Lately we’ve been hearing about natural disasters everywhere. In Chile the 8.8 earthquake that killed a few hundred people, the 7.0 Haiti earthquake that was estimated to have killed more than 230,000 people and recently tornados that could have caused major damage.

It may seem the world is going crazy recently with economic problems, diseases, natural disasters, and corrupt occurrences.

Not only are people freaking out about Mother Nature but also about the scary things this world is becoming.

All of this leads to having people believe the world is going to end.

Hmm, now let’s not get too carried away and believe everything we hear, but for those that do believe, they say there is evidence the world may end soon, or more like 2012.

“I think no one really knows when the world will end, but all the predictions going on are kind of scary,” said Senior Tiffany Graham.

Here’s one of the supposed evidence, sun storms, scientists or solar experts believe that the energy output of which the sun releases will be getting worst and could reach its deadly point around 2012.

When the sun eats up our earth, of course you know what will happen. But again lets’ not believe everything we hear, not all is true.

The Mayan calendar which I think most of us have heard of is a complex system of time-tracking developed by the Mayan civilization.

Since there is no evidence that this calendar was meant to be repeated, some believe that at the end of the cycle, the Mayans expected the world to end, (December 21 2012). Astrologers and scientists looking further into the calendar have said that on December 21 2012 an Apocalypse or major global event could happen.

Now all the talk about the world ending is way too much to be certain of. Don’t you ever wonder if we really have the knowledge to know when things are going to happen, maybe on certain things we do but not when the earth is going to end! Like an old quote goes.

“Don’t worry about the world ending today; it’s already tomorrow in Australia.”

The earth and it features are complicated and we don’t have the sufficient knowledge to know what will happen, we hardly know what is happening right now and why.

Though you believe this or not, there probably is one person that decides when to push the big, red stop button.

Both groups were even escorted by a Disney cast member to their sessions. “We got to the studio and were given a folder full of music”, Anastasia King recalls, “We then met our guest clinician for the day.” The band recorded pieces from The Emperor’s New Groove, Atlantis, and Dinosaur. The choir got to put their own flare into hits from Lilo & Stitch, Mulan, and Pocahontas.

Atheist Symbol

The Mormon Angel Moroni, the LDS faith’s symbol.

Religion: “A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs,” Dictionary.com

When the word “Religion” is brought up, what are normally some people’s responses? “Hey man, what’s your Religion?” Or “What are your believes?” Normally, it doesn’t matter what your faith is. But people can judge you by what it is.

JHS junior and foreign exchange student from Germany, Harsha Sekhri, was brought up in her Family to believe in God and only God. “Since coming to America, I’ve attended a church and now believe more in everything, and not just God.”

Sekhri said that when she sees another student being judged on their Religion, it just makes her mad. “People believe in God, I believe it is the same God, He’s just viewed at from different angles, different religions.”

Senior Austin Clegg is one of the many Latter-Day-Saints that has seen people being judged on their Religion. “It’s not fair in life to judge a person by what you hear about them from others,” Clegg said.

Clegg said, “To solve this problem, we need to truly understand what the Religion stands for. It is like the statement, ‘Never judge a book by its cover.’ It’s never good to stereotype a person.”

Another big Religion that can be found here at JHS is the Catholic Religion.

JHS senior, Ethan Lopez, is a Catholic who has never seen people being judged on their Religion, but still doesn’t think its right to hear about people being judged on what they believe in. “You shouldn’t be judged on what you believe in, it’s wrong,” said Lopez.

There are also many people out in the world who are not sure what to believe, but more along the lines of believing in the Scienece. Atheism is a fairly comman belief, but there are still people who judge an Atheist by what they believe in.

JHS freshman, Kelsey Noble, is an atheist herself. She’s been an atheist for a couple years now. It was at Magic Valley Christian School where she was taught things that she didn’t believe in. “I get judged by some people for being an atheist, but it doesn’t bother me. It’s what I believe in,” Noble said.

