On the cover is depicted an overview of Lanco Amarkantak Thermal Power Station. Incorporated in the year 2003, Lanco Amarkantak Power Ltd (LAPL) is a coal based thermal power plant of 1920 MW comprising 2 units of 300 MW, and 2 units of 660 MW each with super critical technology.

The strategic location of Lanco Amarkantak at Pathadi village near Korba in the state of Chhattisgarh has the advantage of proximity to coal mines and water resources. This enables the company to supply power at most competitive tariff. LAPL has received all the statutory clearances and approvals required for the first two units of 300 MW and both the units were successfully synchronized with the Western Region Grid. The first unit was synchronised on May 1, 2009 and the second unit was synchronised on February 22, 2010.

LAPL has the distinction of being amongst the first few coal based IPPs in the country to achieve financial closure and start construction. LAPL is also amongst the first few coal based power plants in the country to achieve full load in a record time of about one month after synchronization for both the Units.

Encouraged by the success achieved in the first phase, LAPL has decided to expand the project with addition of 2x660 MW (Units 3 & 4) supercritical units to the installed capacity. This capacity addition is a significant step towards realisation of Lanco’s ambitious growth plan of achieving 15000 MW by 2015.

At LAPL, the dedicated team of over 500 employees is fully geared up for the fast-track completion of the project without compromising on safety and quality. They also strive for the development of the society by implementing various CSR initiatives in the neighbouring project areas.

Timeline

The new financial year begins with a positive note as the Country is back on the growth trajectory and the recent budget presented by the Finance Minister has laid down a clear roadmap for achieving fiscal consolidation, which was one of the major concerns for Indian economy. This we believe will send the right signals to the global community and is a step in the right direction towards earning sovereign credit ratings for our Country.

Before the global melt down, the economy grew at an average rate of about 9%. However, despite adverse circumstances, our economy continued to grow by 6.7% in 2008-09 and accelerated to 7.2% in 2009-2010. These are well above those seen in the developed world, and also reflect the underlying strengths of our economy.

The budget continues to lay stress on physical infrastructure development, citing as one of the key catalysts in maintaining the economic growth

rate. By allocating 46% of the total plan outlay on the country’s infrastructure development; the government has accorded highest priority and shown its commitment towards this sector which, we at Lanco see as highly encouraging.

Enthused with the spirit of optimism all over, it is time for us to bring in formal approach to all our business verticals. With Power Generation and EPC as our strengths, the focus should now be to aggressively explore opportunities in Roads, Transmission, Distribution and other emerging infra sectors. The blue print to sustain our growth strategy is in place. However, to perform efficiently, we need to now look at our current organization structure and if required, be flexible enough to re-structure the organization design to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves.

Our rapid growth calls for strong leaders at all levels besides additional manpower. We need to develop

systems and processes to identify the performers within the organization. To achieve this objective the starting point is Performance Management System (PMS). Create a ‘Star Performer Category’ and put them through a training process so that they can be seen as future leaders. The thrust however, should be on Quality and not on Quantity.

In order to make PMS effective values have to be practiced at the apex level. We have to be absolutely sincere and honest in conducting the performance appraisal. We need to come out of our emotions and relationships, be fair and unbiased. This exercise must reflect our professionalism and focused approach to bring out the best in-house talent.

It is our strong belief that 90% of our future leaders for our organization will come from within the ranks of Lanco Group. The road map to churn out such leaders in the next 3 to 5 years has been worked out and is

being implemented now. ‘Lanco Learning Center’ near Gurgaon is a major HR initiative in this direction wherein employees at all levels shall be put into a training module to gain developmental, functional and leadership skills to drive our various businesses.

As we prepare ourselves to move ahead into the next league, it is time for us to strengthen our core values and for being a global organization, it is imperative that we prioritize, understand and adopt best practices in all the business activities.

