Tail Of The Monthby Jamie Hunter

Good Grief:Finding Peace Aft er Pet Lossby: Sid Korpi

The thoughts of some when it comes to losing a pet are not always quite sympathetic, especially from those who just cant comprehend the love, devotion and con-nection that so many of us have been lucky enough to experience. You can’t really blame those who can’t relate, but you can and should acknowledge your own legitimate grief.

Losing any family member is tragic especially if you don’t have many family or friends close by, and there are no rules when it comes to grieving. If you feel it, it’s real. Sid Korpi guides us by not only exploring several diff erent ways of grieving but also by giving assurance that any way is your right way.

This book is not a clinical self help book, it is a gentle and sympathetic guide. It gives information for vari-ous stages from preparing for your pet’s euthanasia & helping you decide when is the right time, to mov-ing on & opening your heart once again to the love of another pet. Several ideas on how to celebrate and memorialize your pet are presented and death is ex-plained as a natural transition, not an end. Korpi also touches on diff erent viewpoints from the spiritual, reli-gious and philsiophical ends on pet loss, and discusses the eternal connection always shared.

Losing family is always diffi cult but when those around you can’t grasp the magnitude it’s especially important to seek out resources and people who understand to manage your grief. Sid Korpi gives us a fantastic guide of information and the gift of some inner peace.

I’m a 5yr old Lab/Great Pyrenees X named Chewy. I am not sure why, but it could be the hunk of wood that I’m always carrying around... or maybe it’s be-

cause I allow my lady friend Callie to always chew on my ear! I am great on leash and would love a canine companion.

Nice to meet you! My name is Cole and I am a 5yr old Shep/Lab X. I am a big boy, but I am also the most calm, gentle and well-behaved dog ever. I am currently still a little timid and would do best in a home with lots of love and encouragement.

Why hello there. My name is Boots and I am a 4mths old. My mom is a Shepherd X, but I seem to have some Lab in me as well. I am a very obedient

boy and would do best in a home with older children as the little ones still scare me a bit.

Callie is what they call me. I am a 1-1.5yr old Shep/Collie X. I am a very social and love playing with other dogs & humans alike. I would do best in a home

where my new owners can set firm boundar-ies and teach me how to become the best dog I can be!

Hi, my name is Cinder and I am a 2yr old Poodle X. I’m quite shy around other dogs and need some time to adjust and feel comfortable. I love children but sometimes

I can play a little rough so a home with older children would be best for me.

My name is Cocoa and I am a 3yr old Dachshund X that is learning lots of new things. When it comes to other dogs, I love to play but I am a little bossy and

protective of my toys. I think that a home with older children would be best for me.

I am a 4mth old Shepherd X named Gus Gus. If I were in grade school, I would surely be voted “class clown” as I am always making my foster fam-ily laugh. If you’re looking for a very social, affectionate and attentive pup – I’m your guy!

They call me Tink! I am a beautiful 4mth old Shepherd X who was born in foster care with my littermates (Gus-Gus & Boots). I am a very affec-tionate and

sweet girl. I am also already house & crate trained... so all I really need now is a loving forever home!

Lucky here! I am a 3yr old Husky/Pyrense/Retriever X. My previous owners were very busy so they surren-dered me. I love to run & play fetch but

I can’t promise I will always bring the ball back! I am very smart, know my basic commands and I absolutely love children.

My name is Andy and I am about 7yrs old. I would love a warm lap to sleep on, while be-ing scratched behind the ears of course. I like to be left alone some-

times but I am a big movie buff so if you are looking for someone to watch movies with why not make it a permanent date?

I am a queen, but you may call me Eva. I am a 6-8yr old girl who loves to be the center of at-tention. I am very excited about the idea of having my very own

home and loving family. I hope you discover me soon cause I’m already packed and wait-ing for you!

Charisma is my name, it means gift of grace. I am a sweet 2yr old Lab X and they tell me I am very smart. I am quite energetic and I really love playing with

toys. I sure hope my new family comes to adopt me soon. I am going to be a wonder-ful companion.

“A todos les llega su mo-mento de Glo-ria” is Spanish for “Every dog has his day”. Well what about us cats? My name is Paco and I am 9mths old. I love to play

and I get along well with everyone. So if you are looking for a cuddler (without any dog drool!) I’m waiting.

Life on the farm is kinda laid back. .. Ain’t much an old country boy like me can’t hack... It’s early to bed, and early in the sack... Thank God I’m a country

boy! That’s me, Magnaus, a country boy. I am a 3-5yr old Shepherd X and I love fresh air and wide open spaces.

