FREE AT LAST!A Message from SESSC Lynda Greene and Barbara ChamberlainWe are so pleased and proud to announce that we did what we said we were going to do!

On March 1, 2018 – we launched our center as its very own inde-pendent nonprofit senior center! We have officially separated from and we are no longer affiliated with Sound Generations. What a Blessing for our Center!

The separation was in no small part due to the extended hard work by our board members, staff and volunteers, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. It was no easy thing to do and yet there is still much work left to be done. Our current priority is to work on revising our 501c3 status which was dormant while associ-ated with Sound Generations, and to develop a working and active Fundraising Committee.

As we continue to move forward as an independent senior center, we will continue to support some programs and services offered by Sound Generations.

With our independence, donors will be CLEAR where their con-tribution is going – to programs that are vital for seniors right here under our roof. Now volunteers will know that they are part of a cohesive program that sits right here, with our seniors. And now we know that as staff, employed by SESSC, we are one team, with one clear goal. Our independence is already a huge relief, and we are moving forward with new programs and a new vision for our future!

I want to thank the staff and board of directors for their continued hard work and faith as we navigated this transition. And I want to especially thank our community, our members and those who just drop by, for their vote of confidence that we could and should take this important step. You are our reason for being and are no small part in why we are a great center; lively, relevant, friendly and just plain fun. We are grateful and ready to go forward with a new song in our hearts. Thank you for your confidence!

With gratitude,

Lynda Greene Barbara Chamberlain Executive Director SESSC Board President

Through study that focuses on helping older adults with depression, I became certified as a Problem Solving Treatment Psychotherapist. Problem Solving Treatment or PST is an evidence-based therapy proving to help older adults with depression. Through nine weekly sessions, you work with your therapist on breaking down problems into achievable action steps. By the end of the nine weeks, the goal is for the participant to have gained the skills to help with their problems. Solving one’s problems can be directly linked to a decrease in symptoms of depression. Many seniors experience symptoms of depression, and PST can be one way to help make a change in your life. Interested? See social worker for more information.

ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS

WE NEED YOUR HELP

SESSC volunteers invest their time, hard work, and loving care and are committed to forming a strong community and welcoming culture at our Center. They keep us strong. We have new volunteers who keep our Center going:

Who knows, by the time you read this newsletter, there may be another volunteer in the house. So please extend a warm welcome and thank-you to our new volunteers, including the ones not on this list – let’s keep it going strong! And we always need new volunteers.

Who knows, by the time you read this newsletter, there may be another volunteer in the house. So please extend a warm welcome and thank-you to our new volunteers, including the ones not on this list – let’s keep it going strong! And we always need new volunteers.

Please consider becoming a volunteer in the following areas:

Evelyn Bonner - What do we say about that Evelyn? She gives her all, with great heart, every day that she is here. Thank you Evelyn.

Anita Lindsey - Anita comes to us through AARP and brings her steady hands and calm manner. We really benefit!

Derek Fedesco - Derek is a friendly neighbor, lending his help to bingo on Wednesdays. We are so happy that he is joining us!

Lillian, Sam and Melanie Sako help with just about anything you need a hand with, especially crafts and the thrift store. What a nice family!

Joan Wellman - Joan volunteers through a YWCA pro-gram in both the kitchen and lunch program. She comes with a wealth of experience and we have enjoyed getting to know her.

Community Dining Lunch Program: Because participation in our lunch program has grown dramatically, Sharon Smith, our Master Chef, needs help in the kitchen with a variety of tasks, like food preparation and washing dishes. One of the perks of being a volunteer in the Community Dining Lunch program is that you don’t have to pay for lunch.

Volunteers for Wednesday Bingo: We need volunteers for Bingo!

Front Desk Receptionist: Our list of receptionists has grown critically short and your help is greatly appreciated. Receptionists have the special and distinct honor of being the first face new people see when they visit our Center for the first time. Use your warm smile to greet people, both familiar and new.

Special Events: One of the ways the SESSC is able to provide the activities you enjoy is by raising money through our various special events such as the Lifetime Member Dinner, Auctions, and Rainbow Bingo. Be a part of the group that truly makes it happen at the Southeast Seattle Senior Center.

Cheap Chickadee Thrift Shop: We need volunteers! Be a part of the team that plays a major role in providing revenue for the Center.

There are other volunteer opportunities. Stop by Kate’s office or call her at (206) 722-0317 to find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you. New idea to try: volunteer with a friend to make it even more fun!
