Offerings for our St. Vincent de Paul Societies to help neighbors in need
The Church’s documents on Holy Thursday direct us to add food for those in need to the procession when we bring the bread and wine forward at Holy Thursday Mass. Our Collaborative Triduum Planning Committee has invited our St. Vincent de Paul societies from each parish to be present during the preparation rite with baskets, and we will all be invited to process forward with our gifts of food. Our societies will divide up the food for the SVDP pantries of each parish. All non-perishable food items are welcome.

A Brief History of the Mass
Disastrous Division—and Catholic Reform Fr. Michael J. Harkins
T o borrow a famous quotation, for the Catholic Church the years of the Renaissance were “the best of times . . . the worst of times.”
Some of the most sublime Church music was composed, religious art and architecture (especially in St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel) were produced. On the other hand, thanks to land gifts over time to the papacy, popes became temporal as well as spiritual rulers (sometimes more temporal than spiritual), some popes were far from paragons of virtue, and in many cases clergy were poorly educated.
Abuses of sound Catholic practices resulted in widespread unorthodox practices and at times belief, sometimes egregious, on the part of laity and also at times poor education of some clergy.
There can be no doubt that from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance, the widespread perception of Catholic teaching and cer-tainly its practice left much to be desired.
Only with the rejection of both legitimate and correct Catholic teaching, along with its illegitimate practices, did the assault on the Catholic Church, known as the Protestant Refor-mation, come to fruition. It must be mentioned that, although the Reformation focuses on theological matters, it was nonetheless also political. At this time the modern European nations were at least coalescing, and the pope, temporal ruler of a broad swath of the central Italian peninsula known as the Papal States, was no less a political power than other heads of state whether Catholic or Protestant.
The Protestant Reformation set off a severe divide within Christianity and Christendom in western Europe. Catholics and Protestants mutually condemned one another and something like the Berlin Wall existed between them. In the United States, the 13 colonies, save Maryland, which was founded by Protestants, even beyond the 19th century oppressed Roman Catholics, the “papists.”
The aftermath of the Protestant Reformation was the Catholic Counter-Reformation, a definitive effort by the Catholic Church to reform herself by rooting out abuses, defending legitimate doctrine and practice, and educating the clergy.
The Council of Trent (1545 and 1563) was the 19th ecumenical council of the Catholic Church and was called by Pope Paul III. The Council issued condemna-tions of what were to be the heresies of Protestantism, and also issued reaffirma-tions and clarifications of the Church's doctrine and teachings, including scrip-ture, Sacred Scripture, Sa-cred Tradition, original sin, justification, salvation, the sacraments, the Mass and the veneration of saints. It also required the establish-ment of seminaries for the proper education of clergy. The consequences of the Council were also signifi-cant in regards to the
Church's liturgy and practices. Pope Pius V then issued revisions of the Breviary and Missal. These, in turn, led to the codification of the Mass which remained the Church's primary form of the Mass for the next four hundred years.

Growing up on the edge of poverty, Hector wrestled with homelessness, and was struggling to find food. While playing basketball in a local Church league, he met Fr. Paul O’Brien, who encouraged him to go to college.
Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond. With his help and guidance, Hector went on to play basketball for Regis College, graduate, and now works as a school counselor to give back to students the same hope and inspiration he received. Like Fr. Paul, our senior priests in good standing have been helping others for decades.
As we celebrate this Easter with our families and friends, please remember the Boston priests who have helped us along our life journey and consider making a gift of thanks to the special Easter collection for their health and retirement needs.
Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.
