Summer at Last…and welcome to what will be my last season as Artistic Director. Over the 20 years that I’ve been here there has been a huge increase in the range of what we offer at the arts centre and in the number of people who come to see shows, look at exhibitions or take part in courses and workshops. I hope you agree that there are some great activities for everyone this season (and indeed all year round). So, get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Queen’s Hall Arts is in a relatively strong position with future agreements from our core funders Arts Council England and Northumberland County Council. With their support we are able to bring you the best of local, regional and national artists, support the emergence of exciting new talent and make the arts accessible to all the community. However, with public funding at standstill levels we rely on a range of trusts and donors to help us to continue growing and expanding our valuable work. So, feel free to make a donation when you buy a ticket or when you look round our free gallery spaces. Every pound you give makes a difference (and is doubled by Arts Council England’s Catalyst: Evolve programme) and helps ensure that we are here for the next 20 years, and beyond.

Queen’s Hall Film Club Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (15) Thursday 12 April 8.00pm

Directed by Paul McGuigan and based on the memoir of the same name by Peter Turner, it tells his story of falling for aging Hollywood actress Gloria Grahame in 1970s Liverpool, only to face reality when she is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Luke Daniels: Electrophon Thursday 12 April 8.00pm

In the White Room

Luke Daniels has worked as a soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and as a member

of the Riverdance band.

The ‘Electrophon’ combines traditional source material and new music technology, syncing step motion from the resonating steel comb

of a c1880 polyphon machine with digital and midi time code to create new instrumental music on 20” steel discs, with which Luke

plays along on guitar, melodeon and sings.

This young String Quartet has been very successful in competitions, leading to a busy year as Artists in Residence in Scotland. They are currently International Young Artists at the Royal Northern College where they are studying for a diploma in chamber music performance. Kitchen Zoo The Tin Foil Astronaut Friday 13 April 11.00am & 2.00pm

Today is the day of the space race! A race to put the first human on the Moon! But our astronaut isn’t quite like others... she’s different.

Alba has been in training and she has even made her own rocket! But can she really power a rocket with crisps? What is past Pluto? Are there robots in Space? And will anyone ever listen to the smallest of space explorers?

With original live music and puppets, this is a story of discovery, individuality and a celebration of differences for 3-7 year olds and their families.

A play, with songs, written and performed by Tayo Aluko, with live piano accompaniment.

“The British Empire was trying desperately to hold on to its colonial possessions by any means … and the foul would often override the fair.”

Nigerian Tunji Sowande quietly breaks through multiple barriers to become Britain’s first Black judge in 1978. Also a fine concert singer and keen cricket lover, he muses on international politics and history as they affect the Black world from Africa to the USA and Britain, from the point of view of one who would rather watch sports, and spread love and peace through the medium of song.

Recalling heroic sporting achievements alongside epoch-defining political events, Tayo Aluko follows the multi-award winning play Call Mr Robeson with another “brilliantly put together history lesson delivered as art.”

New Old Friends Crimes Under the Sun

Inspired by Agatha Christie, Hitchcock and film noir, you are invited on an hilarious but murderous trip to a classic English Riviera retreat.

A secluded island hotel just off the English coast becomes a crime scene, as a scandal-inducing femme-fatale is felled. All the guests on the island are suspects, but are they alone and is this the first crime this idyllic island has witnessed?

Award-winning theatre company New Old Friends present Crimes Under the Sun, a comedy thriller directed by James Farrell (Associate Director - The 39 Steps, West End). The show features four actors playing multiple outrageous characters, and a plot that romps along in the company’s trademark inventive style.

Reform Theatre Two By Jim Cartwright

From the award-winning writer of Little Voice and Road comes Two, a gritty yet heart-warming look at northern life filled with pathos and humour.

Set in a Northern Pub, the Landlord and Landlady’s cheery greeting and friendly banter barely disguise their contempt for each other. They met outside the pub when they were kids, had their first drink there, courted there, had their Twenty Firsts there, Wedding Reception there, and now they own the place.

During the course of the evening assorted customers pass through including a little boy left by his father, an event that triggers a move towards a fragile reconciliation between the pub couple as their secret tragedy, swallowed back for seven years, comes to a head after drinking-up time.