Turbo is the name and playing Frisbee is my game. I am a loveable and active 1yr old Lab/Akita X. I am very affectionate and people think I’m just like a big

teddy bear. I would do well with an active family.

Yo! Mikey here. I was a stray but now I am the second longest resi-dent here. I sure am ready for my forever home! I am about 5yrs old and I love to get cuddles

& be scratched. I’m a really great boy so please call or come by to check me out.

Rescue runs on the eff orts of the people that are involved. This is

no diff erent at Rescue For Life. There are the obvious individuals in-volved, the ones who go out and feed and fi nd and bring in the dogs and cats to the Rescue.

Of course there are the Foster Homes too, without them, there would be no way of taking these animals in at all. The Foster Homes are oft en the heart

make therescue world

go round

of the rescue, providing shelter, and love and care, training and socializing the animals that may never have expe-rienced anything like that before.

There are other people though, that many don’t think about, and that cer-tainly aren’t seen but without them, everything would be so much more diffi cult to manage. The ones that do any number of errands, phone calls, manage emails, help out at fundraising events, adoption days, taking animals to and from vet appointments, the life-blood in a way of a Rescue Group.

At Rescue For Life we are very lucky indeed to have people like this and in particular, one very dedicated woman. A Jane of all trades!

Jane Murphy is our very enthusiastic and willing secret weapon, or as we call her our “miracle”. Need a place to store things? Jane will do that. Need some donated items picked up? Jane will do that. Need someone to sit and cuddle a young dog just coming out of

the anaesthetic at our Spay and Neu-ter clinic? Jane is there! (Okay, that is a tough job but someone has to do it ha ha!)

Jane is a tower of strength for us and as we have heard her say any number of times, “I may not be able to take any foster dogs, but I sure can get in there and do something to help out!”.

Yes, Jane you certainly do.

We know why you do it, or rather WHO you do it for. You have helped us to save so many of those precious, furry lives. Maybe you don’t realize just how much the humans who work with you, appreciate what you do, but we really, really do. We know the diff erence that you make in this world, because we see it and feel it, every day!

Thank you so much Jane Murphy (and of course Jane’s, two pugs Big Enough and Mindy, who rule her roost!) from all of us at Rescue For Life.

Beagle Paws Rescue

So... what do you get when you cross a French Bulldog with a Beagle? Why a designer “Freagle” of course!!! HaHa! My name is Oakley and I love to play fetch and be the centre of attention. I’m such a handsome dude, why shouldn’t I get all the attention? If you’d like a fun loving buddy to hang out with please call Beagle Paws.

My name is Bella and I am a stunning beauty who loves to run and cuddle up close. I also love to play chase and will bark to make other dogs (and cats too!) play chase with me... although the cats don’t seem to like the game very much. I would love a home with another dog, lots of treats, a big bed, and a jogging companion.

My name is Casanova, but you can call me Nova for short. I’m a loving young gelding that recently joined the herd. I love people, and more than anything I just want company. I’ve overcome many obstacles including a major injury to my eye which was removed – but that doesn’t slow me down at all! Please bring me home and give me all of the love and attention that I truly deserve.

Rescue 100

My name is Molly and I’m a very sweet natured mare. I’m in foal and due very soon. The vol-unteers are finding out

that I know a lot more than I’m letting on. I halter and lead well, and even stand nicely to get my feet picked up. Things are pretty good here, but I’m anxiously waiting for my forever family to find me and bring me home. Hi, my name is Mickey and I’m

cute as a button! I’m such a curious little guy; I always need to know what’s going on around me. I lead well and just love to follow the volunteers around. I’m learning a lot here and they tell me I’m going to be a gorgeous Quarter Horse when I grow up. I’m having lots of fun, but I can’t wait to find my new family!

My name is Amber and I’m a 2yr old Collie X who LOVES people and will roll over for belly rubs any chance I get. I’m good with other dogs but not too sure about cats yet. I’m great on & off leash and would love to go to an active and loving home.

I am Becky and I’ve been with SCARS for over a year now... but not because there is anything wrong with me, I am a wonderful girl! I am a very friendly 80lb Rotti X who gets along well with other dogs, loves attention and can’t wait to meet you!

www.scarscare.org ~ (780) 466-SCAR

My name is Clarkie and I look like a purebred German Shep-herd, but I don’t have any tattoos so I’m likely a cross. I am a large 5yr old independent boy and I would love to live on an acreage with a loving family and another canine friend.

I’m Buddy. I’m a super happy guy who loves people of all sizes. I am house & crate trained, have great recall, listen well and love going for walks. I am full of energy but also have wonderful manners. I’m ok with most dogs but don’t really care for cats.

