Dear Parishioners,

The news last Sunday about our “stay at home” orders being extended until the end of April has made us all stop and wonder, what's next? Events keep changing and we can easily get ahead of ourselves which does us or others no service. I'm not sure about you, but I've tried to stay the course with the basics as much as possible knowing that these are not normal times. I'm praying each morning at mass for your intentions and those of the whole world. I take time for a good breakfast and lunch with an afternoon break for some kind of exercise. In the rectory we have made time to eat dinner together more often, which is more easily accomplished since we are not running in five directions as much. In the evening, I limit my news and TV time, trying instead to call family and friends, read a novel, or do some drawing with charcoal or color pencil.

How are you holding up? I encourage you to keep some sort of routine. Make time for prayer, keep in touch and be easy on yourself. Self care is so important when you're under stress. Perhaps now more than ever we all should reflect on the question: “What is the key to happiness?” Many things are good and necessary for a solid foundation for lasting health but psychologists remind us that Practicing Happiness can also make a significant difference in how we look at things. Laura Sullivan Hill writes in Loyola, The Magazine of

Loyola University of Chicago about the “The Art of

Happiness.”

“Health and happiness go hand-in-hand – but achieving true joy requires a commitment to training the mind and spirit.”

Hill quotes Fred Bryant, a long time psychology professor at Loyola, “How do people transform a positive moment into something wonderful that they feel? Happiness is not in the events, it is in us. The most wonderful thing has no effect on us until we transform it in our own minds and the way we react to it.”

Fred Bryant recommends five tips for savoring:

1. Notice what's around you. Take a mental photograph so that you can revisit the experience. 2. Share experiences with others. They can often point out things you have overlooked. 3. Enjoy experiences as they are, rather than thinking

about what should have been. 4. Make time to savor. We can't savor while answering emails or doing laundry. 5. Don't wait for something good to happen. Look at what is already in your life and find something to savor, whether it is an everyday occurrence or a major milestone.

Bryant gives the example of savoring his relationship with his two-year-old granddaughter. “We pay more attention to the hassles and the problems in our lives, and are more fond of counting woes and worries than our joys and blessings, but the data shows that there are actually more good things than bad,” he said. “We need to pay more attention to the good by savoring.”

As we approach Holy Week we recognize that our faith gives us the grace to deal with whatever comes our way. Our God is merciful and forgiving. We need not fear!

I invite you to take a little time “savoring” and paying more attention to your loved ones near and far. Pray for them and all who are working in the hospitals and for all first responders. Our hope is fueled by our belief in Christ who is our “Resurrection and our Life” today and forever.

Perhaps you could write a note to a loved one or start a journal, writing your thoughts and memories? All of this will help you take time to notice, focus on, and appreciate the positive experiences of your life!

Wydarzenia ciągle się zmieniają co powoduje niepewność i brak możliwości służenia sobie nawzajem. Nie jestem pewien jak Wy, ale ja starałem się trzymać kursu tak dobrze, jak to możliwe, wiedząc, że to nie są normalne czasy. Modlę się każdego ranka na Mszy w Waszych intencjach i intencjach całego świata. Mam czas na dobre śniadanie i lunch z popołudniową przerwą na jakieś ćwiczenia. At The Procession With Palms (AMT 21:1-11) When Jesus and the disciples drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them here to me. And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, ‘The master has need of them.’ Then he will send them at once.” This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: Say to daughter Zion, “Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them. They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them. The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is the he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, “Who is this?” And the crowds replied, “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee.”

First Reading (IS 50:4-7)

The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me,

my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.

Reflection on the First Reading

Our first reading, from the prophet Isaiah, presents a familiar theme from the Christian life: that of the suffering servant. The prophet makes clear his suffering: “I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.” Very importantly, though, this suffering is ultimately redemptive: “the Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced…” Whenever I read passages like this in the scriptures, I think of Jesus’ exhortation to the disciples in the Gospel of Mark where he says: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me…What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” The message, I think, ultimately, of both of these passages is that following Jesus is going to require sacrifice and suffering and that it is easy to give up along the way but that giving up and yielding to temptation and the easier path is ultimately a source of much more suffering. Some of you, I am sure, have seen the movie A Man for All Seasons, which chronicles the story of St. Thomas More in sixteenth century England. The movie starts with St. Thomas holding a high position in the court of King Henry VIII and the other main character, Richard Rich, holding a low position and wanting only to move up. As the movie progresses, because of his refusal to go against his conscience, St. Thomas’ fortunes get gradually reduced and Richard’s, because he’s is willing to do anything to get ahead, go the other way, so much so that at the end of the movie the roles are completely the reverse of the beginning. St. Thomas is eventually executed for treason and Richard Rich becomes roughly the Prime Minister of England and dies in his bed. Today, though, the roles are reversed again: St. Thomas is venerated and Richard Rich is a forgotten nonentity. Discipleship costs something but “since the Lord God is my help, I am not disgraced.”

