Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” (John 15:1-8) God came down from heaven to live with us so that we could truly live and bear fruit. He joined our human family, becoming a squishy little baby, and shared our human nature, so that we could become children of God’s family and shine with the glory of the divine nature. Our destiny and our potential is extraordinary, supernatural. But for those who reject this super inheritance and fall short, their fall will be precipitous: they will be “thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned.” Jesus describes hell as the place of unrealized potential, pathetic fruitlessness. It is like the lifeless branch that receives no sap: “Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.” But the alternative to “you can do nothing” is potent, prodigious productivity: “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit.” We are the stewards of this part of the vineyard of the Lord which is Modesto. The Lord asks us to produce good works and gather with Him because “the harvest is rich but the laborers are few.” With Him we can do much. That is why we try to “remain in him”. At St. Joseph’s we spend hours with Him in our adoration chapel. We bring our children to the Communion rail. We study His word and we read about His saints. We connect ourselves to Him so that we can have effective priests, sisters and laypeople in the vineyard of the Lord!

HEALTH MINISTRY TIPS Leaves of three – Let them be.

To prevent poison ivy reactions, learn to identify these plants and

avoid contact with them. They have a compound leaf made up of three leaflets. They can grow

low to the ground, or as a shrub, or as a climbing vine. A unique feature of the leaflets is that the center leaflet has a stalk, but the two side leaflets do not, they are attached directly to the stem. The

side leaflets can have one smooth edge and one jagged edge that give them a sort of “mitten” shape. The vines also

have a fuzzy or hairy appearance. Every part of the plant is

poisonous and can cause a reaction.