My name is Gidget and I am a Rotti X. I had to have surgery on my eye but I’m all healed up now. I am very friendly and get so excited when it’s time for a walk. I am crate trained and walk right in for bed... where my foster mom always has a treat waiting.

They call me Derby and I’ve been with SCARS well over a year now... but no one can understand why!!! I am a Shep-herd X who loves everyone. I have a few allergies but they are under control. I am good with other dogs and love to cuddle.

I am a young 10mth old boy named Griffin. I am a very sweet and working hard on my house manners. I’m so happy to be out of the pound, I was there for a long time and it’s a hard place to be. Hopefully I will get a place to call home real soon.

Everyone calls me Lonnie and say that I am likely a pretty Chow X. I am very friendly with people and ok with other dogs but tend to prefer males. I am not fond of cats, but I am housetrained and well behaved on & off leash. Come check me out!

Mercy here! I am great with people but I am a bit particular with other dogs. I’m high en-ergy, smart, a little stubborn, and I love to talk. I think an active home with older kids would work best as I may have too much energy for small children.

This was the vision for the implementation of Kitt yhawk Animal Foundation. Kitt yhawk was started in remem-brance of a long-time equine companion; Kitt yhawk.

Registered as an Alberta charity on September 29th, 2005. The object of Kitt yhawk is to educate the members of the public relative to animal health, provide assistance programs for animals and supply charitable benefi ts to animals as a whole.

Its focus is to assist Edmonton and area animal rescue groups in fi nding permanent homes for the thousands of unwanted or neglecte animals that would otherwise be euthanized.

Kitt yhawk Animal Foundation received federal charitablestatus in May, 2007 and through an endowment fund,

created by the founders annually distributes funds to local area rescue groups for their ongoing eff orts to save the lives of animals.

Kitt yhawk Animal foundation invites applications on an annual basis from animal rescue groups in the greater Edmonton area who meet the necessary qualifi cations.Funding is available on May 31st of each year.

When their Momma’s gone...

The majority of waterfowl (Mallards, Goldeneyes, Teals) are raised by the female bird and the male is not part of the family unit. Typically, mallards, teal and other “Dabbling Ducks” will nest away from water and when the eggs hatch they will lead their ducklings to water.

Goldeneye and some other “Diving Ducks” nest in tree cavities. When the ducklings hatch they must climb out of the nest hole and jump to the ground. Since the ducklings are quite small, it is an incredible journey to leave the nest site and fi nd the safety of a lake. If something startles the female, such as a predator, she has several techniques for protecting or diverting att ention away from her vulnerable young.

One technique is the “broken wing” trick. She will very eff ectively, and noisily, att ract att ention to herself by limp-ing and dragging a wing and walking away from where her ducklings are. When the predator att empts to catch an easy meal she will fl y off . In the meantime, the ducklings instinc-

tively know they must hide. The group will oft en scatt er in tall grass or any hiding place. The family will regroup when the female feels safe enough to return to the area and will start gently calling the ducklings to her.

Another trick she has is to simply fl y off , leaving the duck-lings to scatt er and hide. She is not abandoning them, she simply does what her instincts tell her to do depending on the situation. Unfortunately, ducklings fall prey to many predators, even our own dogs and cats. It is a perilous jour-ney from hatching and becoming an adult duck - fewer than 20% make it to adulthood. Ducklings become separated from their mothers for many reasons, if you fi nd orphaned ducklings please call the wildlife hotline.

If you bring the ducklings to our shelter, please ensure that the ducklings are kept warm and stress free. They should not be given water as ducklings without their mother maynot have adequate water proofi ng of their down and if they get too wet they can become chilled and/or hypothermic

The fi rst litt ers of hares are born from late April to early May. It is custom-ary for the young to be left unatt end-ed while the mother forages for food. Typically she will only return twice a day to feed them as her scent att racts predators. If you come across a baby hare, do not assume it is an orphan and please do not move it unless:

• It is obviously injured.• It is in an inappropriate place, such as a parking lot.• You have seen the mother or other siblings dead.

If injured, please contact our wildlife hotline. Please also contact us before att empting to move any baby hares. If you are advised to bring it to our shel-ter, please try to minimize stress by:

• Keep the baby hare(s) in a card board box that has a lid and ventila tion holes.• Keeping the car radio off and talk ing to a whisper/minimum.• Minimize handling, if possible only handle to put inside transpor tation box.• Keep away from family pets.• Please do not att empt to feed the hare(s).

