tribe. He tells this story thathis family tells him of the first

    time they crossed from Liberia

to the Cote Divoire: I almost

    died because my grandmother

was carrying me when we were

crossing the river, and the shots

    were flying and she almost

    dropped me.

He is trying to become a dentist.

His grandfather used to be a

doctor, and he is picking up the

    trade.

Majier Chol, is from Sudan. He

is the president of the African

    Student Organization, and a

    GRCC alum. He is considering

    coming back for Radiology.

He has been in the states seven

years. He arrived in Dec. 22,

2000, and before coming to the

States he lived in Kenya for 8

years as a refugee there. He says

that hopefully when he gets his

degree he can go back, since all

of his family is over there.

Deng says she misses Sudan a lot.You dont realize things are different until

you land in a different place, Deng said. She

grew up between Sudan and Uganda.

When she arrived at the States with her

brother and a cousin she began at 10th

grade, It was really hard because I didnt

have a formal education background before

I got here. She said she put school as

her top priority. She said she is going into

international relations, and has her eyes set

    on Michigan or Georgetown University

Peter Kuol, is from Sudan, and has been in states seven years.

Living in Sudan I really dont recall; I was little. I was born in 1984,

and the war broke out in 1983. He and his brother moved between

Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya for years escaping war. He moved with

his brother, cousin, and most of his family to the States but not with

    his mother and father.

He arrived to America with 3,000 other kids from Sudan. He lives

with a host family, who he says he loves, since they are his parents

    here.

Coming here was tough, especially the language, but Im a pretty

easy guy to get along with anybody, Kuol said.

I try to be positive, to be a good ambassador of my people, so I

can tell them (Americans) where we come from and tell them whowe are and what we want, Kuol is part of the Dinka tribe.

In the fall he is transferring to Western Michigan, and majoring in

    Alcohol can induce

difficulty walking andtalking, as well as

    blackouts and memory

    lapses.

    Long term brain damage

    can occur, resulting in

    slips in memory to

    permanent and debilitating

    conditions that require

lifetime custodial care. Long term alcohol use can

    cause blood pressure to

    rise, an increased heart

rate, abnormal heart beat, and potentially increase

    the size of the heart.

    Alcohol consumption

    can cause ulcers or

    stomach cancer if

    abused over a long

    period of time.

    One of the most

    serious side effects of

    drinking are cirrhosis

    and liver cancer.

    Alcohol abuse reduces

    proteins that keep fluid

    from the lungs, lowers

    antioxidants, and can cause

    what is known as alcoholic

    lung.

Three in every 10 Americans will be

involved in an alcohol related crash in

    their lifetime

    In 2007, 82.6% of 10th graders

reported alcohol was very easy to get

    or fairly easy to get