Religion is something that people look to for guidance. But the reason for people judging you on what you are is a whole different story. Is it right to judge? Not at all.

Sekhri said, “I could be an Atheist, a Mormon, or a Muslim. I would love God regardless of my faith. What I expect is respect and acceptance.”

Death & PrideBy: Harsha Sekhri

Dear Dad,How are you? Are the people in jail treating you well? I hope so. Dad, I have to tell you something. You know, my whole life did I look up to you. You were the example of what I fought for. When the cops ripped you right out of my life, I promised myself that I will always fight against those white people who think they are better than everyone else. Against blacks and those combodians who try to overtake our territory, our land, our neighborhood. But Dad, I realized something. We soend so much time hating each other, fighting and insulting each other... This is no life for us. We don’t even get along with our own people... We don’t like Norenos. It is wrong. Hatred is wrong, Dad!

Love, your daughter

MR. ARREAGAOUR EXPERT

FAQ’s

Vice Principal, Victor Arreaga, has been born and raised inLos Angeles, California. All his life long he’s been exposed to gang life. But did it stop when he moved to good old potato state Idaho? NO!!!

1. Why do gangs exist? On the surface gangs are a place of acceptance and a source of empowerment. The bottom line though is defined by making money by trading and selling guns and drugs!

2. Are there any gangs here in Jerome? Yes. All these gangs from California have been spreading to Idaho. If you don’t believe me, you can just drive into an alley and consider all the “tagging” (posters and symbols that mark territories).

3. Are gangs really as bad as everyone keeps repeating? Cliques, which are a healthier version of gangs are acceptable, they get unheal ty when they become exclusive. Gangs are exclusive.

Inspired by “Freedom Wirter’s”The HierachyAt Jerome High School we do have gang members, the letter could be reality for one of the kids here! We have Noreno’s and Sureno’s at our school. How do we know? All we have to do is look at the dress code in our agenda and look out for what it is trying to prevent us (them) from wearing. “Belts cannot hang from the waist, and gloves for decorative purposes are prohibited,” (14.G.). The accessories mentioned are signs of belonging to a gang. Our teachers are not blind, they know and we should know!JHS, let us prevent Gangs! “Gangs, hate groups and similar organizations or groups which advocate hatred or discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, ancestry, national origin, or disability are inconsistent with the Joint Jerome District policy,” (16.).

World’s Hottest Pepper Fights Terrorism

Explosions, ammunitions, gases, and now the world’s hottest pepper is being used to fight terrorism. Yes, you heard right the world’s hottest pepper called Bhut Jolokia also known as the “Ghost Chili” is being used by the Indian military as a weapon against their enemies. Researchers have found that this hot chili is more than 125,000 times spicier than a jalapeno. The Indian military has decided to use the Bhut Jolokia as a chili powered grenade to smoke out its insurgents. In 2007 the Bhut Jolokia was given the title of the world hottest chili by the Guinness World Records.“Whoa, its cool how they’re using a hot pepper as a weapon now,” said Junior Cynthia Sedano.Ideas have been flowing around to expand the use of

this hot pepper. Now a new idea is to make spray cans with the chili’s powder, in order for women to protect themselves against attackers and for police to control unstable mobs. This Ghost chili is available only in the Indian Northeast region, where it is better grown because of the mountainous regions, heat and humidity there. Everyone knows that even a single seed put in your mouth can give anyone severe pain for up to 30 minutes. The Ghost Chili is sometimes used to cure summer heat and stomach illness. Also in some parts of the Indian region people place these chilis on their fences to keep wild animals such as elephants away from their home.

Cheerleaders

What is the hardest part about being a cheerleader? Our Lady TigersTwo highschool cheerleaders are asked, “What does it take to be a cheerleader?”

Laurann Gridley said, “Hard work and tons of evergy!!” She also made comments on how hard it is to keep up with cheer, and school. “Well, right now we are practicing for competition, so we practice our dance, then our cheer, and then our stunting routine. The last half an hour we do conditioning! It is a lot of work!” said Courtney Amos.

