ERROL BARROW CENTRE FOR CREATIVE IMAGINATIONhttp://www.cavehill.uwi.edu/ebcci/

The Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination (EBCCI) welcomes Barbados again to its annual end of year celebrations with student productions in Theatre, Dance, Film and Music. Last year the EBCCI celebrated the close of the academic year under the theme Imagine Reel Art hosting South African Films and their Directors Dr. Anthony Fisher and Abdulkadir Said, the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase and the Director of the Caribbean’s Premier Animation Festival Anime Caribe and University of Trinidad and Tobago’s Animation Programme Director; Camille Selvon Abrahams.

This year’s celebration marks the return of the EBCCI’s its International Diaspora Festival in association with the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Department of Language, Linguistics and Literatures as it celebrates and explores the Cuban Diaspora led by lecturers Dr Grisel Pujala and Leandro Soto Faculty of the Department of LLL and EBCCI respectively.

This investigation into the narrative of the Cuban American Diaspora seeks to examine the Cuban culture of displacement for the past 200 years. This festival discourse will include CAFE X (Cuban American Foremost Exhibition) which explores the integration of diverse cultural elements in Cuban diasporic art and literature by rethinking themes of nationhood and displaced identity.

There will be a full day Symposium on Saturday March 27th 2010 from 10a.m. with guests Neri Tores, Dancer and Choreographer and Dr. Andrea Herrera from the Colorado State University at Colorado Springs in the Cinemathque of the (EBCCI) to discuss these themes. The Cuban exploration commences with the art of Cuban American Artists such as, Israel Leon, Pedro Portal, Tomas Oliva, Ana Flores and co Curator Leandro Soto. Art enthusiasts can look forward to an environmental exhibition in the Art Gallery of the EBCCI with Café Talks with Curators throughout the exhibition which opens the season on Friday March 26th at 7p.m., with diasporic performances. The exhibition will continue until April 23rd 2010.

EBCCI events continued..“My great granny always said, ‘If you want to know a black woman, you touch her hair.' She said that is where we carry everything—all our hopes, our dreams, our pain.” Novelette, Salon Owner.

The End of Semester student celebrations begin on March 27th, World Theatre Day with the first of two west Indian diasporic theatrical productions. The Theatre Ensemble Class presents Da Kink in my Hair by Trey Anthony, directed by Sonia Williams, the production gets to the root of the black woman’s experience, in their psychologist’s couch, their block, their rum shop, a place to air; the hairdresser’s chair. Set initially in a West Indian hair salon in Toronto, this interpretation will transform the George Lamming Pedagogical Centre into Novelette’s Hair Salon. Mixing laughter and tears—and told in words, music and movement—the stories explore the hardship, struggles and joys of black women's lives, Da Kink in my Hair will be staged March 27th and 28th at 7p.m. and 5p.m. and 8p.m respectively.

Theatre enthusiasts can look forward to the original Musical the Seven Tonalities of Blue, on stage April 10th and 11th in the Walcott Warner Theatre. Directed by Leandro Soto, Cuban Artist, the piece is inspired by the Yoruban Orishas, Yemaya (Goddess of the Ocean) and Eleggua (Son of Yameya and God of the pathways/communication and innovation). Integrating dance, poetry, theatre, media, music and song influences of the Caribbean; West African, European, Asian and Native American, the Seven Tonalities of Blue explores the many aspects of the female psyche. Admission is $20.

Debuting last semester, the Pop Music Ensemble will be entertaining again on the terrace of the Walcott Warner Theatre April 16th 2010, from 7p.m., entertaining us with pop, reggae, soca and hip hop. Led by musical director Stefan Walcott, the Pop Ensemble’s lead singer is Mathew Allman. Patrons can look forward to the EBCCI Pop Ensemble’s Friday night Lime with DJ and guest band.

The festival concludes with the Dance Exposition, April 17th & 18th led by Artistic Director Gene Cumberbatch Lynch with choreographies by Olivia Hall, (NIFCA Gold 2009) and final year students Alicia Payne and Gina Mayers. For further information on the End of Year festivities at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination please call 417-4776.

The Memory of Water is a ‘dark comedy’ written by the very talented Shelagh Stephenson

The award winning narrative for comedy is simple - three dysfunctional sisters assemble at the family home for the funeral of their mother. They share memories from versions of their past that are both conscious and unconscious forms of memory. But at the heart of the plot are the healing qualities that memory brings in the face of personal trauma or tragedy. Poignant and funny, this is an evenings entertainment that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next.