Steve Tilston & Jez Lowe Thursday 7 June 7.30pm

Described by Mike Harding as “two of our best songwriters and singers, understanding and enriching each other’s songs” and by Mark Radcliffe as a “top-class pair of songwriters”, two of the UK folk scene’s finest singer-songwriters join forces for a series of concerts filled with songs and music.

Jez Lowe received a double nomination in the 2015 BBC Folk Awards for Best Singer and Best New Song. He also tours with his band The Bad Pennies and with The Pitmen Poets, and is a principal writer on the award-winning BBC Radio Ballads.

Steve Tilston has been described as “a complete guitarist” and “a singer songwriter of rare talent”. He’s won a BBC Folk Award for Best Original Song, and is the inspiration for the Hollywood movie Danny Collins starring Al Pacino!

It’s all about getting the right body!

Flat-chested Connie seeks to achieve her dream of bust enhancement, whilst the wayward lusts and passions of the play’s over-the-top characters career around her.

A satirical and gorgeously vulgar merry-go-round, where Brighton’s plush, silk-stocking district of Hove runs headlong into the “permissive society” of the 1960s. A fast-moving pastiche of comic styles – Noel Coward painted as a cheeky seaside postcard - with a good dash of parody Mills & Boon thrown in. Alan Bennett’s trademark ear for dialogue goes into hyperactive mode for this play – don’t expect naturalism!

This amateur production of “Habeas Corpus” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD.

Set in the summer of 1919 during preparations for a ‘Peace Tea’ garden party, Hold Your Peace tells a thought provoking tale of the impact of the Great War (1914-1918) on the lives and loves of the residents of The Orchards and tells the untold stories of the lives of learning disabled people during the Great War. The horrendous loss of life was unprecedented and brought devastating changes to those at home and this, of course, included learning disabled people.

Headway Arts is a multi award-winning arts company based in Blyth, Northumberland, who since 1995 have made authentic, inspiring and meaningful work through their high quality inclusive working methods. This latest piece of entertaining original theatre puts learning disabled actors centre stage and is supported by Arts Council England and Queen’s Hall Arts.

Make a Play Summer School with Multi Story Theatre Monday 23 July – Friday 27 July 10.00am – 4.00pm daily

A fun filled week at the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre for 11-16 year olds to develop their theatre skills, culminating with a live performance in the main theatre. Professional actors from Multi Story Theatre Company will work with the group to create a prequel to their performance of Viking Tales.

Bob Dylan is well known as a cultural icon, singer, songwriter, musician and poet. Art was initially a way to pass time between concerts; he took it more seriously when recovering from a motorbike accident in the 1970s. His first public exhibition was in 2007.

SyndicArt is pleased to present a carefully curated selection of limited edition prints from three of his best collections – the Drawn Blank Series, the Brazil Series and the Beaten Path.

This spring, The Biscuit Factory, the UK’s largest art, craft and design gallery located in Newcastle, will be supporting Hexham Book Festival, and working with Queen’s Hall Arts, with a special pop-up exhibition. The Queen’s Hall Digital platform www.queenshalldigital.com has an ongoing commission programme via a mix of selected works and open calls providing an exciting opportunity for us to get to know what artists are making and stimulating interesting discussions and new opportunities.

This exhibition is an offline selection of what has been shown on the platform to date and includes a mix of work by regional and national artists. The online platform has been a great way to share this work and the work of the Queens Hall Digital programme across the more rural parts of Northumberland (and the rest of the world). But, we are taking this opportunity to celebrate these works in the gallery space to create a shared viewing experience.

Tynedale Sounds Society will be a creative, participatory, public programme and exhibition designed as a sonic celebration and experiential interpretation of

Tynedale’s contemporary aural environment and sound heritage.

The programme and exhibition will be a mix of public and community engagement activity that involves collecting, listening, skill sharing, distribution and promotion of creative sonic practices and experiences of the Tynedale area of South West Northumberland.

Tynedale Sounds Society will be led by producer, record label owner (Signals), broadcaster and DJ Michael McHugh.