When asked what their favorite part of cheerleading was, Amos responded enthusiastically with “Stunting, and being able to meet new people every year.”

And Gridley said, “Stunting and tumbling, and getting to show off.”

Both Cheerleaders said that the hardest part of cheerleading was getting people, who don’t get along, to work together. Also, they said it’s hard to concentrate strictly on cheer. “We can’t be a team when everyone is mad at each other.” said Gridley.

If you are planning on trying out for the cheer squad, some advice would be, “Work on your abs now! Trust me, there is nothing worse than not being in shape and doing all sorts of activities!” said Amos.

Smoking Dangers

How Attractive!

Second- hand smoking is something everyone does, or so everyone thinks. As everyone knows smoking is bad! We hear this ALL the time, in newspaper ads, sometimes parents, and of course T.V. blah, blah, blah. We always tend to not pay attention to the real danger of things, especially smoking, until it is too late. In movies smoking is usually done by a troubled person or a cute mysterious guy, but in reality smoking is NOT “cute” or “cool” at all.

Don’t you ever wonder why people smoke anyways? It doesn’t make you stronger like steroids or make you feel “out of this world.” All it does is give you a little bit of nicotine with a dozen more life threatening diseases.

First of all I’ll start out by saying smoking affects EVERYONE, not just the person who does it. The smoke taken in and out penetrates everything with dangerous toxins. Chemicals, second-hand smoking has are Ammonia (irritates lungs), Carbon Monoxide (reduces oxygen in blood), Methanol (toxic when inhaled or swallowed), and Hydrogen cyanide (a potent poison that interferes with respiratory function).

Now remember these are just a few!

“Smoking is pretty gross, I don’t like how people do it all the time but I guess it’s their decision,” said Junior Rosa Hernandez.

Let’s take a minute and try to use our imagination. Let’s imagine us as smokers, let a few years pass by and take a look at what smoking has turned you into. So now after a few years of smoking we are either missing our jaw or lips, (Oh yah, bet everyone will want to kiss us) going around everywhere carrying our huge, very attractive oxygen tanks that are keeping us alive. But that’s not the best part, now let’s imagine talking, something we all love to do, but instead of doing it

normally like everyone else we’re going to use a machine that makes us sound like an evil robot, Which tends to creep people out at first. Hmmm, I don’t know about you, but I really don’t want to go through that. Good thing we’re the ones that choose to be like that or not ,right.

Sometimes relationships are tricky. Well, heck, would they be relationships if they weren’t? The most important thing for you to do, when confronted with a relationship problem, is to hold tight. Tell them how you feel. Be sensitive but be honest. Give it a chance to work itself out, but don’t agree to compromises you can’t actually live with. Life is a dance between strength and flexibility, you know. Bend, but don’t break.

Leo

You start this grand old month out by having a grand old time. Yep, you are in high gear. You’re full of fun and you know how to get the people around you to join in. It’s fantastic! Enjoy this terrific kickoff to one of the most energetic of

seasons. A few new beginnings are in store for your private life this spring, too. You are really ready to nurture your

creativity. Excellent! Get nurturing! Your enthusiasm is totally catching on. But be careful -- so is that springtime sniffle. Be sure to wash your hands every couple of hours. Get crafty

with those oh-so-creative hands of yours.

Libra

Take a big breath when you wake up: It’s going to be a great day. In fact, you’re all set to have a fantastic, terrific,

stupendous, tremendous, month. Your energy is good, your hair is just right and those new glasses are really doing

wonders for your style. You’re hot stuff, in short. And you’re pretty happy about it! Use this time to expand some of your

horizons. Dare to dream: Quicker than you think, those dreams could become reality. You might feel like you have too much to do. Take a step back. Take a nap. Drink some

tea. Meditate.