Refleksja na podstawie 1 czytania

Nasze pierwsze czytanie z księgi proroka Izajasza przedstawia znajomy temat z życia chrześcijańskiego - temat cierpiącego sługi. Prorok jasno wyraża się o swoim cierpieniu: “Podałem grzbiet mój bijącym i policzki moje rwącym mi brodę. Nie zasłoniłem mej twarzy przed zniewagami i opluciem.” Co jednak jest niezwykle ważne to fakt, że to cierpienie jest ostatecznie zbawcze:”Pan Bóg mnie wspomaga, dlatego wstydu nie doznam”. Kiedykolwiek czytam ten fragment Pisma Świętego, myślę o mowie Jezusa do uczniów którą wygłasza w Ewangelii według św. Marka: “ktokolwiek chce być moim uczniem musi zaprzeć się samego siebie, musi wziąć swój krzyż i mnie naśladować… Cóż człowiek zyska kiedy zdobędzie cały świat a zaprzepaści swoją duszę?”. Ostateczne przesłanie obu fragmentów jest to iż naśladowanie Jezusa wiąże się z ofiarą i cierpieniem. Wydaje się że z tego powodu łatwiej jest porzucić drogę pójścia za Jezusem, ale w rzeczywistości pójście łatwiejszą drogą pokus ostatecznie wiedzie do jeszcze większego cierpienia. Niektórzy z was być może widzieli film “A Man of All Seasons”, który opowiada historię św. Tomasza More mającą miejsce w szesnastowiecznej Anglii. Film zaczyna się wprowadzając postać św. Tomasza który piastuje wysoką rolę na dworze króla Henryka VIII oraz postać Ryszarda Richa, który ma niską pozycję społeczną i jest przepełniony żądzą władzy. Podczas rozwijania się fabuły filmu, Tomasza stopniowo traci swoje znaczenie na dworze królewskim, jako konsekwencja jego sprzeciwu wobec króla, podczas gdy Ryszard idzie na wszelki kompromis i pnie się na coraz wyższe szczeble kariery. Pod koniec filmu role się odwracają -Tomasz jest na dnie znaczenia

społecznego, a Ryszard - na szczycie. Tomasz ostatecznie został stracony za zdradę stanu a Ryszard Rich stał się prawą ręką króla w Anglii i zmarł we własnym łożu. Dzisiaj jednak, wieki po tych wydarzeniach, ocenę tych postaci mamy odwrotną - św. Tomasza uznajemy za wzór do naśladowania, podczas gdy postać Ryszarda Richa jest prawie kompletnie zapomniana. Naśladowanie Chrystusa kosztuje wiele, ale możemy być pewni, że ”Pan Bóg mnie wspomaga, dlatego wstydu nie doznam”.

Second Reading (Phil 2:6-11) Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Reflection on the Second Reading

During this “stay-at-home” period with less shopping for groceries, I find at times that the rectory “food supply chain” is disrupted! For example, in the morning the Corn Flakes box has only a quarter of a cup left, mostly dust. The gallon of milk has only a quarter inch in it, and the carton of two dozen eggs has only ONE egg left! Everything is empty or near empty!

Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a little – we do have three Heinz Tomato Ketchup bottles, two squeeze bottles of yellow mustard, and a unlimited supply of extra-hot horseradish! Plus one “carry out” container stacked onto another with green stuff growing – seedlings?

On Palm Sunday 2020, we are asked in this reading by St. Paul (Philippians 2:6-11) to follow Christ who “emptied” himself of the trappings of security, power, and control. In today's Passion narrative of St. Matthew, we witness Jesus suffering rejection by His friends, being publicly mocked, tortured, and dying an excruciating death on the cross.