I truly appreciate the efforts being made for the deployment of our Mission, Vision and Values across the Group. The need now is to adapt and practice these values in our daily lives as a discipline. This in my opinion would not only improve our lives at an individual level but also collectively provide an impetus to the overall growth of the organization besides help us realizing our vision of “Development of Society through Entrepreneurship.”

with passion & fervour... Mission Vision and Values roll out

Businesses exist even without Mission, Vision and Values. The Charisma of the business leader can drive a business to surging heights, but no sooner does such a leader step down, the business falters. Sustainable business demands energies of all the employees to be focused and channelized into a single framework – a common ideal that excites them and inspires them to achieve. Mission, Vision and Values are those very ideals. Individuals and Businesses may exist without a purpose, but as W Clement Stone says: “When you discover your mission, you will feel its demand. It will fill you with enthusiasm and a burning desire to get to work on it.” Well, it is this work that makes life fulfilling and rewarding.

Corporate Communications was given the responsibility of disseminating the Mission, Vision and Values in tandem with Corporate HR and Strategic Business Unit Heads. The expected outcome of this MVVs rollout programme is to ensure that all Lanconians understand, adopt and practice our MVVs.The MVVs rollout programme was conducted across twelve locations. Close to 4000 employees were covered in 31

batches. All Lanconians were briefed and given to understand the true meaning of each and every word that forms our Mission, Vision and Values and the reason for its adoption. Queries of employees were answered by using allegoric stories and sharing of relevant experiences of the participants. Promotional material such as MVVs pocket books and note pads were distributed during the programme and Posters and Standees of our MVVs were prominently displayed in the Training Hall. For the benefit of those that do not understand English, the MVVs were translated into local languages and local instructors were engaged. The MVVs rollout is extremely important for us because we want every Lanconian to fully participate and be an integral part of our Mission, Vision and Values. The expected outcome of our Mission, Vision and Values rollout is that we expect all employees to speak in one voice about our MVVs. And all individual, department and strategic business goals are to be aligned to the Mission, Vision and Values.

“There are two important days in your life: the day you were born, and the day you find out why you were born.”

Carl Townsend

On 30 October 2009, at a conclave of the senior management of Lanco, our Chairman unveiled our Mission, Vision and Values.

N Sudhakara Moorthy, Sr Vice President - HR:The focus and energy with which the Corporate Affairs is driving the dissemination of the MVVs to every nook and corner of our Group is really appreciable. The zeal Lanconians are displaying at every level across the Group during the MVV Rollout is highly encouraging and promising. The euphoria has begun. The Awareness of What, Why and How of MVVs has almost reached each of us.

This Awareness has to evolve into Knowledge; Knowledge into Deep Understanding, leading to an Internalisation resulting in a Transformed Collective Behaviour – Lanco Culture – the unique way in which every Lanconian thinks and interacts with people inside and outside the Group. This calls for a continued and consistent communication of MVVs with a focus on how to LIVE IT [put into practice] by the Corporate Affairs ably supported and strengthened by synergetic initiatives at the Companies/Divisions of the Group driven by the respective CEOs through collaborative efforts of their HoDs and HR.

CSR

Since inception of Lanco Kondapalli Power Pvt Ltd, Lanco Foundation has been actively involved in providing sustainable livelihood to Kondapalli artisans. The Foundation’s key intervention areas have been Institution building, Product development and Marketing. After witnessing significant progress in the formation and strengthening of Mutually Aided Cooperative Society of Artisans, where-in the artisan collectively play a lead role in the entire value chain; Lanco Foundation shifted its focus towards product development and Marketing of Kondapalli toys. Essentially, this shift has been triggered by baseline needs assessment done by CHITRIKA in the year 2008-09.

In the current year, Artisan Cooperative suggested a credit plan to meet the credit requirements of 106 artisans, primarily for product development. Lanco Foundation in consultation with the cooperative has designed a credit plan under which each artisan would get Rs 3000/- for product development (a

total of Rs 3,18,000/- for 106 artisans) in addition to Rs 1 lakh being provided as SEED money to the cooperative society for collective product development and marketing. To further enhance the marketing potential of artisan community, Lanco Foundation with the support of Corporate Communications department has developed a Catalogue describing the products and the price list.

