News from our Vicar,
The Rev. Grayce O’Neill Rowe Christ is risen; the Lord is risen indeed! And so
we begin the Easter Season, a time of resurrection, a
time marked by the gift of new life.
As we enter into this season, we, at St. Thomas,
will find ourselves entering into a new way of being
church. As your Vicar, I will be changing my schedule to
two Sundays per month and Deirdre, your Deacon, will
be taking on more responsibility and officiating at two
Sunday services with Reserved Sacrament. We hope to
have the Rev. Gabe Sinisi as supply celebrant for those
months with five Sundays. (We have decided on our
schedule for the remainder of the year and it is printed
after this article.)
Deirdre will be taking on the position of Pastoral
Care Administrator. She will use her excellent gifts in
offering pastoral care for you in addition to working with
our Eucharistic Visitors, Acolytes and Altar Servers,
Worship Committee, Bible Study, outreach opportunities
and other duties as they arise. As a Deacon, Deirdre
cannot consecrate the bread and wine nor can she
pronounce absolution after confession or the blessing at
the end of the service. With that in mind, we have
prepared a liturgy for the Sundays when I am not here.
7
Deirdre will preach and she will offer Holy Communion
from the Reserved Sacrament.
Even though I won’t be here every week, I will
continue to be your Vicar. That means that I am only a
phone call/email away and if there is a pastoral
emergency both Deirdre and I will work to see that your
needs are met.
I am excited about this opportunity to enter into
a new way of being church. I do believe that God will
continue to richly bless us as we live out these days of
new life.
Easter blessings to you!

News from our Deacon,
The Rev. Deirdre Moulinier What Does a Deacon Do? In March we had an Acolyte Training Session after church one Sunday. There wasn’t much training as all the acolytes have lots of experience and continue to teach me the nuances of being an Acolyte at St. Thomas. The real purpose of the Acolyte Ministry gathering was twofold. The first reason was this: every Priest and Worship Leader is different and want the acolytes to do things “their way”. Acolytes who join the ministry often learn to do things according to whomever the Priest, Deacon or Worship Leader is at the time. An Acolyte who joins the ministry ten years later, serving under another leader may learn things much differently. Second, as your Deacon, my job is to lead the Worship Team and make sure that everyone is on the same page. This is one of many things that Deacons are assigned and expected to do when a Bishop assigns him or her to a parish.
Some other duties that a Deacon performs are:
· Making home or hospital visits and carrying pre-consecrated elements to those people if requested. · Training (if necessary) Eucharistic Visitors (EVs) and scheduling EV visits to those who are homebound or hospitalized. · Acting as a bridge to the community by bringing the needs of the community to the congregation and the needs of the congregation to the community.
10
· Setting the table at the Holy Eucharist, reading the gospel and dismissing the congregation. · I am able to perform final unction to the dying and with the Bishop’s permission, I may perform weddings and funerals. Only a Priest may consecrate the elements and give the blessing at these functions. · Being a listening presence in times of trouble or joy.
If you are interested in the nuts and bolts of a Deacon’s Job you may ask me or our Parish Administrator, Shirley, for a copy of the Deacon’s Handbook. Yes, there is such a thing! If you are interested in what it takes to become a Deacon, or if you feel that you are being called to ministry, please come see me! I would love to talk with you about it. I am available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at St. Thomas or by phone anytime.
Senior Warden’s Corner with
Barbara Evans Since the last Newsletter, so much has happened
at St. Thomas.
First and foremost, we now have a new Deacon.
The Rev. Deirdre Moulinier has joined our staff and we
are so pleased to have her with us. She has joined Rev.
Grayce at the Altar and will be leading us on alternate
Sundays in Holy Communion. Rev. Deirdre is also at the
church two or three days a week working in her new
office. Again, we are so very happy to have her here!
11
We are also very pleased that Rev. Grayce will be
extending her time with us. Although she will be here
fewer days, she will remain as our Vicar, conducting
services two Sundays a month and in her office on one
Thursday a month. Rev. Grayce will continue to lead our
Bishop’s Committee and she and Rev. Deirdre will keep
St. Thomas spiritually and religiously alive.
We recently lost a longtime and dear
parishioner, Sheila Boyle, when she decided to move to
Knoxville, TN to be closer to her family. However, she
plans to come back to Clarkdale to visit us.