Scorpio

On the one hand, you really want things to continue as they are. On the other hand, you kind of wish they would change. What to do? You might find various life decisions -- from what kind of toothpaste you want to use to whether or not you and that special somebody should get married

-- kind of difficult to make. Don’t despair. Try your best to live with the contradictions and emotional unrest your

conflicting desires bring up. The answers to all your questions will be clear! Or, some of them will be. There’s nothing quite like knowing just what you want, is there?

Sagittarius11/22 – 12/21

You have a day that could only be described as luxuriously social. You are the belle (or beaux) of the ball, and everyone wants to be your friend. Well, given just how great you really are, who could blame them? Be sure to enjoy all of this great energy as it flows through your life like a clear, clean, shiny river. It will buoy you up throughout the month, whenever your energy flags - Take a nap and give yourself a chance to recharge. You communicate everything you need to communicate -- or else!

Capricorn12/22 – 1/19

You feel like you are totally focused on work. So why do you feel like nothing is happening? Well, don’t worry. Sometimes your total focus is what’s demanded by the situation, but the situation still takes its sweet time to shift direction. Don’t worry: Things will change. You’re feeling nicely detached, when it comes to making a big decision. Great! You can make the most objective possible choice. Just don’t forget to check in with your heart, too, before you sign along the dotted line.

Aquarius1/20 – 2/18

You are one brainy bird. You could think your way out of any situation. You could figure out the answers to the biggest problems of the universe (or at least, that’s how it feels sometimes). You could be confronted with a couple of tricky issues, but as long as you realize that you, for one, don’t need a thinking cap, you’ll have no problem untangling all those knots. You feel sensitive and sensual. You tune in, but make sure you know when to tune back out. Discipline yourself for best results in all areas of your life on.

Aries3/21 – 4/19

You know how sometimes you sit there looking at the last delicious chewy chocolate chip cookie left on the plate, and even though you have already had your fair share

and somebody else hasn’t yet you just really, really want to reach out and take that cookie before anyone else

gets? Suppress that all-too natural urge. Sure, you want the cookie. But this month, do your best to give in to your more compassionate, generous, and humanitarian urge. Don’t take the cookie! Success will follow your exercising

of your better, higher instincts.

Taurus4/20 – 5/20

Don’t spread yourself too thin when it comes to pampering yourself. That’s right: You’re sweeter than grape jelly, and you deserve only the best! Moody? Jealous? Full of all kinds of plans for revenge against people who don’t even know they annoyed you? Well, with your passionate nature, that’s to be expected now and then! So if you’re feeling kind of off kilter, don’t worry: You’ll straighten everything out, eventually. Go for a tension-releasing jog. Your sudden deep understanding of a long simmering problem astounds everyone.

Gemini5/21 – 6/21

Heck, it might not even be starting to look like spring where you are as this month begins. But whether the first crocuses are raising their heads or a thick blanket of snow covers the earth or folks are just starting to go out in their bikinis, you’re

going to be having fun -- sun or no sun! You are just plain hardwired to have a good time. What could be better? How about finding a special somebody to share all this fun with?

So put in some serious effort!

Cancer6/22 – 7/22

Are things not going quite as totally, completely, 100 percent smoothly as they possibly could be at home? And are they still a little rocky? Well, there’s only one

thing to be done: Deal, deal, deal. Yep, the sooner you confront this stuff, the sooner you’ll come to a satisfactory

resolution. The longer you put it off, the less likely you are to resolve it. Ever. But one thing is for sure: You’re all turned around! Do your very, very best to be positive and

the tide will turn in your direction.

Virgo8/23 – 9/22

You definitely want to be trying all kinds of new things, but you don’t want to be committing yourself to something you’re just starting to get involved with. This goes for relationships as much as it goes for financial schemes -- and that super-intense salsa dancing class. Restlessness can be a real plus if you figure out how to channel it into a constructive activity. Otherwise, you’ll just be left feeling antsy. But do your best to be as constructive as possible.
