Kids who are more “challenging” may not hear very often that someone is glad to see them, so make sure to intentionally connect with them. Say their name, tell them you’re glad to see them, and ask them about the best or worst part of their day!

Today, we’re talking about how our power to follow Jesus comes from God. Even Peter couldn’t do it by himself. No matter how many times we mess up, we can keep leaving our fears behind, and choosing God’s power.

Our power comes from Jesus.Luke 22: 54-62

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear.

TRAINS● Break kids up into teams of 6.● Each team is a “train”: they have to line up and put their hands on the shoulders of

the person in front of them. ● Each “train” has to travel around the room while you play music (with whichever

music source you have; CD player, itunes, speaker system, etc.) ● Pause the music every 1-2 minutes and yell out a “formation”. Kids have to make

that shape with their group as quickly as possible! For example:○ Make a circle while holding hands○ Lay on the ground and make a square○ Make a circle while facing outward○ Make a square○ Make a circle and hop○ Lay on the ground and make a triangle

● When you start the music again, kids have to get back into their “train” line, and keep traveling until you pause the music again.

Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Here’s today’s God’s Story video:

God’s Story / Peter Denies Jesus:https://youtu.be/0nHrpQc9G6k

● Welcome: Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. It’s great to see you here! Let’s talk about that Connect Time game; you did a great job traveling with your trains!

● Say: Do you think you could have made those shapes all by yourself? Could you make a circle or a triangle if it was just you? (Let kids respond.) No way!

● Say: It’s kind of like a real train. Do you think a train with just one car and no engine could get anywhere on its own? (Let kids respond.) Nope! It would need to get its power from somewhere. It needs an engine!

● Ask: What other things can you think of that need a power source, like electricity or batteries? (Let kids respond.) Great answers! Let’s watch a few videos to see some interesting ways that things get power. In this first video, try to figure out how the robot, Wall-e, gets his power!

● Video: Wall-E / Morning● Say: So how does Wall-E power up and get his energy?

(Let kids respond.) Yep, he gets his power from the sun! Let’s watch another clip and see a funny way of getting power to light up a stage…

● Video: Sing / Squid Power● Say: How did that stage get all it’s cool lights? (Let kids

respond.) That’s right, the squids gave it power to light up!

WELCOME

Main Goal: Welcome kids and review Connect Time.

JESUS IS OUR POWER SOURCE

PETER GOT HIS POWER FROM JESUS

● Say: Wall-e wouldn’t work if he didn’t have the sun to power him up, and that stage wouldn’t work if it didn’t have all those squids lighting it up. Today we’re going to talk about how WE need something to power us up to! We can’t do things all on our own!

● Ask: Now I have a very important question. And I want you to all shout out the answer to me, OK? Can we do things all by ourselves without any help from Jesus? (Let kids shout: “No!”) You’re right! We need Jesus’ power to be brave! There’s no way to do it all on our own!

● Ask: Jesus is the best source of power we could ever hope for. He’s God’s Son, and he has so much power, that he died and came back to life! Because of His power, he did miracles like making blind people see and paralyzed people walk.

● Say: The last few weeks, we’ve been talking about a guy named Peter. There were some times when he tried to be brave, but he didn’t get his bravery from Jesus. He tried to do it all on his own! Do you think that’s a good idea to do? (Let kids respond.) No way!

● Say: Let’s watch a video about what happened when Peter tried to do things his own way. As you watch, look for what Peter did after he made some big mistakes, and pay close attention to what gave him power.

● Video: God’s Story: Peter Denies Jesus● Ask: Can someone tell me what Peter did when people

asked him about Jesus? (Let a kid respond.) Yep, he said he didn’t know Jesus at all! Not just once, but three times!

● Say: Why do you think Peter did that? (Let kids respond.) Yep, maybe he was scared, or he didn’t trust that God would take care of him!

● Say: The most important part of the story, though, is what happened next. What did he do after he realized he made the wrong choice? (Let a kid respond.) He followed Jesus again!

● Say: You see, Peter and Jesus were friends, and Jesus KNEW that Peter would tell people he didn’t know Jesus. But even then, Jesus still loved Peter! And because of that, Peter was able to keep following Jesus, and even went on to be really brave!