*A note from Sheila and her current contact
information can be found on page 19 of this Newsletter.
The Bishop’s Committee gained two new
members. Jim Moeny and Tim Flannery joined our
ranks. A big welcome to both of them!
Our Bishop’s Committee, with the help of
Shirley, our Parish Administrator, has started something
new and something very nice. We are sending out Happy
Birthday cards and Happy Anniversary cards to our
parishioners to honor their special day. It is just a nice
way to remind them that we care about them.
*If you did not receive a card on either your birthday
or anniversary, it is because the office does not have a record
of your special day. Please call the office and let Shirley know
and please confirm that we have a record of your current
address.
Oh yes, the Food Pantry! What a joy it is to see
the thankfulness of the people who partake of the food
we have available. You cannot believe how good it feels
to be a part of this important outreach ministry. Please
come if you are able and be a part of our Food Bank.
Please keep the food donations coming, we need them.
I was privileged recently, to attend a Bishop’s
Search Group meeting. Lee Worthen and I went to
Flagstaff’s Church of the Epiphany for a group meeting
of parishioners from Northern Arizona churches. We
12
took part in discussions of what we would like to see in
the new Bishop of Arizona. It was interesting to hear all
the different particular things people wanted. As this is
an ongoing process, we just have to wait and see.
I also attended a Lay Leadership Retreat at
Chapel Rock in Prescott. I enjoyed being with other lay
church leaders from around Arizona. It was a pleasure
sharing with them and learning new things from them
that can aid our church in becoming more involved in
our community.
Another big news item since the last Newsletter
is the new floor in the Parish Hall kitchen, hallways and
bathrooms. Thank you all for helping to make this
happen! We couldn’t have done it without all of you.
Once again, when a need arises, the people of St. Thomas
came through to help!
I am involved with the MOST LOST Event
Planning Committee and am looking forward to the April
in Paris night, complete with dinner, dessert, and drinks.
The artsy atmosphere will make you feel like you’re in
Paris at a lovely and charming café. Please come join us.
Everyone is welcome! There are sign-up sheets in Parish
Hall.
The Lenten Services and Soup Suppers were well
attended. We listened to four segments of how
Christianity should be defined as a way of life based on
love rather than on just a system of beliefs. We enjoyed
delicious soups and lively discussions and we missed
those of you who did not attend. We are thinking that
one reason many of you did not attend is because you
might not feel comfortable getting out and driving at
night. So, we are thinking that perhaps next year we
should do Lenten services at noon and have soup
lunches instead of soup suppers. I hope this plan sounds
as good to you as it does to me. So, see you at the Lenten
Soup Lunches next year then!
13
Once again, it is a joy to serve as your Senior
Warden and to be involved in the happenings at St.
Thomas.
News from our Junior Warden,
Jim Gemmill The food pantry has been going very well.
Faithful volunteers have served many meals to those in
need in Clarkdale and other communities. Since we
began in January, we have provided food to almost 210
families which comprised almost 784 people including
giving our extras to the Yavapai/Apache Senior Center in
Clarkdale.
Our original plan was to have the pantry open
each week but the cost and effort involved has led to a
new schedule. Beginning in April we will be open on the
2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. This will insure a
continued, good supply of food.
Our faithful volunteers show up every time they
are needed. Unloading the truck and setting things up
takes about an hour. We open at 2:00 and around 3:45,
we begin to slow down and clean up.
Our pantry helpers are: Barbara Evans, Jenny
Schauffler, Lee Worthen, Paul Coffey, Carolyn Van Sant,
Carol Cain, Martha Childers, Connie Griffin, Greg Noyes,
Candy Gemmill, John and Isabel Erickson, Marilyn and
John Shreve, Ruth Wicks, and Jim and Dinah Gemmill.
St. Thomas, you are serving our community well. Thank
you all for your continued support.