On 28 March 2010, L Rajagopal, Chairman, Lanco Foundation handed over a cheque of Rs 4,18,000/- to the artisan cooperative at a public function held in Bommala (Toys) Colony. Product catalogue was also formally released and copies were handed over to the leaders of the cooperative.

Lanco’s efforts to revive the craft of Kondapalli toy making were recently recognised and reported by Business Standard and Sakshi (regional news paper). The articles highlighted current issues being faced by the community and Lanco’s efforts in providing sustainable livelihood to the artisans.

Kondapalli toys Focus shifts to Institution building, product development and marketing

According to UNESCO, of the 75 million children of primary school age who are out of school, one third are children with disabilities; over 90 per cent of children with disabilities in developing countries do not attend school; an estimated 30 per cent of the world’s street children live with disabilities. During the current year, Lanco Foundation has taken a paradigm shift in its approach to disability by adding prevention, education, livelihoods and access components so as to ensure that persons with disabilities realise their full potential and maximise their socio-economic contribution to society.

These components are piloted from the current financial year in Vijayawada of Andhra Pradesh through the existing Artificial Limb Fitting centre. As part of this programme, L Rajagopal, Chairman, Lanco Foundation has handed over scholarships to 10 children with disabilities from the neighbourhood communities of Lanco Kondapalli Power Pvt Ltd.

CSR

Research on influence of CSR on internal stakeholders (i.e. employees) proved that CSR initiatives increase employee–company identification (E–C identification). E–C identification, in turn, influences employees’ commitment to their company. On the basis of these findings, it is argued that CSR performance can be an effective way for companies to maintain a positive relationship with their employees and thus maximise productivity and performance.

Having perceived an increased desire among Lanconians, through interactions, for a long term and meaningful engagement in CSR activities, Lanco Foundation designed ‘Sponsor a beneficiary’ programme in the year 2007-08, with an objective to provide a platform for employees to actively participate in CSR activities. This initiative was effectively integrated with the existing Rehabilitation of the Disabled programme, wherein employee contributions were directly linked to a person with disability through four artificial limb fitting centers spread across 4 states.

After receiving an encouraging response from Lanconians, the scope of this programme has been extended in the year 2009-10 by adding two more programmes to it. Thus the programme has been aptly renamed as “Make a difference in 3 different ways” (MD3).

Training Programmes conducted by Lanco Hills

The background:

Lanco has grown phenomenally in the last two and a half decades. Beginning as a small Construction firm, today Lanco is one of the fastest growing Integrated Infrastructure Enterprises of India, operating across a synergistic span of verticals comprising Power, Non-Power Infrastructure, Construction, EPC, Property Development and Renewables. The current market capitalisation of Lanco is approximately Rs. 12,000 Crores (USD 2.59 billion), of which about 68% equity stake is held by its promoters. Its gross revenue as on March 2009 was over Rs. 6000 Crores (USD 1.3 billion).

Lanco’s rich experience in development of power projects, Construction and Civil Engineering has enabled it to create a niche for itself besides building powerful knowledge bank and systems which facilitate continuous adoption and implementation of best practices and technologies.

Challenges of sustaining growth:

Lanco has to be held together with a core purpose, an ideal that will motivate every employee, in order to sustain its diverse and fast-paced growth. Lanco also requires a framework that will excite the employees to achieve and outperform. The large groups of talented employees also have to be aligned with a shared Mission and Vision, which act as a source of inspiration to them besides enabling them with an energising environment. Further, an Organisation Design, aligned with Business Plans and Strategies founded on an empowering culture based on core values, is of vital importance towards the realisation of the Mission and Vision.

Addressing the challenges: the first few steps

As the first step, Lanco’s Mission, Vision and Values were shared by the Chairman at the second CEOs Forum and adopted on 30 October 2009 at Gurgaon. Next, a massive rollout campaign to create awareness of the MVVs and to motivate the employees at all levels was spearheaded by Corporate Communications. Further, detailed business plans and strategies were formulated by each

of the verticals, which included the setting up of goals and targets in line with their business strategies. With the MVVs and Business Plans in place, the focus then shifted to ‘Organisation Design’.