For most of us at SJB, but certainly not all, we find ourselves before this pandemic “full” or at least somewhat comfortable in our daily needs and wants. Now listen to me, I want to be careful not to make you feel guilty for the blessings you perhaps enjoyed, but at a time like this I have come to reflect on this reading and my daily life in a more profound way as I'm sure you have. In our “social distancing” I feel that I've become closer, at least emotionally and spiritually, to the stranger, those who are sick and alone, as well as my family and friends.

Jesus invites us to journey with him this Holy Week and pray that paradoxically when we are weak we are strong in compassion and hope. Our “self-emptying” becomes not an obstacle to love and sacrificial service but rather fills us up to witness his courage and mercy to all.

For me I look at things much differently and I pray that when the “all clear” is sounded I won't forget this life-long lesson. I hope that Lent 2020 will be remembered as a time of radical conversion. With prayers during Holy Week, Fr. Mike Meany

Refleksja na podstawie drugiego czytania

Podczas okresu “zostania w domu”, gdzie czas zakupów został ograniczony, zauważyłem że dotychczasowy proces zaopatrywania naszej plebanii w jedzenie został zakłócony! Dla przykładu, tego poranka w pudełku płatków śniadaniowych Corn Flakes została jedynie ćwiartka

opakowania, w dodatku zmielona na pył. Galon mleka ma jedynie szklankę lub dwie mleka, a z dwóch tuzinów jajek zostało JEDNO jajko! Wszystko jest wyczerpane albo prawie puste. Cóż, może trochę przesadziłem - mamy jeszcze trzy butelki ketchupu Heinz, dwa opakowania musztardy, i nieskończone zapasy extra pikantnego chrzanu! No i oczywiście jedno opakowanie na wynos pełne rosnącej zielenizny - może sadzonka?

W tę Niedzielę Palmową 2020, zaproszeni jesteśmy do lektury listu św. Pawła do Filipian (Fil. 2:6-11) i do naśladowania Chrystusa który “ogołocił się” z pokusy bezpieczeństwa, siły, i kontroli. W dzisiejszym opisie Pasji według św. Mateusza, widzimy Jezusa cierpiącego odrzucenie przez swoich przyjaciół, publiczne wyszydzenie, torturę, i umieranie w męczarni ukrzyżowania.

Większość z nas w naszej parafii, ale z pewnością nie wszyscy, przed obecną pandemią czuło się “wypełnionymi” albo przynajmniej komfortowo w zaspokojeniu codziennych potrzeb. Nie piszę tego aby wprowadzić nas w niepotrzebne poczucie winy, ale obecna sytuacja skłania mnie i ciebie to głębszej refleksji nad naszą codziennością. W obecnym czasie “dystansu społecznego” poczułem się bliższy, przynamniej na poziomie emocjonalnym i duchowym, z obcymi, chorymi i samotnymi, jak również z moją rodziną i przyjaciółmi.

Jezus zaprasza nas do drogi z Nim przez Wielki Tydzień i do modlitwy abyśmy momentach słabości odnajdowali współczucie i nadzieję. Nasze “ogołocenie” staje się nie przeszkodą dla miłości i służby ale raczej motorem pobudzającym nas do świadczenia o odwadze i miłosierdziu dla innych. Obecna sytuacja pozwoliła mi patrzeć na rzeczywistość z innej perspektywy i mam nadzieję że gdy powrót do normalności nastanie nie zapomnę tej życiowej nauki. Mam nadzieję że Wielki Post 2020 będzie zapamiętany jako czas radykalnego nawrócenia.

He said to Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, “My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!” Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open. He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again. Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand.” While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd, with swords and clubs, who had come from the chief priests and the elders of the people. His betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying, “The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him.” Immediately he went over to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and he kissed him. and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels? But then how would the Scriptures be fulfilled which say that it must come to pass in this way?” At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me. But all this has come to pass that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled. Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Peter was following him at a distance as far as the high priest’s courtyard, and going inside he sat down with the servants to see the outcome. The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward who stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild it.’” The high priest rose and addressed him, “Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?” But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “You have said so. But I tell you: From now on you will see ‘the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power’ and ‘coming on the clouds of heaven.’” Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need have we of witnesses? You have now heard the blasphemy; what is your opinion?” They said in reply, “He deserves to die!” Then they spat in his face and struck him, while some slapped him, saying,