Page 5: April 21-22, 2018 Peter denies Jesus Luke 22: 54-62 Our ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/... · brave, but he didn’t get his bravery from Jesus.

JOSHUA 1:9

RESPONSE TIME

● Say: If Jesus always gives us power to be brave, that means he is always with us. We don’t have to be afraid, because he’ll always be there to give us bravery. We’re going to read a verse that will help us understand this. Here it is:

● Slide: Joshua 1:9 This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

● Say: That means that no matter what hard thing you face, you can be strong and fearless. You can be brave because GOD is with you. He has ALL power, and he gives power to you.

● Say: Let’s all read it together again. But this time, I’m going to say a small part of it, and then you repeat after me, and do the motions! (Read the verse in sections, and show kids the motions)

○ This is my command (hold your hands like an open book)

○ Be strong and courageous (do a strong pose)○ Do not be afraid or discouraged (cross your arms

in front of you)○ For the Lord your God (point up)○ Is with you wherever you go (hug yourself)

● Say: Now that we know God is with us wherever we go, and that he gives us power to be brave, we need to know HOW to get God’s power.

● Ask: Do you all think there’s a cord we’re supposed to plug into a wall to get God’s power? (Let kids say: “No!”) How about a battery? Is there a battery we can use to get God’s power? (Let kids answer: “No!”)

● Say: We can get God’s power by being close to him. Can someone tell me a way that we can get close to God? (Let 1-2 kids respond.) You’re right! To be close to God and plug into his power, we can talk to him, read the Bible and ask him for help. All these things help us get his power!

● Say: Right now, if YOU want to get your power from God, and you want to follow him no matter what, then ask him right now! You can repeat these words after me (break the following up into chunks): God, I want you to give me power. Please help me when I can’t do things on my own.

Page 6: April 21-22, 2018 Peter denies Jesus Luke 22: 54-62 Our ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/... · brave, but he didn’t get his bravery from Jesus.

WORSHIP AND PRAYER ● Say: OK, let’s all stand up and celebrate God’s power! We’re going to sing some songs about how he makes us brave, and how we can always stop, listen to him and choose his power!

● Music Video: I Am Yours● Music Video: Everything Belongs to God● Pray: Ask somebody to come and thank God for giving us

power.

Page 7: April 21-22, 2018 Peter denies Jesus Luke 22: 54-62 Our ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/... · brave, but he didn’t get his bravery from Jesus.

Goal: Kids will (1) recognize our need for God’s help when following Jesus, (2) understand that Peter needed help and (3) identify one way they’d like to see God’s power this week.

Why? It’s important to understand that bravery isn’t achieved through our own power, but by God’s power in us.

Tip: Participate with kids in these activities! Let them see what trusting God and relying on his power looks like for you, even if it’s hard.

GET TO KNOW KIDS● Go around the group and have each kid say one thing about thing about themself that

might be true...or NOT true! Then let the group guess whether it’s true or a lie.

RESPOND TO THE STORY1. What did Peter do when people asked if he knew Jesus? Why did he do that?2. Was Peter able to keep following Jesus after that? How come?3. Can we follow Jesus without any help? Why do we need his power?4. What’s ONE way you could rely on God for power this week? (Share a personal

example first, to help get them thinking.)

STORY BAG● Give kids a paper bag and story card, and recreate the story with each item:

○ Image of Peter denying Jesus three times: Peter told others he didn’t know Jesus three times.

○ Rooster image: The rooster crowed in the morning, just like Jesus said.○ Cross: Peter made a wrong choice, but Jesus still loved him, and gave him the

power to keep following him!○ Joshua 1:9 verse card (The verse is on the back of the story card. Review it

with kids by doing the motions from Large Group, found on the next page!)

JOSHUA 1:9 VERSE MOTIONS● This is my command (hold your hands like an open book)● Be strong and courageous (do a strong pose)● Do not be afraid or discouraged (cross your arms in front of you)● For the Lord your God (point up)● Is with you wherever you go (hug yourself)

Still have extra time? Have kids do a coloring sheet.