Nestlings (naked or partially feath-ered chicks): If a nestling is found on the ground, the fi rst thing to do is look for a nest it may have fallen out of. In the event that no nest is found that has the same species and similar sized young, the most important thing to do is to keep the bird(s) warm. At this stage it is unable to thermo regulate and if its body temperature decreases too much it will become too weak to eat or digest food.

If a nest and young are found on the ground, having fallen out of a tree, keep the babies warm and either re-pair the nest or replace it using a margarine tub. Using a margarine tub poke holes in the bott om to allow for water drainage, place it securely back into the tree, return the babies, and then monitor for the return of the parent(s). If the parents do not return aft er a couple of hours, please contact our wildlife hotline.

If a tree is cut down and a cavity nest is discovered with young still inside, you can att empt to reconstruct the nest site as best as possible - preferably us-ing the same nest cavity. You can then monitor for the return of the parents from a distance. Once adult birds are feeding young they are very loyal to a nest site and will generally tolerate even this level of disturbance.

* Please note: Many people believe that leaving your scent on the baby will cause the parents to reject it, this is not true. Birds have a very poor sense of smell and this is not a concern.

Fledglings (wing and tail feathers de-veloped, out of the nest and hopping about): Many bird species spend sev-eral days practicing before they are able to fl y. It is at this time in their lives when most well-intentioned humans bring them to us.

If the bird is obviously injured (i.e. bleeding, dragging a leg/wing), we do ask that you contact our wildlife ho-tline. If there are no obvious injuries, observe the bird from a distance and watch if other bird(s) att end or call to it. If it is in imminent danger (i.e. be-ing stalked by a cat) it is all right to pick up the bird and place it in a tree out of reach. Watch closely as it only takes a few seconds for an adult to feed the young bird and this can eas-ily be missed. Please do not feed the young one as it is their hunger calls that tell the adult where they are.

Fawns that are found alone should not be captured unless obviously in-jured as it is normal for the mother to leave her young for extended periods of time while she browses for food. Newborn fawns have no scent, so that along with camoufl age protects them from predators in the fi rst critical days of life. They spend much of their fi rst two weeks lying quietly, waiting for the doe to return to nurse.

Mum does leave her fawn alone for the majority of the day as this behav-ior ensures she does not drawn att en-tion to the fawn. The doe is generally within hearing distance of the fawn.

Unlike young hares and fawns, young squirrels are not left alone for long pe-riods of time. If no parent returns to collect a young squirrel within a cou-ple of hours, please call our wildlife hotline as it may need to be rescued. If the nest site has been destroyed, due to storms etc., the mother will move them. Red squirrels have multiple nest sites and regularly move their young from nest to nest.

If you have found a squirrel nest in an inconvenient place (i.e. att ic), we ask people if possible to wait for the young to leave the nest (at 6-9 weeks of age), at which time any entry points can be blocked off aft er checking that none are still inside. If you have found one or more young squirrels that are orphaned please do not att empt to feed them, call our wildlife hotline.

Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue

They call me Amy and I really enjoy running around, playing and getting into perfect puppy mischief. I know I bug my sister but that’s part of my fun! I get along with everyone and really love adventure. My foster family says I am very bright.

My name is Percy and I’m very sweet but I’ve had a rough go of things. I suffered some abuse and I have shut down a bit, but with some care and love I expect to make a full recovery. If you are looking for a handsome Black Lab please consider me.

There once was a lady who lived in a shoe and had so many children she didn’t know what to do. My name is Bree and that’s me alright... I had 11 puppies! Whew, that was hard work but it will all be worth it when we find good homes.

My name is Paige and I am a sweet 1-2yr old Shepherd X. Harper is my Mom. I’m told that I am easily corrected and eager to please. I am amazing around kids, and I just ignore the resident cats. Everyone says I’m a “Gem” but really I’m just a fantastic dog!

Kerry here! I am a beautiful 3yr old Border Collie X who loves to run and play. I get along well with dogs and I’m generally just a really good girl. Do you have room in your home for a sweet-heart like me? I can’t wait to share my life with a loving family.

My name is Autumn and I am a quiet 1.5yr old girl. I was surrendered when my mom moved, and became so stressed and upset that I got a bladder infection. Even though my foster mom gives me my meds, I still love her to pieces! Every morning I come to cuddle and every night I always tuck her in.

I was rescued because I had sore ears (hematoma) which are now being treated. I am a 9mth old Husky X named Jackson, and even with my sore ears I have already learned to sit and lie down. My foster mom says I am as smart as I am handsome.