“Prophesy for us, Christ: who is it that struck you?” Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. Look to it yourself.” Flinging the money into the temple, he departed and went off and hanged himself. The chief priests gathered up the money, but said, “It is not lawful to deposit this in the temple treasury, for it is the price of blood.” After consultation, they used it to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why that field even today is called the Field of Blood. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of a man with a price on his head, a price set by some of the Israelites, and they paid it out for the potter’s field just as the Lord had commanded me. Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?” But he did not answer him one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed. Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, “Which one do you want me to release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus called Christ?” For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over. While he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him.” The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus. The governor said to them in reply, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They answered, ABarabbas!” Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” But he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” They only shouted the louder, “Let him be crucified!” When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. They spat upon him and took the reed and kept striking him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him off to crucify him. As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross. So he is the king of Israel! Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now if he wants him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” The revolutionaries who were crucified with him also kept abusing him in the same way. From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And about three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Some of the bystanders who heard it said, “This one is calling for Elijah.” Immediately one of them ran to get a sponge; he soaked it in wine, and putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink. But the rest said, “Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save him.” But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. And behold, the veil of the sanctuary

was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they said, “ATruly, this was the Son of God!” There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him. Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who was himself a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be handed over. Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen and laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the tomb and departed. But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained sitting there, facing the tomb. Reflection for the Gospel (Mt 26,14 - 27,66)

The judge has pronounced a just sentence. The trial was conducted very smoothly. All the extenuating circumstances were taken into account, but the guilt of the prosecuted was undeniable. According to the law, which guards the order of the society, there was only one punishment for this crime at hand - the capital punishment. The convicted understood himself, that this verdict is fair. The punishment was the logical consequence of the life he lived. The prisoner was led to his cell. He was waiting for execution, and every sound of opening the cell doors felt like it was the last one in his life. Days were passing in an excruciating tension, turning every hour into a nightmare. This awaiting for death sentence was interrupted one day by the visit of the judge himself. He approached the prisoner and unexpectedly said - let’s exchange our clothes, take mine and leave prison. He continued: “Go back home free, but don’t go back to the way of crime. Today your execution is happening, but I want to take your place. I couldn’t save you by the means of the law. However, I want you to live, and that’s the only means I can save you. Maybe some day you will be able to willingly save someone from death and to give a second chance. Now you don’t have to be afraid of anyone. You can even stay close to the execution, watching under disguise of my clothes. You will see, what was waiting for you, how the just sentence for your actions looks like.”

The prisoner exchanged his clothes without saying anything. He sheepishly shook the judge’s hand, who was sitting in his cell waiting for guards to take him for execution. The prisoner left the cell, passed through the gates unnoticed and enter the streets. He was free. Instead of the phantom of death he could see the perspective of life. But he still was dumbfounded by the willing sacrifice of the judge. He came back home. He knew, that at the same time he has experience justice and mercy. He knew, that the judge did not have any other choice. By adhering to justice he imposed the right punishment. But by being merciful, he paid for prisoner with his own life. The sentence was executed on him, not on the convict. We are entering into the mystery of the Holy Week. Willing to experience to the fullest the drama of Palm Sunday and Good Friday, we should take the perspective of the Condemned One. Jesus as the just judge pronounced the just death sentence on humanity, but out of love he took our place in experiencing that punishment. The sentence was executed on Him, not on us.

Palm Sunday and Good Friday are days of particular thanksgiving for the freedom granted to us by Jesus, the thanksgiving for Love of Jesus that saved us. This gratitude we should manifest through giving respect to the Cross, that bear the One who saved us all.

Refleksja na podstawie Ewangelii (Mt. 26,14 - 27,66)

Sędzia wydał sprawiedliwy wyrok. Przewód był przeprowadzony bez zarzutu. Uwzględniono wszystkie okoliczności łagodzące, ale wina była całkowicie po stronie oskarżonego. Na mocy prawa, stojącego na straży porządku i ładu w społeczeństwie, za dokonanie przestępstwa oskarżony miał otrzymać najwyższy wyrok - karę śmierci. Sam w czasie przewodu zrozumiał, że nikt nie wyrządza my krzywdy. Wyrok jest logiczną konsekwencją jego życia.