A Word from our Treasurer,
Lee Worthen THANK YOU!!! For your continued support of Christ’s call to St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church of Clarkdale. For our worship together, fellowship, spiritual growth, service to each other and those around us. For your offerings of time, God-given talents, and treasure. For your help in all that we do at St. Thomas’; together, we are transforming the lives of many that surround us and our Food Pantry stands as a testament of our giving and faithfulness as people of God, called to be: caring and sharing, gracious and generous, compassionate and loving. For your faithful investment in the work of the Lord through St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church of Clarkdale. In His Grace, Lee Worthen , Treasurer
ECW Happenings from
Barbara Evans, ECW Chair Our raffle for the BBQ and BBQ Utensil set, as
you are all aware, has begun. A flyer and raffle tickets
have been distributed to many parishioners so they can
sell tickets to their friends and neighbors. Anyone that
does not have tickets and would like some to sell, please
come see me, Barbara Evans. Tickets are always
16
available for purchase in the Parish Hall during coffee
hour on Sundays.
The proceeds from this raffle will go to replenish
the ECW bank account. Our funds are getting slim
because we are responsible for purchasing all of the
cleaning supplies and coffee hour supplies. We also
purchase supplies for funerals, potlucks, and items
needed for all other events. This need will continue so it
is imperative that the funds continue. So, please help by
selling tickets. It is a great prize!
The ECW gals are also involved in the planning
and production of the April in Paris event. There are
many jobs to make this happen and we can always use
your help. Please talk to Alexa, the chairperson of MOST
LOST, about what you can do to help.
Twice Blessed Thrift Store News from
Store Manager, Barbara Evans As usual, our Thrift Store continues to be open
on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 3pm and
on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 2pm. These
hours seem to work best for our customers. We also
continue to have a vast array of things to sell. Everyone
has been very generous with donations.
If you haven’t been in to browse and shop, you
might want to come by. We always have a few new items
and you might see something that you’ve been looking
for or something you just want to have.
If you want to take a look on Sundays, please do
so. The door will be unlocked and your money can be left
on the counter. We trust you!
Remember, the money goes into the church
general fund. Shopping is such an easy way to help
support our church!

A Brief note from your Parish
Administrator, Shirley R. Pogany As most of you know by now, my mother, Linda
L. Pogany, passed away on February 10, 2018. The
outpouring of concern, support, prayers, cards and love
from all of you at St. Thomas overwhelms my heart and
comforts me. Some of you attended the memorial for my
mother and my family and I were honored by your
presence. How truly special all of you are!
From my family and especially from me, thank
you for your kindness, thoughtfulness and love.
Good Food for Good Causes
by Alexa Hokanson Good Food for Good Causes (GFFGCP) is an
adult giving circle not religious in nature. It meets bi-
annually for socializing, sharing food and wine and
funding good deeds. Each attendee brings potluck food
and also a check or cash for $35 which is collectively
donated to Cottonwood Middle School (CMS) Elective
Classes. St Thomas provides the kitchen/dining venue
and their existing 501c3 which is responsible for
forwarding of all funds collected. Plates, cups, napkins,
flatware and ice tea are provided. For more information:
928-634-8593 or [email protected]
Funds raised from the last potluck held in the
fall of 2017 were distributed under the guidance of CMS
Principal Matthew Schumacher. Three electives
receiving funds included photography/year book,
culinary and the conversion of a classroom into Tool
Time. Tool Time students are working with their teacher
Frank Marston to restore impounded bicycles donated
by the Cottonwood Police Department for redistribution
to the community. GFFGCP chose CMS understanding
18
that elective courses often help to keep students better
interested in their general studies.
Representatives of the group recently toured the
school to see how their funds were being used. CMS
photography students documented the visit.

News from Sheila Boyle I've moved to Tennessee! As difficult as it was to leave Arizona and all my wonderful friends and my great life there, I decided it was time to be with family again since Bill passed and I was lonely. I now live with my daughter, Diana, and her family in Knoxville, TN. Quite a change! I miss seeing the sun every day, but I do love the greenery and water close by. I have my own room, as big as a garage, (Sheila’s Hideaway is the sign above the door) and lots of dogs to trip over and love with a puppy on the way. I am now a member of the Y and signed up for training and classes. In no time I will probably be busier than ever and am loving having someone to say Good Morning to again. If any of you ever come my way you are more than welcome to stay here (if you like dogs!) and I will be coming back to Cottonwood Ranch in the next six months or so to be with all my friends again and to see my sister and nieces and nephews in Phoenix, my cousins in Prescott and my church family, writing buddies and all of you who are so dear to me. Cell phone number is the same: 928-202-1023 Email is the same: [email protected] My new address is: 604 Mountain Pass Lane Knoxville, TN 37923 Love to you all, enjoy every day, and stay well. Sheila