Hi I’m Lola. I am about 2yrs old. With my long legs they think I may be a Doberman/Shepherd X. I love to play with other dogs and cats are no problem. I am high energy and would do best with older children (12yrs+) in my new home.

My name is Rhett. I was seized from my home because I had a severe eye & face infection and my family did not seek medical care. I have lost vision in my infected eye but my face is slowly healing, and despite everything, I am still a happy boy!

I am Paige’s mom, Harper... and as you see she got her good looks from me! I am about 4yrs old and as a mother I learned to be very patient, gentle and calm. I am a pleasure to be around and everybody, whether 2 or 4 legged, seems to like me.

“Rescue animals aren’t broken, they’ve simply experienced more

Hello out there! My name is Sushi. I am a well natured girl that was aban-doned by my owners when they moved. I am a quiet & loving sweet-heart who is in

need of a good home. I can’t wait to have my very own family.

I’m Cassy. I was left with my littermates in a box on a rural drive-way. I was adopted out before but was sadly returned because the family dog was stressing

me out. I am hoping to find a nice peaceful home where I can be comfortable and happy.

I’m Toffee and I am quite camera shy. I was in foster care but I am now ready to go to a new home. I used to live with many other cats and I do tolerate being around them but I think I would prefer to be the only cat in the house.

I’m Chester. I was a stray and the people that found me wanted to keep me because I am very affection-ate. Unfortu-nately their cat does not get along well with

others. I’m a very special boy and I really love to get attention.

Joe here. I was a starving stray that was dropped off at a vet clinic with hypother-mia. I may not get along with dogs & other cats but I sure love being around

people. I am looking for a family where I can be kept indoors and be the only pet.

Hello, I’m Gracie and I have been living in long term foster care. I came as a feral cat but over time I have become very affec-tionate with people. I have

come a long way but I would still be better off if I went to a one pet home.

Our names are Oh Henry & Sandy. Sadly, our owner needed to go into an assisted living home and could no lon-ger keep us. We are very loving cats

who both love to be brushed and held. We would love to be adopted to-gether but if it means we can find the right permanent homes we can be separated.

Our names are Jose and Kittikens and we were surrendered due to allergies. Jose has been declawed and we must be adopted together. We are a little

timid and still adjusting to these large life changes but we’ll come around.

My name is Shasta and I have called the Bow Valley SPCA home for over 2 years. At first I was very afraid of other dogs and it took me a while to learn to be comfortable with different people and situ-ations. My DNA was tested and turns out I am a Boxer/Great Dane X. I have become a wonderful walking, hiking, swimming and all around hang out best friend - and I’m even the star of many videos (Check our website under News & Views). I love going in cars, chasing & playing with sticks, running, jumping and playing fetch. I also have the biggest, most soulful eyes you could ever imagine. As won-derful as I am, I am not a dog for every home. I need an experienced handler who will continue to help me gain confidence around other dogs. I would also like to go to a home where I would be the only pet. They will miss me greatly when I finally find a home, but it is surely my time and I deserve the best.

Hello, I’m Khloe and I too am one of Gracie’s puppies. I am a Lab X around 14mths old and I love to give hugs. I’m a very loving and relaxed girl who is looking for a caring family who will love me forever and ever.

Ebenezer here! I’m 3yrs old and I may seem like a big tough guy but I’m really a big softie. I am quite shy but with some patience I’m sure to be your best friend.

My name is Cuddles. I was rescued with my four kittens. I am a calm, sweet and very friendly 2yr old who will make a fantastic companion for any family.

Hello! I’m Dexter and Gracie is my mom. I’m a smart, good natured, handsome boy to boot! I will be a faithful companion for some lucky family... all I ask for in return is love, attention & walks.

My name is Gracie and I’ve been a busy Mom of ten. I’m a lovely and affectionate dog who is obedient and adores the home life. I’m looking forward to relaxing with a loving family in my new forever home.

cats or dogs. I can’t wait to meet you!

I’m Shilo. I am a big beautiful Himalayan X who is full of life! I love to be brushed and everyone falls for my stunning blue eyes. I just crave attention

so I hope my forever home has a lot to give.

I’m a 6mth old Shep X named Trooper who was found with a rifle wound. I’ve had vet care and should be just fine very soon. Despite my bad luck, I’m a calm quiet boy

who really loves to be made a fuss of!

My name is Zoey and I’m one of Gracie’s pups. I’m a Lab X and one bashful little puppy! How-ever, once I get to know you, you will see my very playful and curi-ous side. I will be a wonderful addition to anyone’s family.

for me! Do you have room for a handsome fellow like me in your heart and home?

