Day camps are already avai lable in al l

flavors and locations…or are they?

“Certainly there is a need for an arts-

focused day camp that encompasses

and presents al l the arts—from music

to pottery,” the Brainstorming Com-

mittee at ARRAC (known as “Brain-

ers”) decided. Last February we

enthusiastical ly dove in to the

planning process. Li ttle did any of us

know how things would turn out!

We now have one week of Camp

under our belt and aside from being

ti red, we have a wonderful feel ing of

having sown (and sewn) some great

seeds into our inaugural group of

Camp ARTumpka campers.

Over the course of five days we

presented opportuni ties to try to play

the ukulele, learn to sew a yo-yo,

paint a mural , design a t-shi rt, make a

clay percussion instrument, and tel l a

story with your hands whi le dancing.

Parents and honored guests got to

witness the closing presentation at

our last day (see

page 2), but we

invi te you to view

the sl ide show on

skydrive or check

our Facebook page.

ARRAC Hosts Chamber ofCommerce’s Business After Hours

Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce members

met May 8 at ARRAC for Business After

Hours. For some it was a trip down memory

lane, as they once walked the same hal lway

as a high school student.

Chamber guests explored classrooms and the

pottery studio, and heard about the upcom-

ing Camp ARTumpka. Cul inary del ights were

prepared and served by Vanessa Bordlee;

ARRAC members provided punch and tea. A

free membership at the Arts Center was won

by Carl Bledsoe during the raffle.

And FOR FUN, al l attendees were invi ted

and many participated in a col laborative

painting of the Bibb Graves Bridge. The

painting was based on a reference photo

taken from the northwest riverbank and an

outl ine was transferred to a 36" x 44" canvas

by Theresa Wayne, Co-Executive Director.

The finished painting now hangs in the

Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce and

wi l l ci rculate among participating Wetumpka

businesses. At a later date, the painting wi l l

be auctioned for a community project. I f

your business would l ike to participate in

displaying this painting for a month or two,

TUESDAY, MAY 22, Three Seasons Art League

met at the Arts Center to paint their own

col laborative mural . The abstract design was

of their own creation. They suppl ied their

own brushes and paints, whi le Frank Sul l ivan,

ARRAC Board member, had bui l t the frame,

which Theresa Wayne stretched with canvas

and primed. I t was truly a col laborative group

effort from many hands.

Col laborative art projects may be a fun activi ty for your group. Cal l for more

information, 578-9485.

ONE ARTS CENTER’S TRASH i s another arti st’s bird

feeder. We arti sts are very frugal people. We

supported “green” even before i t was popular.

We paint outdoors (“plein air”). Our studios

are often unheated or uncooled garages or

attics. We keep our art suppl ies forever. We

col lect odd things for use in sculpture

projects. . .before we know it our spouse refers

to our creative stash as “junk.”

Yes, even an Arts Center must clean out the

unused i tems, which is precisely what we did

May 12 at our Indoor Yard Sale. We made over

$300 whi le we disposed of many things and

were overjoyed when our customers told us

what they planned to do with their new-found treasures:

“These will be perfect at our church bazaar.” (round wood tables)“This will work to display jewelry on.” (wire display racks)All in al l i t was a great day, made even better the next

week when we trucked off the remainders to Robinson

Recyclers on Tal lassee Hwy.. .