Organisation Design Initiatives:

Detailed Organisation Structure along with the Roles and responsibilities for each business unit for all positions up to level 2 has been worked out. The Job Description along with KRAs up to AGM level has also been finalised. Presently, the recruitment for the New Organisation Structure is taking place after considering internal talent.

Among further steps: Lanco Learning Centre

The challenge now is to institutionalise systems and processes which will ensure swift achievement of our goals. One of the major initiatives is to establish ‘Lanco Learning Centre’ to meet the demands of competency enhancement and leadership development on a continuous basis in a customised manner. Steps are also undertaken to identify fast-track growth opportunities/Star Performers. We are furthering the development of a Lanco Culture through internalisation of our Values.

My Childhood and Education:

Born in Miryala Village in Nalgonda district, I had the privilege to do my schooling in the natural setting of my village till the 7th Standard. For the next two years, in my 8th and 9th standard, I had to walk 5 km across lush green fields to reach my school. I remember those days when I and my friends used to steal peanuts and corn from the nearby fields en route to our school with the farmers chasing us. It was so much fun!

I was an average student in school and college with a keen interest in sports and extracurricular activities. I was captain of the college volleyball team and represented my college at the University level. I also actively participated in cultural activities. I completed Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1986 from Siddhartha Engineering College, Vijayawada. During my Engineering studies, I was the Hostel Secretary for two years and sometimes had to miss important lectures and assignments. But Professor Balakrishna, who also happened to be the Warden of the Hostel, was very supportive and helped me with attendance and

assignments. I am indebted to him as it was his guidance and support that helped me in completing my Engineering Graduation.

My Family:

I married Gayatri in 1991 at Vijayawada. It was an arranged marriage. I am quite fortunate to have such a devoted and an understanding partner who handles household issues so calmly and quietly. I am blessed with two children: a son and a daughter. My Son, Aakash is in 12th Standard. He is fond of Science and Engineering and has a technical bent of mind. I like his temperament and his curiosity to learn. My daughter, Joshita is in 2nd Class. She is very active and playful. I unwind by playing with her. I find spending time with her both exhausting as well as refreshing. The nature of my job makes me travel away from home frequently, sometimes as many as 15-20 days a month, and during such times, Gayatri handles home and the children adeptly. She is also a wonderful cook and I especially like Tomato Chicken that she prepares.

My Career:

After completing my Engineering, I joined 2-3 organisations in the Construction Sector and worked for more than 9 years overseeing various construction projects. Having gained considerable experience in Real Estate Projects, Building Projects and other Construction Projects including the Construction of Power Plants etc, I decided to move on and start my own Construction business along with my friends.

I was doing quite well in my own business before I decided to join Lanco in 2005, where I was offered a senior position in the Real Estate Division of Lanco. My rich experience in the construction sector was instrumental in my being transferred to the Construction Division of Lanco in 2007. I was thrilled to be a part of construction of Lanco Hills Project right from the planning stage itself. Lanco Hills was my first challenge. Automation, mechanisation and innovation in construction techniques saw us fulfill the dream of our chairman, L Madhusudhan Rao of achieving the slab cycle time of 4 days at Lanco Hills. This was indeed a landmark achievement for us for which I heartily congratulate all my team members.

My Hobbies:

Most of the times I unwind by spending quality time with my family. I do occasionally go for quiet dinner or sometimes see an occasional movie, but home is where my heart is. I also have an in-house gym, where I work out regularly.

My Message to Lanconians:

Transparency in work is of supreme importance. If we show Transparency in our work, Self Confidence will follow. Once we have confidence in ourselves, in our team and in our Company… work will be done automatically.