I am a beauti-ful 8mth old Border Collie X named Ebony. I am also very sweet and love children. I am generally a very good dog but I do have one bad habit, I like to chase

cars. I will need a home with a securely fenced yard so I don’t hurt myself.

I am big and hairy and suf-fer from what the rescue community calls Black Dog Syndrome (I’m all black). My name is Hank and I am a large Lab X who can’t wait

to find a family to give all my love and atten-tion to. Could it be yours?

My name is Scobie and I am an extremely handsome 2yr old German Short-Haired Pointer. I love kids and I am already house trained. With my short hair I

will need an inside bed and don’t forget I will need lots of exercise!

They call me Scooby Doo. I had a rough start but everything seems to be a lot easier these days and I’m told I will even have my own family one day!!! I am a

7yr young Lab X who loves to just hang out and go for gentle walks.

My name is Tanker and I hate having my picture taken because cameras scare me! I am a gorgeous 5yr old Rotti X who needs a family who will love me forever. I

am very shy when I first meet you but I’m a sweet boy and I warm up quickly.

My name is Winston and I am about 4mths old. I am a Lab crossed with something BIG and I love to play. My brother was adopted but I too have Black

Dog Syndrome (I am all black) so I am still here. I wonder why we aren’t just as adopt-able as all the other colors?

Seriously, how can you resist me? My name is Duke and I am a 1.5yr old Husky/St. Bernard X. I am good with other dogs but prefer a home with children 12+ only.

An acreage home with lots of space to play would be ideal... especially since I can jump 6’ high fences!

Hi, I have a very pretty name it is Falhen and I am a very gentle Husky X. I have four puppies who will be ready for adoption in early May. I will be ready

then too. I hope you will like my picture and give me a chance to live in my very own home too.

I was laying in bed thinking about the next day, and slot-ting all the pegs into their appropriate holes so I could get everything accomplished I needed to do. I certainly wasn’t ready for what happened.

Morning came quickly and I found myself on the way to our adoption centre to clean and say my “Hello’s” to my four-leggers awaiting adoption. It was the usual frenzy of activity, cleaning, laundry, and occasionally tripping over the odd cat who loved to circle my feet like a shark around it’s prey.

Then came the phone call. The Animal Care & Control Centre calling to inform me that one of our adopted kit-tens, Jessy, was in their care. I can’t totally recollect the whole conversation as a million thoughts and questions were swirling in my head, but none brought any resolution to how Jessy, found miles away from his home, ended up in their facility. Aft er I hung up the phone, I realized that perhaps this wasn’t just about Jessy, but about Lilly, his sis-ter, too. Was she home safe and sound, or was she still “out there somewhere”?

I was consumed the rest of the day trying to sort out how Jessy, an eight month old kitt en, had wandered from south Edmonton all the way northeast to city limits in three days. It didn’t matt er how I looked at it nothing made sense. My phone calls to the adopted pet parents went unanswered, and as the day progressed the level of my frustration and concern continued to build. The next day, I drove over to the home hoping to see Lilly and receive the news that it had all been a terrible accident. That wasn’t the case. I stood in disbelief as I learned that days prior Jessy and Lilly had been driven out close to where Jessy was found and “dumped” by another member of the family. I, as a rescuer, felt defl ated, responsible, angst, aft er all I had screened these people, done the home check and approved the adoption. Now I was questioning my ability while being whipped by the thoughts of what my ineptitude had opened these poorkitt ens up to.

Saving Animals From Euthanasia Team (SAFE Team)

Hi, my name is Meg and this is my sister Amy. We are the friendliest, most social and outgoing pair you will ever meet and we want to find a home together. I

love to ride around on your shoul-ders, and we both love getting affection and playing.

They call me JJ, and I am truly the life of the party! SAFE team says if I were a human I would be a total clown. Do you want a buddy that will keep you enter-tained for hours and snuggle up with you at night? Then look no further, and apply to adopt me today!

Hello my name is Cleopatra. I am a very friendly and curious girl who loves to explore new situations, and I am always up for a long cuddle!!! I love other cats and would adjust well to any household. I hope I am the sweetheart that will make your family complete.

www.safeteam.ca ~ (780) 819-2679

My name is Licorice and I am looking for a life-long best friend. I am a fun and social guy who loves other cats & people. I am always up for playtime or snuggles… I’m pretty well up for anything you want to do! So what are you waiting for? Pick me I will love you to bits!!!

I am a super sweet girl named Jenny who loves to snuggle and purr. I am playful and adore my toys with feathers. I have been with SAFE Team since I was a tiny baby and nobody can under-stand why because I’m such a wonderful girl. I also get along great with other kitties.