Więźnia odprowadzono do celi śmierci. Czekał na wykonanie wyroku. Każde otwarcie celi mogło być ostatnim. Upływały dni w napięciu. Życie z perspektywą bliskiej śmierci było koszmarne. Wyczekiwanie na wykonanie wyroku niespodziewanie przerwała wizyta Sędziego. Podszedł do więźnia i powiedział krótko - zamieńmy się ubraniami, wkładaj moje i wychodź z więzienia. Mówił:

“Wracaj do wolności, tylko nie wracaj już na drogę przestępstwa. Dziś wykonają na tobie wyrok. Powieszą mnie zamiast ciebie. Nie udało mi się obronić ciebie na podstawie prawa. Chcę jednak byś żył, więc mogę uczynić dla ciebie tylko tyle. Może kiedyś ty też zdecydujesz nie dobrowolnie na ratowanie kogoś od śmierci, by dać możliwość rehabilitacji. Obecnie nie musisz się nikogo obawiać. Możesz nawet, w moim stroju, być blisko w czasie egzekucji. Zobaczysz, co cię czekało, jak wygląda sprawiedliwy wyrok za zło, które jest twoim dziełem.” Skazaniec bez słowa zamienił ubrania. Nieśmiało uścisnął rękę Sędziego, który siedział na jego pryczy jako skazaniec i czekał na wykonanie wyroku. Przekroczył próg celi, wyszedł przez bramy więzienia na ulicę. Był wolny. Zamiast widma śmierci zobaczył perspektywę życia. Nie mógł tylko pojąć, dlaczego Sędzie to uczynił.

Wracał do domu. Wiedział, że doświadczył równocześnie sprawiedliwości i miłosierdzia. Wiedział również, że sprawiedliwy Sędzia nie miał innego rozwiązania. Jeśli chciał zachować sprawiedliwość musiał wydać wyrok śmierci. Będąc zaś miłosiernym, zapłacił za skazańca własnym życiem.

Wchodzimy w tajemnicę Wielkiego Tygodnia. Chcąc przeżyć w pełni dramat Niedzieli Palmowej i Wielkiego Piątku, musimy się odnaleźć w tym skazańcu. Jezus jako Sędzia sprawiedliwy wydał na nas wyrok śmierci, ale z miłości do nas dniu wykonania wyroku zajął nasze miejsce. Wyrok został wykonany na Nim, a nie na nas. Niedziela Palmowa i Wielki Piątek to dni szczególnego dziękczynienia za wolność jaką obdarzył nas Jezus, to dziękczynienia za Miłość, którą nas zbawił. Tę wdzięczność powinniśmy objawić oddając cześć Krzyżowi, na którym zawiło nasze Zbawienie.

SJB WOMAN OF THE YEAR LUNCHEON

POSTPONED Because of the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus in making plans, our Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) Vicariate II Woman of the Year Luncheon has been postponed from Saturday, May 9, to a date some time in the autumn. We are working with Chateau Ritz on this issue. Joan Czerlanis is our SJB Woman of the Year, and she deserves to be honored. Hopefully she will be able to crown Mary on May 3 if Masses resume in time, and we will see her in the Niles July 4 Parade. We will keep our parishioners informed about a future date for our luncheon recognizing Joan and the Women of the Year from our sister parishes in Vicariate II. ACCW SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE EXTENDED The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) $1,000 scholarship for a high school senior girl deadline for applications has been extended to April 30. ACCW receives applications from all over the Archdiocese and usually has close to 100 to consider. his year, however, only ten have been received so far. If you are a high school senior girl planning to attend a college/university (or if you know of one), you may want to take advantage of this extension to complete an application for the scholarship, which can translate to an award of $4,000 over a four-year period of studies. Despite the good intentions around such novelty, we must attend to our underlying theological tradition of the sacrament, as well as support the stay-at-home order and its intended purpose – to keep people safe in their homes at this time.

• In keeping with longstanding pastoral practice when penitents’ access to the sacrament is restricted, they can be assured that their sins are forgiven if they make an act of contrition with a firm resolve to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation after the stay-at-home order is lifted.

• The faithful should be encouraged to pray particular prayers or meditate on passages of the Bible that you recommend to assist them in seeking the mercy and forgiveness of God and the grace of reconciliation. Our Lord knows your hearts, and He desires to reconcile your lives to Him. He awaits your presence in the Sacrament of Reconciliation once the stay-at-home order is lifted and our churches are re-opened. From Fr. Meany, Fr. Przemek, and Fr.
