Church Health Church Health Checkup

The idea of going to my family doctor for a checkup is not something I look forward to doing but I know it is very important for me to do so. Coming to the realization that I need to shed a few pounds, eat healthier, and exercise more are challenging but it really is what is best for me. The same is true for church health. Examining our spiritual health as an individual and as a church is a challenging task. It is much easier to attend church where we sing our favorite songs, hear our favorite pastor, and spend time with our best friends. To mature in our faith we do need to participate in worship, be encouraged by our pastor and friends; but there is more to the Christian faith and spiritual health. When we probe a little deeper into the spiritual examination process relating to prayer, evangelism, and discipleship that often becomes uncomfortable for us even though it is best for our spiritual maturity. As your Church Health Team Leader, I want to challenge myself, the staff of our churches as well as church members to grow in the area of prayer, evangelism and discipleship. I want to challenge every church in our association to provide witness training for your members in the next 12 months. The North American Mission Board has free resources you can download. If you want someone to come to your church and lead a witness training class please contact me at [email protected] or at 217-483-2471. Jerry WeberChurch Health Team Leader

Three men from Capital City Baptist Association, Rex Alexander, Mike Robertson and David Howard, one from Westfield Association, Kurt Crail, one from Goshen Trail Association, George Meese and one from Williamson Association Don Kragness, traveled to Gibitngil Island, Philippines. We were joined by Ian Smith, a strong 20 year old missionary kid, when we arrived at Cebu City. The mission was to rebuild the school, which is centered on the very highest point of the island and is the hub of the Island’s people. Among the tasks that we performed were pouring concrete to form a bond beam on top of the block walls, building trusses, laying blocks for water reservoirs, setting up water tanks and plumbing them, interacting with children and teachers, planting the gospel seed and even leading many of the classes in music. A typical day started at 5 AM with mass confusion as we all tried to feed ourselves breakfast in a kitchen that was actually a small

hallway. Around 6 AM we waited outside for our transportation. At the beach we would wait for the boat to take us to the Island. Many days we would load building materials onto the boat. The materials included rock, cement, coconut lumber, hardware and water. Even though the island has a population of 5000 people everything is carried on your shoulder to the boat and wherever it goes on the Island. The island has no electricity, no source of freshwater. The boat ride was 20-25 minutes depending upon the weather to the Island. When we arrived at the Island we had another 20 minute walk. A little after seven the children at the school would meet outside to say pledges, sing, quote The Lord’s Prayer, pray, exercise and greet our team. After that they cared for the school grounds by cutting the grass with scissors and picking up anything that didn’t belong, cleaning the comfort rooms, bathrooms, and the classrooms.

The joy of the day was not the construction work but interacting with all the students. Telling stories from the Bible, playing and singing. Many seeds were planted and we had the opportunity to be there for a harvest, Kenny. The Philippines are predominantly Roman Catholic. And for one to be baptized after he has a relationship with the Lord means that his family will disown him. This adds a level of commitment that we in United States do not understand. Six men traveled 18,000 miles to plant seeds of the gospel and repair a school. The scrapes, bruises and blisters that were very sensitive, even painful, are no longer sensitive or painful. However, my prayer is that the men will not allow their sensitive hearts and painful burdens for the lost to be desensitized with the salve of worldliness.