Jessy and Lilly were sweet kitt ens from day one. They were born to an abandoned cat who came into our care from a rural pound. We nurtured them as babies and brought their mother back to health with view of them all going on to their forever homes to a life of love and security – a fairytale ending every rescuer and rescue organization dreams of.

The rest of day two was spent printing, posters and recruit-ing volunteers to poster the small residential area, sur-rounded by miles of open country, where Jessy was found. Jessy was safe, however we knew Lilly still needed our help. The next day went off without a hitch, we left post-ers, searched, and talked to people when we could. Now it was an emotionally cruel waiting game. Three days could have been three months in my upside-down world, where it seemed hope was the only thing fueling my existence. Then it came, the phone call that changed everything - Lilly had been found. The fl oodgates holding back my pent up emo-tions opened and I cried tears of joy and relief as I heard the news. Nothing else matt ered at that moment other than Lilly was safe.

Both Jessy and Lilly are back with us and are looking to start their life again in a home that will respect, value and cherish them.

I have learned from this ordeal that we can only do our very best when judging homes and that we’re allowed not to be right 100% of the time. I would like to mention to all po-tential adopters to please understand the adoption process from a rescue point of view. We may ask questions you don’t feel are appropriate, we may make decisions that you don’t agree with, but at the end of the day, it’s about the ani-mals we have rescued, nurtured and love and being able to go to bed at night and sleep without any regrets. prm

I am a beauti-ful girl named Zoe. I am about 1yr old. I was rescued from the streets and have come to love the finer things in life. I am a little shy at first but when I get

to know you, you’ll find there’s not a better a companion around.

My name is Tsu’tey (Sue-tay) my character in Avatar was the Omaticaya’s finest warrior. However, I’m a lover not

a fighter. I’m waiting for my home with my brother Sully. We are about 8mths old and love to run and play and when we’re all tuck-ered out we’ll be your best lap friends. We would love to find a home together, but we can be separated if you think the two wonder-ful, playful, handsome, kittens would be too much to handle.

I’d like a home please! My name is Nellie and I’ve come such a long way from the wild kitten that was found in an industrial yard. I have worked very hard at being

social so that I might someday have my very own pet parents. I’m now ready to graduate!

My sister, Little Grey Bug, and I have been waiting a long time for the perfect home. We are about 1yr old. I am strikingly hand-some with my

Bengal spots and my sister’s grey tabby markings are beautiful. We were born in a yard and came into care as feral kittens when we were 10wks old. We now need our own indoor home where we can spend the rest of our lives treating you to our playful antics.

Charlie here, I’m the purrfect gentleman. I’m about 2 – 3yrs old and ready to settle down. I’ve been fostered with other cats so I know how to share. Although I

love my foster mom, I do miss having my very own pet parents, I don’t even know why I was abandoned.

I’m Bobby cuddling in the toys and this is my camera shy brother Amos. We are very special, we were wild and

it was thought we might have to live our lives on the streets, but after we were neutered we decided it wasn’t the life we wanted and stayed in our kennel in the industrial yard, so our caregiver brought us home.

My name is Cassie. I’m looking for my “rock”, someone that can show me love is the best medicine. I am afraid of change but once I settle in, I’m the loveli-

est of kitties and pretty cute too. All I want is to be home where I feel safe and where I can get lots of belly rubs.

Hi there, my name is Sammy. I’m a kitty that likes to be on the move, my name should be Speedy. I am very inde-pendant and like my own way most of

know. I love to be with children, especially when they read to me! I also really like long walks, playing with toys and cuddling up.

My name is Poki and I am a very sweet & energetic 3mth old girl that ar-rived from the NWT SPCA. I hurt my leg and I have a small cast on, but it will come off soon.

I am a bright girl and I’m working hard on my crate and house training. I love going for car rides and long walks... how about a drive?

My name is Lady and I was first spotted as a stray in 2010 when I was about 8mths old and my first litter of puppies had just passed. Shortly after, another litter

was lost but sadly my owners still wouldn’t allow me to be spayed. Recently, volunteers spotted me pregnant again but this time I also had mange and was becoming very sick so I was finally surrendered. The very next day I gave birth to 10 new puppies at the Castledowns Vet Clinic where I stayed for a full week. My pups will be ready for adoption around May 15th! If you would like to help with a donation for our care you can contact the vet clinic directly at 780-456-3616.