BRIDGETOWN GALLERY badmanabadman – an Installation by Alberta Whittle

Homi Bhabha positions the itinerant migrant as the owner of “THE TRUEST EYE”, a position Whittle identifies with. Whittle grew up in Barbados and moved to Scotland, where she is completing her MFA at Glasgow School of Art. She lives and works in both Barbados and Scotland and considers herself a PUREBRED MONGREL. Whittle has undertaken residencies at CESTA (Czech Republic), Market Gallery (Scotland), Collective Gallery (Scotland). She choreographs interactive installations, interventions and performances as site-specific artworks in public and private spaces, including at the Royal Scottish Academy (Scotland) and has exhibited in various solo and group shows in Europe. Her practice is concerned with the construction of stereotypes of race, nationality and gender, considering the motivation behind the perpetuation and the different forms in which they are manifested. We are consumers of myths and Whittle enjoys assuming the role of mythographer. These myths can act both as weapons and as protection, a support for dominant power structures and a means of control of identity.

“Myth is the act of draining history out of signs and reconstructing these signs instead as “instances”, in particular instances of universal truths or of natural law, things that have no history, no specific embeddedness, no history of contestation.Myth steals into the heart of the sign to convert the historical into the “natural” – something that is uncontested, that is simply “the way things are”.-Rosalind Krauss, Film Stills chapter, taken from Cindy Sherman 1975-1993

Her practice hopes to provoke the audience into making artistic judgements on taste. Thomas Hirshhorn’s discourse on how shrines, altars and arrangements of objects emerge, expand and erode has influenced her most recent installation. The assumptions made about kitsch, where it has to transfigure into something purer and less vulgar to be considered art is a source of fascination.

The installation, badmanabadman refers to living stereotypes of the black male body. Whittle mines images of bodybuilders, minstrelsy, religious iconography, hip-hop legends, historical figures and popular culture, to produce assemblages, which attempt to subvert gender and racial stereotypes. Whittle struggles to formulate a kind of hybrid collage strategy, through the acquisition of bits and pieces of visual information, striving to make sense of them. Her assemblages become a deliberate pastiche of glamour, through the manipulation of decorative excess. Through inverting the disposable, she hopes to make something precious. Artifice becomes a device to create myths, where the illusion of preciousness and luxury is manufactured with cheap, accessible materials, such as felt, styrofoam, mirrors and fake gems.

NAGC CONSERVATION PROGRAMME WORKING TO RESTORE THE MONTEFORE FOUNTAINThe National Art Galley Committee is pleased to announce the continuation of it's Conservation and Education programme with the visit of the Puerto Rican objects conservator  Mr. Angel Santiago-Torres. Mr. Santiago-Torres is currently restoring the Montefiore Fountain, a public monument dating back to 1864 and located opposite the Coleridge Street Library.

This fountain previously located at Beckwith Place and moved to its present location in 1940, was given to the city by John Montefiore as a memorial to his father, John Castello Montefiore who died from Cholera in 1854. This Monument is one of the many fine examples of unique Barbadian built heritage that can be found in  the area which has prompted the bid for the nomination of Bridgetown and the Garrison as a World Heritage Site.

The Ministry of Transport and Works and the National Conservation Commission are assisting with this important restoration activity.

RASHIDA BUTCHER‘My present body of work is developed around the female high heel shoe as a material and metaphorical object. The work consists of pencil and pen & ink drawings as well as sculptures

I am fortunate to have realized my passion and be able to live it every day of my life. This passion is my love for creating and observing art.For me art goes beyond skillful arrangement of formal elements. I see it as a vehicle to express my thoughts and ideas. I want my work to challenge and demand reactions from those who experience it.’

“Lolly Land” runs until April 10th.

Tonya Wiles - a Barbados Scholar - opens her second solo-exhibition on the island. After pursuing her Bachelor (Honours) Degree in Painting at the prestigious Wimbledon College of Art in London, Tonya now teaches art and lives in Barbados. She has hosted and participated in a number of exhibitions in the heart of the London and was noted by collectors as well as galleries for her skill and witty inventiveness. Tonya is excited by the prospect of making a contribution to the Barbados art scene with her intriguing, fresh and accessible work She painted a song as she flew through the sweet grass up to the candy-flossed sky. Her melody… “Wake up! Wake up! It’s time to rise and shine!”Colours rubbed their sleepy eyes. He peaked over the hills and they smiled at Him while skipping a joyful dance on the canvas. Their rhythm… “Thank you for coming again.” Boys and girls frolic through the orchard of lollies down below. Freshly baked cupcakes blossom from the trees. Today’s treats for yesterday’s play. Sitting in one large circle they frosted them with the sweetness of imagination. What a glorious day…By Tonya Wiles