B Manohar, Director of the Construction Division of Lanco Infratech Ltd, is of the firm belief that leadership starts with transparency. “In this digital age where business moves at high speed, transparency is an obligation that needs to be cultivated by leadership and employees,” he says. In a chat with Lanco News, B Manohar opens up further…

A courageous, innovative leader

After completing his intermediate studies, Meena Reddy joined Lanco Infratech Ltd as a Chauffeur, in January 1996 at Hyderabad. Initially he worked with Col P R Rao, and later on he was assigned to L Rajagopal, the founder Chairman of Lanco, as his personal Chauffeur.

Working with L Rajagopal was an exciting experience for him during which he learnt the value of time management. He has seen Lanco grow manifold under the able leadership of L Rajagopal and later, L Madhusudhan Rao. “I had expected a decent increment every year,” he says, “But to my utter surprise, I was rewarded way beyond my expectations...” “Lanco certainly knows how to take care of its employees,” he proudly adds.

His wife Kavitha is an excellent cook, a good painter and extremely talented in tailoring. They are blessed with two children: Preetham, their son who is in 4th Class and Thanvi, their daughter who is in 1st Class.

Chanakya and the Chinese Minister

Once a Chinese minister came to meet Chanakya at his house in the evening, saying he had heard of his greatness even in far away China, and wanted an audience with him. Chanakya was busy with matters pertaining to the administration of the Mauryan kingdom, and politely requested his guest to wait for some time. After he had finished his work he extinguished the lamp that he had been using for illumination, lighted another, and turned to his visitor with a smile, saying “Now we can talk”.

The minister asked him “pardon my curiosity, Sir, but would mind telling me why you blew out that lamp and lit another, just to talk to me ?”

Chanakya replied “When you came, I was preoccupied with matters of the State, and was using a lamp with oil supplied by the kingdom. But now that I have finished my work and am attending to you in my personal capacity, I feel it is only appropriate to use my own lamp and my own oil”

Lord Ram and Sabari

During the 14-year exile of Lord Ram from his kingdom, there lived a tribal woman called Sabari in the midst of a deep forest, serving a Rishi by sweeping his hut, collecting firewood and doing other domestic duties. The sage was pleased at her devotion and, when the time came for him breathe his last, he called her to him and said, “Sabari, after I have gone, devote yourself to Lord Ram with all your heart. Be patient and you will see : He will come personally to bless you in this very hut.”

In the days that passed, Sabari lived in constant anticipation of the Lord’s arrival. She would get up in the morning to collect fruits for Him, tasting each one to see whether it was sweet enough. Every day she would sweep the path that He would take to reach her hut.

There were other sages who lived in the same forest, but everyone of them stayed at some distance away from her hut, not wanting to reside in proximity to a tribal woman who was considered untouchable. They scoffed at the tribal woman’s temerity to expect that the Lord would visit her ignoring the great sages living in this forest.

The day at last arrived when Lord Ram passed through the forest alongwith with his consort Sita and brother Laxman. Bypassing all the Rishis, He went straight to the humble cottage of Sabari. She was overjoyed and offered Him the basket of fresh fruits she had laboriously collected that day from the forest. She would taste each fruit to see whether it was sweet enough and offer it to the Lord; and He would eat it with a smile without batting an eye lid.

Leadership is a complex phenomenon which involves the leader, the followers and the situation. It manifests during interaction of the Leader with Followers in any situation. The Oxford Dictionary defines important concepts related to leadership as: “the state or position of being a leader”; Leader as “a person who leads a group of people, especially the head of a country, an organisation etc”and Lead as “to go with or in front of a person or an animal to show the way or to make them go in the right direction”. Various researchers have focused on different traits or attributes of the leader like personality, physical appearance, behavior etc., others have studied relationship between leaders and followers; some others have focused on situational aspect of leadership. Personally, I find the definition given by Roach and Behling (1984), to be technically closest to the meaning of leadership: “The process of influencing an organised group towards accomplishing its goals”. This definition is silent on moral or ethical aspect of leadership and its purpose. It also does not say anything about justifications of means or ends. Hence it is purely a technical definition.