Thousands of years ago,

we humans formed a

covenant with our companion animals. We

wanted them to live with us and to share our

their natural skills to fend for themselves. It

then became our responsibility to feed and

care for them. While the animals have kept

their end of the bargain, we humans largely

have not. ~ Unknown

Social NetworkingBrings Canadian Trap-Neuter-ReturnGroups Together

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) has been prac-ticed for years in many cities in the United

States. It is the alternative feral cat management program to trap & kill or trap and remove.

Community feral street cats are trapped, altered and returned to their home environment with the assistance of a caregiver. By reducing the number of off spring born to feral cats there is an eventual decline in their numbers.

In Canada TNR is fast becoming a movement and organizations can be found across the country. Thanks to social media and an incred-ibly devoted group of administrators “Canada’s TNR Network – 4 organizations & colony care-takers” was born as a Facebook group. It is a place where ideas are shared, questions are asked, and opportunities and challenges can be discussed with people from all walks of life that are committ ed to seeing feral cat euthanasia numbers reduced in our shelters and pounds.

Litt le Cats Lost (Trap-Neuter-Return) Society based in Edmonton will be conducting four

Page 27: April May 12

27pet rescue magazine April/May 2012local stories...local people...local pets

pilot sites in 2012 to substantiate their claim that TNR does equal a reduction in the number of feral community cats. They have been TNR’ing industrial sites since 2009 and in some colonies have seen up to a 40% reduction and more in others. They advocate for spay/neuter, licensing, identifi ca-tion and that cat owners keep their cats contained to their property.

There are many dynamics at play when it comes to feral cats, so they ask that people keep an open mind to this somewhat relatively alternative concept to euthanization.

If you know anyone in another city that is looking for help with feral community cats, here is a list of TNR organiza-tions currently operating in Canada.

‘Tis The Season To Be Sneezin’

Allergies In Dogs - What Can I Do About Dog Allergies Symptoms?

Page 29: April May 12

prm

It is suggested that if you are looking for permanent relief for dog allergies symptoms you need to go see a veterinary dermatologist. Here you can fi nd the cause

for sneezing in dogs, general allergies in dogs and most of your dog skin problems.

People medicines such as Benadryl and Claritin will only provide temporary relief of the signs and your dog will still be uncomfortable.

In some cases the dermatologist may be able to make up al-lergy shots if they fi nd out the cause of your dogs allergies. You should not make any diet changes or treat your pet with any medication without strict guidance from a veterinarian.

Changing the dog’s diet without the guidance from a vet-erinarian can make it more diffi cult for them to isolate the cause of the allergies. It’s entirely possible that the causes may involve specifi c foods. This requires an extensive food trial. However it could be environmental agents that are causing your dog allergies symptoms which would require further allergy testing.

On your own you could try hydroxizine or atarax for some relief. Do Not use prednisone, it is not the greatest it’s a ste-roid and have several side eff ects. You can also try eliminat-ing the normal protein source with another protein like fi sh or venison. It takes up to 2 to 3 months of a diet change to tell if there is any eff ect.

Allergic contact dermatitis usually shows up in dogs as a hy-persensitivity reaction to particular molecules in your pet’s environment. Irritant contact dermatitis happens when the skin is exposed to noxious substances in the environment. The symptoms and biologic mechanisms in these two dis-ease structures are closely similar and are oft en discussed together.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a rare disease, which occurs when an animal’s skin overreacts to certain small molecules in the environment. Substances, which can cause allergic contact dermatitis in dogs include some antibiotics applied to the skin, metals such as nickel, materials like rubber or wool and chemicals such as dyes and carpet deodorizers.

Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when the dog’s skin is ex-posed to intensely irritating chemicals like the sap in poison ivy or road salt.

What are the symptoms of allergic and irritant contact der-matitis?

Lesions occur on the areas of skin that are sparsely haired and exposed to the off ending cause. Areas like the back of the paws, abdomen, muzzle, and lips.

The aff ected areas are usually very red, have small bumps or blister-like lesions, and itch like crazy. Also in irritant con-tact dermatitis may occur.

The key to managing these dog allergies symptoms is the obvious removing or restricting of exposure to any allergen or contact irritant in the pet’s environment. If you’re not able to do this, then using fatt y acids, antihistamines, biotin, and topical shampoos can at least control the itching.

As a rule, for any pet suspected of having an allergy prob-lem that could include an allergic contact component, we recommend:

Glass or stainless steel food and water bowls, cleaned and rinsed well daily

Hypoallergenic detergents for the pet’s bedding

Routine hypoallergenic shampoos for the pet to remove any allergens

Restricting walking to sidewalks or paved surfaces-com-pletely avoiding the grass, if possible.

Be kind to your pooch!

Hopefully in the not to distant future there will be an easier fi x for all allergies in dogs.
