icate of Completion or a Diploma?" or , "What do each of those pathways mean for my chi ld?" Below is a char t to help guide your understanding of the two pathways. This determination is individualized and is based on your chi ld's unique needs; more information r egarding this should be discussed w ith you through your chi ld's Individual Transi tion Plan (ITP) pages of the IEP. As always, you are a cr i tical par t of the IEP team and your input is valued. Please don't hesi tate to communicate w ith your student's IEP team (questions, ideas, concerns) once these ITP discussions begin (sometime before your chi ld's sixteenth bir thday).

What i s your r ole w i th ing Special Educat ion?

I am just f inishing my sixth year as an instr uctional

assistant. I cur rently work at Diegueno Middle school. I began working at Ear l War ren before becoming a Behavior Inter vention Instr uctional Aide. I cur rently work w ith students in the Learning Academy as well as w ith students who requir e academic and behavioral suppor ts w ithin the general education classroom settings.

Tel l us your pr oudest m om ent w i th in your car eer ?

I wouldn?t necessar i ly say there was one par ticular proud moment. I would say however there are many small victor ies. I t makes me happy to see a chi ld f ind the confidence they need in order to succeed in their per sonal and/or academic challenges.

Why did you go i nto Educat ion?

I got into education because of the simple fact that I tr uly love working w ith youth. I t?s so interesting and fun to see the many individual tr ai ts that each student has to offer to other s, themselves and the community. Are there days that are challenging? You bet. But at the end of the day, I wouldn?t want to be anywhere else!

Tel l us one th ing that people don ' t know about you?

I was kissed by Elvis Presley when I was two years old!!