Leadership is Both a Science and an Art

Leadership is a science, because it has been a subject of scientific enquiry from historical times. An art, because some managers may be effective leaders without taking any training on leadership, whereas, in contrast some experts on the subject may be very poor leaders themselves, in practical situations. The skill in analysing and responding to situations varies greatly across leaders.

Leadership is Both Rational and Emotional

Leadership involves both rational/logical approach, as well as, emotional side of human relationships. At times the leader may have to act on the basis

of reason and logic, and at times the decision might be purely inspirational or emotional. In fact in any group situation the leader may have to take into account differences in thoughts, feelings, aspirations, goals and ambitions of the group members or target audience in mind.

Roles in Organisations

In organisations, leadership is essentially connected with the exercise of power and authority. We would try to examine the role of a leader in an organisation in some detail. This is one of the most important roles, discharged by any member, in any organisation. Numerous researches have taken place on this subject. In business organisation this role is normally discharged in conjunction with another formal role. A shop floor supervisor provides leadership to his team in the factory, similarly a branch head is expected to function as a leader in his territory. Functional leaders, like marketing managers, technical heads, and finance managers, are all expected to provide leadership to their respective departments. The CEO is expected to lead the entire team, and provide vision, direction, guidance, and motivate the team, to attain corporate

objectives. Theoretically the CEO is expected to provide leadership to the entire organisation. However, in real life, people closer to the scene of day to day action, like foremen, managers and chief accountants etc. discharge leadership role, in a limited way, within their functional area in conjunction with their line responsibilities. Thus we observe that in real life, leadership is widely dispersed / distributed within the organisation.

Every organisation should try and encourage people to take charge and initiate solutions. Gradually, with experience, the team members will attain the capability to operate independently and manage day to day situations. - Sharad Jhingan, COO-Private Equity Fund

‘India’s New Capitalists’, authored by Harish Damodaran, is a string of stories of pioneering entrepreneurs, who rose from the throes of feudal India to become the country’s successful businesspersons and capitalists. The emphasis is on the socio-economic phenomenon of only a few castes throwing up a majority of the money-spinners. The book is published by ‘Permanent Black’ in 2008 and its paperback edition is released now.

I found the 4th Chapter, about the Telugu speaking population, interesting and really informative. It ends with three case studies, Andhra Sugars, the Lanco Group and Matrix Laboratories.

The 4 page write up on Lanco, together with other passages about Lanco, makes an inspiring-read, more particularly for persons of my ilk, who are not aware of its origins. But for the fear of incurring the wrath of copyright law, I would have attached the excerpts. The book is worth buying and reading.

Editorial

Challenges are what make work interesting; overcoming them is what makes work meaningful. Our Vision for 2015 envisages ambitious goals of which we are by now familiar. Aligned to these goals, we are prepared for challenges that lie ahead of us. Meeting these challenges and achieving the outlined goals will require a special effort from us... And the key to our success will be creativity and innovation.

As you read along, you will witness that the two major news this quarter have been - the synchronisation of Amartantak (Unit-II) and commissioning of Drinidhar HEP. The projects, despite of many constraints and challenges finished well on time. You may wonder what has creativity to do with this. Creativity or innovation is not essentially inventing something new; it is rather an attitude where one views problems as opportunities for improvement. It is the way we blend motivation, time, effort and skill for achieving a respective target.

Innovation, however, begins with creative ideas. At Lanco facilities across India, we have seen some very good examples of innovation, those that recently won Lanco’s Innovation Awards. These innovative ideas of our colleagues have motivated and inspired us to be creative at our workplace.

Creativity is often sparked by ‘fun’. A study by the Business Council of Australia found that ‘fun’ was one of the key elements of extraordinary, productive workplaces. Fun, humour, laughter and playfulness all help us to be more creative and see the world in a different way. Seeing things differently helps us to break old patterns and develop unique products and innovative ways of doing things.

At Lanco, let us have fun in our workplace while simultaneously pursuing our challenging, ambitious goals. Through creativity and innovation, let us transform Lanco into an enterprise that will be admired for the quality of its people and for inspiring growth…
